How do I become a wildlife photographer ? - Off-topic

What are possible employment opportunities for wildlife photographer in India?
Hello,
One of my friends is a pretty good photographer, he took some pretty awesome photos when he was in Kanha national park. he wants to be a wildlife photographer. so can you help?
Also can you tell rough salary which a wildlife photographer gets.
Best regards
Ritchie Michael

Getting into wildlife is difficult. You can do it for fun at first, then sell photos to smaller magazines, and maybe after a long while National Geographic might see his work, MIGHT like it, and MIGHT ask to hire him...in 30 years.
Some photography jobs are really difficult to get a well paying job in. Also, how awesome were the photos?

professional wildfire photography? Salary? in order to get these two together you must be VERY good and VERY VERY lucky .. specially if you are heading for National Geographic...
generally pro photography is difficult... little job opportunities except than weddings etc..

How can I be a photographer for National Geographic?
We are often asked by aspiring photojournalists for advice about entering this highly competitive field.
National Geographic photographers have college degrees in a variety of disciplines. Most did not major in photography, but all took photo courses. The most common majors have been journalism, anthropology, sociology or psychology, fine arts, and sciences. Our editors and photographers agree that it is important to complete a degree in a discipline other than photography. Freelancers usually come to us with at least five years of photojournalism experience or with specializations such as wildlife, underwater, nature, or aerial photography. We seek balance and an eclectic blend of interests, abilities, and photographic styles in the freelancers we hire.

One does not simply become a wildlife photographer by starting two exact threads on XDA.

I'm assuming your "friend" you made the other thread for got a amazing job as a wildlife photographer and you want to follow not his footsteps... Why don't you just ask "him"?

Writing articles and taking the pictures for them. Need some heavy hitting diplomas and some teaching jobs, but... Still probably easier than doing it the portfolio route

Simple answer you don't ;P
if you want to be a photographer, i would suggest you to spent around a 1000 euro, on a beginner camera, you can take some really good photos with them.
But if you want to be a professional, you need to invest at least 2000-3000 euro on a camera, and a full photoshop

And this is where you're wrong. You don't need to buy 1000s worth of gear to be a pro. You just need to learn to use your gear and sell your images. I hate how society doesn't know what the definition of professional is. You only buy gear to make your life easier.

If you want to be a pro, you have just to be very good at capturing photos and also be a good seller. The equipment you will not make you a pro.
And if you think I'm wrong take a look at Magnum. There are guys there that shot great photos with a really cheap equipment

My advice: take a camera. Any camera that you like , it doesn't need to be expensive. Now go out and start shooting, stick it on Auto and just frame and press the button.. If you like what you see , go take some theory lessons -just the basics on how to properly function the camera in various lightning conditions. Usually photography/ culture clubs offer that in a small price, or learn through internet and books. Then go out and shoot some more. If you really like what you see, go ahead... And never stop shooting

I'm not sure you understand what you posted before.Basically what you said: To be a photographer, spend $1000, to be a professional, spend a lot more thousands of dollars. And I can care less if you studied photography. I never took a photography class, yet I am able to sell my photos. I know gear makes a difference in photos, but you don't need expensive gear to take a great shot.

Sure, but you can't advise someone to go and spend some thousands $$ to become a pro. He will first have to get something basic and if he ever feels the need to upgrade, let him do it.

already interesting. Although 18 replies for now, already you see that this XDA product is used by young people and not the 'Managers of the world'..
I think this poll is more likely to show that younger thinkers will be attracted to a forum such as this, more than the profile of actual users. I guess I am a manager in this world, though I'm also a hands-on person too. I'm in the technology business because I love technology, and I love making my life easier and more interesting through the application of technology. The XDA is one of those things that has delivered business value for me AND is a fun thing to have. I look for excuses to mess with it and experiment, which is why I am here.

I've heard. In my part of the US, we get what we call "snowbirds" for the cooler months. They are old people who should not be driving any more who come down for our warm desert climate. They drive huge vehicles with no competence and no eyesight. Fun on a bike.
im only just 17 i picked up my xda for a bargain on ebay £190 exellent cond was dropped and one corner has a dent in (near the ir lens) but it works fine come with everything not even used  i wanted a 7650 but i seen this for £190 so i got it ive had it for about 4 months now still going nice and good. I like it because it is like a pc and the games are brill and also i wanted mp3 lol
36 so I must be mature....
but also on two wheels. Some say it's immature but I didn't have the money for a bike when I was younger and I will never lose interest in technology and gadgets.
I have one example that this will stay that way. My mother in law (haha you say LOL). She is much older but is very interested in PC's and technology and recently started with some serious digital photography.
hmmmm, two paragraphs already and I still haven't convinced myself that getting older is no problem
I'm 18. I'm in the US and bought the XDA as a reward for myself after working full time all summer as a computer programmer for the local telco (BellSouth).

