Hi all, I'm looking for a new tablet and I'm thinking the nexus 7 may be the one. Currently, I only plan to use it for university and not much else, but before buying one I wanted to ask a few questions:
I need to be able to view and edit PowerPoint and Microsoft word files, does the nexus 7 support these capabilities?
Can I use drop box on the nexus to transfer files between devices?
Can I purchase an external keyboard to use, as I will be typing a lot in a short period of time and if so, where could I buy it from?
Is there any other tablet around the price of the nexus I should also consider?
Thanks in advance to anyone that can help, it would be greatly appreciated

- About powerpoint and word files compatibility is not depended on hardware it's on software so check Google Play apps.
(My personal best choice is Kingsoft Office - https://play.google.com/store/apps/...=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNuLndwcy5tb2ZmaWNlX2VuZyJd )
-Yes there is an app for that called Dropbox. https://play.google.com/store/apps/...251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5kcm9wYm94LmFuZHJvaWQiXQ..
-Search eBay ( http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=nexus+7+keyboard&_sop=12 )
-Hundreds of them but the question is can they provide a good quality as Nexus 7 can ? (Speed, specs, build, support )
Thanks heaps hreidmar kingsoft seems to be the app I was looking for, I didn't want to have to get a windows tablet.
As with the last question, I should have phrased it differently, but essentially for my needs: would you recommend a nexus 7 tablet with a keyboard or should I go for something such as a netbook / chrome book (with a budget under $300)?
Also, i currently have the galaxy s4 as a phone, if that matters at all when it comes to choosing, such as getting the galaxy tab instead.

Chromebook or netbook if you are doing school work
Nexus 7's with 3g specs is amazing 4u.
Somehow windows tablet is surely is the best one for office and productivity.
Latest acer w3 with windows 8 os and 8 inch display is recomended to give a try.

Is there any specific reasons as to why a netbook or chromebook would be better? As far as I can tell, it's the same except the tablet does not come with a permanent keyboard (I'll get a blue tooth one).
I've never really enjoyed the experience of windows 8, so if i do go with that OS I'll probably stick to windows 7 or earlier

A 10" tablet + keyboard or a proper laptop would be my recommendation.
A 7" screen is just too small if you're doing a lot of typing or graphical work. Netbooks have had their day, most modern tablets are better spec'd, handier and more portable. A laptop will be much more powerful but you lose a bit on the portability side and might have power issues during a long day.

Thanks troute is there any tablet or laptop you'd recommend? I can't really spend anymore than $300 AUD, and the nexus 10 seems to be over $400.

No idea m8 sorry, I don't know what is available in Aus or what the prices are. One option would be to save up for a bit longer though, A$300 = about £184 which isn't much when buying technology over here.
Remember too that if you do buy a tablet the case and keyboard will be extra.

For productivity I would stick with a windows machine.
The N7 is great but it's a toy compared to a PC. I use kingsoft and it is the best on android but it is no excel. If you are going to build complex spreadsheets it will restrict you. It's more designed to view and edit documents rather than build them.
Also android has no native support for proxy over wifi so if your uni uses a proxy you won't be able connect to their network without rooting.
In my opinion an entry level laptop is a better choice for study.
dont be a fool. the new nexus 7 is just around the corner
Got a nexus 7 (an Aussie like you) and while it's good for slides and all, comes up short if you want to do much else besides really really basic notes. I would probably save a few hundred more and get an entry level ultra book or something like that. It'll be much more useful in the long term. Trust me on this one.

