Should I buy a Smartphone Or Laptop - Off-topic

There is a question trouble me for a long time. Should I buy a smartphone or laptop. The fact is within my budget, i just can buy one of them. I want to buy a smartphone for a longtime. The question is my laptop just broken down these days. My parents think i should buy a new laptop instead. I think smartphone is more convenient than a laptop.
This is really hard to decided.

Depends what you need it for. If you just check emails, surf the net, Facebook, twitter, etc then a smartphone is all you need. A smartphone / tablet right now can't replace a computer but it is close.

Did you join just to ask this question?
- this sig is just so I don't have to write 10char when on my phone -

I think you better buy the notebook. Just image that you need to work all day on a smartphone because you have no computer.

Depends if you already have a desktop computer, and where you want to use your laptop for. If it is for work/school i would buy a laptop since it is better to work on all day, if it is just to browse and play games if your bored pick a smartphone if you already have a desktop computer.

I'd suggest to go with your parent's decision. If I'm at this option I'll definitely chose Laptop. You could get bored with Smartphone after long use. But using computer, there is nothing called boring.
And finally if the budget matters, still you could get a decent smartphone with budget price. There are pretty low cost budget Android phones.

You can better get an good notebook, instead buying an cheap one. Because you will be sorry for that and same goes for smartphones, buy you are more lucky anno 2012 as the old high end devices like HTC Desire HD, HTC Sensation ( XE, XL ), HTC Evo 3D sell much cheaper now and also Samsung iGalaxy S2 sells cheaper now.
So when it comes down to smartphones it can be worth to wait awhile and buy when the prices drop, as they will in certain countries and right now in certain countries you have the luck off obtaining an really good smartphone for less then € 300 ( HTC Evo 3D ).
When it comes down to notebooks, waiting awhile doesn't change the price so much at least that's mine observation. Yes you might find an Q4 2011 notebook cheaper then an Q1 2012 notebook, mine notebook was from November 2011 and I bought it new in Januari 2012 with an great discount promotion.
For the amount what an iSuck 4S cost you get an good notebook, okay no SSD but you might be lucky to find an quad core notebook ( I did found an quad core I7 notebook for that amount ).
Cheapest best bang for bucks is right now HTC Evo 3D if you ask me.

yes, as said it depends on your needs.
You can make project reports, presentations on a laptop or netbook but on a smartphone how long can you work without a stop?

Both?

Again i will agree it depends on what your doing if you need it for school or work go notebook. if your just looking for somehting to mess around on, kill time, and have fun. then smart phone. benefits of a good smart phone is it can be a hand held gameing device, internet on the go, social media made easy, and many other things. but if you ever have to write a paper or report on a smart phone your gunna hate your self quick!

I had the same question at the back of my mind a couple of months ago. Get a galaxy s2 that i've wanted for ages or get a new laptop as my pc is buggered.
As you can see I got the smartphone, and havent used my pc hardly at all.
Like a previous poster said, it all depends what you need the laptop for, but the galaxy s2 is one off the smartest purchases i've made in a while

Compared with laptop, smartphone is more convenient. In fact, laptop is more useful, we can do much work.

Thanks a lot to you guys. I am so sorry i came back too late.
Your warm-hearted suggestion will take into consideration. Thanks.....

Get a smartphone
Get a smartphone
Get a smartphone
Get a smartphone
Get a smartphone
I would get a smartphone. If you are into trying different roms and stuff you won't get bored with it for a long long time. Also you can use is as an mp3 player, play games, etc. Do you currently own a cellphone?

well if you are going to school then definetly you should buy a laptop.

Get a phone on contract where you get a laptop as a gift... My girlfriend's dad did it. He got a crap phone on contract (from Carphone Warehouse, UK) and got a pretty decent laptop free with it. Two birds, one stone!

So I Bought An Apple Product Today

So in most cases I would not even bother with iPods, iPhones, etc. but then I saw this:
http://lunatik.com/lunatik
A high quality (And well reviewed) watch housing for the 6th gen nano. Considering I am a huge fan of minimalist design and I never really had a watch that I have liked, I bought one. It didn't hurt that I had graduation cash to burn. Found a NIB nano on eBay for about 125 and I feel like I will be using this for many years to come. I am actually excited for this and they should both arrive at about the same time.
So, XDA. Thoughts? Am I stupid for being suckered in to this? (Don't worry. You can't make me regret it) Have you ever found some odd reason to justify buying an Apple product? Share

No. I was about to buy an air a month ago or so and I just could not bring myself to support such a horrible company. The air has a great price point when compared to other ultra portables, but it is still an apple product.
Conversation I had about apple the other day on g+

Indeed it is. I had some extra cash (No I am not spoiled, graduation cash) and I felt like I should make one little splurge purchase. Everything else I have purchased has been on sale stuff or used things to save money
That's a sick watch. I would totally get one, that is if I had an iPod Nano. But nano lost it's video playing skills and besides why do you need it if you own a SGS II and a HP Touchpad, not to brag or anything.
What color did you get? Red looks damn right sexy to me.

