Tab S for University studies - Galaxy Tab S General

Hi guys I was wondering if this tablet in the 10.5 version paired with the logtech type S, was a choice for University, I need something light to be very helpful, powerful.
Plus I would add an annual plan of 200€/yrs for 20gb of data in 4g speed
Do u think its a good choice or not, my budget is around 4.0/450 for the tablet only

I would definitely recommend it but a MacBook Air at 999 dollars would be a better option though. The tab s has the best screen right now in the market for tablets and laptops. Samsung's built in file manager app my files is also very useful for organizing stuff in your tablet. Battery life is excellent and will certainly last you one whole day o heavy use.

Don't do it, I tried to use my Asus Transformer to take notes and stuff a few years ago when I was in college and it was just a headache because no matter how nice Google Docs is, it just doesn't compare to Word. I just kept getting frustrated/sidetracked and would end up playing games or browsing websites lol Android also doesn't function like a desktop/laptop OS so when you try to use it as one it just adds to the frustration. Granted the Tab S and Logitech keyboard (I have those also) are newer than the TF101 (actually liked that setup better TBH) but it was running Honeycomb so that had something to do with it.
Even though I love everything to be digital, after my 7 years in college I still found that the good ol' pen and paper was the best route. If you want to digitize your notes get a smart pen that does OCR and can upload your documents to your PC or get a Moleskine notebook that works with Evernote.

Yes a tablet is not as good as a laptop. Hardware, software and ergonomics so much better on a laptop like macbook pro or air. For simple notes it's fine or audio, video recording for transcription.
I had Asus transformer with Android os and the keypad and it drove me nuts.

I'm actually on the other side of this fence, I'm a university student and I use my tablet (galaxy tab S 8.4) for notes with a Jot pro+ and an app called Papyrus, using a keyboard for classes where there isn't a lot of fancy script. Seeing as I'm currently running through calculus, chemistry, and physics though hand writing my notes works best, and Papyrus can write up PDF's nicer than anything else I've tried.
If you like notes from scratch, google docs does indeed work excellent, and Hancom office works even better (which comes with the tablet) and can sync with google drive anyway.
I've also gone through a year using my ipad mini for notes which also worked great since I had a zagg keyboard case for it and it was essentially a mini laptop, sold it because I sold my laptop and wanted something bigger... ended up with something the same size. IF you do prefer hand written notes: Buy an ipad and a jot pro script (the fancy $75 version with palm rejection). My answer is a non-conductive glove and a standard stylus.
Or, but a galaxy note 8, NOT the note 10, I used that one for a semester for notes too and couldn't take it, the screen is way too low res however with Papyrus it might work out a lot better than it did before because S note sucks.
That said, if you prefer typed notes, a laptop is probably your best bet, but tablets are generally longer lived as far as battery goes, and usually cheaper, while being similarly capable for text notes.

TABLETS: Useful gadgets or expensive toys?

I like tablets, they are beautiful, thin, light, their screens are great, people watch you with envy when you use one in a public place, etc. But I still didn´t buy one, just because I couldn´t find a place for them in my daily life. On the go I use my smartphone, and at home I use my laptop. They are not comfortable/powerful enough to substitute my laptop, and they are not light/portable enough to substitute my smartphone.
To tablet-owners: Do you find them useful or not?
If yes, in which situations?
I believe they are both!
I'd rather a smartphone than a tablet.
If I actually spent a week trying to use one as a daily driver I'd know, but from what I've read and heard, it's a expensive toy.
$1 gets you a reply
Its both imo. But if I bought one, it would be as a toy
I use it for to view school papers all the time. With the highlight feature of Repligo Reader it makes it even better. oh and I have the $149 touchpad so it's actually really cheap.
16gb touchpad here. Paid 100. I love it. It's mainly a toy but I definitely could see more use of it than just a novelty.

Well to me, I don't see the reason to buy a tablet as long as I have a smartphone even if it's a low-end one. Big screen doesn't mean anything to me!
I just got the Transformer Prime myself. It's a nice addition, but not necessary in the least bit. Kinda cool playing with ICS on it though.

