Hi Everyone,
I live in Toronto and I am on Fido right now. I also have a Bell SIM that I use from time to time. It seems that Rogers has Galaxy Samsung Note I717.
What would be the best move for me? Buy a more expensive N-7000 or a I717?
I think N-7000 is not LTE compatible with Fido? (correct me if I am wrong).
I am also very interested in Ice Cream sandwich and heard all updates and better apps will be released only for N-7000 or sooner for it. Is that true?
Thanks

I SHALL SAVE YOU!
I'm on fido (NO LTE, HSDPA+ gives around 7.9 Mbsp down 1.7 Mbsp up), and recently bought a N7000. My thoughts to you are:
1) Do you need LTE? Yes -> I717
2) Stock experience with ICS coming sooner rather than later -> N7000
3) Performance -> I've tried both the N7000 and I717 and I'd say the N7000 runs a TINY bit better. Benchmarks are over-exaggerated.
Also, N7000 development is much better ATM, which is understandable - it's an older phone. So, if you like playing with custom roms, that might perhaps be another point worth considering.
Edited: this thread might also be of interest to the OP.
Thanks guys.
So, I don't use LTE either but am disappointed that I can't full-proof the future with a N-7000 version as I am leaning more towards that too.
Got following questions now:
A- ICS is not released for it yet right?
B- I get H+ on my phone, that is 4G or HSPA+ and not LTE right?
C- What about rooting Galaxy Note? N-7000 or I717?
D- What is a better phone than Note now? Galaxy S II? or yet better than that?
Thanks again,

A)There is a leaked unofficial version and AOSP based roms right now. Official ICS is coming in Q2.
B)Yes, that is "4G/HSPA+"
C)Both are easy to root, if you have rooted Android phones before, no need of ADB to root.
D)Right now, the N-7000 is the best phone b/c of it's screen size and resolution. The only phones to compare would be the Optimus LTE, Galaxy Nexus, and Sony Experia S(Super High PPI). Honestly, I would wait until the SIII comes out if you're this late into the year as Quad-Core phones are coming around the corner and you can future-proof yourself better this way.
Thanks Kotaro_14.
I am afraid no one else do a big screen like Note anytime soon and it's such a beautiful phone that I am in love with it now
But, low battery, no ICS is a turn off.
I thought screen size and resolution are the same on both version except for having different graphic card chips?!

N7000 has physical buttons that don't waste screen estate like the i717.

LTE is overrated until carrier start rolling out $20 unlimited data plan, which definitely will not happen before we see the next "note" HSPA+ in my area is doing 7mbps RL. There is virtually no difference between the two based on what I do with my Note. Not to mention LTE cut your battery life by an enormous margin. I would not bother even if my phone has it.
I know Galaxy SIII is around the corner and probably has quad processor. But the main reason I dump iphone for Note is because of the screen size. Making mobile task much easier. Unless SIII had 5.3" screen, it is not for me. Should you wait for SIII? Well, if you can wait... Usually mean that you dont need it....
Honestly, I really dont know how a quad core cpu / gpu will improve user experience. You can port the most demanding game to Galaxy SIII or even CAD program, but you will still be limited to the 4~5 ish [email protected]@ those with gigantic fingers or guerrilla palms are going to be sh!t out of luck
Well the reason for me to wait for the SIII is that with a more powerful GPU and CPU a port for Windows 8 will probably come along and that's what really interests me. And of course Ubuntu also. I agree the screen size won't be as big as the Note, but I'm willing to get it b/c of huge dev community, probably fix the black clipping issue, and SAMOLED+. Of course the Note 2 is also another option.

