Android 4.0.4 Not compatible with customizing? - Nexus S Themes and Apps

I've tried multiple ways of decompiling and recompiling the systemui.apk, framework-res.apk aswell as add in custom carrier logo and custom status bar background, all of these mods worked on 4.0.3 but are not working with android 4.0.4, any suggestions?

I would try updating sdk and grab the latest aapt.exe from platform-tools and place it in your apktool folder

I think I may have found a problem, fergie, in the SDK Manager, I only see SDK for Android 4.0.3, maybe they have not made an update because 4.0.4 has not been an official release???

patched apktool.jar
try this patched version of apktool.jar, this should help by decompiling and compiling some 403 and 404 version apk´s.

Appreciate this but the version of apktool.jar I was using works better (1.4.3), with the version you provided above gets errors like crazy when decompiling the systemui.apk, decompiling the framework-res.apk works fine, recompiling shows too many errors to count :/

There is a specific apktool for 4.0.4 systemui which the guy attached. Its a modded version and works perfectly. Myself and others are using it.

I found out what I was doing wrong!!! Sorry about this guys I guess when I am building the SystemUI.apk I didn't realize that you only had to use the command "apktool b SystemUI" and it would build the apk in the dist folder thanks a lot guys

[Q] Milestone2 2.3UI framework-res.apk

I just edit the framework-res.apk for my milestone2,
it have a black status bar now
but the text-color still black,I try deodex the services.odex ,edit it and smali
insert classes.dex into services.jar
adb push services.jar /system/framework
but it doesn't work... and cann't boot~~
what's the right way to deodex it?
I'm having problems deodexing too...
I used dsixda's Android Kitchen to deodex the framework from my system.img (created a blank boot.img to be able to load the files), but can't deodex android policy and service. They're the only two apks I can't deodex.
Someone could post a tutorial or already patched files.

Framework-res.apk won't compile

Hi everyone,
it's 3 days I'm trying to edit the framework-res.apk, but I can't make it work either with apkmanager (no errors shown) nor with apktool (here some exception errors). I've even tested the UOT Kitchen but when I flash the archive, it just doesn't run and get struck on the boot loop. Working on MoDaCo Fr16 beta3, any idea of what this could mean?
Thanks in advance,
Tiwiz
use a version 1.3.1 of APKtool instead of 1.3.2
I'll try and update the post if I succed or not

The problem already started on FR16 because it happened to me since FR16.
Dunno how to ask him, already posted on MoDaCo forum as well... trying to tweet him.
Btw, tried even with new apktool 1.4.1 but nothing, still struck on boot loop.
I'll attach my framework-res, in case someone finds out how to deal with it.

i tried with apkmanager 1.4.7. , also no success !
UOT kitchen the same ...
i can´t find out what´s wrong ...
folder names have changed (from drawable-hdpi-v4 to drawable-hdpi) but this can´t be the problem or ?
As a workaround, you can use themed framework-res.apk from FR14, it works for me on FR17 ...

Could you post a working framework-res.apk? I'd try to use it on the kitchen and see if it works. Tweeted to Paul twice about this bug, but no answer yet.

Tell me what modifications you want to apply and i'll upload the one i compiled. Then someone needs to test if it works cuz i dont have an o2x (maybe i will in the future)...

I'd just need a basic (LG version) framework-res.apk that surely works, but I can't find it anywhere... in case, I can test yours, if you like

Fix builded framework-res.apk
Hi guys,
I got same problem. I fix it by these steps after compiling with apktool 1.3.1 is done.
1. Open original framework-res.apk file in 7zip.
2. Open compiled version of framework-res.apk from dist folder in 7zip.
3. Drag & Drop META-INF and AndroidManifest.xml from original into compiled.
That's all. Now compiled version is fixed & signed. This extra step works for me.
Can't get it work... could you take a look to mine? I can't understand what's wrong with it :-S
I'll post both mine and the original apk from MoDaCo's Kitchen.

take this one, it works with UOT Kitchern and you can apply without bootloop in FR18

What worked for me is this:
Compile a theme using the upload of the framework-res.
Then when it is ready replace the update-binary, and insert the lge-res.apk in the same map as framework-res. Do this with a program like winrar.
It was a pain in the butt getting there for a newbie like me.
files you need are in this rar:

My theme as a example:

Compiling framework-res.apk using your method still gives me bootloops. So it doesn't really work.

