[Q] After root, only charges when off. - HTC Incredible S

Hi there,
Rooted my phone yesterday, downgraded from HBoot 2.00 to 1.13 using Nonverbose's script and then used Revolutionary to get S-OFF and then finally flashed Virtuous Quattro RC3 as well as the latest Tiamat kernel.
Works fine, just the phone won't charge if it's switched on. I have to power off for it to charge at all.
I know it's not a ROM problem, because I've tried both Quattro and IceColdSandwich, and neither will charge, and I'm quite sure it's not the cable, as it obviously works when powered off. I have also tried two other cables and one wall charger.
I've tried reflashing the kernel, doing Davlik cache wipes etc. Also checked the battery for bent pins, and it seems fine.
Is there any diagnostic check I can run to see if the battery is faulty etc? Or something I forgot while rooting/flashing?
Thanks in advance,
Larry

Ics roms are always bit laggy atm. Quattro isn't made to use with tiamat. Icecoldsandwich 7 dont needs tiamat cause the stock kernel ist better optimized for it. Try a stock sense, miui or cm7 rom. If this doesn't suit too i think your usb port is in yhe ansroid heaven.

Okay, I'm going to install CM 7.2 RC1 today. When I flash the ROM, do I have to flash another kernel or will Tiamat get lost automatically? Where can I find a download for the stock kernel?
Thanks!

Stock kernel will be included within the rom anyway. So don't worry.

You can transfer files while connected via USB?

I installed CM 7.2 by loading it onto the MicroSD card via a cardreader, because I couldn't get my phone to mount storage on my PC (I kept getting the 'device malfunctioned' message). I can't find the setting to enable disk drive mode, or battery info, can anyone help with this?
Actually, I've got it on now, and I just saw it go from 'Charging (9%)' to 'Charging (8%)', the same as the other roms.
I guess it's the microUSB port?

Do you use your device while charging? Sometimes is the Usb Output lower than the used power. Have you disabled wifi/data/wlan and do on while charging? You have to press in the notification bar on the Usb. Notifications and select usb drive

By way of some miracle, USB mass storage and debugging are working now. Should I try to unroot to get back to S-ON for warranty, assuming it's the microUSB port?
Oh, and I just saw it go from Charging 11% to 12%, so I guess it's charging. I'm afraid to touch it though, guessing the port's really fragile.

Uhh so I'm trying to follow this guide to get back to S-ON, but it requires ADB and USB debugging. After flashing the stock rom back on, I can't seem to get debugging to work again. The USB icon is in the status bar so I know it's charging, but there should be a notification for debugging mode, right?
I'm assuming it's not possible to put the files on the microSD card and then flash the HBOOT on the device itself? (maybe I should post about this in the guide's thread)
EDIT: I should also note that despite being able to set it to disk drive mode, I'm still getting the 'device malfunctioned' message on my PC, so I can't directly transfer files to the SD. I guess that's why debugging isn't working.

Have you ever installed HTC Sync or the HTC USB drivers on your PC? Those are the key to getting adb and fastboot working.

Yes, I have HTC Sync installed. I also installed the ADB/fastboot files from here, just to be sure. I don't think that would be the problem anyway, since not even Windows is recognizing it.

Have you tried another sdcard? This might be a corrupt misc.img. When you used my script, did you have any issues with gold card creation, or have you messed with the Cid in any other way? The script should have made a backup of your original misc partition so it shouldn't be too hard to flash it back, but first you should try flashing another rom, tpbklakes stock rooted rom would be a good one to try unless you have a stock nandroid on your sdcard.
Btw, what recovery are you using? Please include version number.

Sorry, I flashed the stock ROM right before you posted this. I just tried putting in another SD card and it's getting the same error. I'm sure it's the USB port at this port, seeing how I have to position the cable to get it to charge at all, and it's getting harder and harder to position. I'm just hoping for a way to flash the HBOOT on the device at this point.
I think I was using Recovery 5.0.3.0? I installed it from ClockworkMod's Rom Manager. And I didn't mess with the Cid at all, or have problems with the goldcard creation.

Ah well yeah, if you have to physically manipulate the USB cord to get it to charge then its a hardware issue. Warranty will take care of that.
So you're back to s-on, no issues?

Well, not yet! I have stock rom working fine, but when I load up the bootloader, it still says Revolutionary, S-OFF. So I'm trying to get it to say FASTBOOT USB while bending the cable around and round etc. It's only flashing to USB a couple of times, and then it says USB Device not recognized on my PC, so I guess it won't work anyway if I get the cable in properly.