If you want a leisure computer with top notch productivity and the ability to run some work programs then you should stick with Windows 8. Why not try Acer's new 8 inch model coming out.
If you want a leisure computer that is a peripheral to a real work machine (a desktop or laptop) that you might just do a little document editing on then the Nexus 7 is the better choice.
Weigh how much you're going to rely on the device for getting things done.

yeah kingsoft did seem quite slow when I tried it on my phone :/ no idea what my university uses, but others use iPads just fine there. Also not looking to do anything complex really, just be able to write down notes quickly during lectures and the ability to write notes on power points (like on a windows computer)

Kingsoft although the most full featured free office app on android it is also the most laggy.
If your getting 300 get it as a gift card for a local or online store so you can contribute your own money towards a win8 machine.
Android is not a desktop or laptop replacement. As said before it compliments one well but I can't imagine using a mobile OS for my main computer through uni. Would have driven me nuts!
Even for not taking I believe paper is better as you have the freedom to combine words with diagrams and formula much easier.
Tablets work better in a corporate environment for emails and reviewing documents. When studying I think this technology can get in the way of learning and becomes a distraction.
My opinion obviously YMMV

Thanks heaps for that input ozzy unfortunately as I have just started uni, saving up an extra $200-300 may be quite difficult, especially since my trimester just ended so I'll need to buy more books soon. I will try and look around for a small netbook or cheap laptop that runs windows, hopefully I can come by one. If not, i can always attach a keyboard to my galaxy haha

I like tablets, they are beautiful, thin, light, their screens are great, people watch you with envy when you use one in a public place, etc. But I still didn´t buy one, just because I couldn´t find a place for them in my daily life. On the go I use my smartphone, and at home I use my laptop. They are not comfortable/powerful enough to substitute my laptop, and they are not light/portable enough to substitute my smartphone.
To tablet-owners: Do you find them useful or not?
If yes, in which situations?
I believe they are both!
I'd rather a smartphone than a tablet.
If I actually spent a week trying to use one as a daily driver I'd know, but from what I've read and heard, it's a expensive toy.
$1 gets you a reply
Its both imo. But if I bought one, it would be as a toy
I use it for to view school papers all the time. With the highlight feature of Repligo Reader it makes it even better. oh and I have the $149 touchpad so it's actually really cheap.
16gb touchpad here. Paid 100. I love it. It's mainly a toy but I definitely could see more use of it than just a novelty.

Well to me, I don't see the reason to buy a tablet as long as I have a smartphone even if it's a low-end one. Big screen doesn't mean anything to me!
I just got the Transformer Prime myself. It's a nice addition, but not necessary in the least bit. Kinda cool playing with ICS on it though.

I'd say it ultimately depends on the phone you have and the tablet you get.
For example, if you've got a Samsung Note and then you get a 7" Galaxy Tab it may seem a little pointless, but if you've got something with a 3" screen that's only really good for calls, texts and basic email and browsing then a tablet would seem like a godsend.
I've got a Galaxy S2 and a 7" Galaxy Tab and it's a good combination. I use the phone heavily throughout the day for all sorts of communication stuff, but then put it down at home and use the tablet instead, which is obviously better for things like browsing and typing etc..
I use mine as a substitute for my laptop at work sometimes. I mostly edit Google docs and use a note pad app. Although, at my job even my laptop isn't a good substitute either. My boss uses LimoSys for the Limo reservations and that program SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKSSSS!!!!!!! Sigh.
But in general I love my GTab 10.1

Honestly the current state of tablets and the OS they are more of an expensive toy. My main use for them had come in the form of a digital REAL BOOK and digital music stand. It saves lugging around all my music to gigs. If wasn't for this use though the tablet OS isn't very useful yet to replace my laptop yet if all I am able to use it for is a glorified e-reader.
tablet for me is more of laptop replacement because of its big screen size. and it always make me laugh to see someone using galaxy tab 7 as a phone
They are useful, but I would only buy one if you're not a gamer. Cause they do make great laptop replacements, but gaming is limited. I got one for christmas (which was an awesome gift btw), but I hardly ever use it. I always find myself running back to my laptop because im a gamer, but other than that it does all my other day to day tasks effortlessly. So I say only get it if you really don't need your laptop.
for the most part it's a toy, but ive gotten more and more productivity apps on it now to the point it is very close to a contender as a a laptop replacement
Toy... be honest how many times have you forced yourself to use a tablet or phone when a computer was right near you just because you want it to have a point.