+1 i like xda-developers
There was an OpenMonko or OpenMoko project just prior to Android that did Linux on the DIY hardware but it died with Android coming out. I think expectations from phones are way too much now that it requires it's own separate OS fork like Android.
Thanks for all the info guys. I am leaning towards N-7000 now. Hate the no warranty though.
I had the i717 for a few weeks. Honestly ran great. Played 8-bit 720p mkv vids no problem. I saw a few quirks with 10-bit mkv files, but I'm unsure as to whether I should attribute that to the video player (moboplayer) or the chipset.
I rooted and flashed it over to SAUROM on day one. I didn't have too many performance issues, though it somewhat stuttered trying to run Ocarina of Time, moreso than my Atrix did.
I don't have LTE down here in my part of Florida, US, and I don't expect to see it any time soon. I wish I had a few tags to toy with the NFC, I really would've liked to have tossed one in my car dock.
My reason for returning was mostly the cost of phone + AT&T service. Monthly prices were more than I calculated, and I thought it in my best interest to pick up the phone elsewhere for cheaper while using a prepaid service. I found no real fault with the phone itself.
I just ordered an n7000 from Expansys US. It should arrive tomorrow. Apparently Expansys has a European office to help with claims on Samsung's 2-year warranty. Moreover, their price for a new n7000 with Samsung car charger and next-day shipping still came out to $100 less than trying to buy a brand new i717 here in the States. I won't be able to compare performance until it's in my hands, but the consensus seems to be that the n7000 offers a bit more performance, especially on ICS.
I'm trying to decide between the n7000 and the i717 myself. I'm currently on Verizon but am looking to escape Big Red.
The N7000 obviously is a bit faster, from the benchmarks it seems mostly on higher end 3D stuff that the N7000 is faster than the I717. I like the design of the N7000 better as well, and unlocked aspect appeals to me considering the carrier problems I've had. From the sound of it the ROM situation sounds better, which also appeals to me.
My main concern here is carrier. T-mo is out as I don't want to be stuck with 2G. AT&T worries me though, some people have been using the $50 Gophone unlimited plan, but it sounds like if AT&T finds out it's a smart phone you're out of luck, and the data plan options for pre-paid are expensive last I looked.
The plus side of the I717 is that I can get it on contract and defray the up front cost. Plus I don't have to worry about figuring out what kind of plan I can use on the International version. I also get a corporate discount of 20-22% on AT&T but it doesn't apply to the prepaid or "GoPhone" plans. A typical plan (450 min, unlimited texting, 3gb data) would probably run me about $77/mo after tax.
I'd be tempted to go N7000 and get a normal plan from AT&T and skip the Gophone hassles, but I refuse to sign a 2 year contract and I don't know if they'll allow you to be on a normal plan if you don't sign a contract. I know T-mo won't.
So opinions, what would you folks do in my situation? N7000 with normal plan, N7000 with Gophone, or I717 with normal plan?
You can reflash the modem of the i717 for full 3G compatibility on T-mobile AWS bands, so that might be an advantage over the n7000. Moreover, with the recent Skyrocket ICS leak, I'd expect to see some sort of ICS on the i717 within the next couple of weeks.
If you're not overly concerned about warranty, I'd honestly recommend picking up an i717 on Craigslist/eBay and taking it to a prepaid AT&T MVNO like Red Pocket or Straight Talk. If you're in an area where T-Mobile offers better service, eBay can get you an unlock code for $25, then just flash the proper modem and head to T-Mo prepaid or Simple Mobile. Either way, you're looking at $45-60 a month.
While performance may be marginally better on the n7000, I found the i717 to be in no way lacking after two weeks of use. The biggest deciding factors for me was cost. I wanted the security of a manufacturer's warranty, and Expansys offered a new n7000 for less than I could pick up an i717 here.
Hmm, I'd never heard of Red Pocket. It appears they have coverage anywhere AT&T does. The $60 for unlimited talk/text/2gb data is appealing and I'd not have to worry about contracts and such...
If you're looking into the MVNOs, I've heard Jolt Mobile offers better service than Red Pocket at the same price. Either way, Red Pocket apparently has the nasty issue where, if you try to re-up your plan a few days early, you lose the last few days of the plan and the new billing cycle starts up the day you pay. I've heard of no such issue with Jolt.
I'm personally opting for Straight Talk next month. They recently started offering sim cards for their AT&T and T-Mobile services. They market an "unlimited everything" plan for $45/month, but the truth is if you go over 100MB a day, you risk them cutting off your service. That's not an issue for me, as I don't even hit 100MB a week, but some users prefer the comfort of using 2GB whenever/however they want. If you go over with RP/Jolt, they just cut off data until the next month.
Moreover, Straight Talk is one of the few AT&T MVNOs to get access to AT&T's roaming partners. Most others are limited to just the AT&T towers. It's something to consider if you travel a lot.
As of now, none of them have access to AT&T's LTE service, so regardless of the device you choose, you'd be limited to HSPA+ service, which really isn't a bad "limit" at all. If you're concerned about battery life, SAUROM for the i717 is based on the Canadian i717 ROM, and it gives you the option to turn LTE off. Obviously not an issue with the n7000.
I think I'm just going to suck it up and get the I717... I have my eyes on an amp for my home theater and it pretty well goes out the window for lack of funds if I get the N7000. Hopefully AT&T doesn't sit on the ICS upgrade for too long compared to the N7000.
If I didn't get a discount for service through my employer it would probably be a different story.
That and with my luck I'd have to ship the thing back to the UK for warranty service when something went wrong with it...
Thanks for your input guys.
Ruh roh... it looks like AT&T is going to be a pain about my credit. Odd since Verizon and T-mo never had any issues (though T-mo made me pay a $50 deposit).
I may have to go International after all.
Been toying with the n7000 that came in today.
Handles videos like a champ, but not much better than the i717. 8bit 720p mkvs still fly, thanks to hardware decoding. 10bit 720p mkvs resort to software decoding and stutter.
I've tried two video players for the 10bit video. MoboPlayer plays them full-speed, but there are plenty of graphical glitches like color wash out and excessive blockiness. MX Video Player plays without graphical issue, but video is somewhat slow and stuttery. I'm hoping an overclock kernel will help.
Ocarina of Time ran more smoothly than it did on my i717. Still not entirely smooth, but definitely playable.
As far as functionality, LTE was always out of the question, but I apparently traded the NFC chip for an fm radio. That's actually worthwhile to me, as I attend several events over the year that broadcast audio over local fm.
I am -not- enjoying this home button. I've got fairly large hands, so I haven't had much issue using the Note one-handedly. The issue is with the capacitive buttons. Since I hold the Note in my left hand, on the i717, I could comfortably reach the Menu, Home, and Back buttons with my left thumb. I never used the Search button. On the n7000, what used to be the Back button is now the edge of the Home button, and the Back button is pushed further to the side. It's not entirely unreachable, but it's very uncomfortable. Then again, most users here probably have hands smaller than mine, so your mileage may vary.
I'll be toying with ROMs tomorrow, but quick glance tells me the ICS roms aren't as stable as I'd prefer, so I'll hold off on those for a bit.
So yeah, if I had to compare the two right now:
i717: LTE, NFC, more comfortable Capacitive button layout
n7000: FM Radio, Cheaper New (unless ordering 32GB model), better Emulator performance
Both handle movies amazingly well. While the n7000 definitely has more ROM options now, that'll fix itself in time, and what's currently available for the i717 is good quality. ICS should follow shortly.

