I just recently noticed a strange app showing up in my list of installed apps that I didn't install. When I dug a bit deeper, it seems this has been this is happening to a lot of people. The app shows up as "Souper Android Development" and I cannot figure a way to uninstall it.
Pretty much all of the comments left for this app in Google Play are the same theme.... "I did not install this, cannot get rid of it" It seems to be effecting only Droid 3 users at the moment.
Most of my research while looking around for answers has been the same. The app originally showed up with the name "Brett Henderson" but after a day or so, it started showing up as "Souper Android Development" and nobody really knows what it is. Other apps from this developer have been recently pulled from Google.
Some are saying it is linking to a pre-installed app, and simply a Google Play bug. Many have stated they contaced either Google, or Verizon, and they are looking into it at the moment.
Any other Droid 3 users have this app showing up on their phones?

Why does your google play look different compared to mine?
I dont have the green font and never saw "updated" just says "installed 36 "
Not sure, maybe you have a different version?
My Google Play Store is ver 3.5.15
Let me add a "me too".
I don't remember ever seeing either "Souper" or "Brett" before Google's change from Marketplace to Play Store. So, this might be related.
Regardless, Google needs to step up and address this ASAP. If it is malware or a virus, Google needs to remove it from all the phones it affected. If it is a bug, then Google needs to fix it.

Mine is 3.5.15, and looks like yours.
A friend of mine with a Droid 3 just asked me about this.
She says hers is constantly trying to update and is draining the battery, anyone else experiencing this? The app in question is the Souper Android Developer.
Update: I cannot confirm this! My friend said she just got off the phone with verizon, they told her it's malicious and that they're looking in to it. I wasn't there when she called so i have no idea how the conversation went. Hopefully it's not a virus and just some glitch on google's part.

I went to bed last night with a fully charged D3 (I unplugged it because it was fully charged). This morning my D3 was dead, with a completely drained battery.
Now, that happens to my phone every once-in-a-while (about once every 4 or 5 months). So this could be a coincidence. I guess I'll know more tomorrow morning.

Doesn't show up in NoBloat either (though, not 100% sure if it should).
Can anyone else confirm that Verizon is pulling the Droid 3 and giving out replacements? my friend says they're giving her a DINC2 to replace the Droid 3 and that it's a virus and they're not sure how to fix it at the moment.
Anyone else try talking to big red?

If Verizon is indeed throwing up their hands already, and giving out replacements for any Droid 3 with this app, it better be a Droid 4.

Folks, it was a bug in the Play Store that was first seen in 3.5.15. It is no longer showing up in the Play Store on my phone, so it looks like Google fixed this.
The app was on the play store on the web during the last few days, at this URL:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.motorola.contacts.preloaded
(This URL is no longer responding to the app. However, all of the comments that were in the Play Store on the phone were the same on this item in the Play Store, and the developer name changed from "Brett Henderson" to "Souper Android Development" at the same time it happened on the Play Store on the phone.)
Note that the URL ends in "com.motorola.contacts.preloaded". This is the preinstalled app /system/app/Preloaded.apk (rooted users can open that file in Root Explorer and look at the "AndroidManifest.xml" file within the .apk, and the top line is:
<manifest_package="com.motorola.contacts.preloaded" versionCode="1" sharedUserId="com.motorola.contacts" versionName-"1.0">
It's not a virus - it was just a preinstalled Motorola app associated with their custom Contacts app that the Play Store 3.5.15 update was improperly reporting as an installed app.
Well, sure enough after reading on Droid-Life that Google may have taken action and remotely removed it from peoples phones, I checked my apps list and it is now gone.

Right, it was probably a database issue that came to light when 3.5.15 was added, when the "My Apps" page added the "All" page (swipe to the right) that was not there in previous versions.

I am inclined to agree about it being a database issue.
Some built-in app on the Droid 3 got assigned the same place in Google's database as some app by Brett Henderson (aka Souper Android Dev). Brett might have actually been an innocent bystander to all of this.
The fix came in the database, not in our phones nor in the Play Store app itself.

Word is spreading that certain apps in the market are kept away from root users due to copy protection now that certain root users can copy apps to the card. If this is true, that sucks. This would mean that if you buy an app then get root, or upgrade your root to a new version, like jf 1.3 to 1.41 etc, you can't reinstall the app. If this is true, JF, please find a way so that a wipe is not needed to upgrade your roms.