I'd say it ultimately depends on the phone you have and the tablet you get.
For example, if you've got a Samsung Note and then you get a 7" Galaxy Tab it may seem a little pointless, but if you've got something with a 3" screen that's only really good for calls, texts and basic email and browsing then a tablet would seem like a godsend.
I've got a Galaxy S2 and a 7" Galaxy Tab and it's a good combination. I use the phone heavily throughout the day for all sorts of communication stuff, but then put it down at home and use the tablet instead, which is obviously better for things like browsing and typing etc..
I use mine as a substitute for my laptop at work sometimes. I mostly edit Google docs and use a note pad app. Although, at my job even my laptop isn't a good substitute either. My boss uses LimoSys for the Limo reservations and that program SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKSSSS!!!!!!! Sigh.
But in general I love my GTab 10.1

Honestly the current state of tablets and the OS they are more of an expensive toy. My main use for them had come in the form of a digital REAL BOOK and digital music stand. It saves lugging around all my music to gigs. If wasn't for this use though the tablet OS isn't very useful yet to replace my laptop yet if all I am able to use it for is a glorified e-reader.
tablet for me is more of laptop replacement because of its big screen size. and it always make me laugh to see someone using galaxy tab 7 as a phone
They are useful, but I would only buy one if you're not a gamer. Cause they do make great laptop replacements, but gaming is limited. I got one for christmas (which was an awesome gift btw), but I hardly ever use it. I always find myself running back to my laptop because im a gamer, but other than that it does all my other day to day tasks effortlessly. So I say only get it if you really don't need your laptop.
for the most part it's a toy, but ive gotten more and more productivity apps on it now to the point it is very close to a contender as a a laptop replacement
Toy... be honest how many times have you forced yourself to use a tablet or phone when a computer was right near you just because you want it to have a point.

I use mine on weekends to keep the 3 year old entertained while we get in an extra 30 minutes sleep. So to me I say its a highly useful tool.

I'm not always near a computer, so it's most definitely not a toy. It's the closest thing to a netbook that you can get, but most people would use a desktop PC over a netbook. Doesn't make that a toy though.
Besides, I've never dragged my PC into the bathroom just because I'm going to "sit down" for a while.
They have their ups and downs. I personally don't need one because I have a nice laptop and a decent phone. There is nothing that a tablet can offer me at this point.
Sent from my Synergized-Shift using xda premium
Lol, maybe you should try it... I can't say I have either but I also don't bring a tablet into the bathroom, its not like I need google navigation to get back to the living room ;P I personally have the 64GB ipad2 please don't rage at me for buying an apple tablet, its already enough of a pain to use it sometimes, I definitely prefer Android. But the stuff that I use it for like email and internet/YouTube I could just do on my phone, its not really worth dragging around a tablet for. I already drag around my laptop so i'd rather just use that.

Thinking of getting the N7 as a main device and netbook replacement, anyone else?

I was thinking of purchasing the N7 to replace my netbook and be my only device (outside of my iPhone).
The only things I ever do on my netbook (my main computer) is surf the web, play emulators, watch netflix, and write papers on microsoft word for college.
I figure that with a bluetooth keyboard and a stand I could type my papers. I also thought that with a bluetooth wiimote + classic controller and GBA.emu I could play games to my hearts content. Lastly I hope that I could use an MHL adapter to play the emulators and Netflix on my big screen.
Anyone have thoughts on this or is going to do this as well? Am I nuts? Any problems you see me running into?
I don't see why you couldn't do any of those things other than using MHL which hasn't been confirmed yet (but, if it's not available, may be able to be hacked into working apparently). I know for a fact that as soon as I get my Nexus 7 I'll probably be using my laptop a lot less.
I would never replace a tablet with a laptop/netbook, I'd just use it to accommodate it.
I have a Chrome book 5 series by Samsung and it's SUPER nice for school. Battery life great and for school work its even better.
I'm buying this tab to help keep in touch with the cloud and also for my books. It's great for books if you're in college and for games. Not so much typing up stuff.
If you want the best of both worlds, I suggest buying a Chrome book from craigslist or something for 200-ish and this tab for another 200. Together, for 400 bucks, you're set for school till you graduate! And think about it, that's still cheaper than just an iPad... or half decent laptop.

