Tutorial
Here is a vid tutorial on rooting that worked great for me..

Here is the kernel I used to overclock.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1344330
For the kernel, pay attention to the vid. After you watch it you will understand how to flash the kernel or a different ROM if you want to go down that route.
Im running stock with this kernel at 1.5ghz. Works great. I used SetCPU to change clock speeds.

This is probably stupid question but.... I rooted my hero today and flashed a Rom to it, do I need to flash a kernel? If so then whaT is the best kernel to use? Thanks in advance.

The stock kernel is fine unless you want to overclock. If you want to Overclock you want ToastCFC's godmode kernel.
Thanks man I really appreciate it. Is the speed noticeBly better when overclocking? and I'm running damages 2.09.1, what should I overclock to for best performance? I'm sorry for being such a newb

I just installed tegrak overlocking on my sgs fone. Pls help me what settings will i use. im running android 2.3.3. pls help
You need a kernel that supports overclocking. For values just look in the Glitch-kernel-thread. And I prefer 'Voltage Control'.

hi. i saw the thread. WOW too techy for me. i dont know where to start and what to look for
Just look at the values.

i dont know what is my rom? if cvm or maui? i mean cm
Go to Settings -> About phone then you'll see what's your ROM.
how will i know if im CM7 or maui as my fone doesnt say so
errrr if you're talking about the tegrak overclocking app, it does overclocking by itself without the need for a custom kernel or other app. that is its purpose *facepalm*
Try set OC to 1.2 GHz and see how that goes. if it makes the phone reboot/not work properly, click on "optimisation" and increase the voltage value for 1200 a little bit (ie. 25 or 50 mv). You can apply the same principles when attempting higher GHz too.
actually ive installed voltage control but it says my fone's kernel does not support voltage control. What kernel will i install so i can overclock my fone. Pls see below my firmware:
Firmware version: 2.3.3
Baseband version: I9000 XXJVO
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-i9000XWJVH-CL184813
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.XWJVO
@oswade i followed your instructions. my fone did not boot at 1.2 ghz. what does it mean?
by the way i read from other thread that stock kernel cant be overclocked that i need a custom kernel for overclocking? if this is true then installing tegrak overclock is useless except for custom kernel?

Yes, you need a custom kernel.
And be sure to have the kernel cleaning script on your sdcard to, it can provide flashing if you have made sh*t.
Available here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1053304
Thanks Lunchbox!! However i find it complicated and im scared to do it. i guess ill be needing a tutor for this.
Tank u very much!

Why?
You lookbfor a kernel that fits your firmwareversion and that supports oc. You have to flash this kernel via Odin oder CWM (there are always installation instructions in each kernel-thread). Then you download 'Voltage Control' out of the market, set your CPU frequency and you are done.

Speed MoD K3-9 ICS Kernel is grt. Am currently using it. There are a lot many choices in Custom ROM. It all depends on ur taste & requirement.
If you ask me Kingdroid Notemania 5.1 & Paranoid Android are my preferred choice. Download & install instructions are in theier respective OP thread. Just do a search in the development forum.
Happly Flashing..

Why not try Droidfriend Sharp by Comdevx http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1867889. Flash through .35 kernel & no need to OC or use Chainfire3D because default setting is already good for HD gaming.:good:
Actually all the 0.35 kernel gb roms will be good for gaming as far as the performance goes. What i have found out is that the lag in various games in rc3 or sharp rom is not because of kernel. I did this -> flash rc3, then flash modded sharp rom fix 1, there is no lag and then again flashed rc3 then no lag in rc3 also. So it seems the problem is somehow related to your first flash from 0.32 kernel at least that's what i found out, others may confirm.
I found BlackIce a memorably superstable rom!

Hello forum users
can anyone share a recent lag fix for my i9000 please?
i rooted my device and i have got Busybox 1.17.1
kindly regards,
stepan12
Hey,
First update your busybox, and if you doesn't matter, I would recommend you to change to a custom Rom. I'm from the i9001 but I'm sure that in the development forum of the s1 are a lot of tweaks for GB. If not look into the i9001 forum

For my experience, stock ROM sucks and always lag. Ever since I updated mine to Supernexus 2.0 M1 ROM, my phone is just as stable as Nexus 4.
No joke. Do it to believe. If you don't wanna do, then hard reset your phone and format the entire drive. Should be pack with a lot temp files and caches.

which rom has a lag fix? and if i install is my device the same? i mean the theme etc etc..?
You don't need to install a custom rom. Speedmod kernel should be what you're looking for.