What are your thoughts on Samsung Galaxy S or the Vibrant as it is called any body going to jump from the N1 to the Galaxy S?
I have seen some of the specs although quite impressive I still have a hard time a camera with no flash and Samsungs lack of care for their customers!
What are your thoughts??
Nah, I'm still very happy with my N1, I do have another line which has made me consider getting it for that...but I think my next android phone will have a physical keyboard, front facing camera and dual processor, plus I'm a hardcore HTC fan haha.
I am with TMobile, and I've been Rockin the G1 since it was 1st availible in 08...
I am SUPER excited about purchasing the vibrant the second its availible. (July 21)
I don't mind not having a flash bc I don't have one now. I am however excited to have a zoom on the camera.
If I'm not mistaken, sprints version will have a front facing camera, as well as a sliding keyboard. Now that's Cool. But not having those won't deter me from getting it. This whole time I was waiting till sept so I can get a full discount on the nexus, but F it...I'm glad to Jump on this Vibrant!
But I wonder... I've become so used to flashing ROMs and customizing my rooted G1, are all androids Rootable? Like, eventually will I be flashing ROMS on the vibrant?

i am loving my N1 and I have to say that this is the BEST android phone that I have dealt with! I have an upgrade available as well and I am thinking of getting it but I know that my N1 will be my "daily".
What makes me angry with Tmo is that they always seem to be the last to jump on the BEST phones available as if Tmo is not campaigning for the cool phones like the EVO, or the Droid X. It is alomost like an after thought that we get the "hand-me-downs".
That is why I think the N1 is for now the best android device available for T-mo.
I agree 100% with you. I wish Tmo was wayyy more aggressive in their pursuit of phones. However they did have the 1st android phone. But still...TMo has always been good to me and their customer srervice is outstanding...but Jeeeezus MAAN! Let's get a decent line up of phones!.
After posting my 1st comment about the vibrant, I started looking around...seems like ppl are having uisssues with gps and lag? Great! .... for real?

Having seen what happened with the Samsung Galaxy and Behold 2, i wouldnt ever touch a samsung android phone again!
I know alot of android phones get deserted by the manufacturer and there's tons of complaints about people stuck on 1.5 or 1.6, but what samsung did with those two phones is horrible.
For the behold 2 they didnt publish complete source code, and abandoned major updates very quickly. They said the behold 2 cant handle 2.1, when the Hero - the same hardware (MSM720x) and with less ram has just had a 2.1 update.
The Galaxy was advertised with many features it never actually had (android/software based), and it got so bad that O2 germany allowed anyone who purchased a galaxy on contract to send it back for a full refund, and this was 6 to 9 months after it was released on their network lol.
This isnt the usual 'why didnt HTC update my G1 to froyo' type of rant. Samsung abandoned these two phones within about 6 months of launch and purposly released just enough source code to cover their asses. Not impressed at all
Galaxy s is good. But I'm waiting for something that will leap frog it.
In particular, I want a screen with higher resolution. I'm not used to apple having something better than me =)