I'm having trouble even getting the option to change that now, but shouldn't I be in the bootloader if I want to be using fastboot?
Also, I should probably specify that this is the stock ROM I flashed:

[Q] Phone won't connect to computer

Alright, so before I get flamed, I have searched for over an hour today, and I have not been able to figure this out. I am not new to android, rooting, custom roms, and editing files, so I have tried a multitude of different things.
To the point, my Droid 3 will not connect to my computer. It did a couple weeks ago when I flashed the Liberty Rom onto it, but now it'll just charge and not go into the USB mode. The only reason I know it is charging is when I disconnect the cord it says the disconnected message.
I have tried a couple different cables, and I usually use my stock cable that came with my D3. I have also tried restarting my phone and computer. I even flashed the newest Liberty Rom the hard way and still no luck.
If someone could please help me out I would be VERY grateful as this is a PITA!!!
Thanks in advance!
My two cents would be, try different usb port and make sure you have the most current moto drivers.
Have had luck with uninstalling driver pack and reinstalling.
Hope that helps.
Sent from my DROID3 using XDA App
I appreciate the help, unfortunately uninstalling the drivers didn't work, unless I didn't get the correct drivers? I went into uninstall programs. In the device manager nothing came up for my phone or drivers. And I have also tried different ports but to no luck. Thanks again for the reply.
Have you tried a different computer? A different device? Let's just rule out that this isn't a computer issue first...
My Zune works in all of my ports, and my other computer. My Phone however does not. It does the same thing as my other computer, although I guess I don't have the drivers on the other computer, but it would still come up as usb connection right? All this does is charge, sometimes.
Have you tried Linux? No drivers are needed. download a live CD and see if it helps.

Can you explain?
("Very Important"!) PLEASE POST!!!
After sufferring through the same issue and delving deeply for almost two days,I have found the culprit!!! IT IS THE USB CORD AND NOT THE DRIVERS OR ANYTHING ELSE!!"SIMPLY USE THE FIRST USB CORD THAT YOU USED THE VERY FIRST TIME YOU PLUGED INTO YOUR COMPUTOR AND THAT WILL RECTIFY(FIX) YOUR PROBLEM.(IT HAS TO BE THE VERY FIRST USB CORD OTHERWISE YOU WILL CONTINUE TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM UNTIL AND NO OTHER COMPUTOR WILL RECOGNIZE YOUR DEVICE UNTIL YOU DO WHAT I SAY.I thought it was the rooting of my phone that initially caused the issue or maybe an app, however,I found the culprit. The usb cord!!!(WHATEVER USB YOU USED FOR THE VERY FIRST ,STOCK OR NOT,IT IS THE ONLY ONE YOUR COMPUTOR WILL RECOGNIZE!!! I HOPE THIS HELPS THE MANY OF YOU THAT ARE HAVING THIS SAME ISSUE AND GOOD LUCK

Thanks for clearing that up for me, I haven't competed the fourth grade.
Dude could've just said use the USB cord that came with the phone, to each his own. I have 6 micro usb cables and only the moto official will allow me to do anything other than charge the phone via cpu.

[Q] Samsung Captivate USB issue

Hello everyone,
I've done quite a lot of searching, and I can find almost no one else with the same issues.
Basically, when I plug in the phone via usb, the computer will not recognize the device. I have tried every mode (mass storage, kies, usb debug, etc). However, it will charge. I have tried several cables, including those I know transfer data. When I try to put it into mass storage mode, I do not get a notification on the notification bar telling me to mount the SD or USB storage. I'm not sure if this is a hardware & software issue, or just one of the two.
I work in IT, so I'm not new to repairing hardware or software. Just trying to find SOME leads. The guy who owned this before me didn't do a great job of putting the phone back together when he tried to repair the screen (has a greenish tint, thought it was a loose connection but it may just be defective or needs to be cleaned. Either way, not my concern as of right now).
If anyone has any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated
PS I have tried SEVERAL drivers on SEVERAL computers, Win7, Win8, OSX Lion, Lubuntu 12.10
Also tried putting the phone in Download mode to see if Odin/heim-something or other would recognize it, no luck.
Wondering if the usb isn't fully connected to the port, and if I should take off the back housing, plug it in, and see if it works that way?

Other than charging, when you connect to a pc do you get a device malfunction message in windows? We know the +5v and ground work since it charges so if you get the malfunction message in windows its a short in the data pins. If there is no message, just charging and no reaction from the phone other than the charging indicator, I'd say there is no contact to one or both data pins. I'd look in the micro usb port to make sure the pins are straight (and there lol) and if it looks dirty, use a shot of crc electronic cleaner in the port (battery out and screen facing up).
Of coarse this is if it isn't software related which it very well could be, but sounds more hardware related to me....

