I will test one click out thanks I was using an old version of odin because some goof said that oneclick does not work on gingerbread and that odin would work :/ I used it the last time I rooted on froyo.

-_- now IDK what happened I properly disconnected my phone and now it shoes a cell phone Icon.../!\...PCIcon on a black screen.
I feel like the more I mess with it the more I screw it up, now it wont leave that screen (I was in Download mode)

that is the soft brick screen. and its properly written " Phone /!\ PC " (you can underline the /!\ if you want to be fancy)
use it as download mode. if odin doesnt see it, reboot the phone again, reboot your PC, then try again.

Ok my phone now doesn't even boot...
Please help, I don't know what to do and I need my phone :/ I backed up everything except root files.
OK phone booted to Downloading screen.
Well when anyone gets back online can I be directed to somewhere where I can get directions on how to return my phone to stock SGS captivate i897 thank you all for your help.

I'd start here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843
where you can find a ton of one-clicks to get back to stock.
If you look at post 3 here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18370912&postcount=3
you can find the Odin and Heimdall one-clicks to get to stock 2.3.5 KK4.
After that try this thread to obtain root:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1444382
That's what I did last time and it worked well. I went on to try the Corn Kernel and liked that as well. In the end I came back to CM7, though. It just gives my phone life that stock can't accomplish.
Good luck!
As with anything, be sure to read read read. This is what worked for me and you never know when that could be a fluke.

Wonderful, I am attempting that now my phone is in download mode just waiting to finish downloading i897uckk4 contains bootloaders
OK not sure if bootloaders was necessary but it worked like a charm, my mistake before was using a crappy version of Odin and for the wrong reason.
I stayed up reading all night last night till 4am on this site trying to figure it out but I had Odin all along just didnt know how to run it
Now I would like to flash to something else and would definitely appreciate it if you wouldn't you mind sending me some links in a PM to a thread with directions on how to get CM7? if not its ok you've done a hell of a-lot for me already thanks so much.
Thanks to Nick D for leading me to the right place and TRusello for helping me get my phone back to DL mode.

Tried rooting with super one click, TRusselo suggested and the program stopped responding, My phone is still plugged in and I'm not sure if I want to unplug or what.
any suggestions?

Super One Click has not worked to root 2.3. Always gets stuck at step 7, just like you show there. As far as I know you just abandon it. Nothing has been done to your phone.
To get root you will have to odin a kernel that either has root or you can use to root.
I used Mtcarey's Corn kernel. V7.06. It has CWM as well. In the recovery menu that comes with the kernel is an option to root your phone. I used Vz 1.85 of Odin and had not problems. It was very easy.
0. Download the latest Corn kernel vz 7.06 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1294477. Note, earlier versions will work as well.
1. Start Odin on your PC.
2. Put your phone into download by holding the volume up and volume down buttons. The little android guy with a shovel shows up.
3. Plug in your phone. Odin will show that it has detected the phone. The reboot option should be already checked.
4. Put the zip file you downloaded to your pc in the PDA slot by pushing the PDA button and then searching and selecting the file.
5. Flash. When it is done your phone will reboot.
6. Have an adult beverage.
There have been reports of that kernel having issues with EXT4 however so I left all of that and other speed tweaks alone.

Is that it!? Slaps self in forehead, I was so confused reading off of other peoples directions that I thought it would be too complicated for me... wow your directions were perfect! I will have two Blue Moons one for myself and one for you but since you are not near... I will drink it for you LOL! Thank you so much!!!
After following all the steps and succeeding the apps like super user and titanium backup still say that my phone is not rooted.
OK I feel like a dumb ass but IDK how to get to "In the recovery menu that comes with the kernel is an option to root your phone"
OK got into recovery mode but I see no option to root phone....
so I kept searching within the menus in recovery and found it Thanks again.

I happened to see this reply at the same time I was surfing Cyanogen's site, so it's your lucky day for links:
Here is the stable version of CM7 for Captivate:
http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?type=stable&device=captivatemtd
Here's the instructions for how:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Captivate:_Full_Update_Guide
The guide says you have to be on Android 2.2 bootloaders to jump to CM7. Numerous users have stated that's not the case, it's just Cyanogen covering their ass. I don't blame them, but you can read on the matter and make your own decision. I don't think I've yet read of someone jumping from 2.3.x to CM7 and having issues over bootloaders.
Edit: Just saw that you already flashed Corn and got CWM. You're well on the way now.

[Q] I think I just bricked my phone?