No I have not and I never will. I cannot stand apple and I will never buy a product from them.
I do like the watch except for the rubber watch bands. I could never get into rubber watch bands, too 80's for me.
I too am a fan of minimalist ideas, that's why my phone is my clock, music player, camera, portable computer, etc.

I can't stand Apple products.
Lol jk, posting this from my iPad. Lol
Apparently this thing ships from China :/
I will be getting my nano this week but this won't get here until like two weeks from tomorrow. Eek
Seems expensive to me, cool though.
I see two main issues.
- Going flat always pressing buttons to check the time.
- Having headphones tethered to your hand would be awkward.
I cant imagine having a "watch" that you'd need to charge......
With regards to Apple in general.
I want a Mac / MacBook solely for audio stuff. Pro audio software just runs better on macs.
Cant justify the cost though....
I can see myself throwing it on the charger nightly not too bad.
As far as audio stuff goes, I get along pretty well on my PC. Linux has some nice choices as well

Droid Bionic FREE w/ 2 year contract!!!

http://wireless.amazon.com/Motorola...nypincher&pf_rd_p=1323240242&pf_rd_s=center-1
Saw this deal and thought you might like to know.
Amazon has the Droid Bionic FREE w/ a 2 year contract for new customers (not upgrades)
Hope this helps someone
That sure is a great way to start with Verizon....
I just bought this phone for 179 last month from them as a new customer... Sigh. Atleast this will hopefully get some more ppl involved in developing for this phone

Crazy to me that no one jumped on this deal
3 replies for a free Droid Bionic?
I know most of the people here have the Bionic already but I would think a few new members would jump on this deal asap.
No, lol. No one wants a locked BL POS when the phones on the horizon are looking so much better. Tuesday 2 or 3 phones, both of which are going to be better than the Bionic will be announced.
One of which is a Samsung, and the other is called 'Rezound'. I'll take a pass.
hmm... i take it that deal's just if you're going through amazon. my thunderbolt is having issues(needs a new screen+digitizer) and i called verizon. they offered to mail me a new bionic for $300 & i can keep the thunderbolt to.

As a former captivate owner I feel your pain. It's not just their phones either. I had terrible experiences with their bluray players as well.
The Amazon deal for the Bionic is a steal.

I had a DLP TV of theirs a few years back. One of the first 1080P projection models, back when LCDs of that size were prohibitively expensive. Gorgeous screen, but the speakers went out within 6 months of use, the tuner flaked out... "Pretty to look at, but useless" summarizes my experience with Samsung in general.
Generally speaking, I've actually heard really great things about samsung TV's and monitors and I've had pretty good experiences. My family has 4 samsung TV's and 2 monitors and none of them have had problems. They're all currently in the 2-4 year age range. I also know a couple of friends that have had TV's for a couple years with good results thus far. It's not hard to find bad apples for any company.
The upcoming samsung device is supposed to be a google experience device, isn't it? I kind of separate google experience devices from normal devices of any one company. I wouldn't say they're miraculous devices or anything like that, but they definitely seem to be of higher quality, in general.

Hardware wise they're pretty ordinary- or at least share components with other phones (HTC Incredible/N1 and Galaxy S/N-S). It's the leaner software that makes them unique. But you're right, it only takes a few bad experiences to sour my opinion of a company in general. And I would say I've been saddled with an inordinate number of lemons.
What really tempers my opinion is that all of my Galaxy S phones (Captivate, Fascinate and finally Charge) had more or less the same issues. The Cappy was the only one that shut itself down from idle (thankfully), but the other two had the same problems with not getting calls or texts, terrible GPS, inconsistent data connection, heat management, etc. It seems to me that Samsung just can't get their software QA right. I would certainly hope a true Nexus phone would be different... and I didn't hear any bad reports about the Nexus S, so one Samsung warranty exchange fewer and I might have given it a try. As is, I'm giving Moto their fair shot.

Sell my HP touchpad towards a ps vita?

I need opinions. I'm drooling over the ps vita and loved the orgiginal psp. I literally used mine for years. Problem is that it is just so damn expensive. As for the touchpad, it is nice but I don't find myself using it that much; even with android on it. I was one of those die hard webos fans, but the platform is dead now so I'm on the edge. Any thoughts?

the vita is really good spec wise, ive already pre ordered mine, but apparently, its had some bad reviews and sony aint been happy bout that cuz it was supposed to sell very well without many problems,to be honest im going to take the risk and still get it even if it has problems cuz its too awesome to not get,so i would recommend you to sell your touchpad to get it cuz you'll have more fun with the vita
I am in the same boat. I already bought one the 3G bundle for 266 on lockerz. I don't really use my touchpad all that often. I probably will sell it for 250 to make most of my money back.

