Can I ask what was wrong with the guides already present and vertigo guide has all info needed. I welcome any attempt to simplify things but do we really need another thread like this. There is no lack of info on the XL as all that is needed is here. Many many people before have found all they needed so really don't understand. You seem to show a total lack of respect for all the good work that have gone on before you got here. If the guides here were not to your liking I am sure we could have updated. You come into a forum and open a thread at least acknowledge the efforts of others that were here before you. Alot of time and effort was spent getting things here off the ground and to disregard the recognised efforts here as you quite blatantly are is rude and bad form.

+1 I totally agree. All the information is available in mine and shingers tutorials and you've not linked or acknowledged them at all.

First of all, I made this guide because someone requested it. I also linked a lot of good working threads so I don't get why you think I am rude. I just put everything a noob needs in one guide with links to working guides so they don'T need to puzzle around a lot. Because I found it hard to find everything I needed.
I'm thankful to all the threads I have linked in this thread. AND I am not taking credit for the things I have linked. As I mentioned, the is no guide especially made for the Sensation XL for some things, and this guide I made is more based on that part and sharing the eu rom that is hard to find due to download rdstrictions.
So pardon me if I did not thanked the entire XDA.
In one of the linked guides they mention that they could make that guide thanks to vertigo, so that's good.
And again, I could not easily find everythin I needed and therefore I desided to share my experiance sfter getting a request to show the steps for noobs

Sorry for noy mentioning you in my thread as I haveread your thread and yes I see that you had most of these. But I find it still a little bit out of order. And I saw that you did not mention ICZ and as I said it was a request of a user to make this. It's in order and everything they need step by step. Your thread is good but to much text in my opinion. I have added one or two things in this one. Btw lots of your text is the same as text I have read in other guides and I did not see you mention them all. It might be that they copy paste it from you, I don't know.
But I am not trying to be rude or not mention related post, why would I not. I will add your guide at the top of this my yhread so users can deside for themselfs which one they need.

I think the problem is that you're just repeating everything that is in mine and shingers guides already....
I have mentioned the people who I needed to in my thread, basically shingers5 as he was the one who has done all the hard work and they are the only threads i copied from... and no its not out of order, its in the right order, with the exact steps you need to take to get a custom rom working, guaranteed!! The reason there is so much text is that I've tried to explain it as clearly as possible.
Anyway I'm not getting into an arguement about this, I've said what I needed too...

I put my device on the line to find all the things I posted. The sites you linked too got the info from here. Why not make a guide in simple terms as you said but with links to xda? HTC SENSATION XL
Special thanks to Vertigo
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466436Vertigo's guide
Vertigo's guide provides most or even all of this guide, I made this guide because it got requested and I mostly made it for sharing the RUU.exe EU and to put everything in order in my opinion.
UNLOCK BOOT LOADER / LOCK BOOT LOADER / ROOT / UNROOT / INSTALL CLOCKWORKMOD / TAKE BACKUP OF YOUR DEVICE WITH CWM / INSTALL ICE COLD ZOMBIE / RECOVER YOUR PREVIOUS ROM YOU HAD BACKED UP / INSTALL STOCK ROM
Some of these will just have a link to the proper thread, because the tutorials they provide helped me out and are perfect. I don't need to redo them.
So, let the game begin
I have the HTC Sensation XL!
I have searched and searched all over the internet and found some ways to do unlock and relock bootloader, root and unroot, and even found the RUU.exe for Europe and downloaded it before the sharing site locked EVERY shared files due to the activities of the internet restrictions.
So I am going to write all the steps for the HTC Sensation XL in ONE thread, because there is just not enough information that you can find easily for the HTC Sensation XL.
STEP ONE: UNLOCK BOOT LOADER
First of all, let's unlock your boot loader, this step is pretty easy because the website that provides you the unlock code also provides the steps you need to unlock your boot loader, after this re locking is even more simpler.
Just go to HTCDEV boot loader and follow the steps there to unlock your boot loader.
***WARRANTY issues if you do this step and any other step from here*** but you can re lock your boot loader and unroot your device to use your WARRANTY again.
STEP 2: LOCKING BOOT LOADER
You need ADB so follow these steps HERE
To lock your boot loader you definitely need to have a proper connection between your device and computer.
To re lock your boot loader you need to:
1. Turn off your phone
2. Take out your battery and put it back in
3. hold your volume down button and press the power button. (KEEP HOLDING YOUR VOLUME DOWN BUTTON) You will see a white screen with fastboot written on it.
4. Navigate with your volume up or down to fastboot and press the power button to select it.
5. Connect your device with your computer, you will see 'fastboot USB ....'
6. open the terminal in your computer and type in 'adb devices', you probably will see an empty list, no devices. Just follow step 7
7. type in 'fastboot oem lock' without quotes and your device is locked again, you will see relocked - you might see a warning under it but that's nothing, after rebooting the warning will go away.
8. I don't know why you can't see any devices connected when in fastboot USB mode but if you start up your phone and redo step 6. you will see your device.
STEP 3: UNROOT YOUR DEVICE
To unroot your device you will need to relock your boot loader. Follow STEP 2: LOCKING BOOT LOADER first
1. Download YOUR proper RUU.exe
Mine was:
RUU_Runnymede_HTC_Europe++_1.05.401.4_R2_Radio_20. 5101.30.0822_3822.10.10.12_M_release_223366_signed
LINK DIRECT DOWNLOAD
2. open RUU.exe and follow the onscreen steps to unroot your device and install stock rom.
STEP 4: INSTALL CLOCKWORKMOD
REMEMBER TO ALWAYS TAKE BACKUP FIRST BEFORE DOING ANYTHING ON YOUR DEVICE
you can take backups with CLOCKWORKMOD of your device, just do that so you can restore your device if you don't like other roms or need a recovery
Requirements:
1. An HTC Sensation XL with an unlocked bootloader. You can do that via the HTCDEV website.
2. ADB installed on your system. See our guide on what is ADB and how to install it.
3. CWM based recovery for Sensation XL.
HERE
*** I JUST USED THE ABOVE 3 STEPS ON HIS TUTORIAL ***
But you can use whatever you like
Here are two other pages which provide steps to install ClockWorkMod
HERE
and HERE
Remember that the magnifying glass on your HTC S.XL is used as ENTER/SELECT in CWM
STEP 5: INSTALL ICE COLD SANDWICH
Awesome thread here about the ICE COLD SANDWICH
Go to the 'How to install' part on his thread.
STEP 6: BACKUP OR RESTORE YOUR PREVIOUS ROM
Other threads
HERE
and HERE
these steps are the same on HTC Sensation XL as far as I know
To recover your previous rom on your device you just need to go where you also backed up your device and hit on recover and select the recovered rom. This all can be found if you
1. Turn off device
2. Take out battery and put it back in
3. Hold volume down and press on power
4. Use volume down to slide to recovery and press on power to select it
5. There you can find CWM recovery where you can backup or restore your device
( WHEN YOU SELECT BACKUP OR RESTORE YOUR DEVICES ACTS LIKE IT'S STUCK, DON'T BE FOOLED. IT IS DOING IT'S JOB, JUST BE PATIENCE )