Yes you young wipper snappers are all that!!!!!

use your x1 as a spy cam

i have been thinking that a programm turning your x1 into some sort of spy cam would be a coll idea. if you dont know what i mean by that:
it should for example be able to
-take photos at a user defined time interval
-set the camera resolution
-hide the camera screen on the display
-save the pics to a specified folder
-maybe start taking pics at a certain time
-etc
this would also make it possible to easily take a series of shots over the day or even week to see a plant growing or what so ever...
unfortunately i didt have the time to really get into wm programming but i also didnt want withhold my ideas from you all and maybe somebody interested could even try this out.
so let me know what you think, plz.

Poetry,
Or you know, take pictures of activities in which another person might not have consented to having their pictures taken .
I just personally feel that this program is seriously asking for legal troubles. And you'd be surprised as to how many sick, perverse people there are out there who will easily abuse this "program".
If you "really" want this program TC, make it yourself and use it yourself. Simple as that.

Yup, every thing he describes is more for taking naughty pictures than for plants. BTW, what's so embarrassing for being honest?
Key words:
1) Spy Cam
2) Hide the camera screen on the display
3) Maybe start taking pics at a certain time
Besides plants growing very very very very slow, taking one picture in 1 spot everyday is easy.
All you need is to keep your camera on a tripod and never change the angle or direction and take the daily pictures for 31 days or more.
Besides, if you want true high quality video with millions of frames you will need a professional camera that can record videos 24/7 and you would need to keep it plugged in 24/7.
This guy is either dumb or asking for a true spy scam software. Naughty boy.

yeouda,
And how exactly is this useful? This is not a real-time feed. I doubt it'd be useful if your baby has been murdered and then you watch the video of it happening (you'd obviously want to prevent it). Same goes for your house. Moreover, if your phone is sitting there recording stuff, how exactly are you going to communicate anyone? Purchase another phone? That sort of defeats the purpose of even buying a pocketpc to even begin with doesn't it?
Think people, think.
Cheers.

I hope someone walks up to you next time and asks you how is the best way to murder someone and then you'd be "respectful" enough to tell them. And when they do murder someone based on your methods, I'd like to see what you'd think.
Gosh, people nowadays, seriously.
There are times to be respectful and be a good helping Samaritan, but this is not the time. Don't be stupid and enable potential voyeurism among the many perverts out there. Please, have some common sense and have respect for the many individuals who could be potentially violated as a result of this ridiculous application.

Hey XDA.

I recently decided to a lot myself $500 to spend on myself before I resume my major saving scheme. (I save 80% of every check, right into savings account, investments, etc). But I have to let myself spend some money every now and again!
Anyways, I want to buy myself something new and fun. (I could go outside of $500 but I don't want to go to far, this is just what I have alloted myself.) I am not sure what to get myself. One million internets to the person who suggests something AWESOME!
Here are things I have, that I am not looking to replace:
- Computer
- Phone
- Audio System (both for PC and Car)
- Monitor
- Webcam
- Headphones w/Mic
- Camera
Some of my interests:
- All things nerdy
I don't watch T.V. so anything T.V. related is out. Thanks for your help!
Take it to Jack Binion's and put it all on black.

Ehemm Desire Z or the new G2 (Same thing) youll be happy
you could give it to me..... Or if you want to be greedy and spend it on yourself , then you could buy a remote control helicopter with a video camera on the front and record all types of cool stuff
Well Lets see, you could buy a projector and set it up with your game console or have a small home theater: http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B002KKCVSW/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=UTF8
Or you could get an SSD: http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-Technology-RealSSD-Solid-CTFDDAC256MAG-1G1/dp/B0039SM0B2

On a side note the helicopter with camera sounds interestings and so does a projection screen. HMM.
I vote for an RC helicopter. It's one of the most fun hobbies EVAR!!
You can get quite a nice CCP for $500 but if you've never flown a below before you can get a great indoor starter for around $100. Plus if you spend $500 you wont have any budget left for replacement parts. Go for a smaller one, by the time you spend another $100 on blades you'll be a pro Look for the Esky Lama, lots and lots of fun.

Short question.

My question. In the field of computer programming at this stage is it worth the 2 year investment of time and money to get a degree in computer programming? I'm 28 married with 4 kids. Is it a good possible career choice? I know its mostly dependent on whether you care enough to be good at it. Or is it a field that is flooded with new talent making it not so much worth it unless it been your passion since you were in your teens?

But seriously. The job market is saturated with programmers and unless you have some programming experience it will be difficult. Also, if you still want to do it then pick up some text books and read it yourself. I can send you a C++ and a Java book in pdf. The ones I'm using this semester.

