Hard brick is corrupted or missing bootloaders, can only happen when something goes wrong when youre flashing them. and the symptom would be a completely unresponsive phone. Doesn't do anything when you try and turn it on. Just sits there like a dog turd on the driveway.

Are you a victim of trying new things?

I have had a htc g1 t mobile in 100% working condition for a long period of time. a month ago i rooted the phone ( and i was successful), downgraded the phone to rc29 and tried to put the hero firm ware into my phone. in the process of trying to put the new firm ware i came across some difficulties and now, as what they say "bricked" my phone. immediately as this happened i was able to reach such screens as holding the end key and the camera key landing upon a white page with some options. not having much knowledge i played around with it and now my phone is completely unresponsive. all it will do is start up and stay on the g1 spalsh home screen and only when i take out the battery will it shut of. holding down any certain keys together does not seem to help. i have also given my phone to such companies as SN traders who were unsuccessful in repairing it as they said " they could not identify the problem". perhaps they never really tried. but the point is, i want my phone to work again. do you have any suggestions as to what i may do to bring my phone back to life or perhaps suggest a place to go to that will repair it for a fee. Please help . thanks in advance

Victim is definitely the wrong term to use in your case. This is exactly why the Devs put a disclaimer up reccomending you don't try this unless you are confident in what you are attempting to do.
At the end of the day, it's your hardware and your choice whether or not you choose to tinker with such things. As a side note, if you were able to get a screen with some options on it, you were probably able to reflash at that point but decided to "mess around" with it instead of coming here for solid info.
Sorry for your loss.

hey thanks for the criticism. if you dont know a way to help dont bother posting. and as for the title, its mainly just a tool for attracting people to this thread
wow... because this has to do with development.... LOCK and Block~~~
arbab01, perhaps you misunderstood.
this part of the forum is for development. There is a wonderful Q & A section that experienced g1 users such as myself tend to frequent (yes it is nice to help people out every once and a while).
Also, its part of the rules.

You're a moron. If you try to "attract" people to this thread with a misleading title, people will simply use their back button when they realize they've been duped. No one in their right mind is going to help you if you try to trick them into it. How stupid are you?
POST IN THE RIGHT SECTION, SERIOUSLY.
Mods: Ban the Noobs who cant use search or google.
To noob: buy a 20 dollar phone or go back to stock cause you are not tech savy enough to own/mess around with a g1. Also look for local colleges that teach a course on "googling"
now for the advice: you bricked your phone. its useless now. you are screwed. see above message.

Holy crap guys. How rude can you be. Just help the guy out or kindly press the back button. Maybe the topic will die on page 2 but you guys keep bumping it with your mighty "NOOB LOCK BAN" replies. Does it make you feel superior? I bet this guy never posts here again.
i'll guess you have held camera and pressed home to go into the bootloader again?
if you have try and put the DREAIMG.img file on another sdcard and try again. if not, go for the deductible, it's cheaper than a new phone right now

I actually used to do one or the other -- helping out or pressing back -- but it's getting ridiculous. If some guy is strolling along the grass with a "DO NOT WALK" sign in plain sight, is it really necessary to carry him off or ignore it? No. You yell at him so he gets the hell off himself and doesn't make that mistake again. And hopefully, spectators will see that such behavior will not be tolerated of them, either.
This is supposed to be a development section. Besides, XDA has too many users dragging it down as is. If this guy never posts here again, great, one less problem.
I cant believe this thread is still open..
and i hope he never posts again
If you can't boot in to the bootloader (camera + power) or the recovery menu (home + power) then it's dead. The only way to fix it is to replace the motherboard, but I doubt you'll be able to get a third party to do that for you. If you have a contract with tmo, go in to the store and act dumb, just say that that's what the phone does after you updated it. They should give you a replacement. If not, enjoy your paper weight.
Seriously guys, even if someone posts in the wrong section you might aswell help. But I'm sure it's much more satisfying to throw a hissy-fit >.>

thanks for ur sincere reponse. unfortuantly i got this phone from a local person here in ontario who i suppose brought it down from states. Would u know how to replace a mother board or any one who does and how much would it cost?
waaahhhhh...
FOLLOW FORUM RULES AND YOU WONT GET FLAMED. Its easy. All you do when you press the back button, or "just answer their question" is enable people to not do **** on their own and reinstate the fact they dont have to follow the rules. I'm sure we all haven't spent all of our time following the rules to watch someone else get away with completely disregarding them, right?
Besides, if this guy was REALLY trying to fix his phone it wouldnt have taken him a day to get back to anyone...and now its a "mother board" issue? He's wasting our time...
there's a post for a how-to for replacing a motherboard in this forum already....does this guy know where the search button is? He even includes how much you should expect to pay/best way to find one!
i feel bad when people brick their device, but you are a victim of yourself

Um...that depends. Do you want to?
If you're comfortable with flashing then I would, if not then probably no.

should you rom?
if you have to ask....
NO.
you should read.
then decide for yourself.
and know what you are doing before you are the 4th person in 24 hours to PERMANENTLY brick thier phone.
rom? no.... not yet at least...
read yes.