I'm not always near a computer, so it's most definitely not a toy. It's the closest thing to a netbook that you can get, but most people would use a desktop PC over a netbook. Doesn't make that a toy though.
Besides, I've never dragged my PC into the bathroom just because I'm going to "sit down" for a while.
They have their ups and downs. I personally don't need one because I have a nice laptop and a decent phone. There is nothing that a tablet can offer me at this point.

Lol, maybe you should try it... I can't say I have either but I also don't bring a tablet into the bathroom, its not like I need google navigation to get back to the living room ;P I personally have the 64GB ipad2 please don't rage at me for buying an apple tablet, its already enough of a pain to use it sometimes, I definitely prefer Android. But the stuff that I use it for like email and internet/YouTube I could just do on my phone, its not really worth dragging around a tablet for. I already drag around my laptop so i'd rather just use that.

In my entire phone history, I have only ever owned and used 2 Android devices - the HTC Desire (with its awful amount of storage) and now the Samsung Galaxy Note. My Note is a fantastic behemoth of a phone, and perhaps even a tablet, but the Nexus 7 still appeals to me. As I like to not waste battery life of my phone, I'm not in a position to always use it heavily as I may need it to last the rest of the day rather than have it burn out after five hours of film watching in the morning. A tablet sounds appealing since I feel I no longer need a laptop besides for the occasional piece of homework where I shall need a keyboard and spend the majority of my time just on Facebook, the XDA forums, Blogger, YouTube and other basic web services. So, do you think the Nexus 7 is any good for me?
I think so, the only concern you should have is whether the small screen size jump justifies a new device. If you are fine with owning a 5in and 7in device, this seems like a nice product to do all your browsing on so you are not sucking the phone dry.
The screen jump size is pretty minimal and, in my mind, I find it hard to justify. Whilst I don't take my phone to school, however, I do like for it to last the day and giving it the intense usage of a tablet it just won't manage that. I brought the Note to purposely save the cost of a tablet also, yet this Nexus 7 seems an absolute bargain with pretty good specification. Plus, I suspect it'll have some great support and the idea of a pure Google experience interests me.
Also, is it possible to have multiple user profiles through different Google accounts on Android? As my family and I may split the costs, yet we wouldn't want each other accessing our Google accounts.
Do you think the extra 8GB to 16GB is worth the extra £41 GBP or so?
Just wait till the end of July, hold it in your hands and decide for yourself and live with no regrets.

I'd love for Google to implement this themselves on tablet versions of Jelly Bean, as in my opinion tablets are a device used by more than one person unlike a phone. Yet, if I were to buy a tablet, I'd feel uncomfortable letting my family use it cause I don't want them accessing my YouTube, Gmail and all my accounts that are tied to the tab.
Do people here think it is worth it or not?

Okay. Still can't decide whether to buy this or not. I could just install Paranoid Android, which will allow me to run apps in tablet or phone mode, onto my Note and then there would be just 2 inches screen difference. Yet, a pure Google experience without the risk of flashing and the latest Android version all seems really appealing to me. I suppose it'll take me a while to safe up the cash anyway, which will give me time to think.
I think the size difference is too small to be worth it. Plus the 8-16 GB limitation. You already have a device that can pretty much double up as a tablet for all the things you posted about. Just get an extra battery (and/or the 5400 mah one) and you'll be good to go.

