You can't restore stock ROM using kies.. ODIN is the only way to restore stock ROM. Look for your original baseband first and there are a lot of guides here on how to do it.

[Q] updating through odin or kies

Ok I just got my sgs and I was wondering if I can backup my current build to restore later if any problems should come up and be able to send it to repair (warranty)
Also I want to update to 2.2.1, do I have to update through kies before I flash to darkys or another rom? Or just flash my rom with odin (I'm on 2.1)

Look up Titanium Backup or Clockwork Recovery.

You shouldn't need to. Check the install instructions for Darky's ROM (or whichever you're looking at) to be sure.
Can I roll back on the same configuration if needed? You know if I mess something up really bad and need to take the phone to get serviced?

Ok I'm not clear on this ... I install
Clockwork put darks rom on the sdcard flash it etc... My question is if I'm on jm4 can I just do that? Or do I have to first update through kies? Will it update my phone to 2.2 and jpy automatically is what I'm saying ...

[Q] can't upgrade to 2.2 after flash to stock

i flashed back to eclair from 2.3.4 and wanted to upgrade to 2.2 and it will download the files but when it goes to install them it fails,i try'd from kies mini and the OTA still nothing can anyone help????
Look in dev. Someone posted a stock kb1 flashed with heimdall.
Don't do an OTA update after flashing back to stock 2.1 as you will most likely brick. When you connect to Kies mini what message do you get? If it's the "unregistered device" message, read through this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=880223 and I think there are a couple other threads here that address the same issue.
edit:
oops, I misread your post about Kies being able to download the files but not install. sorry.
edit #2:
Why go back to stock 2.2 anyway?

yes you can, but it would be better if you flash I9001XXKPS, its 2.3.6 and supported for most mods
here is the link for all stock roms: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1346245

Help on upgrading to ics firmware

i have a unit with UBKK1 baseband version, which i learned was a brazilian rom. Now i currently live in the Philippines and i cant get an ICS update thru kies here because of the rom. i went to the samfirmware site and found a Philippine rom, my question is can i flash this rom over the old GB brazilian rom using odin without any problems? my phone is currently unrooted thru the one click method, it was previously rooted thru the same method.
Ive also read you can change the country code, if i change it to the Philippine code and update thru kies will it work??
if you change the csc then yes you should be able to upgrade with kies tho i always download the rom i want then use pc odin its just a personal preference
Why don't you download Stock ICS ROM directly.... And flash it using pc odin??
can i download any stock ICS rom and just flash it with odin without any problems?
Yes you can.
Ive just now rooted my note on brazilian rom (stock GB rom), if i upgrade to the taiwanese rom using pc odin will i still retain root? and do i need to uncheck the usb debugging before proceeding with pc odin?
No you wont keep root.
Yes uncheck usb debugging.

if you want to flash phone in odin then phone should be in download mode, usb debugging is not matter, and you can root your phone again after flash, vie cf root make search at xda you will found that.

I would buy Mobile Odin Pro from the market, and flash this rom from here http://www.hotfile.com/dl/156659405/b6c3080/N7000DXLP9_N7000OLBLP6_XTC.zip.html . This will flash the correct rom and keep root.
thanks for all the helpful replies, i was able to successfully flash taiwanese ics firmware update using pc odin. and you guys are right, i did lose root. now the only problem is how to go back on root as i've frozen a lot of apps on titanium backup before and those apps aren't showing after the update. it seems like flashing over to a newer firmware didnt reset the phone. all my previously installed apps are still there.
Guys, after updating to ics, i couldn't install apks using astro file manager or even the stock file manager.Pressing the install button won't work. Previously on gb stock rom everything works. Is this an ics bug?

You can use Kies to update. Have the latest version of Kies installed in your PC. Let Kies to install the required files for your Phone.
Connect your Phone to PC via USB Data Cable. If there is an update for your Phone, Kies will detect and intimate you.
Another step is via Odin. You can hit the link here http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/ & find your desired Firmware and install using Odin. Its a manual process which you have to do (Most prefer this)