Nexus 4 - Discussion Thread

I figured many users may want to express what they feel about the new Nexus 4.
Well, in my opinion - It surely is a beast - I don't like the look of it though - The back looks stunning but the front is kind of weird.
THE BEST PART - The price is INSANE! 349 for 16GB GSM - Getting a 2G, Quad Core BEAST is INSANE!
Sorry for caps but it's just amazing! I'm trying to sell out my Nexus to get the N4.
The thing I don't like - It's not SuperAmoled - But it's not Pentile either.
Android 4.2 features are amazing, it looks smooth! I love that they finally included quick settings and the sphere camera thing is epic.
Let's get this thread going
the phone is very cheap for the hardware, but i think if it won´t offer a better batterylife i can wait. the nexus itself is awesome and very fast, there´s no need for me atm for more power xD
i hate the fact that google is gonna take the way of apple, getting money (50€/$) for 8gb extra internal storage... and the 8gb version makes not much sense. if u own such a device, you´d like to play games, that take benefits from the hardware and such games are 1gb+. all in all i can wait for the moment. in 2months i can get a new phone, because my contract is gonna expire
i´d always prefer a nexus, but hd display, with only 16gb storage sucks if u want to watch hd videos :/ so i might take an s3 or nexus tablet for that and stick to the nexus as mainphone, we´ll see.

I got mine on 10/5, so about 3 weeks ago. Does anyone know anyway to convince Google to take it as a return? I see they have 15 days only on their website, which is honestly a joke... Except for big ticket items (cars, homes, etc.) the standard should really be 30 days and I'd even say up to 90. Anyway, any guidance is helpful, if there isn't any, no big deal.

How the hell Google is taking way of apple when Google is selling their flagship phone for $300-$350? Apple charges $700 for the unlocked iPhone 5. At this price I don't think there is any room to complain.

I am seriously considering getting one of these babies at launch. The specs look fantastic and I have grown to love stock android since getting my Nexus 7. I'm hoping I can set my 6 month old One X about £270-280 so that it will cover this purchase. The only downgrade will be the storage space but considering I only use about 4gb of the available space on my One X it won't be an issue.
I understand for some 16gb won't be enough. But if you look at what Google has done with the Nexus 7 I wouldn't be surprised to see a 32gb model released a few months down the line.
I'd like to see a screen comparison between the One X and the Nexus 4. I LOVE the screen on my One X and if the Nexus 4 screen isn't at a similar level it could make me decide to stick with what I have.

Undoubtedly! The Nexus 4 is SO cheap! I can literally sell my Galaxy Nexus right now for the same price of the Nexus 4.
At this point it may be difficult to sell the GNex at New pricing, unless you literally ordered it before it was removed from Play or you use convincing-enough wording when listing it on Amazon.

I'm going to buy direct from Google and switch to GiffGaff. It runs on o2's network so the signal will be the same. They have a variety of very low priced offers. Check it out: http://giffgaff.com/
I've cancelled my contract with Vodafone. Contracts are just too expensive in the long run. This phone will be around £25-30 for 2 years. That makes a total price of £600-720. Buying direct and using GiffGaffs £10 a month offer after two years it is £520

Why Teens Don't Need a Smartphone

Smartphones are super expensive and my teen has been begging me to get him one. I know that the only thing he might actually do with it just access facebook and twitter and just play some stupid games.
Don't buy your teen a smartphone.

Don't be so quick to think that way. First of all, the article's only argument is that the price is high, and it is cheaper to use Facebook and twitter from home. In addition, it even states an argument against itself (I like it because the author is not biased) which says the teen years are a memorable time and the convenient camera captures those memories.
So basically, buy a Galaxy Nexus off contract (~$270), activate it on a cheap prepaid plan, and blam! You don't even need to get data, just have him connect to WiFi.
In fact, you can even just get an unlocked Nexus S (~$130) or Galaxy S (~$100) and they should fit his needs enough.
The article pertains to on contract high end phones (specifically an iPhone 5), but you can greatly reduce the price by buying a previous flagship and use a prepaid plan.

True but teens fall into peer pressure and the iPhone is the greatest status symbol.
It might just be cheaper to get the iPhone 5 unlocked...but $650 to fish out is a lot of money..considering you could buy a full fledged laptop in that same amount...or an HD LED TV from Sony.