Look here pal, for example if you write russian and someone else writes it in english and again someone else writes it in plain english so noobs can understand, I will firstly link yhr plain english ofcourse, because I don't see the point to post all the links. And I don't know all the origins and my thread is simply to have all the guides that helped me out. So stop whining about no respect and being rude if it's not about being the populair one. Listen here, there are no bad links because linking other than XDA is alowed. I am not going to change the links because of your monopoly acts. I FIND THOSE GUIDEZ BETTER EXPLAINED and if I want to share those you should not block it. Even if you were the first with that information, that does not matter to me because I am sharing MY OWN EXPERIANCE. So let people deside for them selfs whiv one they want to read and use and stop telling people which guide they need to link in their thread. It's a forum and I find my thread easy short and powerful.
Whay the use of it if I would link your post?? Than it would become the same old confusing long post. I only share the guides that worked for me.

Well I think if you want the forum works as you want, we must establish rules, and if you want xda guard its independence from the other site must all admit that even we often lack the material, I give you an example: I wanted to flash a Ruu europe, but I have not managed to find a link that works.
and if you say you have already explained the method to pass a Ruu sorry but this is not enough for me, I need to know the exact reasons why I can not flash my phone as I want.
this is how you learn and that's how we advance.

Then search it. There are guides all over xda and the net with the codes for RUU fails. Or post a question.
Really what should have happened here is some one to ask shingers5 and/or vertigo to update their threads if this was needed. I have to agree and think that in order for anyone to have rooted there phone and put a custom ROM on it that you would have had to follow shingers5 and vertigo's guides at least.
Show a little respect and show credit where it is due. You have even admitted that this is just a simplified version of vertigos work.
Other than that I think that what you attempted to do here was good, perhaps just not approached in the correct way.
My tupence added.

I have just "become a noob" and
have unlocked and relocked my b00tl0ader,
tried to flash Ice Cold Sandwich but it wouldnt,
then backed up my rom and tried to flash my backup,
but none of this happened as i got error codes,

So i threw my phone in the bin
and then set the bin on fire with some petrol which i had to queue up for... Stupid Petrol strike....

[Rum Float] First flash ever, a bit nervous

I'd like to flash my Vivid with the new Rum Float ROM and from what I gather; now that a RUU is available it should be fairly easy. I.bought the phone last Thursday and haven't had a chance to grab a SD card. I just want to make sure that I fully understand the process involved. I've read a number of posts here at XDA and elsewhere but I still have a few questions to make sure my knowledge is solid and I don't end up with an HTC paperweight! A) Will the Android market will have a record of what I have already dl'd so I can dl it again? B) Is using the RUU executable fairly simple? Should I do the BL UL before I restore?(I would like root, so I'm assuming that this is one of the first steps!) C) Is it a simple follow the instructions sort of thing with the RUU? D) Will "frigid's" "supertool" method to get root work in this instance or do I need to use CWM? E) I'm using an AT&T Vivid could somebody give me a simple step by step(not in detail, but if you could that would be great!) Such as "1- Do BL UL, 2- Run supertool for root, 3 - Run RUU, etc, etc, etc
Also there appears to be a sense and a NONSense version of the ROM, are they both included in the RUU exe file? And for the NONSense version will there be any difference in stability, performance, you acceleration, etc?
Thanks for any info in advanced!