The new screen on the Galaxy S is actually the same resolution as the new iPhone...
The only reason I have considered getting the vibrant is that I am hoping it will get rid of my edge/3g issues. Sometimes I get so pissed at my nexus, it randomly switches to edge, then pandora stops, then I have to lock it on WCDMA only, but sometimes that doesnt work lol.
I'll be getting one for the Wife who is using a MT3G
Me I'm happy with my N1, but will play around with it once she gets it

^ excellent real world experience there...
i won't buy another n1 because of the antennae issues, same with the iphone 4. it's a stupid, stupid design problem, just like the n1 has a really stupid problem with connectivity.
OFF CONTRACT- get whatever you want. i really don't understand people waiting for an 'upgrade' on contract, you can vote with your money or just play along with the rest of the sheeple.
the next android device i'll buy will be:
1 another g1, it's hard to beat for the craigslist prices now
2 whatever full querty, physical keyboard, dual processor, 1gb of ram, dual flash, OFF CONTRACT GSM phone comes out from htc.
i'll lean towards #1 since #2 might take another year or so.

I don't know enough about developing roms to know for certain, but if this thing gets released on all the major carriers in the US....couldn't we just flash roms onto any of the devices and flash our service providers radios? If thats the case (which it may or may not be, not sure how the Sprint version may differ because of the hardware keyboard and I think Verizon's version may have an LED flash) then I am going to buy one for sure. There may be a lot of support for these if they really take off and sell well. Either way I am upset with my N1's touchscreen issues and 3G issues as well, and will be replacing it as soon as a supported worthy device comes along. Its a shame too cus I love my N1 and what it stands for, its gonna suck to go back to an old school carrier locked down device.

CDMA and GSM are different technologies, and all carriers use different bands. Short answer is no.
He is saying take the ATT galaxy and flash that radio to the ATT nexus.
Still the answer is no cause a radio has to be made specifically for the nexus to work.
No what I actually meant was if it was possible to just make a sort of generic rom that could be flashed to any of the 3 similar devices...Captivate, Fascinate, and Vibrant...and then flash a specific radio image for your own carrier. Like if I flashed the rom then flashed an AT&T radio to go with it. But after having my Captivate and reading about other users flashing Vibrant roms.....my idea is a bust, there are too many physical and software differences between devices. But we have a ClockworkMod recovery now and the Cyanogen team has a Captivate and they have started work already so its looking like we'll have some new eye candy and functionality soon.
Hello everyone,
I have a Galaxy S phone and enjoy it very much, I've wanted a Tab since I first saw them, just without a contract.
I have noticed that Sprint CDMA models with Bad ESN's (100% OK with me) are going for 275-350 dollars, sometimes brand new.
Is it still worth it? Do you guys still enjoy them?
Thanks for your input.
not a bad price if you just wanna use wifi with em. I prefer gsm models because of the increased internal memory instead of the cdma tabs. Do you have Cricket in your area? You can have the tab flashed to Cricket for data.
I love mine, but it is also a perfect replacement for my notebook and G1. Smart phones are too small for my taste, and I didn't need a full notebook anymore. Gave those devices to my wife and went with a ticked-out tab. And for me, the size is perfect.
For me it is. My tab does everything (that I can think of) the xoom does. I use it for tv, kindle, browsing and taking notes. 7 inches is perfect.

Absolutely! I was a little concerned about the wireless connectivity before I got it but it's excellent. Like the previous post, I take mine everywhere. The other thing I like is that when I turn off the wifi/3g to read an e-book at night, I wake up and it's still fully charged.
I'm pretty sold on the tabs size versus a 10 inch.. its bigger without being to heavy or a burden.
It seems like it would be enjoyable with 2.2/2.3 for the foreseeable future.
My next consideration is to buy one unsubsidized or to get one with a 2 year contract... whats your guys opinions, would you feel comfortable at this point buying one with a 2 year contract?
Seeing how people went ape**** for a nook for 200$ if you can find a galaxy tab for 275-280 range, it is better buy.
My htc desire hd arrived last saturday. I then noticed that i need to upgrade my plan as the unit is hugging too much internet bandwidth so i went to my carrier to have my plan upgraded. To my surprise, i was given a galaxy tab for free as part of the new package. So i ended up with two new devices. I think galaxy tab will be a great device in my work and will come in handy with my htc desire hd if it runs out of juice. One downside i only noticed is the absence of skype video call for android OS. But i love this one

I just acquired a galaxy tab this afternoon. It is on verizon's network but I was hoping to flash it to cricket but I'm not really able to find any resources on this. Is there a tutorial on this?
if you're used to browsing on a smaller device, then move to this one, you will not go back and if you try something bigger, it will be great, but when you start thinking about taking it with you everywhere, you go back to the Galaxy Tab.
Oh, I dont regret it one bit. Even got 3g since its so super cheap, 20 a month, went with Verizon though due to the low low price on contract, 200 dollars. I definitely love it, the perfect companion to my galaxy s phone. Thanks for all the input though guys.
P.s i think we will start to see development go up due to these things finally becoming affordable. Lets face it, most people wont dump 600 or 800 dollars on a tablet.