actually, i'm considering getting this for my dad for exactly this reason. all he ever does with his first generation windows 7 netbook is use Openoffice, gotomyPC (for work stuff), google drive, and google chrome. he's really wanted something more portable than his netbook and he loves his DX2, so i think that would be perfect for him.
This is going to replace my iPad 2 as my "always on me" ereader/tablet. The iPad is too big and heavy for long reading sessions, and frankly I want to be rid of my last i-device. This was just too good an opportunity to pass up.
That's what I did. About a week ago I sold my year old macbook air 13" for $1000 on craigslist and bought a samsung galaxy tab 2 7". Been loving it ever since! Now I've found out about the nexus 7 and I pre ordered the 16 gb model. I'm trying an experiment in our family with not having our own laptops and just using a tablet (wife's idea). Setting my wife set up the same way. We have 1 pc laptop that we'll share and use our tablets as our personal device. So far, it's been working out great for us. Seriously can't wait for the nexus 7 to arrive!
I already use my nook in lieu of a laptop -- my aging Core 2 Quad handles all the heavy lifting i need it to.
Try typing anything serious on a netbook. Even with my Transformer Prime, it's not fun to do, plus the major office suites (including several paid for versions I've tried) are really watered down. If you're planning on writing anything serious with it, adding graphics, etc, I'd seriously suggest keeping a laptop around for that at least, even if it's an old and/or basic one.
Especially since most tablet apps on Android are just stretched phone apps.
Currently, I use my Cr48 for all light tasks and it goes with me anywhere. Although it has been a stellar device and I do enjoy ChromeOS, its a bit underpowered for some multimedia tasks (i.e. watching Netflix). As my aging "OG" Evo phone also suffers from an even more apparent lack of power, my purchase of the N7 is more to replace the midsize "netbook-tier" device than anything else. I think it'll fit there perfectly.
My ThinkPad will remain the go-to "main device" for any heavy lifting tasks but, as the W520 is anything but portable, I need a more lightweight option!

Almost
My Nexus 7 almost replaces my laptop. I was going to replace my Dell Inspiron 1525 with a netbook or a tablet. Since I am no longer on the road traveling, all I need is a living room device. My Nexus 7 works well for what it does. I love Google Now. It works well for looking up things my wife and I are discussing. The Chrome web browser works well but not good enough for bill paying and banking. Also printing does not work well with the older printer I have. I have a very nice Windows 7 desktop for anything serious. The Nexus 7 is a wonderful device as an edition to a digital household, but not a complete notebook replacement. I can say that I now read more books and the GPS is awesome.
2 days after I got my n7, my laptop passed away.
Can't say I've missed it much.
In some cases tho, it would be faster. For instance it's way faster ctrl+clicking a bunch of links compared to long-press+tap.
My tablet has become my main device. Of course I've been using a chromebook for the for quite a while as my main computer. Still needed for some Web work, but for the most part my new n7 will be my main device.

Or wait till they get wifi sync setup.

Ever since my Nexus arrived, i've severely neglected my laptop. Now, it just feels so damn heavy after just throwing my Nexus into my bag and being on my way for the past few weeks.
Safe to say, my Nexus7 has become my main device as well.

Is the N7 for me?