The RUU DOES NOT CONTAIN MY ROM. It is an official tool used by HTC for upgrading and returning to stock.
Android market will keep tabs on purchased apps. It will not keep track of free apps.
You need an sdcard to keep safe.
The RUU is easy to run. Its just an exe. Follow the on-screen prompts.
I don't know what you are trying to restore but it would appear you have your terminology and methods all mixed up.
RUU will get you a stock ics. And it will wipe your apps and settings. It will act like a phone you just pulled out of the box with ics.
In order to run rum float (or any aftermarket rom) you need to unlock your bootloader. Rooting has nothing to do with it. Unlock bl then flash recovery on then flash rom and kernel.
Your steps as you perceive them are slightly off. I don't recommend you do anything to your phone right now.
After you complete the RUU you'd have to go to htc.dev and unlock your bootloader. After you can fastboot flash a recovery and CWM with root. After that's complete you can flash a rom of your choice. I'd get familiar with using fastboot commands in ADB (command prompt). I guess you can use the supertool to root but it isn't necessary really a matter of preference. Check out the superguide. Maybe PG or someone can update it with specific steps if you are using the RUU but the process is the same. It starts with the unlocking the bootloader. Definitely pick up an SD card!
Thanks for the quick replies and the clarification. I think I get it now, I would do the following to get to a rooted custom ICS Rom: Unlock the boot loader, root and run titanium backup to save my apps(using an ad card), run the RUU and get to stock HTC ics, copy ROM to sd card, re-root, download and run CWM, root again and restore apps with titanium backup, enjoy!
The only things that may be a bit off in that process is running the RUU as I don't need that to just flash a custom ROM, assuming said ROM includes the ICS kernel. If did have to use the RUU would I have to re-root to run cwm? Also the actual ROM itself is installed from HBoot, correct?
Sorry if these sound like dumb questions, I'm just new at this. I really appreciate the replies. I'm sure I will pick this up fairly quickly as I have years of linux & OS X command line experience and am well versed with c. It's just kind of information overload on this board as there is such a wealth and variety of info here!
Thanks again,
-MeeGz-
So you can run the ruu.exe even if you are rooted, unlocked bootloader, on att stock? Or do you have have to relock bootloader to proceed with the ruu?
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using XDA
RUU is for stock roms IIRC. If you are rooted and already unlocked I'd use the original method PG and Thecubed created.
back on my computer for a little better explanation.
the RUU or the methods that thecubed and i have laid out will get you the necessary HBOOT/RADIO/etc that you will need to flash a custom ICS rom
either method will get you the same thing....an updated HBOOT and ICS
if you run the bootloader unlock tool from htcdev, YOU WILL LOSE ALL YOUR SETTINGS! it will wipe the device like its brand new......do NOT include this in your dreams of getting backups prior to flashing a custom rom....
please just read through the posts and understand what is going on.
in order for ICS to happen on your vivid you need the new HBOOT, Radio, and various other components that the RUU/PH39IMG contain
there are 3 different roads you can follow to get there, the EASIEST being just run the RUU (WHICH WILL ALSO WIPE SETTINGS!), afterwards, reboot to bootloader, unlock bootloader, reboot to fastboot, fastboot flash the boot.img and the recovery.img of your choice on (limited on boot.img's at the moment, better use the one from the rom), reboot to recovery and flash the rom
the other methods imply you understand somewhat how the process works.
relock bootloader (if unlocked), run PH39IMG install, unlock bootloader, fastboot flash recovery and boot.img, reboot to recovery and flash rom.....
if you wrap your head around HOW it works, its all really simple....so the first step is understanding HOW it works, not blindly following some tutorial or walkthrough.
please try to LEARN and UNDERSTAND what it is you are doing....
PS. you have involved ROOTING too many times in your post...... the rom is already ROOTED, you dont have to ROOT to unlock, flash rom or anything....ROOTING is only applicable INSIDE the booted OPERATING SYSTEM, and has nothing to do with recovery/bootloader
i feel i need to apologize to the board here.
frustrations were not directed at the OP of this thread, just in general....
i have been inundated with PM's and seeing the same barrage of questions for the last few days on the forum....
i can understand everyone's excitement...hell i was excited to get this too.
but you all need to read, and try to take it all in before attempting anything. sometimes those of us that understand whats going on, dont explain in a whole lot of detail, because we take the knowledge for granted, and assume if you are on this site, you are here to learn. it is frustrating to see the same questions pop up on nearly an hourly basis...
all i ask is that you take forth the effort to learn how these tools of ours work and understand that a lot of us working on things like this rely on you guys to assist each other in the process. that leaves us more time to deal with what we need to deal with and try and fix and squash bugs/processes/etc.
in return i apologize if i seem on edge the last couple of days...its because i am. if you can imagine one question multiplied by a hundred.....and having people freaking out about them 'bricking'.....after being warned its possible, but unlikely. i think most of these 'bricks' are salvageable and just require someone that understands how they work.
sorry to seem like an ass, but mainly its because i am an ass, and i have a hard time being nice most of the time.
Thanks pirateghost. I understand how to do the other methods but wanted to use something less complicated with less risk for user error. I read and read everything that is posted on the forums. I try not to ask a question unless I am not understanding what has been posted. Thanks for your patience and understanding.

