Best Laptop - Off-topic

HI im looking forward to buying a new laptop, but i was wondering which laptop do you guys think is the best one out right now, as far as specs go it doesnt really matter. I just want it to browse the web and other minor things that every laptop has. I dont want to use to play games, i use my xbox 360 for that. But any recommendations would help, thank you guys in advance.

I haz two HP, one IBM thinkpad (yes, thinkpads are Lenovo now), one Acer and two chromebooks. I like them all....
Chromebooks are good for browsing the Web and Gmail and other apps found, in the Chrome Web store. They are pretty light too... Might fit your needs.

I think so. Chrome and chrome apps are good at updating in the background...sometimes I don't even notice the updates. :sly::screwy::what:
There is offline Gmail and Calendar though. (read only access)

Why avoid the major brands. Everyone says avoid dell and HP but never why. I've had two HP laptops and one desktop. Two dell desktops. None had problems that could be attributed to manufacturer. Only was HP telling me I needed too give them 300 to reflash the HD because a password had been put on the BIOS as an administrator turn on password. I asked them how to remove the cmos battery and they said it can't be done. Hung up and they called me back while I had the cover off and was reinserting the cmos battery. Had them stay on the line to just say **** off when it booted up.

First off Dell is good but Overpriced.
If your just searching the web and just doing basic things then about any laptop would suffice.
I would personally go with HP and go no lower then 3-4gb of ram considering how fast computers are needing more and more ram to run

Well Dell doesn't care about customers and there notebooks are just so so, although they are better then HP and Acer.
Dell, HP, Acer are know for high failure rates. Sony, Apple and Asus have low failure rates.
I own an asus now and here for an Dell Studio 1558, well guess what it got an defect after 1 year and 11 months and dell doesn't care about law so they only give you one year warranty.
Asus gave me 2 year.

Last week i use 2 Hp laptops,
probook - high end device's with i5,
-noisy
-and extra warm.
from my expedrience i recomend Asus

My HP XP media center edition laptop is still running strong. I also love the look and feel of Asus Laptops. But I don't care for Dell because every Dell I've owned had a flaky DVDRW. It was almost impossible to burn DVD's.

Asus. I love my Eee PC 1018P.

if your in the uk try this: http://www.novatech.co.uk/laptop/range/nspireb960.html this website is awesome! it is very cheap

I recommend u do the following. Decide in your maximum budget, including tax, that u want to spend on this device. Now, go online to all the major retailers and find the best laptoo for the cheapest. Personally speaking brand loyalty doesn't matter if you take care of the laptop. If windows crashes, reinstall it. Use compressed air and blow it out every month or so. Don't eat while using it. Doing these basic things will ensure a long lifespan.

I love the gateway NV series. Mine has never let me down, felt lacking in performance and has decent battery life too. I have the NV53a with the amd Phenom ii

How do you justify using a tablet instead of a laptop?

I mean tablets are generally more expensive, require a lame data plan, have a barely usable keyboard, and are much more limited in terms of games than say a laptop? I mean all in all I can't find a plus side as to why a tablet beats even the worst laptop I own. I just wanted to get some input as to how a tablet could be better than a laptop... my laptop is barely larger and is actually lighter than most tablets so I can't find a reason to justify buying any except the 5 inch streak (due to it also being a phone)
They're more portable; you have to remember.that tablets are made for consuming data, not inputting.
That makes them great for pretty much any leisurely activity you can think of, but they aren't made to actually do work on.
Waking up and having one in bed; going to the coffee shop and relaxing; using while wwatching tv; these are all possibly better with a tablet.
Hell I have an ipad and I use it for every one of those; I pretty much only use my computer for typing papers, downloading things, and printing documents.
Captivate 2.2.1 Paragon
Well I guess I splurged and bought the Adamo XPS and in terms of portability I'd say they're about equal. I wake up with it next to me and dont even use my TV anymore thanks to netflix on this thing. I mean in my opinion you get all the function of both a laptop and a tablet on a good laptop... I can't think of a thing an ipad can do that my laptop cant and can think of a million things the other way around.

I've been thinking of getting a macbook air 11 inch cause it's all the portability of a tablet but can still do computing. I'm having trouble myself finding a reason to get a tablet because I have a smartphone. Just want one cause of the cool factor. Not others thinking I'm cool, but I think tablets are cool.