Hey N7 forum,
I'm currently stuck between selling my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300 + Keyboard Dock for the Nexus 7.
I'm planning on getting the Nexus 4 Smartphone, which will arrive next week. My question is, should I sell my TF300+Dock for the N7, if I have the N4 (4.7in Screen).
It's quite complicated.
My dislikes of the tablet I currently have:
- Too much like a laptop (but also something I like): During bus rides, I'd love to take out my tablet. One word: too hard. But at coffee shops, it's perfect
- Heavy, and a tad too big
- Slow I/O Hampers the tab's performance (Chrome, Installing/Updating Apps, Music can be a bit slow)
Likes:
- The Keyboard Dock, awesome for blogging and essay writing (I don't have a laptop)
- It's nice
So if someone could give me some insight, it'd be great!
Thanks~
Used to to have a tf201. Sold it to a friend for the same reasons basically, the keyboard was handy but added bulk to the tablet and found myself using it more like a laptop than a tablet.
The thing about the Nexus 7 for factor is that using an in screen keyboard is a lot more viable than on a larger 10 inch tablet. It's just too hard to hold a 10 inch tablet while entering text on a soft keyboard, and obviously the dock is useless for this as well. With the Nexus 7 I use Swift Key 3 in portrait mode and just type with my thumbs and it's very fast as far as soft keyboards go. Granted as a touch typist its still slower than a keyboard but I for one am happy to make the sacrifice in return for the superior portability of the Nexus 7.

Tricky one.
The Nexus 7 is not a laptop replacement. Its not as easy or quick to type on and not as powerful, with a lot less "useful" things you can do with it.
However, add a USB (via OTG, I've heard they work, but I guess you may have power issues) or Bluetooth keyboard and you have a pretty useful piece of kits. Its very portable and can fit in a coat pocket. However, with a case around it, its a bit harder to fit in a pocket. With my Roo Case, I cant fit it in my pocket any longer for example.
Being the size of an average book though, its more than practical for taking out in a bus though. I looked at both and went for the Nexus on cost and functionality. I have a stack of apps for the Nexus and I'm amazed by how useful its becoming. I've set up Cloud Print for instance so it prints out anything to my printer and with Evernote, it saves anything I am browsing and interested in, or with Quill, i can take handwritten notes (which are thus far illegible - I need a better pen device).
Would you take around the Nexus just for the more powerful machine and slightly larger screen? With me, its a no brainer, as my phone is an Xperia Ray and that's got a tiny screen. I wanted a Kindle style tablet that I could carry around and read etc. Would you make use of the 3G for instance? If so, thats another bonus for the Nexus.
Maybe use the Nexus 4 for a couple of weeks and see what the combination of that and the transformer feels like. The nexus 7 isnt going anywhere and as experience has shown, waiting will if anything make it cheaper and better.
How about getting a chromebook as laptop. should be able to write essays and stuff. I dont think you need a N7 if you get a N4, except you want a 7inch tablet.
I myself use the iPad of my father occasionally and it is far too big and far too heavy. its almost a pain in the ass writing and/or surfing on it while lying on the couch because it is too big/heavy. Thats why I choose the nexus 7, because it is light and smaller, imho perfect size.
make a pro/con list and think about the chromebook
My 2 cents.
I currently have:
1 Acer Timeline 1830T with 256GB SSD (main work computer) (11.6")
2 Asus Transformer TF101 w/keyboard dock
3 Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0
4 Nexus 7 3g being delivered on Monday
The Timeline is great. Does everything, great form factor.
The Transformer is caught between a tablet and a notebook. It's an awkward tablet and with the keyboard it's not that different in size from my Acer
Galaxy Tab is nice (it was an experiment for me, we had a couple left over from a giveaway at my company so I've been playing with it over the last two months). It really fits a niche for when I travel on business. I have to have my Windows laptop for work but there's lots of times where the Galaxy Tab is easy to pull out and do something (I was stuck on a plane for an hour at the gate last week in ORD when they were de-icing - watched a movie). Only problem with the Sammy is that to get online, I have to whip out my mifi and fire it up. Hence the purchase of the Nexus 3G. If I can get it to tether a data plan, I may even give up my mifi.
Conclusion, if you have a regular computer, I'd get the Nexus 7 (I ordered a minisuit bluetooth keyboard cover for it) for when you are mobile. If you don't have a regular computer and the transformer is filling that niche, I'd think twice (perhaps your Nexus 4 can fill the mobile need) For me, a 7" tablet is an accessory not a mainstay.
You have no reasons to buy N7 if you have N4 and Transformer, exept if you are a gadget freak like most of us
Hey guys! I'm also about to buy this tablet. I like many things about it(extremely cheap, hardware wise etc) but my only concern is the screen size. 7" sounds small compared to, say the iPad. I know N7 is much more handy and it can be carried with you every where you go but it's a tablet after all. Gaming, movies and web browsing? I'm into big screens and I think 4.3" is way too small for a phone, now will I be disappointed with the "small" screen of the N7.
Someone already mentioned in this thread that the small screen is great for typing. That's true I believe... Cheers.
Btw, I'm looking for a device that would replace my laptop, which is broken. I will still have my netbook, but I won't be using it for leisure due to it's crappy performance.
EDIT: I would buy some kind of a BT keyboard if they work since I'd be doing a lot of school work(+ a LOT of IM'ing ) with it...