No, the OP is correct. I have rooted jf rc33 and can only see a subset of the paid apps, not all.
My wife's g1 with rooted jf rc33 can see all the paid apps, but my g1 can only see a subset.
There is something going on
If you continue reading the post, you'll see that people are saying that there are more paid apps on non rooted phones then on rooted phones. It seems that app creators might have the right to copy protect their apps.

Not True. I'm running ADP1.1h and I have all the paid apps. I compared it to a non-rooted G1 as well as at www.cyrket.com.
The other thing that post says is that Dev or Rooted phones can't download Shazam which I also have on my phone because we can pull the app off the phone and distribute it or whatever. You don't have to have a rooted phone to pull apps off the device it can be done with Astro right off the market so ppl are just spreading rumors without any proof.

For a stock G1 you do need root to backup protected apps. Though not all paid apps are protected, so you can obviously back those up without root.
I haven't downloaded any paid apps as nothing other than BetterCut has really caught my yet, and from what i can see is bettercut has been removed from the market can't find in on either phone. But Shazam was given as an example as a Protected App and I just with Astro backed it up to the memory card and from there put it on my computer on a non-rooted G1 and was able to reinstall it back on the device.
There are some obvious holes in the market and it is terrible for Google to assume that we(rooted Devices) are all pirates and out to scan and steal from the devs which is ridiculous. Not the reason in my eyes to have a rooted device.

Shazam (the most updated one, updated via market) on my phone is not protected. So I'm not sure if I can vouch for that...
Try backing up Inaugural Address 2009 or Phandroid News, both are free protected apps. Astro should (will) fail on a none rooted one.
As for "from what i can see is bettercut has been removed from the market can't find in on either phone", it's appearing on my phone and my brothers right now (rooted and stock).

My question now is... How can you view /data/app-private and perform an ls command, on a non-rooted phone?
If your performing a back up on the phone than you can view inside /data/app-private, then you *should* be able to back it up.
I have rc33 jf v1.42 and i see bettercut.
Sooooo, there has been a lot of *****ing about the user profiles and how a new profile has to download and pay for apps you already own. I agree that it is stupid. Google should have done it differently and they still might. I decided to see how it worked and to see if there was a way to make the apps you already have downloaded visible to another user. After tinkering around for awhile I have found a way to do this.
EDIT: jeepguy04 has made an app that makes this super simple. The link to the app can be found on his thread HERE.
This DOES NOT work if you have restored your apps with titanium backup. I believe it has to do with where TiBu places the data on the sdcard.
Not all scenarios have been tried so your help testing and diagnosing would be appreciated.
Requirements:
- at least a half functioning brain (the more the better)
- a basic understanding of the Engrish language
- a cool beverage for those in warm climates or a warm beverage for those in cool climates
- you must be rooted
- you must have a root file explorer ( ES, Root Explorere, etc) or know how to push and pull files via adb though im not going to go over this method
Step 1:
Create a new user.
Step 2:
Use your root file explorer to navigate to /data/system/users/
This folder contains folders numbered 0 and XX. 0 is the folder for your main profile. XX (it is probably 10) is your second profile.
Step 3:
Open folder XX.
The file we are interested in is called package-restrictions.xml.
Step 4:
Open the package-restrictions.xml for editing.
When you open this up you see a long list strings like this:
stopped=”true” nl=”true” />
These correspond to the packages you have installed on your main profile. The one above obviously is for SketchBook Pro.
If i wanted this to be available on my second user I would simply delete the whole line from this file.
Step 5:
Reboot, log in to the second profile, profit.
Once you reboot you should see the app in the second profile. In my experience the app does not use the data from the main profile so your game scores etc are safe.
Let me know if this works for you.
I just searched a way for sharing an installed app to my kids profile without google account and found the /data/system/users/##/package-restictions.xml file, too. I noticed if an app is installed in the profile, then there is no entry for this app in this file.
So simply deleting the whole line, e.g.
<pkg name="com.rovio.angrybirds" inst="false" />
and rebooting works. The app is now installed

Glad it worked for you. I will have to try it again as it didnt work when I did it the first time.
I suspect that you could disable the play store by setting <pkg name="com.android.vending" enabled="1"> to <pkg name="com.android.vending" inst="false ">
This could easily be incorporated into a ROM by one of our talented developers. If I had any idea how i would give it a try.

In my case I don't plan on allowing an Google account to be added to the second user. The way I see it is if its already on my device its ok. Just like other profiles on my computer can access my music and some applications. I think its more a matter of morality that legality. I don't think you would ever be busted for it.
Yeah, but i think that Google app are allowed/linked per account, isnt?