Beat with me guys, I am very very new to this board, and I apologize if I post this in the wrong area.
Lemme start from scratch.
My phone is not rooted or anything like that. BUT I wanted to update my software for the Captivate to 2.2 using samsung Kies.
Not sure what happened, I though I had the correct drivers installed and what not, but it gave me the screen with the phone, exlamation mark, and computer.
I can put my phone into download mode, and I installed odin3 one click downloader. The problem is, when it gets to the part 'file analysis' it gets stuck there.
I watched a video on youtube and his went automatically, so I'm not sure at ALL what to do. If I can fix this myself, I'd love to. If not, I will go through AT&T and see if I can get it replaced.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Not sure how to fix it, but if you have to send it into samsung say it got screwed up somehow while trying to update to KB1, in truth that is what happened, plus if you say that they will try to fix it fast
If you have access to another computer, download ODIN and try it on that one. Odin works on my laptop but not on my desktop.
CM7 Inspire 4G
What you have is a soft brick. Keep trying to get into download (try both 2 and 3 button methods) and then retry Odin. Look in Dev subforum for the "How to flash a ROM" sticky as there is good info on how to do this.
Samsung was absolutely no help lol.
Well.. I guess I can try this on another desktop.
Jeez I regret trying to upgrade man. Shoulda waited and learned more.
Has anyone had odin3 get stuck at file analysis before?
What model is your Cappy? You can find the model number underneath the battery (on the phone itself). It should have a number like 1006,1007,1008,1009,1010,etc.
Also, it'll be a good idea to try this alternate method in the mean time:
Make sure you know how to go to Download Mode, and that you have the drivers installed properly.
Windows 64bit
Windows 32bit
This is the manual (or "full") Odin, it's taken from a post by icezar1 in the Development Forum:
Do not use this if you want to send your phone back to ATT or Samsung for warranty!
Do not use this if you know you flashed a -LOW- ODIN package (when opening the PDA***.tar or CODE***.tar you will find inside boot.bin or sbl.bin)
Use this if you want to go back to stock before flashing a custom ROM.
Use this without worries if you changed your boot screen image or if you flashed the secondary boot loader which allows you to enter download/recovery with key combos.
Download the package from here
How to:
Remove sdcard and SIM card from the phone
Extract JF6_secure.zip somewhere.
Boot your phone in Download Mode
Run Odin3 v1.3.exe
Plug in your phone via USB
Click on the button PDA
Choose JF6_secure.tar.md5
Click start
Wait and do not unplug cable until it is finished

Just for clarity sake, those are not the model numbers, they are build date (first two are year, second two are month). The model number of the Captivate is i896 or i897.
I know, I keep saying that they're model number though for some reason. Thanks anyway I guess.
Thank you venomio this 1.3 is working much better.

I'm in the same exact situation as the OP. I'll try the instructions posted below and report my findings.
check your build number first before you flash using odin. certain build may not work with odin one-click.
an usb jig will help you out if you cannot get into the download mode or just in case:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...84198&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT#ht_782wt_1139

Huge problem. Bricked phone???

New member and somewhat stupid for trying to do this:
Long story short I attempted to throw gingerbread 2.3.X on the phone and now its stuck in either download mode, recovery mode, or if i just turn it on it comes up and says "GALAXY S GT-I9000 Samsung" The last thing that was successful was putting the SpeedMod Kernel on it.
In recovery mode it says "ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.1.0 SpeedMod ULFK" on top and bottom.
The phone started out with factory settings.
When i try and use the ODIN 3 and try to do the Mast Clear it says :
<ID:0/005> Added!!
<ID:0/005> Odin v.3 engine (ID:5)..
<ID:0/005> Master Clear Started.....
and then stays like that indefinately...
Same thing with hitting "start"
Please let me know how to fix this, I know there are some really brilliant individuals on this forum and it would be greatly appreciated.
search for odin, download it, follow the steps and flash back to stock. you'll be fine especially since you can get into download mode.
edit: gah you already have odin. do you have one click or the one where u have to put the pit and tar files?
the same advice applies though, find the stock files, and go into download mode, then plug it in and flash back to stock.
i think master clear only works when the phone is on and you have usb debugging enabled.
Ive got ODIN 1.7 and ODIN3. I can get them to both recognize the phone but when I try and hit "start" with v1.7 it ust sits there forever. and Im not able to get ODIN3 to do anything either.
Any way you could provide a more step by step solution?
If you're having problems with ODIN, something that seemed to work for me was to remove my SIM card.
Try removing it and see if you have any luck.
I dont have anything in the phone, no sim and no external.
Just left it alone for a bit and came back and turned the comp back on and everything worked for ODIN. Thanks for the help fellas