Sprint tablet recovery
I have a sprint tab rooted and flashed with kaz' voodoo kernal. Aside from no market app, no auto screen rotation, it's faster even with out ext4. How can I safely recover to stock. Or is there a more complete kernal I can put in to get back to closer to normal functionality. Any help would be appreciated.
I had one over a year ago, traded it for a laptop, then sold it for like $300 or so.. kind of regretted it, it was a sprint model. saw a bad esn model on craigslist, but picked it up for $100 so now i'm trying to see how to flash it from verizon to cricket. Funny i have no problems with doing the phones from spring/samsung to cricket, but verizon isn't so easy.. what am i doing wrong hmm
This thread helped me so much I was also thinking Galaxy tab, but I wasn't sure is it worth it since I already have "smartphone". No I am sure that I choose this one )
Totally worth it! Specially if you like to tweak around. I call my tab "Lazarus", since I killed it and brought it back to live so many times
S & Tab Combo
I got a Galaxy S & Tab as a combo from Optus. I must say I do still do like the size of the Tab; big enough to read easily, small enough to fit in a jacket pocket.
Just upgraded the Tab to Ice Cream Sandwich. Nice upgrade and pretty stable. If you can get the Tab that cheap, it makes it hard to justify spending $600 on one of the newer 10" models.
Not sure if anyone has checked the Rogers Website lately but they have some really awesome phones. In fact I think they had beat out Bell in terms of the LTE version of the Galaxy S II. It has a different form factor than the Bell Galaxy S II in that it doesn't have the physical home button. Now I still have to check if I'm eligible for an upgrade but I'm stuck between two of these phones Rogers is offering. The Moto Razr has some really nice specs., mainly screen resolution being Amoled is much higher than the Galaxy S II. Other differences are apparent one being a tad slower in the CPU, and not being LTE. I'm not in the Toronto or Ottawa area so I don't think LTE is here in my area as of yet so LTE isn't really that important. Aside from the differences, I'm kinda stuck between the two phones. I like the Moto's design it's different thin nicer screen etc. The Samsung is also nice in that it's faster and of course a great backing from XDA developers. So what do you guys think, which would you choose having reviewed the phones specs?

If you upgraded last year with the captivate then I don't think you are eligible for an upgrade yet. I'm hanging on to my captivate till next year, as it still does everything I want it too. If I was going to upgrade I would get the Galaxy S II.

this section is for questions about the captivate....NOT about which phone you should get next.
BE DECISIVE.
get a coin, heads sgs2, tails moto. now BEFORE you flip it search your feelings, there is one side you'll be hoping for. get that phone.
My current cell phone is the Nexus 1. I'm rooted and running the latest stable version of Cyanogen mod. My phone has a constant alert regarding memory running low and it gets really slow at times. Battery life is good, but my charge plug is a little broken (usb cable falls out if you shake it around while plugged in).
My dilemma is on what to buy...
I love the specs, size, upgradability, and stylus that the Note has to offer. The Note is a huge upgrade from the Nexus 1, but at the same time I really want a tablet. I mainly use my nexus 1 to watch movies and play games. I barley use it to actually make a phone call or browse the internet. I think a tablet would make this experience much more enjoyable compared to the Note, but at the same time the screen on the note is so large that maybe it would be acceptable enough for my needs...
I can always use my nexus 1 to make phone calls and returns txts while using the Transformer prime to watch movies, play games, and surf the web via tethering, but I can't carry the Transformer with me everywhere I go like I could with a Galaxy Note.
To those with the Note. Is it a suitable device for gaming and movie watching? Would you prefer to use a tablet for these tasks or is the Note surprisingly comparable?
There are other factors involved as well. I'm on T-Mobile and will only have 2g if I get the Note. The Note is also ~$700 off contract compared to the Transformer which is $500 and would be able to tether off my 3g HSPA Nexus 1.
I have a bunch of trade offs and I'm having trouble deciding what will be best. I'm hoping you guys can help me out.
I was wondering the same thing and ideally I'd like to try them both in person to make that decision but I may end up getting both. They are both the most innovative of their respective form factors IMO.
Reading Amazon reviews among others you see people saying they use their other devices including tablets to a far lesser extent now that they have the SGNote so it might seem logical to consider it first if you're on a tight budget but I still find it hard to believe it could replace the Asus Transformer Prime especially with its dock when not highly mobile.
Good luck & let us know what you decide..
---------- Post added at 04:09 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:01 PM ----------
BTW I doubt I would consider the SGNote for T-Mobile, 2G is too slow IMO.
Its pretty suitable for movie watching, I just bought this phone as my portable media device but I think the transformer prime would give a better over all experience as the screen is bigger, the only realy benefit SAMOLED gives is deeper blacks.