Well, Google has no problem with us tagging our account to a new user account to obtain apps so I don't see any problem with having the apps there without the tagged account.
As said, this is our device. It should be our choice which of our paid apps another user has access to on our own device.
I'd say that Google just hasn't thought it out too good.

I think Google thought it out very well, and the provided implementation works great for the device owners.
I really can't think of any other implementation that would work out as well for my daughter and me sharing one device.
Is the goal to avoid the cost of a 2nd copy of the app, or avoiding the need for a second account? Or for some reason I'm missing?

Nexus 7
Clean ROM 3.0 - Leankernel 0.8.x
Certainly the goal for me was to provide a limited subset of my total apps to my daughter, and to keep her GMail / Facebook / etc accounts
separate from mine. I hated her logging me out every time she used my tablet...
When I heard about multiple profiles in 4.2, I about shat a brick. "How cool! I don't share my Nexus 7 with my family members, but I could totally set up my tablet to have different types of interfaces for different situations! I could have one profile dedicated to operation within my car in landscape mode, and another profile for general use... hell, I could have a profile that creates a 'faux PC UI' so I can get some work done in KingSoft!"
Nope. No app sharing. I can't help but feel that Google tacked this on as a last-minute thing--in fact, the whole of 4.2 feels very "last minute" since all they really added was **** that you could already get baked into other really popular ROMs like notification bar widgets. And even then, they only functioned as links to my settings (or, since I'm on the wonderfully buggy 4.2, the bluetooth button functioned as an annoyance that reminded me to restart my device if I wanted to turn bluetooth off). I've been pretty disappointed with Google lately: the Nexus Q went nowhere fast, the Nexus 4 launch was abysmal, 4.2 had some awful bugs and it detracted from the smoothness of the 4.1, and even 4.2.1 has its share of bugs.
Well, thanks to this thread, I can at least get more out of my N7 in my car and in other situations that require me to have the tablet UI function slightly differently.
It would be quite easy to whip up an app that notified the user an app was installed and to make those modifications to the xml file (for rooted devices).
Is that something people would be interested in?
e.g. Install app, once installed, a notification window shows asking if you would like this app to be enabled for all users.
Let me know, I could prob do this tonight (or on the weekend if I run out of time).

An app would be great. I think most people don't like digging through the files on their device for fear of messing something up.
I think it would be better if the user had to initialize the app instead of it being automatic. A list of installed apps like in the drawer groups part of nova launcher (see screenshot) that you could check or un-check if you wanted them available to the other users would be nice. It's up to you though. I'm glad you are interested in though. I think many will benefit from this.

I'm glad this has helped you. Though, if I understand you correctly, I think it would be easier for you to add your gmail account to each of your profiles as you will be the only one using them. This is more for those that want a guest account for their kids or friends.

How is this a scam? I've ordered a lot from these guys and never had one issue... It's like order from China but with faster shipping
they called from bank and told me that many customers lost their money so they are blocking cards before purchase on tmart.com. Its funny because i ordered many items from similar sites (ali, dx etc) without any problem and now they blocked my card for 0.99$ :silly:

hmmm I assumed they would provide the app name with the item... I would try to see if the pressy app would work cuz that would be a win:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pressy.app&hl=en
If not I may contact their support to find out more details. I don't have mine yet.
EDIT I see that you need a code for pressy. SO what about these apps:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.helloklick.android&hl=en

Not quite sure why there's three as the links won't load for me.

The first link posted here, "Hello Klick" is the same one posted on their site first, so I would try that one.
The button works out of the box for playing pausing music.
Works for the camera app for taking pictures on a triple tap.
I've found I had to have the Pressy App installed and set it as the default search, which requires Disabling the "Google Search" feature (weird). Once Pressy was installed, my audio returns to normal operation. Because out of the box, all audio is routed to headphones. So I downloaded and installed Pressy, went through the initial setup up to the point where it is asking for a registration key. Then I reset my phone. From then on, it seemed to be functioning better.
I've gotten a few little apps to register the button press and assign an action, but it seems they conflict with Pressy.
I haven't really played with it much. I'll try those apps linked and report back any findings.
UPDATE:
Ok KLICK works pretty good. I found a good slow solid key press is really required for it to pick it up. Klick App also has to be manually running and doesn't start on startup automatically. There is also an icon in the Status Bar.
I have Single Click = Flash Light
Double Click = Camera
Triple Click = Pandora
When running Klick, it seems to work well. The Camera app will launch on a double tap and then the FIRST (only) tap will take a picture. Sequential taps don't do anything. UPDATE, seems just tapping the button will keep launching the camera app and keep taking pictures. I don't know what its really doing but I have to back out of the camera a few times. Occasionally I get a popup saying it cant launch the camera app. I wonder if the camera app is being opened within the Klick app.
When Klick is NOT running, single taps start playing my local music / pause local music.
Seems to want to still conflict with stock android controls. Occasionally the volume slider will pop up and will try to bounce up or down a notch.
All of the actions work while the phone screen is off. So right out of your pocket, you can launch stuff without unlocking first.
I wonder if we can just install Klick, set it up but delete all button assignments, hide the app, then use another Button Programmer that works better.
What ROM are you guys using to get this working? I can not get it working on Mahdi ROM