I tried to get back to the stock rom... and yes, i did an factory reset and cache wipe etc before..
Anyone who can help me?
NP, this thing happened to me... Is it because you clicked on re-partition...?
I cant guarantee, but i unplugged it, and it was soft bricked, i then flashed it without repartition checked.
Hopefully works for you
GL
you can indeed uplug it in this situation. Pull the battery and let it sit, go back into download mode and reflash the stock firmware.
If you check re-partition, make sure you have a pit 512 file that you are flashing. If you do not have a pit file, then make sure re-partition is unchecked.
Thanks both.
I did not check re-partition. I am not experienced with all this and i'm fairly new.
I just tried to flash the stock rom, because I couldn't boot up properly.
Ok. I'm trying to flash it again. It's actually doing more then it did before. I'll let you know
EDIT
OK.
I tried again but it was stuck again. Now at like 95% of the completion -.-
I tried for the third time. It keeps failing ....
anyone who can help me with this?
btw, i just noticed i posted this in the Galaxy S forum accidently. I have a SGSII instead. But I think it doesn't make any difference?

Lol fourth time...
SGSII your using the correct firmware then right? The link i gave shouldn't apply to you it could brick your phone...
Yh, Odin can be annoying sometimes, you can either wait a while and try again later, restart and try again, or use heimdall. Or you could flash a zip through recovery (not sure if that last one works if you cant get past boot)

Umm no I used the right SGSII firmware. You didn't even gave me a link.
I'm sure I used the right firmware.
the first time I tried (when I posted), it got stuck before it even really started. second time and third time at 90-100%. the last time it worked.
I have no clue why it wasn't working, but this was the only solution for me (no, I couldn't boot, so I couldn't put anything on my SD and use CWM).
odin hangs often for the simplest of reasons, especially a loose usb connection -- test this by plugging into you pc or laptop and see if it stays linked or unlinks after a short duration or if the cable is jiggled -- you then know to hold the cable when using odin, or better still, get a replacement usb cable

Help with brick please

Hey all,
As per title, A while back I rooted and installed a few custom roms on my unit before sticking with one named
"GT-7000_SweetROM_V11.1_LTA" and all was going well until a "super user" app update and a "low battery" met in the middle and my phone lost power and turned off.
Now my phone will not boot and freezes on the samsung logo, pressing vol up + power + home will, not bring up the recovery mode
but vol down + power + home will take me to a download screen, Odin, if my research is right.
I've read a few posts with the same symptoms as me but with different reasons for getting there in the first place and I'm unsure of what to do.
If my reading has been correct I'm not hard bricked but am in a bit of a spot and PC Odin can help me out, but then there are different versions of Odin as well.
Just some more bits and peices that I can think of to try and give you all as much info as possible. here goes,
I do remember Philz ???? something on my phone and was able to switch between roms by placing them on the external micro sd card and using vol up + power + home to navigate a menu.
Whilst writing this post I have had my unit plugged in via usb and it justs sits there with the battery icon showing but it shows no movement ie: the little cirle will not spin nor will the green charge level go up. Also it tried to install "mobi" something onto my pc.
Another problem I'm having is finding a valid download link for PC Odin any help there would be cool.
If you need anymore info I'll do my best but I'm very new to this, many thanks
E2A: have downloaded Odin and phone is reconized there just need to learn how to use the Prog
Download and flash PhilZ kernel 15.5 odin version. Flask on via odin (put it in pda tab and flash) and see if you can get your phone working again or can get into recovery. If not download and.flash whole stock jb rom. There is also a ltc rom odin version recently posted in one of the two dev threads.
As how to use odin for note, find the famous sticky thread by dr.ketan in our n7000 forum.

Yeah low battery which doesnt seem to be charging acording to the widget but I can enter download mode whilst plugged in to usb but not recovery
just for info my phone acts the same wether plugged into comp or the wall socket with samsung hardware
guess Im screwed eh?
thanks
I would try a new battery.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2
I'm sure the battery is fine it's the phone thats mucked up, I've not had any problems to idicate my battery was failing
Are there any other avenues I could explore? I'm willing to get a new battery but then I could have 1 phone and 2 dead batteries and no way of charging.
When I tried flashing PhilZ kernel and the jb rom with Odin it was Odin that did its thing then reported to have failed, the phone had power to it the whole time and was showing the download screen with the message "do not turn off target".
thanks for you help so far

Changed cable, used the wife's S3 cable
Ports, I can open ports easy, thought that was just router tho
PC, not sure what you mean there but running Win7 with decent spec.
Still the same outcome, fails on connection

<OSM> Please wait..
<OSM> PhilZ-cwm6-DDLSC-ODD-5.11.2.tar.md5 is valid.

seems to be hanging on a connection
1. Install the latest drivers from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=961956/
2. Reboot
3. Disable all antiviruses
4. On your phone:
a) Boot into download mode
b) Plug your phone into your PC (only plug it into the USB 2.0 ports, don't do it on 3.0 or 1.1 or 1.0 etc.)
c) Follow the on screen instructions saying something along the lines of "Press volume up to continue" - you want to continue
d) Check whether Odin has detected your phone, if it has continue to step 5
5. Flash a stock ROM or kernel
6. If it succeeds, boot into recovery and perform a factory reset <= ONLY IF IT ISN"T ICS
OK.. Odin is not able to get to the PIT mappings.. There seems to be some connection issues. Check with newer version of Odin.. Also probably a different pc.

