My sister's captivate has decided not to charge anymore. Nothing was updated on the phone it just will not charge. The phone is about 6 months old. When I try and charge with a USB cable on the computer I got nothing. When I use a wall charger same thing. I can't even get into recovery mode. Holding down the vol button and power does nothing. I've taken the battery out and the sim and it still will not charge. Every once and a while I can get it to briefly shown on the screen what looks like a circle with stars around it rotating then it shuts off. Does this indicate that the battery is bad or something else? I also tried the Odin 1 click thing but it didn't do anything. HELP HELP!!
Did you use the same usb to charge it with pc and wall charger? If so have you tried a different usb.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Yes I've tried 2 different chargers, none work...
May just have a bad battery, do you have another captivate battery to test in the phone?
Have you tried getting the phone in to Download mode? This thread has a Eclair Odin with the different key combos to get in to Down load mode.
Stock Eclair Odin
Yeah I've tried all of Odin's key combo things..
Also you might want to look in to making or buying a jig if the key combos do not work. They are relatively cheap to buy but a quick easy guide to making one is here.
Layman Jig
If you didn't do anything to the phone and it just stop working, you might look in to att see if they replace it. If its under a year samsung's warranty might cover it
If you go to att they should let you try out with a different battery just head over to the service center and hopefully your not running a custom rom. Try a different battery nonetheless.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
You could try a different battery or try an external battery charger, if that charges the battery just fine then it's the usb port on the phone and not the battery. In any case both issues should be covered under warranty, they will either give a new battery or replace the whole phone if it's the port.
I plug it in the charger and the light blinks.. So I know it works.
And also the buttons on the phone vibrate..
This happened before. And I started pressing all the buttons on my phone.. and it turned back on luckily.
But now this time it wont turn back on..
Is there any method that can help me fix this.
Thank you
sorry for the bump.. But can anyone help me please? I slept with it in my pocket and I woke up.. And this is what happened..
Havent got to use my phone all day.
Orange light comes on and everything. Its just I cant get the screen to turn on..
I am not sure if it will work but try taking your battery out for 5-10 minutes and see if it comes back on.

EDIT: I have stopped looking for these threads. The more I look, the more I find. If the above threads don't convince you that there is a serious issue with the vivid, then adding more of the same problem will no longer help.
I have added this thread to a growing list of similar threads. Please read the other threads and see if your issues seem familiar.
From what I understand... Don't let your battery run out on this phone. Some Vivids kill batteries.
Solution? None yet.
1. Buy a new battery once a couple of months-ish, until someone figures out why some Vivids are eating batteries. YMMV
*OR*
2. You might invest in a external charger and see if that can bring the "Vivid munched" battery back to life. YMMV
I vote to thread merge the above threads if this proves to be the issue.
Almost the same problem
I have almost the same problem, except it does NOT flash the orange charge light, at all. The buttons don't vibrate, at all, the screen stays black, it doesn't turn on or anything. It doesn't even connect to the computer when I plug in a USB cord, that I know works. I don't believe it's bricked because I have done nothing to brick it. One day, I was using Xbox smartglasses, I finished and locked the phone back, a bit later I tried to unlock it but it wouldn't unlock, turn on or anything. I'm fairly certain is wasn't dead because I had just charged it the night before and had not had it turned on, and the battery was over 95%. Does anyone know anything that might help? :/
Soo my phone just died and I plugged it into the charger. I left for like 10min came back and it didnt turn on.
I plugged out the charger and put it back in, then the orange like would light up for about 5 seconds then turn back off. Right after that my home, menu, back, and search button would vibrate everytime id touch them.
I tried to take out battery for 5min then insert it back in and turn it on.
Still a blank screen.
Everytime I plug in the charger into the phone. Light would come up, go away, then buttons vibrate.
Anyone have a solution for this problem?
Will be much appreciated! :good:
Funny you ask, my phone did the exact same thing for about 3 days. Was afraid to take it in since it's rooted, however figured it was worth a shot, took it in, let them take a look. They didn't bother checking the phone other than putting in a code to show the battery stats. Declared it was a faulty battery and was still under manufactured warranty so they ordered and shipped me a brand new battery. Matter of fact I just received it today and am now typing from the very same phone. It's just the battery

I dont think I have a warrenty. Do you really think its the battery?
One time it successfully turned back on. I cant remember how I did it... lol
Yea its definitely the battery. I left it plugged in alllll day and nothing. It would flash for 10 seconds then turn solid for 5 then turn off. Bottom buttons would have that haptic feedback. But screen wouldn't turn on. I put the new battery in about 3 hours ago after getting off of work (they fed exed) it. And it has worked ever since. P.S. If you have att you are always under the standard manufacturers warranty for one year from purchase date. It doesn't hurt to call and ask or take it in.