Sounds right, curious if the SAMOLED's less than natural colors ever bothers you, they seem to bother me on the lower resolution SAMOLED phones but a bit less on the same res but lower pixel density Tab 10.1 screen (I prefer Transformer's IPS for a tablet)? -Thx
Hello,
I have an iPad 1 at home as well as a SG Note. So I'd say I could help you with your little dilemma
Actually I have to say that watching a movie with 5.3'' screen is not that comfortable. So if you really want to watch movies in first place I'd tell you to buy the Transformer Prime.
On the other hand you have your phone always with you so you could watch movies or series whenever wherever - as you said you won't have the Prime always with you.
But since I bought the Note my iPad lies at home nearly all the time not being used much - the Note is big enough to surf on the internet and movies are watchable as well - even though its not as comfortable as it is using the iPad.
But you have to think about the battery life as well; even though the Note has an awesome battery life, watching movies will kill your battery pretty fast....
So - to come to a conclusion - best is to buy both but the Note will be more useful since you'll always have your phone with you!
Let me know about your final decision
why not wait for the asus padfone, best of both worlds. at the moment, its still using a tegra 3 quad core 1.5ghz chip with 1gb ram and 12 cuda core gpu.
Why not pick up an evo view (sprint's version of the flyer) for under $250. 7" screen, 32gb on board. Screen is nice and bright. I ditched all my other tablets outside of the touchpad and pretty much carry it everywhere. Should be getting honeycomb soon which will bring more functionality to the scribe pen too.

I do like that Asus is not afraid to innovate but I'm not sold on the Padfone's compromises & rumored price point ($800-$1000), if something happens to your phone the tablet becomes a paperweight.
I think the slim Transformer Prime with its battery-port extending slim keyboard is more innovative without compromises at competitive pricepoints. Redundancies in hardware+cloud based software-data should work well unless the budget is tight and user is willing to accept compromises in form & function.
I still would enjoy a projector in my handheld like the Samsung Beam but I don't think it ever made it out of Singapore but let see what happens at the next CES & MWC..
New information regarding a Google Tablet within the next 6 months just came out today. This definitely makes me lean more toward the note right now. Anyone using it on T-Mobile's network? How is the 2G?
Screw it! I decided to go with the note. I should have it delivered it my door tomorrow (I love amazon prime).
I'm going to stick with tmobile for now. If the 2G gets to be unbearable then I'll suck it up and cancel my plan and move to AT&T.
Thanks everyone for their replies in this thread.

If Google didn't buy Motorola they should have backed Asus with their innovative Transformer Prime. They are using Samsung for its Nexus line so they should support the Transformer Prime more, maybe Asus could have hit their target dates better. Their tablet market share is still not taken seriously vs their dominant smartphone market share.
2012 looks like it will offer higher res tablet displays than currently available. SGNote has same 1280 x 800 res as Transformer Prime which is enough for the web but graphics will benefit from higher res.
How often are you in Wi-Fi?, why put up with 2G-what are you paying at T-Mobile?
Good luck & upload a YouTube video with your experience if you can..
A Google backed Asus tablet would be a dream come true for me.
I'm almost always around wi-fi so I'm not really concerned with the 2g. I had accidentally disabled 3g on my Nexus 1 some months back and it took me about a month to notice. My monthly bill with t-mobile is about $80 per phone (3 smart phones on the family plan), but I actually have a special deal where I get more minutes and cheaper data from being a loyal customer (15+ years) for the price of a lesser plan.
My brother was about to cancel his plan (he's on my family plan) to get the Galaxy Nexus on verizon, but they offered him a $4.99 Galaxy S II to stay. He took the offer. That level of customer service is not something I dont really want to leave. My line is due for an upgrade next November which should be right around the time the new quad-core phones are being released (and a new nexus maybe), so I'm going to try and wait it out.