Mine iKey came yesterday. For $1.50 incl. shipping I just couldn't resist I've played with it a little bit and then left it. I've actually ordered it for the ridiculous low price. I don't think I will use it soon

Info from Headset Button Controller author Christoph Kober:
"I just released a new version of Headset Button Controller to google play. The version 7.6 includes the pressy mode (version 7.5, which I released yesterday contained a bug). (...) As I said I don´t wont to implement such a hack for long click.
Showing a different profile icon depending on the selected profile makes sense. I will put in on my backlog ..."

For me with this app most important things are Tasker support and all apps, shortcuts available to chose as click action.

Hey all,
Per the Google IO announcement this week, it sounds like there's a beta apk floating around that will support native chromecast mirroring from Android 4.4.x devices.
Does anyone have a link to share so we can check it out?
Thanks!

So what is the OP looking for, now I'm curious. I saw during the I/O presentation them using an updated Chromecast app for Android to initiate mirroring so what's the deal. They said it was hardware dependent and required updated google play services and these forums said the mirroring app has to be whitelisted. I'm still unclear about whether other devices will work that weren't listed during the presentation.

How it essentially breaks down is this...
"Brute force" things and send a series of stills. This in theory should work on any Android device with the necessary Google Play Services framework to communicate with Chromecast, but performance will be highly dependent on CPU speed. This is similar to how simple VNC works, without the control part, and I believe this is what mirror4cast does.
Use system-level hooks to "patch into" the display pipeline - this should be more efficient than screen-scraping and should allow for better performance, especially paired with an intelligent client-end that can just update changes, rather than the whole screen. I believe Koush's mirror app does this. This is similar to how Remote Desktop works for Windows. Google probably is doing this.
Use hardware acceleration to offload compression from the CPU, providing both much better performance and less latency. This is similar to how intelligent players like MX Player use hardware-optimized codecs, though they use them for decoding, whereas mirroring would require encoding. I believe Koush's mirror app does this also. Google might/should be doing this.
Use some magic kernel-exposed functionality to offload compression from the CPU. Google might/should be doing this.
Ideally you'd do 2, 3 and 4 for the best optimization, they key point being to get the best mirroring experience you want to load the CPU the least, otherwise the overall UI experience becomes choppy, not to mention the mirroring itself.
But of course 3 and 4 constrain your supported hardware.
Miracast works on more devices because it's less constrained by overall network latency and stuff since it's WiFi Direct rather than going through an AP. Google's new "don't have to be on the same WiFi network" feature may use the same concept.
In fact, one of my Chromecasts once got into a mode where it was both broadcasting its own SSID and connected to its configured network - in other words, it was being both a WiFi AP and a client simultaneously. I don't know how or why it happened, but it was pretty cool (yes, I did test connectivity from both sides, and it seemed to work). Never got it to happen after that one time though.
As for devices that weren't mentioned... Likely they'll test/qualify other devices as time goes on, but I wouldn't hold my breath on older devices as they likely lack the required CPU power and/or hardware acceleration that is necessary.
The Chromecast app would be added to the whitelist and I suspect the ability to trigger the mirroring will either be determined by the Play Services framework or the mirroring app if it stays a separate app.

Well the guy gave OP an app related to Android TV devices. But that's not what OP wanted. OP thinks mirroring is just an .apk away on his phone, it doesn't seem to be quite that simple. From the I/O announcement, it seems like there needs to be some kind of hardware acceleration going on that isn't available to all phones. Besides, what that other guy linked is a *receiver* not a mirrorer.
Hmm, I'm on stock rooted 4.4.4 and today when I was at my gf's house(she has a Chromecast), I noticed a "cast screen" toggle in my quick settings. Is that what the OP is looking for? If so, I think it'll just be rolling out slowly with the Chromecast app.