As always there is a golden compromise.
I was looking for a tablet like the ZTE Light or Samsung G. Tab but couldn't justify splashing out the money they cost.
Also without an extra (expensive) contract with a provider they would be useless.
Can't see much usefulness in those cheap China made Android tablets without 3G/4G connection, that's flooding the market.
So I stick with my compromise between Laptop and Tablet. A Netbook from 2009.
The Eee PC 1005HA have more power than a Android tablet and longer battery time 3-7 hours, dependent power saving or performance setting for battery power (the batteries have been used daily for two years).
Also Win7starter is a far more powerful OS than any phone-OS.
well....i am trying to justify getting a tablet by selling off my HP multitouch convertible tablet TX2.

i was thinking to get a BLACKBERRY playbook instead of this.

should i sell the laptop or just buy the tablet without letting my laptop off??....AM TORN APART AND CANNOT MAKE A DECESION ON MY OWN. please help mighty, insightful men

Apart from that it's a bloody awful device!
If you hold it portrait it feels top heavy like it wants to fall out of your hand, turn it through 180 and it still feels top heavy.
Apps are expensive, £6-8 for an RDP client which is free on other systems?
£5 for Angry Birds!
It takes at least 5 minutes to turn on.
I spent a day using one and within minutes realised why they just aren't selling.
point taken....but as am from India and have a budget constraint, there are few options for me.
kindle fire, touchpad, color are still not available @ India

Same boat......... Im using an antique toshiba that starts freaking out when it gets too hot, the screen fails and I have to sit it outside to cool down
I feel your pain......
Check around at sites like TigerDirect, Amazon, or NewEgg and you'll surely find a deal. I'm currently using a Gateway NV53 I got from TigerDirect for $400 plus tax with free shipping and it's great, especially for the price (500GB HD, 4GB RAM, Windows 7 Home Premium, AMD Athlon II X2 M300, 15.6" 16:9 HD LED LCD, DVD-Super Multi DL drive, built-in webcam, microphone, and multi-in-one card reader, etc.).
I do recommend you stay away from HP or any of their brands (Compaq specifically), as they tend to have terrible hardware and load their computers up with soooooo much junk you'll spend a day cleaning it up. Go with a Dell, unless there's a really compelling reason to do otherwise, and make sure you check the option to have them NOT fill it up with junkware if they make that option available.
Hope this helps!
I was thinking either dell or Toshiba. I never had a problem with the Toshiba tower computer we had, until it fried itself. And dell, well everything else we have owned desktop wise has affl a dell since like 99. Might check out dell when I'm closer to home and my battery isn't 35% D:

What should I buy?: Nexus 7 & Galaxy Nexus vs. ASUS Padfone

Padfone or G-Nexus-7 combination
I've been using a SIM-free (unlocked and rooted) Motorola Atrix 4G with the lapdock everyday as my "daily-driver" phone/laptop solution since April of last year. I used the webtop, and later on, a modded version of Gentoo with Google Docs and Libre Office to get things done. I work at a university, so if I need something other than regular office software, I just use one of the hundreds of workstations I have access to on our campuses-- I've never experienced the so-called limitations that the lapdock+phone combo presents, and the fact that I ride very crowded trains in Tokyo precludes me from bringing my $1500+ laptop around everyday.
So when the Asus Padfone came out, I was sure that this would be my upgrade path! A phone that goes into a tablet that clips onto a keyboard. Brilliant! But hang on-- now there's the Nexus 7... Pure Google, and OPEN... That plus a Galaxy-Nexus... hmmmmm.... Could that also do the trick??
Well, there's always "let's wait and see a few more months..." But the obvious happened a week ago-- my Atrix's screen gave up the ghost... Sure I can plug it into HDMI, and use the lapdock just fine, but I can't use it as a phone... GRRRR!! Oh, and check out my location to the left-- I live in JAPAN, but I travel a lot, and go back to the US every year; actually, I'm going home in a week for a month!! So I NEED a phone either just before I go, or when I get there....
REQUIREMENTS:
- SIM Free (unlocked): I travel. A lot. Internationally. I needs my unlock!
- Multi-band support: Japan uses 2100MHz for HSPA+, and so does most of Asia. The US is 850, 1900, 1700... I'd like to find a phone that supports both of these... The Padfone will only support the Asian frequency, but nothing in the States-- I'd be stuck on 2G back home for a month... I can tolerate that though because I'll at least have AT&T hotspot support. The G-Nexus of course has a PENTABAND 3G radio (why the F don't other phones <other than the iPhone> have this same radio?!) so it'll work with whatever network I throw at it.
- Open bootloader/Rooted: One of the things I really enjoyed about my Atrix was being able to tweak tweak tweak. The Nexus devices don't need an explanation here-- They're designed to root and tweak. The Padfone can be rooted now--but it's bootloader is locked... But with the exotic tweaks made to get the tablet and phone UI to work, I doubt I'd use a custom ROM anyhow.
- Tablet/Phone combo: I got spoiled by my Atrix. Being able to use a physical keyboard to respond to an incoming text message is really habit-forming. Especially if I need to type it in Japanese. Of course the Padfone would win here... Not sure if there's an app that lets you see the text and MMSs on a phone through a tablet though. The other obvious thing here is that the Padphone *IS* the tablet, once docked into the PadStation. No tethering, no separate data plan, no hotspot needed. The G-Nexus-7 combo would see me tethering the G-Nex to the Nex-7. Is there a simple app that can make an on-demand data connection between the two happen at will?
- Updates: This is what pissed me off about Motorola. The OG Atrix's Tegra 2 processor can more than handle ICS, but here it is almost 6 months later, and nothing. Luckily I can get Kang builds, but certain things just don't work for me--for example Chrome crashes ALL the time. Camera sucks, etc. Hence, I'm over using another Moto device. Obviously the Nexus duo will ALWAYS get the latest and greatest; no-brainer there. Asus? The TF series got their updates to ICS within the first 3 months IIRC. Since Jelly Bean is just a point update, perhaps the Padfone will see an update in the fall sometime--I can live with that.
- Ease of use: Not the OS, but the physical pieces... The G-Nex-7 combo is easy in the way that both are able to use the same charger (micro USB). Padfone just nests together. I like how the Padfone keyboard has USB ports and an SD card slot... Not to mentin BATTERIES galore. It's hard as hell trying to find a place to charge my phone all the time, and sometimes I'd just use the Moto's lapdock as a battery charger!
- Price: this is the kicker... The Galaxy Nexus/ Nexus 7 Combo will come out to less than US$600 when bought from the Google store. Even buying from a grey-market distributor in Taiwan, I can't buy the Padfone/PadStation/Keyboard combo for less that US$1000... I have barely that much to spend though.
Friends, I need some help deciding! Here are my pros and cons for each device as it stands today. I'm posting this in the Padfone, Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7, and my old Motorola Atrix forums as well. I want some good honest and thoughtful opinions-- no haterism, flaming, or retardedness please. This is an extremely important purchase for me, and needs to be done ASAP.
As always, thank you so much for your opinions!
Your answer is in the OP. You're welcome.

And I've heard about ASUS's bad support at times... One of the reasons I switched from using an HP laptop to an Apple one, was because I can walk into any Apple store worldwide and get help with it. (I'm just as mad about them suing everyone into oblivion, and I'm not that flattered with iOS the way I am with Android, but I loves me some OSX for sure.)
Keep the opinions coming y'all. Thanx!
I've owned more than enough Android devices and the thing that always leaves me disenchanted with them in the end is the update fragmentation. I have the n7 on preorder and my x2 is set to be replaced by the g-nex in August. This is just my opinion but I think it's insane that I have to keep flashing roms that may or may not have all of my hardware working correctly just to get an update. Nexus devices represent what I feel google should have done at Androids launch to combat Apple. I plan to use my n7 as an iPad alternative until Windows Surface launches and I can get a tab with fully featured office for productivity.

Exactly this. If for nothing else, these two solid reasons:
A GNex + a Nexus 7 are cheaper than a Padfone
And the battery on the GSM model of the GNex is excellent compared to its LTE counterpart.
Treat yourself to some delicious Jelly Bean. =]
Not to mention, you can just buy the $70 3800mAh extended battery from Seidio with NFC if you are worried about battery life, and you'll still be paying way less than the Padfone. I ordered one for my dad's Verizon GNex the other day, and will finally be able to put in his phone when he comes home on sunday, since no other battery has been good enough, even with the Gummy ROM on his phone. =[
Hmm. Good point. One of my main concerns is battery life since I'll be tethering with this combo a lot. I forgot the NFC chip is in the battery and not the body... also I wonder if NFC is compatible with the Felicia systems used here in Japan for things like train passes and e-money.... the phone I'm using now has it... not a necessity though.