It cant be possible, because ive actually got it turned back on before....
It just seems like everytime my phone dies I have this problem.
and it takes forever to get it to work again..
Well if it's the battery just order an anker battery off amazon. Anker is actually a great company and I have 2 anker batteries right now as spares as well as an external anker power bank for instant charging purposes.

Yea probably the battery. HTC will most likely send you a new one for free if you let them know what's going on. Or just go to your local AT&T/Bell/Rogers/etc store and they'll get you a new battery.

I had a similar problem a couple of months ago. Battery ran out, so I put my phone on the charger. Orange light came on for maybe 3 seconds, then the orange light would continually flash, must have happened all night once and it didn't gain any charge... Every night afterwards for about a week it was doing the same thing, only way I could fix it every time was to alternate battery pulls with unplugging the charger until the orange light stuck on. It took half an hour to get it to stay on sometimes.. But, since I've been using my new battery I've had no problems at all, even with the old battery, I try to circulate batteries all the time.. I'm at a loss as to what's causing my (old) issue. Lol, just remembered something silly and probably unrelated, but I think the problem stopped around the same time my original battery went through the wash.. I know I shouldn't be using it, but it seems to hold charge better as well this is not a recommendation to go out and run batteries through a washing machine cycle though ;-) just saying

So stupid these batteries. My dad's vivid hasnt had this issue, mine has, it did the exact same thing, I put my battery in his it wouldnt charge, put his in mine, it booted. I bought a new battery. White HTC vivid.
glad I found this thread I am having the same issue on my vivid. I unplug and pull battery but when trying to reboot orange light flashes a couple seconds and I just get feedback from the keys. I got it to work yesterday but I went ahead and turned it off and now I am back to nothing. See if replacing battery works. Do any other HTC batteries work or only ones specific to the vivid?
Potential Fix
Alright, had same problem as the OP and got my phone to turn back on by following these steps:
Plug in the phone, (get the brief orange light / Softkey vibrates) and let sit for about an hour.
Remove phone from charger.
Remove battery from phone.
Wait for about 30 seconds.
Insert battery into phone.
Do *NOT* plug the wall charger back in yet.
Attempt to power on phone.
Mine fired up to the HTC logo, and I was able to plug the charger back in. When it got to the home screen I had 28% battery life, so I'm pretty sure its charging even though its not turning on.
I'm not trying to suggest it isn't a bad battery. Or hardware. Or the universe hating you. I'm just letting you know what worked for me in the hopes it helps someone else.
Also, I haven't had the luxury to try and replicate these steps as a 100% success rate. I'm really not trying to let the phone die completely.
I just posted the same question about this strange thing a few minutes ago, only to realise someone was having similar problems.
I'm located out the US so i'm hoping one these shops have a battery for this phone.
I'm going to try g33mt4z method and try battery pull with the power on and see if that helps cause i have no other alternative for a battery if non is on island and I'll have to order one online
thanks

Ok guys I think I got it.
What I did was
Take out the battery
Put the batter back in
Plug in the charger
When the light come on hold down Vol down and power button
When phone boots to bootlader choose recovery
you will get white HTC creen, leave phone plugged in for a while 30 mins or so
then while leaving charger plugged in attempt to power phone pn
phone should boot regularly
Finally.... don't let phone battery run down or get external charger or change to twrp as one person suggested.
I'm just glad that I was able to get my phone booted, as I live outside the US can't go to an ATT store and HTC phones aren't the most popular here.
I'm wondering if I should order a battery from Amazon just in case
As the title says, my HTC Vivid won't turn on, charge or anything. The orange light that says it's charging doesn't turn on, buttons don't vibrate or anything. It shouldn't be bricked because I haven't done anything to brick it. I was using Xbox Smartglass on it, I locked the phone and went back to my game, about 15 minutes later I tried to unlock it and it did nothing. The battery shouldn't have been dead because I charged it the night before. Any suggestions or help please?

LOL The reason I got a Vivid is because he gave it to me. Sadly, I was hoping there would be a technical solution instead of trying a new battery. I've got one ordered though. :/
Some have bad batteries.
Mine started doing the same thing. For a while I thought the battery life on Vivid was horrible compared to the Aria I had at the time. Then it progressed and one day finally quit completely and would not take a charge from any charger I had. So, being a techhead I decided to probe the battery with a multimeter and it showed very little voltage, so low I guess the charger wouldn't even recognize or try to charge it.
So what I did was take a battery charger I had for a walkie talkie radio and touched the leads to the battery for 3-5 seconds or so, put battery back in phone and it would then charge. I did this a few times until I could get to ATT store and the guy ordered a new one through warranty. Haven't had a problem with the Vivid since.
Same Problem
Last night I pulled my battery at 21% after shutting the phone off to clear the memory. I put the battery back in and put it on the charger, I tried to turn the phone on and nothing. It is not showing that it is charging. I have four batteries for this phone and none of them will turn on the phone. I am at a loss here. The phone was working fine until i shut it down and removed the battery. Any ideas on what is causing this or any way to force it to turn on.