This is probably a good call. It's a shame iPad's are rip offs though.
Almost everyone here will tell you to get a Nexus, I mean, you're in the Nexus 7 forums. Most of us think the device is pretty awesome and pretty much the best bang for your buck.
As to using a USB expandable storage AND a keyboard simultaneously. I know that some USB keyboards have additional USB slots in the sides or backs of them. That *might* work to use both, not sure, but most certainly you can use a keyboard, and if you root the device you can use a USB stick.
You also have the option of getting yourself a Bluetooth keyboard (can get them off ebay for $35 I think) and but the USB stick right in the device.
But uh, yeah you better find out the iOS app only dealeo that Synth mentioned.
It's too bad there's not an iOS emulator on Android

nexus 7 will be perfect for you. its looks much more professional to hold a 7in tablet in your hand than a 10in. getting a 10in tab alongside your laptop seems unnecessary. i think of it in tiers. mobile - 7in tab - laptop - desktop. if you were looking to replace your laptop then i would recommend a 10in (a transformer, in fact), but since you're not the Nexus 7 is exactly what you want, esp for your low price range

I might be able to offer some insight about the usefulness of tablets in medical school as i recently just graduated medical school. If you want to use this tablet for note taking i would say it's a bad idea. A 7"screen is just too small for editing documents. You should look into getting a 10" tablet for that.
And yes you will have to have a physical keyboard. You just won't be able to type fast enough to keep up with a software keyboard. Lecturers pump out a ton of information at a fast rate. To be honest it's probably easier just to use a laptop which is what i and most other people did. You can type, edit, record much more conveniently.
As for medical apps. All the major programs that you find on iOS you will also find on the Android market. And usually for free. No reason to go the iPad route unless your school has some specific app that requires it.
In the end the tablet is a fun toy and it can be a useful study aid. But it doesn't come close to replacing a laptop when it comes to note taking.

Hey XDA community, I've been coming and going alot lately but I got tons of headaches off this so i thought let's see what you guys think,
I was offered a free ipad 3 from my brother, against getting a N7 from my out pocket, I has an ipod 4g and HTC explorer, so am not a fan or a
hater for any of those platforms actually I love them both equally plus, they are almost identical when it comes to apps availabilty, I know the ipad
might have a slight edge in frames in that area, now onto the most important part, I'll use it mainly for ebooks reading as am studying Comp.
Science and am a gamer web browsing .. ofc ! ( again no hate for the 7-in screen ) and please don't point to the "issues massacre" that's going on
about the N7 althought RMA is not an option for me if anything wrong goes on ...
long post, sry
What's with the crazy font and centering? Makes your post difficult to read.
Get the nexus 7. Compared to the iPad, n7 is just more convenient to hold and type in terms of weight and size and more portable. The size is good enough for reading also at least for me.

Can you get both?
If in your position I would probably try and decide which size device would suit me better.... The bigger iPad is less portable and harder to use as a regular e-reader, but might be better for browsing and textbooks with diagrams and pictures.. The Nexus is more portable and a great all rounder (I am doing an IT degree and have no problems reading my textbooks.
I personally detest Apple's business practices and would never buy one of their devices, but their products are solid and you probably can't go wrong either way.

lol thought about it but I thought of an X360 right away :silly:
you've got a good point, reading text about source code might get ugly on the N7 while going back and forth ...
about the "solid" thing, I've done a jailbreak on one of these babies, and the thing got re-springing every once and a while, while the N7 actually begs you to customize it lol
I've got a tickle though .. are you experiencing any lifting or anything ? since u've got an N7

I agree as far as the size goes. I have both sizes, and I'm loving the 7" form factor. So much easier to handle when lounging around, and still big enough for my uses.

Yeah, take the free ipad3. Though, I love my nexus 7. If it was free nexus versus ipad3 the nexus has now closed the gap I'd easily say take the free nexus and you'd be happy.

That's not a biased response at all.
@OP- I own both, and both are great devices in their own regard. The screen on the iPad is unparalleled, it has a ton of awesome games, and a bunch of great productivity apps. The Nexus 7 has the customizability, and a great form factor, plus all of Google's great cloud services. I take my N7 with me, and use the iPad at home. I think the 7" is a much better size for portability, and it's the perfect size for gaming, but unfortunately the iPad just trumps Android with the shear number of high quality games available. The N7 is also a better size for reading too. If it comes down to getting an iPad 3 for free or actually buying the N7, then I would take the iPad no question. If you were going to have to spring for either, then it would be a toss up and I would lean towards the N7. If I was in your shoes though, I would take the free iPad and buy an N7
Screw it.. am getting this freebie, then I'll re-think about this whole thing WHY THE HELL SHOULD I SAY NO TO A FREE IPAD !!
Thanks all for you're hot replies

Good choice. Then you can sell it and buy 3 Nexus 7's with the money. Keep one in your car, one at home, and one at work!