I wouldn't just worry about timely updates. I'd worry about decent performance. My Prime is a quad core device and it sucks total ass at playing games, browsing, and just about everything else. Constant lags and crashes. It's enraging. Do yourself a favor and stay away from Asus devices (the Nexus 7 will likely be different since it's a google device). You'll save yourself some huge headaches.

I think it's incredibly odd that there is so much Asus hate yet the N7 is an Asus device itself. Performance-wise with the N7, i'd imagine apps would perform similarly to the transformer prime seeing as it uses the same processor...

The reason for the Asus hate is not their hardware, it's how they bloat up the OS after google passes it off to them. With the n7 Asus has nothing to do with the OS, they just make the hardware.

So far most responses seem to support the Nexus combo.
I, however, when reading how you use your devices was thinking PadFone all the way. It seems like a better fit for you.
But just my 2 cents.

The problem is, I think most of the benefits he would get from the padfone would be too minor to justify a $300-$400 price premium. And I am also not sure how well the phone part of it does by itself etc, Ive yet to check some reviews of the padfone. For all that extra money he could by himself some nice cases, screen protectors, bluetooth headsets etc. Even a pack of those little nfc coin things he might be able to put to good use.

Believe me, I was super pissed when word leaked that Asus was making the Nexus tablet. I'm not buying one solely for that reason. However, I do think the N7 should be okay since Google is taking care of the software instead of Asus and oversaw the hardware. Asus is completely incompetent. Google is not.
And as a Prime owner, if apps on the N7 perform similarly as the Prime, I'd suggest throwing it in the garbage. All browsers, Google Earth, tegra games - they're god awful on the Prime. Some of them are literally unusable. With that said, I'm sure apps on the N7 will run great thanks to Google.
Have I mentioned how awful Asus is?

I also use the Atrix + Laprtock as my entire molbile solution. And this includes "real" work which needs substantial typeing and screen real estate.
For me, dropping down to 10 inch would be a killer. I have tried using 10 inch netbooks, and it is a real pain. But maybe the OP can get away with this (younger eyes on a higher res screan, perhaps smaller fingers/hands).
But no way in the world can one work like this on a 7 inch screen.
If one is using the pair for light browsing + media then I cerrtainly see the GN + N7 as a sound choice. But for a working laptop replacement, not for me. Alas I am not certain a padphone works either (though I like the concept). I would certainly be concerned about the phone itself (there are a lot of deatils in this area that do not show up in specs, ask Apple).
A shame the OP just busted his scrreen. I suspect the right answer is to wait several months.

I also use the Atrix + Laprtock as my entire molbile solution. And this includes "real" work which needs substantial typeing and screen real estate.
For me, dropping down to 10 inch would be a killer.
But no way in the world can one work like this on a 7 inch screen.

I had exactly that same question, so I trekked over to the local electronics shop near my home here in Yokohama, and they have an Asus TF201 set up there on wifi. The tablet's dimensions are Padfone sized-- 10 inches. They also had the keydock there too, so I got to test that out as well... Wow. Color me impressed. Remember, the 10" IPS screen has more pixels and a much wider and brighter viewing angle than the Moto OG Lapdock. The keyboard was also easy to type on, and I love the fact that there are actual keys for Home, Back, Volume, Menu, Play/Pause and so on.

So far most responses seem to support the Nexus combo.
I, however, when reading how you use your devices was thinking PadFone all the way. It seems like a better fit for you.
But just my 2 cents.

You're right-- It does seem like a better fit to me too, the more I think of it. Going and actually futzing with the TF201 yesterday didn't help though...