PG, so im pretty sure i "bricked" it lol. im not upset as it was entirely my fault, just wondering if there is any way to get this mother to turn on? i know that when i plug it into the computer it recognizes it but not as anything i have seen lol..if i can find the correct drivers can this be reversed?
Thanks
Thanks to PG for everything and the instructions. I thought I had bricked my phone, but theCube was able to help me on IRC, which is where I suggest anybody go for real-time assistance.
This could off all been avoided with step by step Detail instruction. Why? Well example , I don't follow this forum at all never had an HTC phone but my wife's phone the vivid. All my phone has been Nexus and the galaxy line from Samsung, things over there are a bit different. All I did was flash the ph.img and then after not seen the device reboot I wipe/factory reset and all when to hell from there. Couldn't unlock the bootloader or reboot the phone. How could this happen? Assuming that people should know the basic is wrong. I'm not in any way blaming anyone I did this own my on risk but at the same time I'm super mad had to buy a new phone. As a user, you should understand the risks/benefits of the things you download. The devs are under no obligation to keep you from bricking your phone, and to be fair, most everything is covered in the Superguide and the various ROM threads. Even if someone were to post a file called NOT_A_VIRUS.EXE and you downloaded it and it wiped your computer when you ran it, the responsibility is squarely on your shoulders.
As far as I remember, there is no dev/user contract and they're not getting paid for any of this.

i gave instructions based on how *I* got it to work and duplicated the procedure several times. so its MY responsibility to try and find a way to brick my phone for you?
an RUU cant brick your phone.....however, being a retard can.
this is the type of attitude i would expect my boss to have, if i screwed up a project....but alas, i am here out of my own free will.....

I totally 100% agree with you. If you HAVE taken the time to read and are still a bit confused, ask! For me I'm not even a week into this platform and I WILL NOT do anything that I don't entirely understand. The problem with android, if you could even call it a problem, is that there is such a huge variety of handsets and a big variety methods for doing this, that, and the other thing. It basically results in a non-linear process to get from point A to point B. It's imperative to understand the basic proceedures. If you were here since the G1, great, you've been able to.follow things from the start. I've used iOS for years, and I still love it btw.(only jailbroken of course!) I'll probably buy an iPad 3! The software is integrated with the hardware amazingly well, battery life is phenomenal, and ONCE JAILBROKEN, iOS is an excellent platform. Sure the "spec numbers" may not be as high but it boils down to.performance. That has always been great for me, obviously battery life is exceptional on apple devices as well. I'm hoping with a rooted ICS Rom there won't be cpu-time hogging processes and ill be able to adjust other things accordingly to get somewhat better battery life. I really wish each OEM would take the time to optimize the SW that they're using to the HW that they're selling. B/C from what I've seen the "Nexus" devices generally perform extremely well, even.against higher spec'd devices. So far I'm loving Android and my Vivid. I love the freedom that I get even on a non-rooted device! It's an excellent platform. Flexible, dynamic, and personal. Customization is there from the get-go. There are a million different things that one could do, even while staying un-rooted. The only reason that I've waited so long to get on board with android is ibwas waiting for it to grow and mature, if I could have a device that tri-booted Android, iOS, and WebOS I'd be a very happy person. I love using multiple platforms.
PG - I'm sorry if I bothered you, thanks for the great info though!
I think knowledge-wise I'm at a point where I'm not going to brick my phone. Wish me luck!

You know, its users like you that get Devs frustrated and not want to share the work that they have accomplished. XDA is a site for Devs, its not a WalMart that people can stop by and expect to be spoonfed and be on their merry way. Pirateghost is a very talented Dev who wanted to share something with this community, and instead of saying "thank you" you decide to look a the glass as half empty instead of half full and EXPECT MORE from him?
Reading your post, it tells me that you dont frequent the HTC forums at all, and instead of reading up, you just decided to flash. Just because it didnt go as smoothly as you thought it would is NO REASON to tell a Dev that they needed to do more. That part lays on you.
Next time you decide to tell a Dev that "they need to do more" I think you need to do more reading so it prevents you from having to buy a new phone. If it dosent make sense to you or you dont think theres enough documentation/step-by-step instructions YOU HAVE THE POWER TO SAY NO AND NOT FLASH IT.
Uh, there's a reason every single solitary dev puts a disclaimer on their ROM threads. Their work, if directions are not followed to the letter can turn your device into a +/- 200$ paperweight. I've been lurking around these forums for a hot minute, rarely post ( not an ounce of dev skill being the main reason), and really, when's the last time a dev didn't post at least semi detailed instructions to go along with his/her OP.
@pirateghost- bought a vivid literally 12 hours ago, got home, saw your thread, FOLLOWED THE DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY, and now have ICS on my device. Just wanted to say thanks.
And now for the most epic noob question of all time. Wth is RUU? I'm very familiar with flashing roms, cam, tibu, etc from my days on the sgsII SR forums. So most if not all HTC terminology is new to me.