That sounds like a royal pain.
Could it be the changer or its USB cable? Work some contact cleaner into the power button?
I'm having this same issue. I'm not sure if it's the battery, since the phone boots to bootloader just fine. But the battery won't charge when the phone is off (red light comes on for a second, then quits) and I can't get past the HTC screen booting to ROM or recovery. Where is a good place to buy a battery?
Even if the power button was bad the phone should still charge a battery. I have a charger that will charge the batteries without the phone so I know the batteries are charged. I have several different chargers and none of them will show the phone charging. I even tried connecting it to my computer. The phone is dead, I guess I am going to have to crack it open and see if anything has come loose inside. I really like this phone and am going to hate loosing it. I paid a lot for this phone. That shinny penny I paid to get this phone was my favorite.
Have you tried plugging the phone USB into a desktop and using that to try rebooting the phone into bootloader or recovery?
Hasoon2000's Vivid All-In-One Toolkit in the dev section can do that pretty simply. i used an earlier version of that to unlock the phone a year and a half ago.
i don't remember if the phone has to have debugging turned on for the desktop to feed it commands.
Even if this works i dunno whatall it'll prove.
i like this phone too a lot, and am sorry yours seem to be having hardware problems.

The phone does not turn on at all so getting to the bootloader is impossible. It does nothing. Does not even charge a battery. .

That's the definition of a bricked phone, was what i meant. No screen, no led, no button function, no sign of life, and from no explicable cause.
Android phones don't have real on-off switches that directly disconnects the phone from power. Its failure to manifest signs of life doesn't absolutely indicate irreversible hardware failure. There's a bit of a chance it's firmware.
Aside from the power button, Android phones can be controlled thru the USB port.
I took your advise and plugged the phone into the computer and left it over night. This morning I rebooted the computer and the phone screen lit up. I got all excited and tried to use adb to reboot into bootloader, Of course the phone was not found. I took the phone off the cord and the screen shut off. I pushed the power button and the screen lit up. Let go of the power button and the screen goes off. I tried another usb cord and now the screen no longer lites up. Maybe there is hope for this phone.
If the screen lights up like that... there is power to it...
Sounds like you have dirt in your power button... or the button isn't making contact...
Time to disassemble and check the power button...

Yeah, that part where the phone was seen by the desktop, and then not, can have something to do with the Windows drivers. Most of the folks on these forums know what's with this stuff better than me; i usually have to tell windows to stop the hardware, disconnect and reconnect the phone USB and start the connection up again, every time before i do one set of commands, like put the phone into bootloader and download a kernel image into it.
There's a Vivid unbricking project over in the dev subforum, you must've seen that. Whether or not you get your phone working again, i hope it'll be a productive journey for you.
i was perfectly happy just messing with apps until i bricked my tablet; that got me into all this device unlocking and rom burning and fun stuff. It's too bad the Vivid isn't simpler to hack.
my phone cant boot to desktop after i flash the kanel
my phone cant boot to desktop after i flash the kanel please can you help me
9 times out of 10, if the phone will not turn on at all it is the battery. For some reason, the Vivid will occasionally stop seeing the battery. I have fixed this on mine when that happened by using an external charger. That worked because my battery was actually OK, the Vivid just wouldn't charge it or even see it. Once it was charged it was fine. If your battery really is dead (sounds like it might be the case), get a new battery. There is a 2000 mHr battery on Amazon that is not too much worse than the original (when new).
I had the same issue once, it turns out that I fixed it using a external charger
Hi guys,
I want to open these post, for a people like me, who doesnt turn on her HTC Incredible S, because it has a bricked soft..
Me history begans, when after many weeks with the KitKat ROM from lord master szezso, without problems. One day the phone shutdown for empty battery, when I return home and put them to charged, nothing happens, charged light dont works, phone dont turn on
I have a external battery charger and other battery, I tried with these one, but phone dont turn on. Them I buy the usb connector for the phone, I changed, with a tester I check energy on the motherboard and energys comes ok, to all the phone components. Becuase these, I considered my problem a soft problem, I dont know with or how, but something doesnt give the phone turn on.
Maybe, between all of us, we can make a Brainstorm of ideas, for all people who gave similar problems.