Yep, that's exactly what pops up. I can't see very well right now (at work, have no magnifying glass here). I remember a long time ago having a couple bent data pins in my old BlackBerry Curve lol, ended up popping em back in. Hopefully, that will be the same case here.

On a slightly-unrelated note, did some browsing and came up with this quick question.
Is there anyway to root the Captivate on 2.3.5 without PC connection? (I can send files to the phone via an external SD, just can't use Super One Click etc right now).
If not, couldn't I just flash back to 2.2 using recovery(stock, but as long as the update.zip signed correctly[will be stock firmware so I don't see why it wouldn't] it should work right?) and use z4root?
Well, to follow up:
I see no broken or misplaced pins, it all looks correct to me. I will try to upload a photo tonight.
In the meantime, I managed to brick (I think). Accidentally installed the wrong kernel from my SD (speedmod, which I forgot was for Froyo). Now I have CWM, but I cannot mount via usb still, and since I can't access the external sd from cwm, I'm stuck either in recovery mode or stuck at the Samsung screen.
Anyone have any ideas besides just setting it aside for a paper weight?

Does that version of cwm have the option to flash from ext sd? Go to install zip in cwm and see if there is the option to flash zip from extsd. If so, then you should be all set putting the right kernel or rom on your ext sd and flash away. Not sure I'm the best person to answer your question, but I would start there I guess.

U can't get Root for a Captivate running Android 2.3.5 without a proper working micro usb port.
U can't flash back to Stock Froyo without a proper working micro usb port. (Unless u had Root already and then u could use Mobile Odin from the Play Store).
Only update.zip files signed by Samsung would work in the Stock 3e Recovery.
Stock Eclair had the 2e Recovery that did not require the signature verification.
Sounds like u need a new micro usb port.
Did u take a read at this thread...Captivate - PC Connection Issues...
If that thread is no help then it probably is a hardware issue. :/

1. Yes, actually you can. It's a temp root, but it works (how else would I have been able to flash the wrong kernel). I forget the apk I used, not on market anymore. I think it was like Mizu m9 or something, actually worked was kind of surprised.
2. Stock 3e is nbd now, I can boot into CWM 2.5.1.0 [which does have boot from ext-sd, but it either says it can't mount it or no files found. Not sure if its a version issue, if I could mount it and access the files on the ext-sd somehow this would all be solved and I'd love you guys <3
Yeah, I looked into the new USB port thing.I've tried every driver known to man lol. I think I'll end up getting the port repaired from that one website that was suggested, I think its $35 or so no big deal.
But can anyone confirm that CWM 2.5.1.0 can read an ext-sd? It's odd, because I assume on the captivate it gets mounted at /sdcard/external_sd, and when I look for a zip file to flash from the sd, I can see that folder, but trying to go into it just causes the message "no files found"
Gonna check this meizu m9 root method out.... hmmm...
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
Go for it, once installed it's pretty straight forward lol. But make you you dl the superuser app from the market (I did it before, just in case that matters). Mobile odin worked fine, adb wireless worked fine, etc.
But I just tried partitioning my SD card, and it still won't read in CWM. I tried mounting /sd-ext but every time I do it just says Error: can't mount
Yeah...i'm just curious as to how that root method works...since a method like that (gaining Root without having to use a connection to a pc) has never been done before with the Captivate since its release.

Gotcha, sounds good. Yeah not too sure if it's safe or not, was just trying anything.
On another note, what format does my SD card need to be in to be read by CWM Recovery? I had it set to exFat, Fat32, and ext2/fat32 and I still isn't being read or able to mount :\.
I was gonna say FAT32 full format as i have read that suggested by others, but looks like u tried that. The card may be bad...idk for sure though.
(Btw...would u mind attaching a copy of the meizu m9 root apk ? Thx.)
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
I may try fat32 again. Interesting though, I had a zip of another version of CWM on the INTERNAL SD which I CAN access.
When I install that (not really install it, just run it), I can mount sd-ext but not /sdcard/ lol...says it's busy...I'm starting to think this is a permissions issue more than anything.....
Sure, it's on my dropbox I can just download it quick and upload it here.
EDIT: idk what's with the extension on the file, should just put it on an sd card and install fine.