I liked sense but want vanilla-android. Thanks again for your helpful post. I'm not asking if you know an ETA or anything like that, just from your experience.

Really don't know that info, however if you want to get root but don't want to wait there are other ways to do it. Let me know if you are interested and I will post them up. Consider though it will take longer than it would using the toolkit.
megatronisabeast
I'll try pretty much anything. I've rooted several devices, so findind a new way for another one won't hurt. Only thing that I really would like to do is avoid making a gold card, but if you have to do that I think I will wait for the toolkit. Thanks!! Do you know if it's possible to temp root, flash a kernal with cwm, and then flash a rom?
Here is what you need to do to root your phone, etc.
First thing is to download android sdk:
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
It will allow you to send files to your phone from your computer-no s-off so can't flash kernel in recovery only fastboot.
While that is downloading if you haven't already you need to unlock boot loader by going to:
http://htcdev.com/
Don't forget to keep the unlock code so if you need to relock your boot loader.
Next, it sounds like you want to flash a custom rom. If so the best one in my opinion is found here:
http://www.wcxxperia-nce.com/index.php
You have to register to see the vivid section.
Once there you will download the zip file, put a copy on your phone, the other copy unzip and place the boot.img and wcx recovery in the same folder that you have the fast boot file that you downloaded earlier from sdk.
Then you put your phone into hboot mode, plug it in to usb port, make sure on phone screen is says fast boot usb in red.
Then open command prompt in your folder with fast boot by clicking shift and the right mouse button.
Type in these commands:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash recovery wcxrecovery.img
After those steps power down phone, unplug from computer, return to hboot, click on recovery, then flash the zip file that you placed on there earlier.
That's it, you got it root and all.
Also if you do use his rom, restart phone 3 times to settle phone in and cycle battery 3 times to make sure everything is working correctly.
Here is a video if you feel overwhelmed to help guide you brought to you by randong!

We just need S-OFF so we can simplify this entire thing by using CWM. It's so much easier being able to flash a scripted .zip package in there than dealing with fast boot.

I've never done it myself but it shouldn't be that difficult. I think I'm just spoiled coming from the Inspire - it was rooted, S-OFF'd, and had a few custom ROMs up the within a couple days of its launch. The level of development for that device was extreme from the very beginning.
Sent from my HTC Vivid
True, I still have an Inspire and the development is still booming. I personally just wish HTC would have made the Vivid as dependable as the Inspire, bc my Vivid has all sorts of problems. Turns off randomly, and each time when it turns back on it says "upgrading android" and then it optimizes the apps for ICS. Most of the time it won't flip my pictures(rotate)<--yes auto rotate is on...but all in all HTC went down in quality with the Vivid. Personally this is why I want to root, that way I don't have to worry with HTC screwing up the update.
it does work but i have found that busybox isnt installed/installed correctly and have had to install it from the market for titanium backup to recognize my root.

ALL SHOULD SEE THIS FIRST PLEASE ....
*** unlocking bootloader from HTCDEV site is highly recommended for a permanent root solution***
1. enable usb debugging from settings - applications - development
2. plug phone to pc via usb cable - charge only
3. open extracted zip folder and click runme. thats all. (if experience any daemon hanging problems pls install htc sync and plug in phone so drivers are installed. once done delete htc sync and repeat root procedure)
PC will open a cmd screen with prompts that you need to follow. app does rest
4. After root is complete pls visit market and update SU app. once done root will be fully functional and eliminate any future FCs
5. Also as an extra tip you can install SU UPDATE fixer from market to update your binaries to 3.0
Software version 1.24.709.2 doesn't seem to be rootable via this method. Please try flashing another ruu from runnymede rom thread then attempt root again
Added V4 of the Doomlord Exploit as may be why XL was rooted without bootloader being unlocked.
well i relocked my bootloader and flashed ruu 1.05.404 then I used Doolord V4 to root my phone. This was succesful in permanently rooting my phone without unlocking my bootloader. This was not possible with V2 so if anyone wants to root without unlocking bootloader this is now possible using V4 of the Doomlord Exploit attached below. PLEASE NOTE THAT STILL NEED TO UNLOCK BOOTLOADER TO FLASH CUSTOM ROMS AND RECOVERY
If i Repeated ANY OF THE STEP BELOW WHICH I MENTIONED ABOVE PLEASE SEE IT THOROUGHLY FIRST THEN MOVE AHEAD
REST, SIT DOWN GRAB A COFFEE AND Read IT CAREFULLY.

Please see the link if you like to ...

