Messaging and MMS - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have noticed that the messages are only long 70 symbols compared to other phones that have 160 per message. And when I write a longer message it shows that is a MMS?
Can someone explain to me why is that, and do I get charged for a MMS message instead of normal one?
Thanks in advance!

If you get 70 characters instead of 160, it means you're using non-english characters. All letters with dots, circles, or any other diacritical marks count as a non-standard character and cause your text to fit only 70 characters.
Stock messaging app will convert long text messages to MMS, and for now - there is no way to prevent that. You can always use another app to text people.
And yes, you're being charged for a converted MMS message according to your carriers prices.
Solutions:
- Don't use language specific characters. Just standard english.
- Don't write texts longer than 3x160 ( or 3x70 )
- Use third-party messaging app if you want to avoid auto-converting.

Thanks but I am writing with the English alphabet and not using another language. Can you sugest some good texting app?

Block texts

So I have an immature, annoying coworker who always sends idiotic spam messages; is there any way to block these? I need to keep his number for work related calls, I just dont need foolish pictures sent to me. I'm just using the stock messaging app. Any advice is appreciated

If you download handcent you can just add him to blacklist.
Sprint has a place to block texts on their web site.

You can use SMS Filter, a free, 30 kb app and add his or her number. No more sms messages from that number as long as he's in that app's blacklist. You can use it with any SMS client; it is a system wide effect.
Awesome man, thanks for the heads up.

You can also send a text to 9999 to block. Its the same as logging into the sprint website to block.
Just send a text to 9999 with: Block phonenumber
ex: Block 5551112222 will block all texts from 5551112222. Allow 5551112222 will allow texts from the number again.

Character limits

Ok can anyone tell me if there is
A way to enter more characters in text boxes. Like *friendstream and Facebook apps that only allow you small amount of characters to be entered.

Wake on SMS Receipt

This question is quick, and it's strange that I haven't found an answer to it in my searches, but anyways:
How can I make my screen turn on, instead of just buttons (In Assonance ROM 5.2) when I receive a text message?
Regards
Smith
I don't use stock messaging stoop but it seems like I have read about people using an app called sms popup to activate screen when a text comes in....assuming of course you just want it to come on for a brief time.
3rd party messaging apps like handcent have this built in.

Problem with sending long texts?

Hi guys.
When I send long text messages, say 3x160 characters, it send the text as a multimedia message. This is highly annoying as I have unlimited texts on my tariff and I get charged for multimedia messages as its not included in my contract. Is there any way to solve with the default Galaxy S application?
Not too fond of Handscent and I just want something simple that works and I dont care too much for all the bangs and whistles of the Handscent app/alternatives.
Change rom dude, developers have noticed this and have hacked the mms app to allow users to have an unlimited amount of SMS pages without it automatically converting to mms, that's all I can advise bud, change rom

Is it possible to just replace the app with the modified version? I'm currently on stock odexed 2.3.4 (jvq)

[Q] My Note sent the contact vcf as MMS?

Hi All
I tried to send a contact detail from my note (2.3.6 official rom with root and Franco kernel #6) and it turned the sms to mms?!
I could be wrong, but think that's normal?
Text message is purely text whereas contact is text, image, ringtone etc etc...

I do not think so, since I did not notice that during my using to HTC Sensation, but will try with some other devices tomorrow.
A VCF won't fit in the 160 character limit of an SMS, it'll always send it as an MMS with the .VCF as a binary attachment.

It there any thing can be done to change that limit?
I think that text capacity. Although newer phones allow you to input more characters, they're actually sending out multiple texts. If you've got an old phone and receive a long text it's broken into multiple texts.

If you send a vcard from an HTC phone, and import to another phone manifacturers device, you will often see something in the "Extras/notes" window saying "HTC:;data-bla/bla-yay/I'm a HTC phone/yayy." Basically there can be anything in a vcard, even weird code each brand reads differently. So I think you sometimes would get a freaking long sms message, hence the vcard needs to be one file, not reassembled from small parts.