Just to note, it works natively on Nexus devices, but you will require 1.7 update for other devices.

Hooray!
I think this applies to all tablet models. I did a factory reset and wiped the cache, several times in a row last night, because I got sick of a few things and wanted to run a test.
I wanted to install IceBox Apps Freezer. You don't need root, so long as you set it to be 'Device Owner' using ADB shell:
Code:
adb shell dpm set-device-owner com.catchingnow.icebox/.receiver.DPMReceiver
The app says to remove all accounts associated with the device in order for that to work. On our tablets (all models) this isn't possible. So I had to find out a way that would clear all 'device owners.' Google itself is very specific about how this is to be done: Factory reset.
Caution: If provisioning has already started, affected devices must be factory reset first.

Since I did that, and didn't register the tablet with Amazon, Managed Provisioning shouldn't apply. However, I followed all the steps, made sure WiFi was and still is off and went into ADB and this is what I got in return:

Um what? Is that even legal?
I know this can be done via security settings, but maybe doing it through ADB has a better effect. I managed to get Ice Box to be an admin using adb. That's as far as I've been able to get so far.
I've tried moving the code around and I just don't understand how to elevate it to profile owner, then hopefully to device owner.
I have found the way to provisioning, but yeah...doesn't let me setup the device. I am trying to find a way to trigger it on the next reboot.
Code:
adb shell pm enable com.android.managedprovisioning
Error: java.lang.SecurityException: Permission Denial: attempt to change component state from pid=6012, uid=2000, package uid=32028
adb shell am start -n com.android.managedprovisioning/.DeviceOwnerProvisioningActivity
Starting: Intent { cmp=com.android.managedprovisioning/.DeviceOwnerProvisioningActivity }
That takes me to a screen with a briefcase and a spinning wheel under "Set up your device."
Oops! Couldn't set up your device. Contact your IT department.

Amazon uses an APK to provision devices before there is even an actual owner (see attachment). You can unzip it using WinRar or 7zip or root explorer. Everything it needs to tell you you don't actually own your tablet, is right there. What the hell did we purchase then? This cracked me up a bit. AVG says its malware.
Code:
com.android.managedprovisioning
So I was looking at my XT907 for some similar items. Only one: SelfProvisioningService.apk
I did a quick Google search and kept getting hits for Cisco Services. I unzipped the apk and it's a Motorola provisioning application. Google was useless. Nothing comes up on either of these "programs/apps". The only direct hit/connection I've found so far is the AVG reference. These flushable provisions are supposed to be proprietary software and they always update them. I'll assume they don't stay the same package names for too long and change so quick and often, most go unnoticed.
Here's the answer i haven't been able to find or get...who or what is DeviceOwner? To put it into perspective: there is a random guy walking around with a kickass cell phone that can literally flash a new DeviceOwner to any electronic device within that company. Who has this information? Can they still access it and at will? Please do comment as I would rather be totally wrong and paranoid, than thinking this guy or whatever can access my tablet at will, whenever he wants and can see or get whatever he wants.
Code:
com.motorola.service.selfprovisioning
there are no permissions to write or access much of anything, except wireless capabilities. The provisioning is usually flashed to devices enmass through the Nfc or Android Beam etc. It's like tap and pay and done. And it's usually by some service technician.

There are many practical reasons to disable/freeze apps on a rooted device. And yes, securing stable root is highly unlikely on FireOS v5 builds targeting older hardware architecture (SOCs) like that used on the HD 8.

HD 10 got root because it appears, in my opinion, Amazon threw either a badly patched or unpatched kernel into the HD 10. I don't think the dirty cow patch can be exploited on Android yet either. If so, there may not be a patch. The HD 10 can be rooted from At least 5.4.0.1 to the current build. It might be a flaw Amazon can't fix.

HD 10 uses a newer hardware architecture and different build of FireOS. Amazon left a few doors open which will almost certainly be addressed in future releases. Accept reality and move on. In the absence of an unlocked bootloader root access is becoming increasingly rare across all hardware. Bad for tinkers; good for the overwhelming majority of Android/FireOS users who don't have a clue how to properly secure their device. Not to mention Amazon who retains near complete control over the user experience (a.k.a. ecosystem portal). Don't like it? Buy a different gizmo. Likely at a much higher price point.