.................................................
1. To Unlock BOOTLOADER
1.1 You Need to Unlock the BOOTLOADER
(You can get permanant root but you won't be able to put a custom rom on your phone, so if you only want root you don't need to unlock bootloader. You will need to use v4 from this post... http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1341127 ... Cheers Shingers)
To do This,You Need to go to www.htcdev.com to unlock it.
1.2 Register An acoount there and when its time to select your device scroll to the bottom and select 'All Other Supported Devices'.
1.3 Then you will get the warning boxes pop up asking you if you're sure you want to do it then saying you could void your warranty as well. Once you've clicked ok on those you'll be through to the instructions on how to unlock your bootloader.
Remember how to get your phone into fastboot from the instructions because you will need to do it again, or if anything goes wrong.
But if you follow the instructions properly nothing should go wrong... Its been tried and tested by lots of people...
And just incase you don't remember how to do it... Take battery out and pop it back in, then press volume down and power button together until you see the white bootloader screen and then press the power button to get into fastboot.
If You Are Facing Problem In 1 Part Only Grab Your Coffee and Watch Pogo
2.Then once you have that done you will need to get root and for that you will need to follow shingers5 tutorial below...
Get the file for rooting here DooMLoRD_v2_ROOT-zergRush-busybox-su.zip
1. enable usb debugging from settings - applications - development
2. plug phone to pc via usb cable - charge only
3. open extracted zip folder and click runme. thats all. (if experience any daemon hanging problems pls install htc sync and plug in phone so drivers are installed. once done delete htc sync and repeat root procedure) PC will open a cmd screen with prompts that you need to follow. The app does rest... So its nice and easy
4. After root is complete pls visit market and update SU app. once done root will be fully functional and eliminate any future FCs
5. Also as an extra tip you can install SU UPDATE fixer from market to update your binaries to 3.0
All Done
Note. If you're struggling with the above instructions, remember that you will need to un-install HTCsync because it interferes with fastboot and rooting...
NOW YOUR PHONE IS ROOTED
3.Then once you're rooted you will need to put CWM (Clockwork Mod) recovery on in order for you to be able to back up your phone and flash custom roms. The custom recovery by Paul O'Brien is the best one to use and is available to download here...
http://android.modaco.com/topic/3489...odaco-edition/
You will need your phone in fastboot again and you will need to find the fastboot folder on your PC (Windows). When you're in the fastboot folder press the left shift button and right click on the mouse and select open command prompt here. Make sure your phone is connected to the PC and is in fastboot. Also make sure that the recovery.img file that you downloaded from MoDaCo is in the fastboot folder too. Get back to the command promt window and type the following
fastboot flash recovery r1-recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.7-modaco-runnymede.img (Tip: once you get to the r1 bit just hit tab and it will auto complete the rest of the line)
If you can't get the Paul O'Brien recovery installed (apparantly not everyone can) try the Older recovery from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1348693
Now You Have Got Root And CWM
A lot of people who have come this far will want to put a custom rom on... unfortunately its not completely straight forward. But again there is a way round round it and you should only need to do it once, when you're coming from a stock rom.
4.1. You cant just flash a custom rom on this phone, firstly you will need the 'Chinese rom' which is here
http://hotfile.com/dl/148413075/8990...01713.zip.html and make sure it is on the SDcard part of your phones memory. Make sure it on the root of the SDcard because it will be easier to find later. Then you will need this rom RCMix3d Runny XL rom from here
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/56143145/RCM...ny_XL_v1.2.zip (thanks to benjamin.j.goodwin) and make sure that is on the SDcard too with the other rom
2. Then you will need to download this file from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...7&postcount=18 it is the 'Chinese boot.img' and will need flashing from fastboot again. So put the phone in fastboot and extract the 'boot.img' from the 'boot.rar' file and put it in the fastboot folder on the PC. Open the command prompt again and type this... fastboot flash boot boot.img ... This should only need doing once if you're coming from a stock rom.
3. Once you've done that you will need to get into recovery. From fastboot select bootloader and then look for recovery, it should be under fastboot if its worked correctly. Select that and the phone should then reboot and go into 'CWM' (recovery). Once there you will need to use the volume keys and power button just like when you were in bootloader. Go down and select 'Factory Reset/Data Wipe' and select that, the select yes on following screen. This will take a few mins (don't worry if it looks like its not doing anything). After that go down to 'Wipe Cache' and select that. and then go down to 'Advanced' select that and on the following screen select 'Wipe Dalvik Cache'.
4. Once thats all done you will need to select 'Install Zip File from SDcard' and then you will get another screen where you go to 'choose zip from SDcard' and the you will see all the contents of your SDcard, scroll down till you can select the Chinese rom you put on earlier (remember what it was called) and then select yes to install it. Sit back and wait another few minutes. Once its done select the 'reboot now'. The phone will then reboot again and start to load the new rom up. This will take a while so don't worry. Now once the phone has started you should get the start up wizard and you will just need to skip through it (don't worry about it being all in chinese... its in english). Not everyone needs to install the Chinese rom, some people can just go straight to the RCMix3d rom and install that, but it doesn't work for everyone, so I'm putting this in because it always works when you do it this way. Installing the Chinese rom should only need doing once if you're coming from a stock rom.
5. Boot into recovery again and goto 'Factory Reset/Data wipe', then 'Wipe Cache', then 'Advanced' and 'Wipe Dalvik Cache' and then go back to main screen and select 'Install Zip From SDcard' and then select 'RCMix3d zip' file and install that. Once thats done select Reboot Now and wait while phone boots up again... and VOILA you now have a custom rom Installed.
6. You could either leave that rom on (its a very good rom) or choose to install one of the other custom roms, read through the first few posts of each rom and decide from there whether you want to install that particular rom, or do what I did and install everyone and see which you like best .