The phone part did pretty well according to Anandtech and Engadget--
Bear in mind that this is supposed to be saving me the cost of getting a netbook to take to work with me everyday as well too... As far as accessories, well I already have 2 bluetooth headsets just sitting on my desk in front of me now, along with a microUSB to USB port adaptor and micro HDMI M/F cables. All this was from me using the Atrix in various situations.
And while the Nexus Duo is a powerful combo, there are 2 things that I absolutely need to have in a device for the way I work-- SD card adaptor and Ethernet Adaptor.
I work in the Media faculty at the university and also teach photojournalism classes; I also freelance a lot too, and one of the things that helps me a lot, is being able to yank my SD card out the camera, snap it into a USB card reader and plug it into the Lapdock and have the Atrix see it, mount it, and access it. I can then do whatever I need to do to the pix while sitting on the train (Did you know the Bullet Trains here all have Wifi onboard, and can be used while in tunnels? I once wrote and uploaded 2 magazine articles, pix and all while on a 3 hour train ride!) The Padfone's keyboard dock has a full sized SDXC card adapter built in...
Also, while my university has wifi almost everywhere on campus, I cannot access the secured parts of the network where we house our common files for grading and such. We can only use the PC labs, office PC pools, or the ethernet ports in the staff rooms. Currently I use a small wifi adapter in bridge mode sometimes-- of course with the SSID not broadcast. But a better solution would be to get a USB Ethernet adaptor. I know the Transformer series has this baked into their kernels-- I think the Padfone can do it too. But I need to do some checking.
Can the Nexus Duo do some/any of these? Let me know how, so I can check off the boxes!
I wouldn't touch an android or ios tablet after the specs of the Microsoft surface the other windows 8 tablet with ivy bridge processors were revealed. Im done with android on anything but my smartphone. Only thing I need to know is the batter life on those beast.

Most reliable laptops?

I need some help shopping for a new windows laptop and I was wondering what brands are currently considered the most reliable these days? I'll be shopping for a 17" in the under $1000 range. Windows 7. If 19" is possible at that price range I will look at that also. My top priority is reliability though. Thanks!

There is no most reliable laptop brands, each brand have many differnt models which are aimed for different users. All of them have pros and cons, some user may have a 5 star experience while others buying the same laptop may receive a unit with defects. With the exception of Apple, I beleive every laptop manufacturer source components from the same group of suppliers. So to find out what is the most reliable laptop model, I would go to amazon, and type "17 inch windows laptop" and browse through the results and reviews.
:good:
Thinkpads (previously made by IBM and now by Lenovo) are historically quite reliable machines. A large percentage of the companies I've worked for have used them.
The Square Trade electronics warranty company release a report every year showing which brands have the least number of malfunction warranty claims, and Asus and Toshiba scored quite well so I'm thinking of getting one of those

I don't think you can get one of those for under $1,000
I've always heard good rap from Lenovo. I'd also check Asus. These are guesses, though. The only thing I can say with certainty is: avoid the temptation of buying cheap Dells. Those things break easier than Ritz crackers. HP sucks, too.
Moved to Off-topic.
Toshiba's are pretty nice...have had mine almost two years and runs like it did the first day still. Updates help but I think it still would be reliable without them.

I 2nd that.
5-6 years ago I got a Toshiba A100 from an insurance claim (previous laptop took a tumble down the stairs).
A year later my ex's cat dropped a bed on it breaking the screen (bed was leaning up against the wall, cat climbed up it and it tilted over onto the dining table where the laptop was).
Claimed on insurance and got a 17" P200 which is still going strong, even the keys have their letters still on them.
The A100 finally died last year, with the broken screen I used it as a media PC plugged into the telly, it ran 24/7 for an entire year on top of a hot satellite TV box which gives you an idea of how durable they are!
One of our clients uses R800s, and they're lovely. The only problem they've had was with them hanging due to a conflict between the docking stations and fingerprint software, but a BIOS update and using the latest drivers fixed that. Some of them have been badly bashed about but they're still going strong.
ASUS!!!!

[Q] Considering the Nexus 7

Hi all, I'm looking for a new tablet and I'm thinking the nexus 7 may be the one. Currently, I only plan to use it for university and not much else, but before buying one I wanted to ask a few questions:
I need to be able to view and edit PowerPoint and Microsoft word files, does the nexus 7 support these capabilities?
Can I use drop box on the nexus to transfer files between devices?
Can I purchase an external keyboard to use, as I will be typing a lot in a short period of time and if so, where could I buy it from?
Is there any other tablet around the price of the nexus I should also consider?
Thanks in advance to anyone that can help, it would be greatly appreciated

- About powerpoint and word files compatibility is not depended on hardware it's on software so check Google Play apps.
(My personal best choice is Kingsoft Office - https://play.google.com/store/apps/...=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNuLndwcy5tb2ZmaWNlX2VuZyJd )
-Yes there is an app for that called Dropbox. https://play.google.com/store/apps/...251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5kcm9wYm94LmFuZHJvaWQiXQ..
-Search eBay ( http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=nexus+7+keyboard&_sop=12 )
-Hundreds of them but the question is can they provide a good quality as Nexus 7 can ? (Speed, specs, build, support )
Thanks heaps hreidmar kingsoft seems to be the app I was looking for, I didn't want to have to get a windows tablet.
As with the last question, I should have phrased it differently, but essentially for my needs: would you recommend a nexus 7 tablet with a keyboard or should I go for something such as a netbook / chrome book (with a budget under $300)?
Also, i currently have the galaxy s4 as a phone, if that matters at all when it comes to choosing, such as getting the galaxy tab instead.