Well, I've heard different stories... In almost any review I've read, they say it's the best tablet(for its price anyway) out there. Can you justify your statement? :silly:
The TF300 does not need the dock, so you can use without it. I have one too and use mainly without the keyboard. Also have a G3 that is 4.8"and no display space taken up by a nav bar.
The N7 is cramp for viewing space, compared to the TF300. The N7 is a nice tweener device and handier for travel, but IMO, not a practical replacement for the TF300. More like a complimentary device with the TF300.
i had the exact same thing as you, tf300t with dock that i liked, but i had to take a bag if i wanted to take it anywhere
i sold my transformer and got the n7, and i havent looked back once, i though going from 10" to 7" would be a big deal but its not, its easy to hold in one hand and is quick as hell, i couldnt recommend the plunge anymore i LOVE my n7

Nexus 7 vs Note 2

I picked up the 32GB 3G Nexus 7 just a few days ago, I also have a Note II which I've owned for a few months. I was wondering for a long while, is there any point owning the N7 if you already have a Note II? Here are my thoughts...
Gaming
I find the Note II much better for graphically intense games like NFS MW, it runs them all very smooth unlike the N7, especially since my Note II is rooted and both CPU/GPU are overclocked. This isn't really an issue for me as I didn't buy the N7 for gaming, but it has allowed me to free up some space on my Note II since I've installed all my 'less graphically intense' and 'smaller file size' games on to the N7 and deleted them from my Note II. They look nice on the N7's bigger screen.
Browsing
When I'm at home I find myself using the N7 more, the bigger screen on the N7 makes browsing the web better.
E-Books
This was one of the reasons I purchased the N7. The bigger screen makes it easier on the eyes for reading. Can anyone recommend me a good pdf book reader?
TV/Sky
Since my Note II is rooted, Sky Go will not work on it. I haven't and won't be rooting the N7 and Sky Go works! I've got the poetic slimline case, which has a built in stand, perfect for Sky and TVcatchup! :good: I highly recommend the case too, it offer good protection and adds little bulk.
Phone/Messaging
I was surprised to find that my 3G N7 which has a SIM installed, can receive text messages! I installed SMS Pro from the play store and I can now reply to the messages. It's won't be used as a phone but having internet on the go and being able to send and receive texts is a nice feature.
Conclusion
I think there is space for someone to own both devices. As I said, my N7 will be used mainly for TV/Sky and e-books, some light gaming and browsing. Whereas my Note II is used more for gaming and as an actual phone. Now all I need is the Nexus 10
I got both and I agree.
Gaming performance is no comparison, exynos quad completely destroys tegra 3 in pretty much every single game you can think of even tegra optimized titles. overclocked my N7 to 1.5ghz cpu and 520mhz gpu and it still can't keep up.
For web browsing, I do admit I use my N7 more at home because of the bigger display, even though the samsung browser runs as smooth as safari on iOS.
agree about ebooks. adobe reader (+ enable gpu rendering in developer options) if you want the smoothest & fastest experience. Or ezpdf reader if you want features.
I own them both, but I still think that 7" is way to small for a tablet to have the same browsing exp. as on PC, so I use my N7 as a phone, Note 2 just for calls so I plan to sell it
I use my Nexus 7 as a school PDF textbook (all 4 class books are on my note 2) and for Tegra only games. I browse forums in tapatalk and I also use currents from time to time. Other than that I use my Note 2 for everything. If I didn't use the N7 for text books, I could easily get rid of it without any hesitation. I still might, I believe a 8in or 10in tablet would serve my tablet needs better. Nexus 10 or maybe one of the new Samsung tablets coming out.
I also have both and agree with everything except playing games. I only do that on my nexus 7. Just got done playing Temple Run 2 on my Nexus 7. I use my Nexus primarily when traveling so my phone battery does not run down in the airport and on the plane etc. I am interested to see they will be announcing a Note 8 inch tablet at MWC in February. Gotta love the Note 2 and for the price the Nexus 7!
The Nook software is still the most functional ereader simple to do a bookmark and use it does side load books as well. I've tried some of the others and there a hella needless extra button presses required to bookmark or highlight text.
And who the crap is reading pdf books ugh epub is the best format.