These Are Enough As you Are Not drinking Your Coffee
Just In case If you Want to Come back to your Stock Rom
You will need to make sure phone is in fastboot and then get command prompt up in fastboot folder and type this...
fastboot oem lock
That will relock the bootloader so that you can flash a stock HTC stock image (or RUU) back to your phone. Your bootloader WILL need to be relocked for you to be able to flash stock image back to phone. You can find stock HTC roms (RUU's) here http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1317895
When you're in fastboot and your phone is connected to the PC and you've downloaded the correct RUU for your region (they are region specific) double click on the RUU.exe and that should start the procedure of flashing the stock image back to your phone. I've never needed to do this, so I'm not 100% on the whole process.
Please remember that if you flash a RUU back to your phone, you will lose root etc, it will be like when you first got the phone...

Well yeah , it might not have much functions , but still the htcdev unlock is an ERASER , especially for non-rooted guys ! how will they backup their data while they're S-ON+Lock BL ?? This might help even if it doesn't have that much functions , at least it will unlock /system /data etc .... I think the OP should be updated with a warning , but while mentioning that the unlock is safer and does blah blah , but the S-off is a beta and doesn't erase blah blah . WHat do you think Guys ?

like i said its not for the faint hearted among us and best left to more experience users who even struggle with it. i think it should stay in fardjad thread for now while he continues to develop it. a guide is a tried and tested foolproof way to get guys started and stuff like beta hboot s-off should not be added as yet! if you are a stock rom and aim to stay there i dont see the pressing need to backup anything as such. anyway thats my opinion!

How do I make the fastboot?
Hello,
I've just got my HTC SXL and I was successfully do the S-Off and Unlocking the Bootloader.
Next is rooting the device.
But, I have a silly question beforehand. I realize that we must access the fastboot mode before do the rooting. But I can not find it how to do that.
Is there anybody who can help me with that?
Thank you so much
Turn the phone off and take the battery out, then put it back in and and press power button and volume down button until you get a white screen with text on then once there press power button again to get into fastboot
how about creating gold card in SXL memory card , I see that it is internal
any guide for ? or I have to disassemble it...

[TOOL] HTC First All-In-One Toolkit V1.0 [4-20-2013] [PERM ROOT][Noob-Proof]

Post 1 - Information
Post 2 - Downloads and Release / Change Information
Post 3 - Bugs, Future Additions to the GUI, FAQ
I would like to add for those that like my toolkit, PLEASE DO NOT POST IT ELSEWHERE WITHOUT MY PERMISSION!
I have seen multiple sites who copy and paste my work to their site! If I do not approve of it, then do not do it! it will discourage me from adding updates since it is being used for their own benefits!
tl;dr.
If you post my work without permission, don't expect updates!
I created an easy to use GUI program for the HTC Amaze and I decided to make one for the HTC First. I spent a good over 10+ hours to learn how to script, watch videos on how to do it, working on it during school when I should have been listening lol and all that fun stuff. I am going to fix it and up and add more updates to it. You CAN place requests and I will try to fulfill it!
If this helped you out, Please press the thanks button and if you want, you can always donate!

Looking to add in the future
- Kernels
- More recoveries
- Makes Requests!!!
FAQs
Q - Why Did you make this?
A - To make life easier
Q - You are limited on features. Why?
A- You can always make a request!
Q - Will this work on other devices?
A - Only the fastboot commands, HTC Dev unlock (device specific) and the HTC drivers. Toolkit is made for the specific device.
Q - Will you support more devices in the future?
A - If people REALLY want, I can make it happen. I just don't want to make anything that nobody would use.
Q - Awesome! Can I make a donation?
A - Of course! Do not feel obligated though. If you would like to make a donation, you can click the button on my toolkit or under my username.
Nice! Thanks Hasoon!
Love seeing a noob-proof option for a custom recovery and root for the First.
just spitballing for ur one and only bug, why don't u use quotes so multi-worded folders work.. like "C:\Imma folder in an unusual place"

So there's an OTA out there (19.8MB, nothing big), but when it rebooted to update, it got stuck in CWM and I couldn't flash it there. I intended to pull the zip so we could make it flashable (and by "we", I mean someone more skilled than I), but I don't see it on the phone when it's plugged in, and when I check Software Update again, it says no update is available.
I'm well aware that flashing the OTA will likely kill root for me, but at this point, I don't really care. I'm hoping this OTA fixes the few bugs I'm having with the phone, and that's more than worth losing root over for me.
EDIT:
Posted the update in the development forum.