Dirt cheap now that they are 2 years old, but solid performers. Plenty development, so (if it even matters to him) he will have the latest version of Android running on it.
I agree, peer pressure is definitely a factor, but getting an Android stands out among all the iPhones I see in teens' hands these days

I wouldn't buy my child a smartphone until they're 15 or older, so many kids text during class now, no wonder kids are less educated than when I went to school.
Well, brace yourselves, here comes a 16 year olds opinion. What my dad did was get me a plan, but I had to buy the phone. It was great because it taught me some responsibility and gave me some leeway. Please don't lock your kid down from having a social life, also don't let him buy an iPhone. And yes, this nexus 4 was paid for in while by me. As where my previous 3 phones.

Well, the thing is even dumb phones can text, so in order to prevent that you need to not let your child have a phone at all.
Or just good parenting

Let me tell you one thing. When I was in hs we all had blackberries and iphones 3g. Yes there were those kid who were into drama and stuff and non stop texting and they don't learn anything but there good uses for 15 year old to have a cell.
Although I don't condone cheating Google the answer to capital of new York is better than guessing a wrong answer because you'll know and remember rather than go on not knowing.
The other is for communication. Especially after what happened in Connecticut you child needs to call out or if they go out and get peer pressured to do something bad, they can call a friend to come or call you to pick them up before they are guilty by association.
Last reason is that bullying. We want the best phones and kid like to make fun of others who are less fortunate then they are. When you get older you view being bullying differently but could be devastating for a teen who hasn't experienced the adult world.
Smartphone for teen. Lab top or PC. Yes
Tablet and brand new car. Get a job!

The Nexus S is not going to get the Key Lime Pie update...
Without updates, its going to go out of style very fast. Galaxy Nexus is still a solid buy
Buddy you'll be shocked that lots of decent developers here on xda-developers are teen. I myself started symbian development at the age of 17. So I think it's best not to generalize teens.
I had to pay for my first smartphone and Plan. The only thing I had was a "dumb phone" and it was for 911 only. So any teen who thinks getting a smartphone is in the bill of rights, need's to get a job. ( If want to give them one as a gift, because they did well or what ever ok.) But Don't make them think for one sec it's a right to have a free smartphone+plan.
That's all I have to say.
If they work for it that is great, but if a teenager wants something enough they can make money to get it

Learn the magic of ROMs, boy. The Nexus S didn't even get the 4.2 update, but voila! A few days after the N4 was released, 4.2 ROM!
Also, if your kid isn't really like the teens on xda, he probably won't know or care about software updates.

As a 15 year old teen, I'd say that, by a side, it does indeed can get in the way of school. Sometimes I get distracted with it instead of studing (at home). But, on another side, I see it as my tool to do a lot of things during my day. I listen to music with it, I often access my school website for grading check (hard to explain my school grade method) during classes with data (no WiFi access to students), I write all my tests, control my classes with it, takes notes, be related to school or not, it's also my communtication tool. And many other things not mentioned...

I agree with you completely mate. It teaches teens about financial responsibility. It also shows them that they are not entitled to a smartphone but rather something that is earned.
Good luck mate

Tell your son that. Let him choose the plan and the phone as long as he pays for it. You will have to make sure he doesn't get some crap China phone that'll break in a day, but otherwise it's all up to him to find the best deals etc.
Good luck to you, lol aren't you the OP who are you saying good luck to

Exactly. A phone basically should have thing in mine, to get in contact with some1 when they are doing a lot of work. Something was when I first got a job, my parents got me a phone so I could makes calls when I wasn't in school.
Since upgrading to a smartphone, its more than just a phone, you can access the internet with it and it can be a huge distraction, but its so much better then most phones out there.
To give your son a smartphone is a big resposibility, but something I learned is you gotta work to earn it, cant just give it for no work. f he has good grades and shows responsibility with it, then he deserves it. If he starts to show hes slacking behind, then its trouble

Dam.
You must not take a lot of notes cause I am sure you could write much faster than typing on that tiny keyboard.
I bought my teenage daughter a cheap laptop. Put k9 browser on it, an old refurbed iPod 2nd Gen and locked the iTunes store and safari, and then put k9 on it too. She has a dumb phone to call in emergencies and text her friends with. The locks at 8pm and if I see that her grades are slipping the phone and iPod become mine again. If I see she is spending all her time in front of a TV or computer theybget turned off and she goes outside.
That being said she is in Beta club. Gets A's and B's and has as much of a social life as she needs. She also won her class's physical fitness award. The place I spoil her is I let her do some name brand shopping for clothes. As long as I approve.
All in all we have our disagreements but she "gets by" lol.

You actually manage her social life? That's not something I would really look over, unless I know she's with gangsters or drug dealers or whatever. Getting a tad personal there.
(Likewise, I don't look at my son's texts unless I suspect something)
Not judging your parenting, just giving my perspective