For games like Temple Run 2 it's fine, but when you try running games like NFS on both devices side by side, you'll know what I mean.

A lot of academic books come in PDF format, although I go with epub if I can. Ezpdf is a good reader for PDF files.
Cool reader is great for epubs and is true freeware.
Finally mantano reader works superbly for both PDF and epub but it does cost a few bucks.

All I can say is I love the size of my note 2. I haven't purchased a tablet since I sold my touchpad. But the nexus tablets are looking good. Most of the time the tablet will be used by my kids anyway. This way my phone will be less likely to be damaged by little slippery hands. I just want the tablet to be just as good as my phone for gaming and graphics. Hopefully the next Samsung or nexus will be at a low price with great processor and graphics.

I use Aldiko on the N7 for reading both PDFs and epub books. i find it works very well, and I like it much better than Adobe Reader or various other PDF readers I tried, plus I can see all my books and magazines in one place on the Aldiko bookshelf. I like the way the page can be turned just by touching the edge of the screen, and the fact that it remembers where I was reading in every book without having to set a bookmark, though you can set manual bookmarks as well.
The other reason I use Aldiko is that it integrates very well with Calibre running on my PC, both by USB and WiFi. I keep all my ebooks, including PDF, in Calibre. Aldiko can download books over WiFi directly from Calibre's built-in private web server which simulates an online bookstore. It's really quick and easy to use.
I have both and now want to add a nexus 10

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, will go through each one and hopefully find a reader I like.
I got to try my N7 out today as a satnav device as I went on a relatively long trip. Google Navigation worked perfectly, I had data on the SIM so could download maps as I was going. Just need a car mount that will hold this beast.
Oh and as for adding a Nexus 10 to my collection, won't be happening for a long while yet. I've just picked up a second 24" Dell monitor for my desktop, WOW.

[Q] Considering the Nexus 7

Hi all, I'm looking for a new tablet and I'm thinking the nexus 7 may be the one. Currently, I only plan to use it for university and not much else, but before buying one I wanted to ask a few questions:
I need to be able to view and edit PowerPoint and Microsoft word files, does the nexus 7 support these capabilities?
Can I use drop box on the nexus to transfer files between devices?
Can I purchase an external keyboard to use, as I will be typing a lot in a short period of time and if so, where could I buy it from?
Is there any other tablet around the price of the nexus I should also consider?
Thanks in advance to anyone that can help, it would be greatly appreciated

- About powerpoint and word files compatibility is not depended on hardware it's on software so check Google Play apps.
(My personal best choice is Kingsoft Office - https://play.google.com/store/apps/...=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNuLndwcy5tb2ZmaWNlX2VuZyJd )
-Yes there is an app for that called Dropbox. https://play.google.com/store/apps/...251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5kcm9wYm94LmFuZHJvaWQiXQ..
-Search eBay ( http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=nexus+7+keyboard&_sop=12 )
-Hundreds of them but the question is can they provide a good quality as Nexus 7 can ? (Speed, specs, build, support )
Thanks heaps hreidmar kingsoft seems to be the app I was looking for, I didn't want to have to get a windows tablet.
As with the last question, I should have phrased it differently, but essentially for my needs: would you recommend a nexus 7 tablet with a keyboard or should I go for something such as a netbook / chrome book (with a budget under $300)?
Also, i currently have the galaxy s4 as a phone, if that matters at all when it comes to choosing, such as getting the galaxy tab instead.