It had been expected but now it's official..unclear how such a deal would have affected the SGNote for you but there were rumors that T-Mobile may abandon the US market if the deal did not go through. T-Mobile is $ 4 Billion dollars wealthier so I doubt it will happen soon & they have time to reassess.
If you are mostly on Wi-Fi as am I it won't be the same issue but it'll likely annoy you when you're not obviously.
Let us know how you like it..
Yea, I will definitely post my feelings on it. I'm sure there are other Tmo guys out there wondering if its worth the loss of 3G, but something interesting about the AT&T merger news is that part of the deal if it didnt go through was that TMo would get to use AT&Ts 3g bands. If this is true, and they implement it fast enough, I might have a 3G note after all.

Really-source? The following suggested the opposite (if it had gone through):

Did you get it from "Sold by Global Mobiles and Fulfilled by Amazon for $650.98 or OEM Shop for $636.90" + $3.99 overnight Prime shipping? You can still return it within 30 days for a refund minus return shipping if unsatisfied for whatever reason right?
At&T has a new price point for HOX at $99.99 on contract so is the Atrix HD worth it still? Right now I am not sure since CM10 looks pretty good on the HOX.

I strongly considered the One X but the limited and non-expandable internal memory was completely a deal breaker for me. I have a bunch of music and movies on a 32GB card that I would have had to squeezed down to its 16GB internal memory. Why in this day and age would they do that? Might be a "cloud" thing. Since with the "cloud" you don't need large on-board memory. I don't buy that. I don't want to blow my very limited unlimited data plan, and not all of us have LTE coverage. While I have LTE at home (though with WiFi I've never needed to use it) my work still is on edge!
In addition I got the Atrix HD for $49 from Best Buy AND I signed up for their upgrade gift card (back in Feb) so I got a $50 gift card back instantly.
Thanks and I forgot about the expandable memory, and good deal with bestbuy now. Wish I could do something like that myself, but I want to hold onto this unlimited plan for as long as I can just to stick it to At&t. Now that I think about it the I hope that the tmobile version gets a microsd card slot like the Sprint Evo LTE. Outside of that I hope motorola unlocks the AHD's bootloader since stock doesn't seem like it is taking advantage of the S4 cpu.
I also hate how they shrunk down the internal memory from 32GB to 16GB in the US version, it was a deal breaker for me as well.
I have my family on a family plan so we have 4 lines.
I have another upgrade coming in a week and my family is happy with what they got. I was thinking about picking up an SGS2 Skyrocket or maybe even the new Sony that came out, but now that the HTC One X is cheaper I'll be getting that.
When I traded my Atrix 2 in they gave me $150 and I got the Atrix HD and I still have the $100 gift card, so I'll be getting the OneX free as well (at cost of being in contract)
Even though the Atrix HD had been disappointing because the lack of a dev community and the locked bootloader. I've grown to really appreciate the phone because it's engineering has been so solid for the hardware/software, that this phone has been running so well I see no need to change anything about it.
Eventually in a few months Dev will pick up on the Atrix HD, until Then I'll have the OneX sometime next week to play with.
One X vs AHD
Yes it appears on Sunday the price of the 1X is going to match the price of the AHD making it a challenging decision. However, since the HTC has been out for a couple of months, many of the bugs and hardware issues have reared their ugly head, at least on the AC forums. Of course, I do realize this a very small percentage of the total population of One X owners. Regardless, I'm not a fan of what HTC did to a perfectly good functioning multi-tasking in ICS which is where the AHD shines. And yes, the lack of microSD in the HTC is also annoying.
Has anyone in this forum had any regrets for investing in a mid-level phone like this? All the GS3 fans rave about it, but it too has its issues and I don't like the fact that the native email client does not allow pinch zooming emails. When I tested the AHD it seems it does and I also like the Smart Actions app too.
As a noob Andriod user, would you folks recommend the AHD due to the near stock Android experience? I don't want to waste an upgrade and need to make the best decision. Thanks.

If I had the chance I'd get the SGS3
If I had to choose between the MAHD and the 1X, I'd probably stick with the MAHD. Even though the MAHD isnt really any fun to modify right now, that'll change soon or later.
It's really up to the person. If you already have doubts about the HTC One X's UI, then I'd stick with the MAHD
I love the ability to stack icons on your home screen to make folders, and the feature to swipe icons like your email or texts to get a preview without opening REALLY saves time and makes using ICS so much more productive.
As soon as we can unlock the boot loader, this phone will become a monster.
If we only had root access right now, I'd be able to edit the build.prop and have this phones hardware beat the 1x and SGS3 no sweat.
So if I understand correctly, an important part of the decision about which device to purchase should be the developer element? In another thread in this forum that has to do with someone that exchanged their GS3 for the AHD, a guy who's a big GS3 proponent stated he feels its unlikely the AHD will get a JB update since Moto moves very slowly with updates even though Google owns Moto Mobility. And since the boot loader is locked on this phone, there won't be any development yet.
From my perspective, the choice needs to weigh all the elements of the phone, how many issues people are experiencing and that it's well balanced in all areas. A new consumer review vid was just posted in the AHD forum on AC and it's well done. He points out all the strong points and the weak ones on the AHD, too. And as we know, the big sticking points on this phone are the camera and battery though from what I see in the XDA forum, most have found using Juice Defender and/or the Smart Actions battery saver help resolve the battery problem.
I like the new garnet red color for the ATT GS3 and with the credits I got at Amazon, it would reduce the price to nearly $100 (though I could get the AHD for $25 But money aside, I just want the best phone that will be reliable and do everything it should without any problems.