Help! My phone won't charge or connect to any USB

Ok so last night I transferred some files with otg cable. Unmounted the usb and then went to put the phone on the charger and it did not recognize the charger. I did get it to charge after I powered it down and let it sit all night. But when the phone is on it doesn't recognize anything plugged into the usb port. Anyone have any suggestions?
I posted this over in the AT&T forums already since that's my carrier but I am running international firmware and rom so I figured it irrelevant here as well. Running the 3.09.401.1 firmware since it dropped and Maximus 12.1 rom. Also have tried switching my rom back to a 2.24.401.8 base with no difference.
Today I noticed then when booted into recovery it also will charge. So not convinced it is my port... But not sure hat I can do either since I can't get USB to recognize while it is on or in the bootloader... PLEASE HELP!!

If recovery is working, flash back to stock and then see if USB is working.

Problem is I don't have my stock backup I accidentally forgot to move it before formatting going from 4.1.2-4.2.2. And since I can't get it to recognize USB I'm not sure how to get anything back on there... I feel like I want to blame firmware because it doesn't matter which rom I use from two different bases...

I have the same problem, I was on the Maximus ROM and a factory reset let me get USB working enough to copy across ARHD, but since setting up the ROM its since stopped working again.
occasionally it pops up saying it is in USB host mode, i'm pretty sure this is the problem, but when i plug in my OTG cable the USB drive on the end is not detected either.
downloading a stock backup and am going to try taking an ota to flash firmware see if that corrects the issue. if not then i guess i will be trying to get it replaced because it must be hardware at that point. i dont know what else to try.
So it appears to be software/firmware related. I went back to stock rom and recovery in hopes that I could take an ota and let it downgrade my firmware... However I forgot that the touch drivers I have don't function with the old stock rom... I am now getting charge while booted up though... Plugged into pc I get charge but no management capability...yet. I have no idea how to do anything on the phone to help my cause at this point besides maybe going back to see if the computer picks it up in hboot now...

Phone in USB Host Mode

Hello!,
I got my phone into a weird situation, every time I try to connect to my PC, it's saying "Phone is in USB host mode", the PC tries to recognizes and nothing happens, after that the phone won't charge and stays like that until I rebooted, I can charge it with the original charger after this.
My device:
HTC One AT&T 32GB
ROM: ARHD 41.0
I also tried this method with no results: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2481211
Anyone with this situation too?

You mean it's showing up as QHSUSB_DLOAD in Device Manager?
Unfortunately that would indicate a hard brick, no fix, as far as I am aware of.
Welcome to the group of unfortunate people.
I guess the best option would be to send it back for warranty repairs, mine is the same and I'm 99.99% sure it has to do with the charging port.
Unfortunately for me I'm out of the US so warranty shipping is not an option at the moment.
There are other threads about this problem, but so far the only ones I heard that solved this problem was by repair or replace.

No, it's not bricked it works ok but only charges through wall charger and if you plug it up to a pc it gets into "USB Host Mode" and then you have to reboot to be able to charge from the wall charger.
My HTC showed the same message. Saying it can not charge into host mode.
HTC only charges powered off.

Indeed man, same situation here, I'm actually in Colombia, so not an option to send it, as I can't go back to factory settings without connecting it to the PC.
@nkk71 The device is fully functional, it's just not getting detected on my pc.

What Windows version you running?
but be careful, QHSUSB_DLOAD mode is a brick... sooner or later
maybe best to get yourself an ubuntu live usb, and check adb and fastboot connections there. you can use this guide by @tobesedated to create a Live USB http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2606577
maybe it's just bad/outdated windows drivers.

Steps 8-15 of my guide show how to set up adb/fastboot in Ubuntu 32bit and to check if your device is recognized. You don't have to install Ubuntu just select to try it. I think that's what scares everyone off, is thinking they have to install the OS...It seems like a lot of work but it really isn't and compared to what you've gone through, it can't hurt....good luck

Win 7 and XP are pretty much OK with any drivers & hboot & firmware/rom, but what is it exactly showing you when you say "USB Host Mode"?
Have you considered uninstalling everything with HTC.... in control panel, and installing newer version: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2089508
then see if you get MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) working again.
USB Host Mode (as in Qualcomm High Speed USB Download Mode) is NOT a good sign! it's a brick about to happen.
maybe try changing the cable you are using to your PC!!!
EDIT: and make sure you're phone's USB port is not dirty or similar

1. "Phone is in USB mode" appears as a notification on the phone when plugged to the computer.
2. Installed 3 different ROMs with the same result, uninstall everything, and nothing.
3. Don't know how to get back MTP.
4. Brick??
5. I try to charge it, but same thing happens.
6. Clean the port, and nothing.

let's take this down a notch, we dont care what your phone says, we care what shows up in Windows 7 Device Manager (or XP, maybe even Win8):
for example
I really haven't explored what steps are needed to get it back to stock, but mine connects to the pc as long as it's in bootloader so I can flash stuff like Fw but nothing that need to get into the sd card. (as far as I know).