Take the free ipad, sell it, buy a brand new nexus7, and use the remaining on accessories, apps, and a nice dinner.

If you need GPS then the iPad3 is useless if it's the WIFI only version since it doesn't have GPS. Take the free iPad3, sell it and buy two Nexus 7's.
I know for me personally, the ipad is too big. I like the 7 inch form factor, and the nexus 7 is designed to for portability and convenience. Just depends what your looking for I suppose. Honestly I'm not sure why anyone needs a bigger tablet but that's just me.

Ironically I sold my iPad 3 earlier today.
Initially I bought the Nexus 7 in addition to the iPad but since owning it I just haven't put it down. Yes the iPad has more polished apps but the sheer power, flexibility and portability of the N7 can't be beaten. I found I simply couldn't justify keeping the iPad!

Hi guys I was wondering if this tablet in the 10.5 version paired with the logtech type S, was a choice for University, I need something light to be very helpful, powerful.
Plus I would add an annual plan of 200€/yrs for 20gb of data in 4g speed
Do u think its a good choice or not, my budget is around 4.0/450 for the tablet only
I would definitely recommend it but a MacBook Air at 999 dollars would be a better option though. The tab s has the best screen right now in the market for tablets and laptops. Samsung's built in file manager app my files is also very useful for organizing stuff in your tablet. Battery life is excellent and will certainly last you one whole day o heavy use.
Don't do it, I tried to use my Asus Transformer to take notes and stuff a few years ago when I was in college and it was just a headache because no matter how nice Google Docs is, it just doesn't compare to Word. I just kept getting frustrated/sidetracked and would end up playing games or browsing websites lol Android also doesn't function like a desktop/laptop OS so when you try to use it as one it just adds to the frustration. Granted the Tab S and Logitech keyboard (I have those also) are newer than the TF101 (actually liked that setup better TBH) but it was running Honeycomb so that had something to do with it.
Even though I love everything to be digital, after my 7 years in college I still found that the good ol' pen and paper was the best route. If you want to digitize your notes get a smart pen that does OCR and can upload your documents to your PC or get a Moleskine notebook that works with Evernote.
Yes a tablet is not as good as a laptop. Hardware, software and ergonomics so much better on a laptop like macbook pro or air. For simple notes it's fine or audio, video recording for transcription.
I had Asus transformer with Android os and the keypad and it drove me nuts.

I'm actually on the other side of this fence, I'm a university student and I use my tablet (galaxy tab S 8.4) for notes with a Jot pro+ and an app called Papyrus, using a keyboard for classes where there isn't a lot of fancy script. Seeing as I'm currently running through calculus, chemistry, and physics though hand writing my notes works best, and Papyrus can write up PDF's nicer than anything else I've tried.
If you like notes from scratch, google docs does indeed work excellent, and Hancom office works even better (which comes with the tablet) and can sync with google drive anyway.
I've also gone through a year using my ipad mini for notes which also worked great since I had a zagg keyboard case for it and it was essentially a mini laptop, sold it because I sold my laptop and wanted something bigger... ended up with something the same size. IF you do prefer hand written notes: Buy an ipad and a jot pro script (the fancy $75 version with palm rejection). My answer is a non-conductive glove and a standard stylus.
Or, but a galaxy note 8, NOT the note 10, I used that one for a semester for notes too and couldn't take it, the screen is way too low res however with Papyrus it might work out a lot better than it did before because S note sucks.
That said, if you prefer typed notes, a laptop is probably your best bet, but tablets are generally longer lived as far as battery goes, and usually cheaper, while being similarly capable for text notes.