I absolutely agree with this answer. If you are thinking of flashing a ROM, what is the reason you are thinking about doing it? If you decide to go for it, then absolutely make sure you know completely what you are doing by reading as much as you can. Research first will save grief and frustration later. Let's just say I learned that the hard way. The only time I had any issues was when I didn't follow this advice.
Good luck with whichever way you decide to go.

Just take time to read and understand the while process before you start flashing. DO NOT try and figure out stuff as you go, as that is how stupid mistakes are made and you mess up your phone.
Check to make sure the 3 button combo for recovery and download modes are working, and just know and follow the steps laid out in the many tutorials you can find here on xda. If you can follow directions at all, your phone will soon be doing sweet ****, and you will probably become addicted to flashing and trying new things.
I am not all that knowledgeable about how stuff works, so I never try and modify stuff that hasn't been tried and tested by somebody else, and I've never run into any serious problems. I've flashed too many roms to remember, and never screwed up my phone beyond a simple fix, all thanks to a little careful reading.
Once you flash your first rom successfully, the process is simple and fun. Just make sure and read the thread for each rom you want to try carefully so that you know of all possible issues, and you shouldn't have any problems.

Make sure you know all the worst things that can happen. Not to scare you from doing it. On the contrary, once you know what's the worst, and you know how to fix it or prevent it, you're good to go.
Like everyone here says (because it's true) READ everything. Read the WHOLE OPs and multiple pages of everything. If someone had problem with something, they probably already mentioned it somewhere in the 23482 pages (it sucks, but you rather spend some time reading than have a dead phone).
At first everything will be uncertain (first time watching the bar go across the download mode screen when flashing from Odin) and sometimes you'll feel like you've bricked your phone. Just read the threads about ACTUAL bricked phones to know what NOT to do.
Actually, what I suggest is to find a rom that you like, but more importantly has REALLY thorough documentation about how to install. Once you do it a couple of times it'll be smooth sailing from there, and you'll be able to work with any kind of rom easily (terminology and stuff becomes more familiar too).

So you ask the same question in a different format. Tell us that you at least read some of the replies above. Right?
Talk to people that have rommed (if that's a word. If not, then Copyright bdgiese90 2011). If they know your phone well and can help if you have questions beyond what is answered in OP's, then you can make a choice from that too. But seriously. Do your reading first. Installing a ROM isn't something other people decide for you.
And one more thing. Don't ask the same question again with different wording. Read what all of these intelligent people are posting to you. Believe it or not, they ARE helpful

You sound ambivalent and unsure. Bad combination. Step away from the phone before you hurt it.

Questions about Root and custom Rom

Hello, my Nexus One's warranty is just ended. I want to try rooting and use customs rom as my friend said it's good. I've been searching around the thread but still not found a nice easy rooting/customs rom procedure. I am not good in programing and afraid this will crack my N1. Please anyone help me with it and so I can do it on my own. thank you very much.
Please read my signature.
first of all don't be afraid of bricking your phone unless you touch it's radio (maybe there's another way to brick it but I'm not aware of that) Just letting you know now it would've been nice for me to know when i started playing with my phone back then with an htc magic i was so scared i was gonna brick it.

[Q] Galaxy tab screen black, won't turn on, Odin does not recognise, please help

I was upgrading my galaxy tab, it was stucked at the middle of the process, then i unplugged it, then just a black screen, then i tried many method such as hold power+volume down or power+touching screen... but nothing happened.
please help me as i've been searching this forum before posting this thread but no solution for my lack of experience in this matter. thanks guys.
If it won't turn on, and the tab doesn't respond to being plugged into the wall, it's very likely hard bricked. You likely borked your bootloader... Given the lack of information you provided, this is just a best guess.
You can send it to samsung you get repaired, or connexion from mobiletechvideos can jtag it for you.

I think i did break it. Is there other way i can fix it without sending to Samsung? Thank you for your reply.
As btyork said - "connexion from mobiletechvideos can jtag it for you".
If you aren't in the same country as btyork you may find other places to jtag for you where you are, ask around, but there's no way you can do anything yourself.....
Hard brick means that - sit there doing nothing....
guys i think its too early to determine that his tab is hard bricked or no ..
this Q had answers already .. i recommend you to search on the forum . before u post this thread .. use the search option u'll get your solution FAST

First off, if it wont even turn on or recognize charging, its bricked.
Second, dont be a hypocrit and tell someone to search first when this morning you bashed on Athiest for doing the EXACT same thing you just did...

As stated if the TAB will not respond to button combos or charging, it's hard bricked and will require JTAG. I can do this for anyone who needs it. Just send me a PM. Warranties don't last forever and people will need a trusted resource for JTAG which is what I've been doing for 100's of others.

[Q] Running cat screen

ok so I ****ed up trying to load an ics rom. long story short, I can't get into recovery or download mode, and i can't connect it to my computer anymore.
when i boot it up, it brings up this damn running cat graphic, and I can't go anywhere from there. I have tried all combinations to get into download/recovery modes, and tried every obvious fix. is a jig my only option here?
ICS is NOT for noobs. congratulations on learning that.... you should have read that first....
try reading the ICS Q&A threads. use the "search" , "search this fourm" and "search this thread" features of XDA.

Even if it isn't you only option get a damn jig. Its so useful and we won't see these damn threads. As TRusselo said ICS ports are not for newbs. They are still in early dev and still need more time to be "friendly".