The DL is working again.:good:
Well, I'm no noob when it comes to working with HTC devices as I successfully unlocked the bootloader and rooted my One X with no problems back in the day. However, I'm running into a problem with the HTC First. I have unlocked the bootloader, and I am attempting to use the Toolkit to install a custom recovery. Unfortunately, when I try to do so, it gives me the following text:
'C:\Documents' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\First_All-In-One_Kit_v1.0\data>
After that it just hangs there and doesn't do anything. I'm not quite sure why it's doing that, nor do I understand why it's trying to access a non-existent folder in C:\
Any insight would be much appreciated.

adb won't recognize my phone. I use the toolkit to install the HTC drivers, but when I run the first script it get a "device not found message"
I'll try this on my laptop, see if it makes a difference. I have rooted many phones with this computer: Xperia X8, Xperia Sola, Atrix 4G, Atrix 2 and adb has always shown something when I run "adv devices" command.
I'm open to suggestions though! I'm running windows 7 Ultimate 64bit, in case this information in useful.

[Video Guide] How To Unlock Bootloader & Root - USER FRIENDLY

Hey folks, i know that for some, unlocking bootloaders and rooting for the first time can be a bit overwhelming, so i put together a video, walking you through step by step. I hope this helps at least 1 of you
The toolkit in this video guide was developed by hasson2000, so big props and thanks go out to him! You can find his toolkit here
To the moderators. hasson2000 has asked that folks request his permission to use his work in posts ect.. So i did ask, but he never responded... So since this is doing no harm and only helping people, i assume you won't mind this posted here If you do want to take it down, i won't fight you on it.
If you folks have any questions, i strongly recommend you go to hasson2000s toolkit thread, linked above, and ask there.
Cheers

Nice. Thanks much!!
Thank you so much for the vid, I used it to unlock my bootloader and also installed TWRP... It worked a treat
My issue is that I want to flash the 1.29 OTA onto my EE-branded 4G HTC One. I've downloaded this version: OTA_M7_UL_JB_50_HTC_Europe_1.29.401.12-1.28.401.7_release_315849_signedp7vl8dqsvls0h1t0.z ip from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2207874. I have attempted to Flash my own recovery, but am unsure as to which .img file to use and also which option in the bootloader to select. I've searched all throughout these forums, but to no avail
If anyone can help, it would be much appreciated.
Many thanks

Thanks, this worked like a charm!
This is my first Android phone and reading all of this did seem scary, but watching the video and doing it myself.. pretty easy!
So, there is no way to root this device without unlocking it first? I've also read that after you unlock, you loose some apps & obviously OTA updates......4.2.2 is rumored to be out for this device any time now. Is there anyway to preserve those apps, possibly update phone (even manually) or just root without unlocking?

you won't loose any apps if you unlock, you will lose all of your files though... and you can still receive OTAs is you are unlocked, you just need to have the stock rom and a stock recovery...
Success (relatively painless)
I'd like to add my success story as a hopeful note for other noobs who are sweating it.
I'm a complete noob with recovery and rooting. Luckily I had the distinct advantage of skipping the whole bootloader unlocking sequence, thanks to having the Developer Edition whose bootloader comes unlocked. (I wasn't sure if I should use Hasoon2000's T-Mobile kit, since I'm using a T-mo SIM, or if I should use his generic HTC One M7 kit, so I chose the latter and luckily it was a good choice.)
I studied this video tutorial by TheSmokingAndroid, took notes, watched it again, said a little prayer to the green guy in the sky, watched some more tutorials, read some tutorials, read 50 pages of xda forums, panicked, de-panicked, steeled myself, then watched the video again. Then I dove in.
While not every step had the exact results that TheSmokingAndroid depicted in his video (combination of user error by me and the HTC One apparently being somewhat finicky), while not every step was an exact match, a little persistence and staying calm resulted in full root in about 1/2 an hour once I actually got started, and no major calamities.
So thanks TheSmokingAndroid and thanks Hasoon2000!
(If you're a noob, consider making a small donation like I did to keep these guys going.)
Happy rooting.

I receive tons of PMs and can forget who I responded to, since I am on my phone majority of the time. Anyone is allowed to make a video using my toolkit. I just do not permit people to repost my work on another site. All official toolkit threads will be on XDA and all the toolkits will be uploaded to ONLY my Dev-Host account. I do not authorize mirrors of my toolkits (since anyone can just repack it with a virus and blame me for it). However, my apologies if I did not get back to you. I usually wake up with 10 - 15 PMs, plus more throughout the day!

I used that tool yesterday to root mine. I wish I knew of this video though. The device is finicky when trying to get a root!!
HTC One (China model) htc 802w
Getting into the China model of HTC One (htc 802w) bootloader and recovery.
It should work for any model as well.
factory reset
Hi, I recently unlocked my bootloader and rooted my HTC One and flashed the cyanogen rom. However, I want to now go back to the original software that came with my phone, but I did not backup my phone on twrp recovery. I do not care about my user data, I just want to go back to HTC Sense. Could anyone help me go back to the factory default os reset? Also my phone is from T-mobile if that helps.
I'd personally like to know how to pull the stock recovery image from my device for later use, rather than using someone else's. I've already searched but I'm directed to the stock recovery image already posted here. Isn't there a way to make the image flashable rather than pushing it through with ADB?

Cheers