Chromebook or netbook if you are doing school work
Nexus 7's with 3g specs is amazing 4u.
Somehow windows tablet is surely is the best one for office and productivity.
Latest acer w3 with windows 8 os and 8 inch display is recomended to give a try.

Is there any specific reasons as to why a netbook or chromebook would be better? As far as I can tell, it's the same except the tablet does not come with a permanent keyboard (I'll get a blue tooth one).
I've never really enjoyed the experience of windows 8, so if i do go with that OS I'll probably stick to windows 7 or earlier

A 10" tablet + keyboard or a proper laptop would be my recommendation.
A 7" screen is just too small if you're doing a lot of typing or graphical work. Netbooks have had their day, most modern tablets are better spec'd, handier and more portable. A laptop will be much more powerful but you lose a bit on the portability side and might have power issues during a long day.

Thanks troute is there any tablet or laptop you'd recommend? I can't really spend anymore than $300 AUD, and the nexus 10 seems to be over $400.

No idea m8 sorry, I don't know what is available in Aus or what the prices are. One option would be to save up for a bit longer though, A$300 = about £184 which isn't much when buying technology over here.
Remember too that if you do buy a tablet the case and keyboard will be extra.

I'm from Australia! I'd recommend waiting for the next Nexus 7. It should be around $300 for the 32GB version. Trust me, you want alot of storage.

For productivity I would stick with a windows machine.
The N7 is great but it's a toy compared to a PC. I use kingsoft and it is the best on android but it is no excel. If you are going to build complex spreadsheets it will restrict you. It's more designed to view and edit documents rather than build them.
Also android has no native support for proxy over wifi so if your uni uses a proxy you won't be able connect to their network without rooting.
In my opinion an entry level laptop is a better choice for study.
dont be a fool. the new nexus 7 is just around the corner
Got a nexus 7 (an Aussie like you) and while it's good for slides and all, comes up short if you want to do much else besides really really basic notes. I would probably save a few hundred more and get an entry level ultra book or something like that. It'll be much more useful in the long term. Trust me on this one.

If you want a leisure computer with top notch productivity and the ability to run some work programs then you should stick with Windows 8. Why not try Acer's new 8 inch model coming out.
If you want a leisure computer that is a peripheral to a real work machine (a desktop or laptop) that you might just do a little document editing on then the Nexus 7 is the better choice.
Weigh how much you're going to rely on the device for getting things done.

yeah kingsoft did seem quite slow when I tried it on my phone :/ no idea what my university uses, but others use iPads just fine there. Also not looking to do anything complex really, just be able to write down notes quickly during lectures and the ability to write notes on power points (like on a windows computer)

Kingsoft although the most full featured free office app on android it is also the most laggy.
If your getting 300 get it as a gift card for a local or online store so you can contribute your own money towards a win8 machine.
Android is not a desktop or laptop replacement. As said before it compliments one well but I can't imagine using a mobile OS for my main computer through uni. Would have driven me nuts!
Even for not taking I believe paper is better as you have the freedom to combine words with diagrams and formula much easier.
Tablets work better in a corporate environment for emails and reviewing documents. When studying I think this technology can get in the way of learning and becomes a distraction.
My opinion obviously YMMV

Thanks heaps for that input ozzy unfortunately as I have just started uni, saving up an extra $200-300 may be quite difficult, especially since my trimester just ended so I'll need to buy more books soon. I will try and look around for a small netbook or cheap laptop that runs windows, hopefully I can come by one. If not, i can always attach a keyboard to my galaxy haha

I agree that if you're going to be writing papers and such, a laptop is the only way to go. You can probably get a cheap one for around $300 if you keep an eye out for sales.

I'll be writing papers on my main PC at home, I'm just looking for something to write down notes and things while I'm at uni, so I don't get mixed up between physical notes and virtual notes, like to keep everything on one platform for convenience really

I see. In that case a pen and notebook is probably the best thing for taking notes, but maybe I'm just old because that's how I did it when I was in University