Chromebook or netbook if you are doing school work
Nexus 7's with 3g specs is amazing 4u.
Somehow windows tablet is surely is the best one for office and productivity.
Latest acer w3 with windows 8 os and 8 inch display is recomended to give a try.

Is there any specific reasons as to why a netbook or chromebook would be better? As far as I can tell, it's the same except the tablet does not come with a permanent keyboard (I'll get a blue tooth one).
I've never really enjoyed the experience of windows 8, so if i do go with that OS I'll probably stick to windows 7 or earlier

A 10" tablet + keyboard or a proper laptop would be my recommendation.
A 7" screen is just too small if you're doing a lot of typing or graphical work. Netbooks have had their day, most modern tablets are better spec'd, handier and more portable. A laptop will be much more powerful but you lose a bit on the portability side and might have power issues during a long day.

Thanks troute is there any tablet or laptop you'd recommend? I can't really spend anymore than $300 AUD, and the nexus 10 seems to be over $400.

No idea m8 sorry, I don't know what is available in Aus or what the prices are. One option would be to save up for a bit longer though, A$300 = about £184 which isn't much when buying technology over here.
Remember too that if you do buy a tablet the case and keyboard will be extra.

I'm from Australia! I'd recommend waiting for the next Nexus 7. It should be around $300 for the 32GB version. Trust me, you want alot of storage.

For productivity I would stick with a windows machine.
The N7 is great but it's a toy compared to a PC. I use kingsoft and it is the best on android but it is no excel. If you are going to build complex spreadsheets it will restrict you. It's more designed to view and edit documents rather than build them.
Also android has no native support for proxy over wifi so if your uni uses a proxy you won't be able connect to their network without rooting.
In my opinion an entry level laptop is a better choice for study.
dont be a fool. the new nexus 7 is just around the corner
Got a nexus 7 (an Aussie like you) and while it's good for slides and all, comes up short if you want to do much else besides really really basic notes. I would probably save a few hundred more and get an entry level ultra book or something like that. It'll be much more useful in the long term. Trust me on this one.

If you want a leisure computer with top notch productivity and the ability to run some work programs then you should stick with Windows 8. Why not try Acer's new 8 inch model coming out.
If you want a leisure computer that is a peripheral to a real work machine (a desktop or laptop) that you might just do a little document editing on then the Nexus 7 is the better choice.
Weigh how much you're going to rely on the device for getting things done.

yeah kingsoft did seem quite slow when I tried it on my phone :/ no idea what my university uses, but others use iPads just fine there. Also not looking to do anything complex really, just be able to write down notes quickly during lectures and the ability to write notes on power points (like on a windows computer)

Kingsoft although the most full featured free office app on android it is also the most laggy.
If your getting 300 get it as a gift card for a local or online store so you can contribute your own money towards a win8 machine.
Android is not a desktop or laptop replacement. As said before it compliments one well but I can't imagine using a mobile OS for my main computer through uni. Would have driven me nuts!
Even for not taking I believe paper is better as you have the freedom to combine words with diagrams and formula much easier.
Tablets work better in a corporate environment for emails and reviewing documents. When studying I think this technology can get in the way of learning and becomes a distraction.
My opinion obviously YMMV

Thanks heaps for that input ozzy unfortunately as I have just started uni, saving up an extra $200-300 may be quite difficult, especially since my trimester just ended so I'll need to buy more books soon. I will try and look around for a small netbook or cheap laptop that runs windows, hopefully I can come by one. If not, i can always attach a keyboard to my galaxy haha

I agree that if you're going to be writing papers and such, a laptop is the only way to go. You can probably get a cheap one for around $300 if you keep an eye out for sales.

I'll be writing papers on my main PC at home, I'm just looking for something to write down notes and things while I'm at uni, so I don't get mixed up between physical notes and virtual notes, like to keep everything on one platform for convenience really

I see. In that case a pen and notebook is probably the best thing for taking notes, but maybe I'm just old because that's how I did it when I was in University