That doesn't actually have to be an important element in your decision if rooting, flashing Roms etc. isn't your strong point or desire in Android phones. Since this phone is still new development will be very slow for who knows how long!
I came from the GS3 which I owned for at least 3 weeks. I loved the phone, everything it was hyped for came with it. It was quick and snappy right out of the box, but so is the AHD. From owning the GS3 for that amount of time; easing into the AHD was not bad at all. It was still quick and snappy out of the box had no complaints thus far for speed/multitasking, phone as of now is unable to be rooted so what you get is what you get. As far as JB update...well I'm not too sure on that criteria, I came from both the Atrix and Atrix 2, now both phones still don't have ICS i believe don't ..quote me on that lol but both phones are capable to experience ICS thru ports via ROMs. So they still get a little taste of how it is, I personally believe if we don't "Officially receive JB" eventually we could possibly see ported ROMs of JB (BL unlocked hopefully) in the near future. Aside of the BL being locked some members are at work of producing a root method for our phones and once that gets done..boy our phones are just half way there lol.
Haven't had any problems with the battery thus far since I have activated Batt. Extender App thru Smart Actions immediately out of the box, also installed Juice Defender and I can say it does make a huge difference so your not missing out on the battery too much.
I too loved the look of the GS3 in Red and was considering exchanging colors as opposed to getting the AHD, but I came from the White GS3 and i suffered from the deadly "Paint Crack" defect on the back cover!! I figured damn well I don't like the blue color and it did have a problem as well with the back cover...so I assumed the red just might have a defect lying there somewhere hahah.
I purchased the GS3 at Radio Shack for $150 thru upgrade which came to $207 after taxes so if you do plan on ordering the device through Amazon your getting quite a good deal, cheaper than any other person had problem gotten the device for lol.
All in all the AHD is a very reliable phone as well as the GS3! Both phones are capable of doing the same daily routines i.e texting, calling, browsing, etc.(Root/Rom aside) You can't go wrong with either device they are both great and I recommend both, it totally comes down to personal prefrence! If you were to ask me IMO I would get the AHD it's price point is unbeatable and for what comes out of the box you definitely can't go wrong, you won't be disappointed! Hope I was able to be of some help!

Your unlimited plan will last as long as you want. Just don't downgrade data plans, because then you lose it. I kept mine. Actually did a cross upgrade (one of the phones on plan was due for upgrade but not the one that I wanted to upgrade). They switched my unlimited plan to a LTE unlimited plan, without any question, or argument.

Did you do this through at&t or a third party like best buy or Walmart? The reason I ask is when I went to a third party for an upgrade in the fall last year they said I would have to drop to a tiered plan. I went through At&t then to keep it, just wish I could get these reduced deals through places like amazon and RadioShack.

Chcl8.. Yes, you were of some help. Went back to the ATT store today and one of the reps is very knowledgeable and also owns a rooted Atrix that he's running Linux on too. I left the store thinking the GS3 might be the better decision due to not knowing if the AHD will ever get the JB update. And to me, that's BIG deal. I've never rooted or flashed a ROM due to owning an iPhone for so many years, though it's something I'd like to learn at some point. But I don't want to do anything that would void the warranty.
He said that after a few weeks I probably wouldn't notice the blue cast on the screen, though to me, it's pretty obvious now. And the points you are making about the hair line cracking in the plastic on the back of the GS3 was interesting and also made me think. But having a removable battery is nice just the same. I'm really torn right now and can't decide. And since I'll be getting the phone from ATT, getting the AHD will also include the car dock and car charger which is nice. I do prefer how Moto has skinned ICS as compared to TW though but the camera really isn't great at all. UGH!

I think it'll get it, it'll just be a long time before it comes out. I'd bet the next version of Android will be out before this phone gets JB. If you guys ever get root though you'll likely be able to get it before the official update drops via leak on the Moto servers like what has recently come out for the Atrix 2. As for the hairline cracking, if you go ripping the cover off like a madman you can expect that. but if you get it started a little, and then use your thumbnail to run along the bezel of the phone to get it off the rest of the way you won't have an issue.
