My S7 is stock HC 514, just installed CWM 3.2-4.0.1.4 and Superuser7. I did a Nandroid backup to my external sdcard. There were two errors reported at the completion concerning the external sdcard as if it tried to back it up. This might make sense as, how could it backup its content while writting to it at the same time? The backup was created on the external sdcard.
I was considering NVflashing to R2 and then CWM/R to R7. Has anyone tried to restore a Nandroid backup to go back to the original state? Will/should that work?
I have read posts mentioning "nvflash backup" but searching has found nothing on how to create a backup using nvflash.

I'm using the latest Amon_RA recovery. I wanted to flash a rom, so I did a BART backup. I wasn't satisfied with the ROM though, so I decided to restore the backup, but I'm gettin this error all the time

I've seen that "run ... from the console" error message trying to do a Nandroid backup on Amon_RA before and the cause was that there wasn't enough free space on my SD card. Once I cleared some room it worked fine.
Might be the same thing in your case. Try moving some some stuff off the SD card and retry the BART restore.
Quick question... I897 with KB1 + voodoo lagfix kernel. Just did my first nandroid backup and it completed... however, it flashed some errors about accessing apps on external sdcard. This was from CWM RED (v2.5.1.3). I do have some of my larger apps stored on external SD (and all work just as fast as if they were on internal sd). Was I supposed to move these back to internal SD before doing nandroid? Does a nandroid backup just backup the internal sd? Thx gang.
Typically nandroid through CWM creates the image from shall we say the local or main portion of you devices memory.
Suggestion - If you are space deprived on the internal SD, copy the APKs to you desktop (for the image backup) and delete them from your device for now. They can always be copied back to your int SD or ext Sd. This won't remove, delete or uninstall the application itself, but rather enhance space.
Another suggestion is to create an initial backup prior to the CWM nandroid backup with Titanium Backup first, then copy and store that backup, with all your apps) safely on a PC.

I just flashed a new rom -Stocklite 7.1
This is my first attempt at flashing a ROM so bare with me.
I created a Nandroid backup prior to flashing and I also copied the entire contents of the SD card over to my computer.
I am using Link2SD and an ext partion as well.
Flashed succesfully. However none of my previous apps / data show up, this was slightly unexpected. I attempted to peform a nandroid data only backup to get these by going to recovery mode then advanced data only restore.
But i got an md5 mismatch.
Basically.
I am trying to restore my apps / data and I want to keep the stocklite 7.1 ROM. NOT a full restore.
Any help?
I recommend using titanium backup for backing up your apps. But, you can probably get user apps by coppying/flashing them to where they belong.
Options:
1 go back to stock rom by restoring your stock backup, make a backup using titanium backup, flash stock lite, install titanium backup, restore your apps. To succesfully restore your stock nandroid backup use te ext4 manager app, convert system to rfs, go to recovery, restore.
2 - open your stock backup on your computer with unpacking or iso software (like 7 zip), extract your user apps (apk files), create a flashable zip to flash them to data/app, system/app as needed. You can also flash their libs and data files to data/data and dalvik-cache to data/dalvik-cache. That should restore user apps and their data to internal memory if you don't want to use titanium backup.
You lost all your data..you should have a taken app backups with Titanium Backup,Nandroid isn't enough.
MD5 mismatch is showing up because you changed the name of the backup folder ..
You can open the backup manually, and get all the data.It might or not work,that would depend oon your luck

Can anyone tell me what, if anything, I should do about this error which appears after restoring a Nandroid backup? The phone seems to be working ok so far. I've done Nandroid backup and restore several times without errors before but obviously something has changed.
Error while restoring /sdcard/.android_secure!
/tmp/recovery.log was copied to /sdcard/clockworkmod/recovery.log. Please open ROM Manager to report the issue.
I cannot see any file called "recovery log" in the /sdcard/clockworkmod folder. There is a file called "recovery-update.zip".
I tried uninstalling/re-installing ROM Manager and then making and restoring a new nandroid backup but the result was the same. The backups are to the internal sd card.
I'd be grateful for any advice. I tried trawling around the forums for some hours as this seems to be a widely discussed issue but cannot find any clear explaination of the cause or fix.

Yes, there is a Clockworkmod folder on my ext/sd card. I wanted to do Nandroid backups there but the option to Use External Storage is greyed out on the settings page.
Right now, the only Nandroid backup I have in on the int/sd card

which settings page ?
in CWM you need to go to backup & restore and choose backup (this will backup to external SD).. there is another option to select backup to internal SD
I'm using ROM Manager (Premium) and under the settings there's an option to use external sd card but it's greyed out.

Use CWM directly to make backups to your desired storage
Can you tell me where to get CWM? I can only see ROM Manager on the Google Play site. I understand that RM is really just a front end for CWM but I'd have assumed the functinality would be the same.

if you are having hydracore the cwm will be already there. It's a recovery. you need to boot into recovery mode.

Does a nandroid backup touch the sd card somehow? I mean if I had done some backups for apps using some Rom (titanium root app ofc) and then restored another Rom where my backups were old :s
Will my new backups gebt overwritten by my old backups when I restore to an old Rom ?

I dont really understand the question but Ill try to answer to the best of my ability.
Nandroid backups are stored on the SD Card. So are Titanium Backup folders. Also nandroids backup EXACTLY how the phone was when you made the nandroid. The custom recoveries also don't touch whatever is on the SD card unless ure flashing something or backing up.
so I think ure question is will the Titanium Backups get overwritten when you restore a nandroid. The Answer is No because like I said earlier, the recovery will only be restoring the nandroid, not erasing anything else.

A nandroid backup takes a full image backup of the different partitions such as /system, /data /boot etc.
Titanium Backup makes file level backups.
If you load a new ROM and install new programs and then do a Titanium backup you will get all of your current programs.
If you then decide to restore a nandroid backup of an old ROM, the /data partition will be completely replaced and only contains programs that were installed at the time the nandroid backup was made.
However, all of the backup files you made with Titanium Backup are still on the SD card, so you can simply reinstall Titanium and then restore all of the programs from your Titanium Backup.
Nandroid backups and Titanium backups are created in different directorires on the sd card and will not get overwritten when creating backups.