The PDFs would be great. Pm me for email. Though I don't known if a saturated market now with as many people out of work as there are will necessarily be so saturated in 2 year. I personally don't think that the american economy is ready to quit nor is the american spirit of in general. Sorry I know I said short question and turned it into a much longer question. I do enjoy messing around with the smart phones. I'm learning quite a bit. I appreciate the responses. I do think I'm going to go for it in the winter quarter.

If you're only in it for the money you won't go far. If computers/programming is something you're passionate about there's no limit to what you can do. People who love what they do are always successful compared to people only in it for the money because when they love what they do it becomes apparent in their work.
So would it be a bad idea for me to go into computer science when I go to college in 4 years?

Like I said, it depends on why you're doing it. If it's for the money your time might be better spent on a different major, but if you genuinely are doing it out of a love for computers you won't regret it.

I don't know that I can agree with that. While someone who has a true passion for something can be better than someone that doesn't would you really feel comfortable with a complete moron with a passion for cars to do your brakes? Its a simple enough system but should a step be missed the consequences could be deadly. Think about the mechanics from the Jim Carey movie the mask. for anyone to make a career of something over a hobby the major motivator is undoubtedly money. No matter the passion for you'll find very few people who would work on a strangers car for free. Me personally I am very passionate about cars. I enjoy restoring them, modifying them, adding that custom touch to make it stand out. Would i make a career of it? No I found after years in the industry I much prefer it as a hobby. Even though I have made insane money selling cars that I've restored or even my 10 second street legal camaro. I have a closet full of trophies from the 71 super Beatle restoration project I did in high school and spent a year and a half trailering to shows. I've also started at a restaurant as a bus boy and worked to general manager with no passion for the food service industry. Passion does not guarantee success. Unless that passion is placed in making g yourself the best you can possibly be at anything you do.

What to buy?18th birthday...

Ok guys I have a dillema right here, that's why I went straight to the off topic page, and start writing this.So my birthday is soon,to be exact my 18th,my brother said he wants to buy me something, therefore I have two choices, and to be honest,I don't know what to choose. So my choices are either a an electric guitar,or a laptop or chuall I be more precise a Chromebook. Now since it's my 18th and I getting this from my brother,I have to choose wisely...Chromebook,yeah I would use it,what else I would need it,installing ubuntu eclipse and start a little programing, plus I need it for school and documents, and basically nothing else, alright maybe a movie or two,and a little bit of music.Guitar, hmmm let's see.I would like to get it,I would like to learn to play because let's say this is my first time of gettin a guitar, and I absoluetly have no experience in the same.I would like to learn to play all the famouse solos and,I am not expecting anything big,but like just playing for myself,so what to do,if ou have any idea about any of this, guys please, help! Thanks!
Get the chrome book, learning guitar takes a lot of time and every time you stop for a while you have to work hard to learn it again. However, if you have a lot of time and you really want it, get the guitar

Then a chrome book would be perfect, it has a nice battery life and its light, but I recommend you putting a large HDD in it and install a Linux distro (don't use Ubuntu, its slow as hell)

Go for the chromebook
Tried to learn guitar via self study myself...i accomplished to learn the open string chrods, and switching between those, but thats it, after that i began my life as a student and ever since i barely came around to touch my guitar :/

Chromebook is the best choice. I bought a guitar and gave up because I remembered that I am not musically inclined.

Get a guitar. It's more real life orientated. The Chromebook will just make you spend more time in a world that doesn't exist (although I do have a Chromebook and totally adore it!)

You don't think the computer could benefit him with him going to school?

The problem with a guitar is that it takes a lot of time and passion but if you have both Time and passion you should definately take the guitar

Of course it would, but he's going to spend the vast majority of his life out of school. I believe in spiritual learning, not knowledge cramming.

What? Getting on XDA during class is the best spiritual learning there is.

Yet there are many other things to do, like a sport (for example: climbing, swimming, diving or any fight sport like judo) in my oppinion these things bring you more than learning guitar...especially when you try to do it via self study...you need reeeeally much time and you have to be very disciplined, if you havnt got both then guitar would not be as good as a chromebook, which you will need for university more than a guitar

How about gettin some moneh and savin it fo college :cyclops:
Ah man,I guess this is not so serious but it is a tough decision, like when women choose between shoes and dress....but anyway hey,I talked to couple of people that have a guitar and are programmers in fact. They told me if I really want to buy a guitar,I have to start with acoustic (I have 0 experience in playing a guitar). So first get acoustic, play well on it and than go to electric, which to be honest,I don't like that idea, because I don't have neither time or money for doing that.Yet I would also like soo much to learn to play Santana,Slash,Van Halen and many other famous guitarists. But looks all my efforts for buying a guitar are going to waste, mainly because of the reasons above. But hey heads up!! right..?I would like to have a chromebook,I would definitely use it,and when I get money from being a world leading developer,I will buy a guitar!Still right..?