[TOOL] [Updated 8/18/11!!] APK_Manager_4.9_Honeycomb_Edition

Just though I'd take the time to update apk_manager_4.9 and call it apk_manager_4.9_Honeycomb_Edition. I've modified a few tools inside apk manager to now work with honeycomb apk's. Hopefully this will come in handy for you all.
Credits:
All credits go to the prior developers of APK MANAGER 4.9 HERE. I just took the time to update it for Honeycomb. Please refer to this link for instructions as well.
Thanks to Daneshm90 for giving me the okay to release this version so hopefully all you themers/developers out there will take this and run with it.
Changelog:
aapt - (From updated SDK)
apktool - (From updated SDK & MAD Industries)
zipalign - (From updated SDK)
Here is the download
APK_Manager_4.9_Honeycomb_Edition

Mirror_2
MAC USERS:
Please click HERE for everything you need for APK Manager for a MAC courtesy of MAD Industries
Updated 08/18/11
Changelog:
Cleaned up script to and compile settings and systemui apks
Code:
echo Building Apk
IF EXIST "%~dp0place-apk-here-for-modding\%capp%" (del /Q "%~dp0place-apk-here-for-modding\%capp%")
java -Xmx%heapy%m -jar apktool.jar b -f "../projects/%capp%" "%~dp0place-apk-here-for-modding\%capp%"
if errorlevel 1 (
echo "An Error Occured, Please Check The Log (option 21)"
PAUSE
)
(Lines 489-495 if you're using Notepad++)
You can either re-download the APK-Manager_4.9_Honeycomb_Edition.zip from above or you can download the new Script.bat HERE
Just extract the Script.bat and replace the old one.
Some Extra Instructions:
To do this U MUST make a new folder in C:/users/<yourname>/ and call it apktool and a sub folder within it called framework. If you have this there already YOU ROCK!!
Mine reads:
Code:
C:/Users/Thomas/apktool/framework
Now within that framework folder you need a copy of a complete stock framework-res.apk and you need to rename it to 1.apk
You also need a copy of a complete stock twframework-res.apk and rename it 2.apk
So it should read:
Code:
C:/Users/<yourname>/apktool/framework/1.apk
and
Code:
C:/Users/<yourname>/apktool/framework/2.apk
Remember any apk you are attempting to decompile MUST BE COMPLETE STOCK to do so.
I have done all of this and tested over and over again and I am getting no errors whatsoever. If you do get some errors please make sure all your paths for SDK are setup correctly including setting a path for Java JDK as well.
PM me with any questions or concerns regarding all this. I will do my best to respond within a timely manner.

I was to early with that, it seems to ''shrink'' my framework-res.apk so I can't use it.
It was 6.506kb and after a decompile and than compile it is 4.082kb, no changes made.
I didn't see it yesterday and I ended reflashing my TF

Try after you select your project (Option 22) select (Option 19) Set your compression level and change it to 0.
That shouldn't shrink it at all.
Sorry about that let me know if that works as well so I can update OP
sorry man, it still shrinks my apk
Okay let me look into it. Sorry man.
Thanks man, should I upload my apk file so you can test it ?
yeah pm me with the link
Updated 8/18/2011
I've updated the OP a ton so please read away.
Well, that was easy
One small nitpick: What is the rationale behind overwriting the original files when compiling? Just curious.
And, for us antiquated old geezers building on something like a Windows Server 2003, framework-res.apk and twframework-res.apk should be present as
C:\Docume~1\<username>\apktool\framework\1.apk and 2.apk respectively.
Edit: Which sort of happens automagically, if you ...
java -jar other/apktool.jar if place-apk-here-for-modding/twframework-res.apk
... on that sort of platform.

It makes creating a theme fairly easy. It allows access to xml's, smali files(****ed up java files lawl!(i know what they are, i just like that version better)), and all the images in whatever apk you put in it. SO you can put in your new images, edit old images, edit xml files, edit smali files.

Need help by (de)compiling frameworkr-res.apk

hello
i cant figure out how to decompile and compile framework-res.apk from free optimus project nightly 6
i tried many versions of apktool and apkmanager some of them works if i change the version for compiling and decompiling and i have one version which is extra for ics and this works without changing
but if i include a framework-res.apk in the rom.zip which is successfully decompiled and compiled (without errors) the phone gets into a bootloop.
can anybody teach me how to do this correctly?
i already have tried to sign the apk and repackaged the whole rom

if i'm missing any software apktool won't compile without errors or it won't finally start cause it checks all needed sources before starting.

[Q] problem with recompiled SystemUI.apk

Hi there, I currently observe a strange issue with a recompiled SystemUI.apk. Following the guidelines here in the forum, I changed the value of the background colour of the status bar from solid grey to semitransparent black. When I add this recompiled SystemUI.apk to a zip file containing the META-INF folder created by some advanced developer, I can flash the new SystemUI.apk and the statusbar will be semitransparent black after flash and reboot. So far, so good.
Now I tried a bit more and modified eybee1970 stock deodexed ROM. I deleted bloatware, updated Philz new kernel image and added my previously created SystemUI.apk with the semitransparent statusbar. Now the trouble appears. After flashing and rebooting, the statusbar is comepletly off, not visible, no chance to get it back.
In ssummary: My SystemUI.apk flashed to an already running stock deodexed ROM works fine, the same SystemUI.apk implemented in the same stock deodexed ROM zip file results in a non-appearing statusbar.
Can anybody advise me what I am doing wrong? I have attached the SystemUI.apk below if helpful for anyone.
Additional info: I used apktool command line based, JB version is the XXLSZ.
Thx

Hi, I could not try the original one as this is ODEXed version. But meanwhile, after several hours of testing, I found my mistake not properly following guidelines and using APKtool. Now I have a good working SystemUI. Took only 3 hours to find...
So this threat can be closed, thx