I got that mobogenie rubbish by accident once too, it came with daemon tools.
Can you perhaps try those steps on another computer?

I do have an old lappy but it has Ubuntu installed and that drives me nuts lol, only other option is to put Odin plus Rom onto memory stick and visit a friend..
You said something about PIT and Ive seen some posts on it, I guess that roue is last resort?
really appreciate you help here
If there is a proper connection, then odin should be able to get the partition mapping from the phone and will be displayed as
<ID:0/004> SetupConnection..
<ID:0/004> Initialzation..
<ID:0/004> Get PIT for mapping..

and if I cant get a proper connection (I can't, Odin never gets past SetupConnection) Im doomed?
That's why try on a different pc.

There is no revert back to 4.4.2. What you've linked to is jelly bean. And there is no going back there. What is your issue exactly?

Have you tried either pulling the battery or holding the power button for about 15 seconds to boot back into system? ? Or is there no system to go back to? Which there should be with stock recovery.

Battery pull shuts off phone then I put it back in and it just goes to download mode. if I hold the power button for 15 seconds it just boots back into download mode. It is stock recovery.

Uh oh. This is beyond my comprehension. I don't know how this happened with a stock recovery. Hold tight and someone else should be able to help better than I can. What were you trying to do when this happened?

All I can think to do is boot into recovery and hit reboot system. Then let it sit. It usually takes mine about 5 mins from there. We can't use odin and without safe strap there is no flashing a replacement rom.
If you can get to att boot screen give it as long as you can to boot

That's crazy. From a dead phone if you hold volume up home key and power button in that order you can't get to recovery? I don't mean to state the obvious but I don't know how familiar you are. I've had 8 note 3s and I've never been in a spot where I can't get to recovery.

Im sorry. I thought I'd take a crack at it. I don't know where to lead you from there. I wish you the best. I've bricked a few phones myself.
I hope you get it resolved. SOMEONE here will be able to help you.

I sent you a PM if you could look at it, it may help.
I'm in the exact same situation and have been trying everything that's been posted but still no success. I'm going to hangout here and see if we can find something that can be done or point us in the right direction. Just letting you know you're not alone on this bud
Hey guys. Check out my post here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=65467618&postcount=6, read through everything and start at step #4 where you flash the NC2 stock image in the odin AP slot, this should get your phone working again. After that feel free to continue to follow the steps to root, etc. Let me know if this doesn't work and I'll do my best to continue to help.
As long as you can get into download mode, your phone is fine. I've went out of my way testing these to try and permanently brick this phone. I even got it to stop being detected by a computer while in download mode and was still able to recover.
Best of luck
I have a question and I hope someone is still reading through these threads. I have a Galaxy Note 3 AT&T SM-N900A. When I bought it a couple weeks ago, (I already own another one but a T-Mobile variant, to which I've had no issues) I wanted to root it. So I did. Then I removed some system apps. Then I realized I wanted to update it since it was only 4.3! Well OTA was out of the question and so was KIES as I rooted. SO I thought it'd be best to unroot and flash stock firmware and continue to update via OTA. That has not happened. Every time I try to flash stock firmware, regardless of the version of Odin, regardless of where I downloaded the firmware, I always get a fail!!! NOTHING WORKS!!! I even unistalled KIES, reinstalled drivers, tried different USB chords, including the one that came with the phone!!!! I just want to get it back to it's original state so that I can update it via OTA or KIES. I'll paste the ODIN message and a thumbnail that has a screenshot of my phone in download mode when ODIN fails. If ANYONE can help in ANY WAY, I'll donate!!!!! I'll do almost anything!! This is driving me crazy and I'm not one who likes to admit defeat and bring it to Best Buy, especially since Best Buy is over an hour away from here!!! There has to be a way I CAN do this! Here is the ODIN fail message:

Odin may be failing because the bootloader on the phone may be newer that the bootloader you are flashing.
This might help: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2703006

So I need to root it again first, then update it to Lollipop using this guide, correct?
Rooting has nothing to do with installing recovery, boot loader, or ROM.
You are using the wrong file for your phone.