I'm thinking this a port issue, is damage somehow, however, I hope to find a software solution.
New Firmware
Phone that was purchased was not recognized by my computer in recovery and was locked with no S-Off and did not have a Super CID, but assuming that you have all of those things already and are developing these issues then I would try updating the firmware. For some reason, after flashing the 5.11.1540.9 firmware from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2485651 and updating to ARHD 71.1 the charging issue all has seemed to disappear. If anyone wants the full run down of how I got from my original non-functioning and unrecognized phone to where it is now I can put in details, but as far as I can tell the issue is just with the firmware if you find yourself being able to intermittently charge in different scenarios when it is off.
Loading New Firmware
Also, for some reason, computer would not recognize phone with TWRP recovery yet I could push files through adb when using CWM recovery. So what happened for me was loading up CWM and pushing the files that I needed into the data folder and flashing TWRP to then install it or rebooting the phone as normal and finding the file with something like a root file explorer. I feel like I may not be very clear with this so post if there needs to be more clarification.
it's a strange issue ,i think it is a hardware problem, happen to me and i try everything possible, without success, than i charge phone when power of and it was the only way ,but led was flashing so it was intermittent charging,i was able to charge only to 97%..i use my phone and somehow next day i was able to charge phone, but then problem occur again...and wired thing is that fastboot devices list is not empty but adb devices list is empty,so phone is not fully recognized by computer, and i forgot to say that day when i was able to charge phone, adb command worked...that day i flashed firmware recovery and rom again ,because i thought it will resolve the problem...

[Q] HTC One not seen by computer

For some months my HTC One has not been seen by my PC.
I also cannot use my OTG cable.
I have tried reinstalling the HTC drivers,
Connecting to different PCs
searching for a solution
but I can't access the HTC One, use fastboot, etc.
I have a workround for adding or working on files by using wireless connection in MyPhoneExplorer.
I cannot get S-OFF or (I think) replace the Radio, and I suspect the problem may lie there, unless it is a hardware problem, in which case I'll live with it. I did install a 3G only App which caused a few problems, but I can't relate the problem directly to that, as I did not notice at that time.
In case the Radio change would help, can anyone direct me a way to
a) replace radio without S-OFF, OR
b) get S-OFF without fastboot, connection to PC etc.
c) advise another approach
Thanks in advance

I assume it still charges, so usb is at least partially working. Interesting that OTG doesn't work any longer, would seem to point to usb on device rather than PC. There are several threads regarding folks cleaning usb connector, have you tried?

I've looked with a magnifier and blown into it, but nothing apparent seen. Tried multiple USB connectors.
It does charge correctly. The USB notification does sometimes stay on even when not charging though, forgot about that.
hboot 1.44 can be done with rum runner. I still use hansoon's toolkit to bad its not here anymore. I would recommend running RUU it should fix your issue's.S-OFF first and theres no need to relock bootloader when s-off to run RUU. Have you tried wiping data in recovery????? S-off cannot be done with a pc nor can radios be flashed. your problem most likely is tied to the system since no pc recognizes it.Also try changing recoveries.

I think Rumrunner and run RUU needs fastboot working.
I've done several wipes and reset to factory..
The USB controller in Device manager shows nothing in Universal Serial Bus Controllers but an old Samsung Android phone shows Samung Android USB composite device. On another computer it shows up on Other Devices.
I assume mine should show HTC device when the USB notification is on but it doesn't, so the phone knows about the USB but a pc doesn't. Weird?
I have tried 3 recoveries recently that didn't get the phone recognised, but as I'm on Viper I'll stick with TWRP for now, as the last recovery didn't want to go away.
Mine only shows as android device until I 2x click it. Then I see my HTC drivers. Hope you get it fixed.

I have tried this several times, on more than one PC. Doesn't seem to be the answer.
I can update on one item. I have been trying to find out what software I installed which might have caused it or made it worse. When I installed Stickmount, a helper for OTG, and then uninstalled it I found that my device again recognises the OTG cable on the notification bar, but the power light on the stick or adapter does not power up, and I can't see files.
This might have pointed to a failed power connection on the USB connector, although charging indicates and works ok?
The power and ground must connect, and also the host signal. Perhaps one of the 2 data connectors is faulty on the micro USB connector, which might explain everything?
Same problem here. Did you solve it ?
I had a sense 7 custom rom than i flashed CM 12.1 and that problem still continues
