download clockwork recovery from the app store.
Flash its recovery, then boot into recovery after a successful flash.
Out of curiosity, why did you install a non-rooted version of 2.3.3.?
You can get into recovery... what you're seeing is the front of the stock one. Hold volume+ and hit power.
The only way to get root on 2.3.3 currently is to unlock the bootloader and use fastboot. Being S-ON is nothing to do with it, 99% of N1s are.

Thread moved to Q&A, a sub-forum dedicated exclusively for questions like these. Please post all further questions here. Do not post new question threads in development, as you are not doing any even remotely related to Android development. That said, I'm glad you were able to figure out your issue.
Downloading clockworkmod will not work. He is not rooted so he can't flash the recovery with it.

This happened to me 2 days ago (word by word)!!
From Amon Recovery's page, this is what the problem is:
"Make sure that init.rc isn't calling any install-recovery.sh script, otherwise you'll boot back to stock recovery (exclamation mark with a little Android). More info on this here"
Here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10467058&postcount=1638
My problem was even more complicated because I tried flashing froyo without a wipe so my phone started going into boot loop!
Thanks to danger-rat's reply, I was able to get into recovery at least once and then everything came back under control. He said "Recovery is only restored when you boot into system, so the idea is that you flash recovery, and go straight into it via the on phone menu, and then install what you need to..."
Here's my thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=980577
edit: I just realized that you are not able to fastboot either? I was able fastboot and flash recovery onto my phone and then without turning the phone off - I was able to go into recovery straight after flashing amon_recovery.img
passimg back to an earlier version of Android, root, then install a pre-rooted GB...
If you get the "main version is older" error, you're out of luck and your only option is to unlock the bootloader or wait for a new method to be found...

Is there a way to enable CallRecorder on IncS to record clean sound from both sides from line, not from mic, because the sound is very bad? I found THIS site and there is sad that "Requires the kernel with 2-way call recording patch"? I tried but cannot find anything about that, anybody know where to find that kernel, or is there some other application that can do call record with clean sound? I tried couple of them from market but none is good. Thanks.
Unity kernels have 2wcr patch. There's app in first post and mirror in last.
Thank you. You mean on THIS therad? I have Incredible S v.2.3.5 sense 3.0, stock ROM, rooted, unlocked bootloader with HtcDev, S-ON. Is this compatible with my device? I just need to flash form CWM/install from zip? Where i can find stock kernel, if something go wrong to return to stock? Thanks!

Yes sorry I forgot to post a link. As you are s-on, the easiest way to flash this kernel is to replace your cwm with the latest version of 4ext touch recovery. To restore the the stock kernel, just restore the boot.img that you backed up as a nandroid in 4ext before you flashed unity But you should have no issues.
Thanks again. I never used 4ext touch recovery, is necessary to flash kernel with that tool or i can also do it with cwm? I already done nandroid backup from cwm.

You cannot flash a kernel with cwm on a s-on device. 4ext is very easy to use. You will have to redo your nandroid as I don't think the cwm backup method is compatible with 4ext.
So i just install 4ext, beside cwm, wright?

Download the app in the 4ext thread and flash from there.
I downloaded 4EXTRecoveryUpdater.apk and install from there, everything went ok but when i boot into recovery it's still CWM, not 4ext, what to do?

You need root access, then select online install. I don't know if you have done either of these things as your post contains insufficient information.
Yes, i have root access (superuser) and i selected online install, and installation went well, installed 4EXT Recovery Touch v1.0.0.5 RC3 (latest). But, when i want to boot into recovery (power+volumedown), phone boot in CWM (which i installed 2 days ago) instead of 4ext. What i am doing wrong?

The app should give you a copy of the 4ext recovery in your downloads folder, you might want to flash it manually. The app gives options to reboot into recovery, you might need to use it.
I use the option in the app to reboot into recovery, but it rebooted in CWM. How to manually flash the 4ext?
Ok, i used 4ext file from download folder on phone and flash the img with fastboot flash recovery command and now i have 4ext touch recovery. Now, i boot into recovery, choose install zip from sd card, and install UNITY_V9_2.6.35.14 from my sd card, and i will have unity kernel, right?

Use the app to flash the kernel. Make sure you have s-on smartflash enabled in the recovery settings and create a backup first.
"S-On: 4EXT SmartFlash - This setting is unavailable for your device". This option is greyed-out and i cannot select it?

Hmm, did you tell the app you were s-on when you installed it?
I don't remember i sow that question during install, can i check it out now, or re-flash and tell the app that i am s-on?
edit: i just re-flashed and there is NO question at all, just installing and done!
I found this: "This is done when you install recovery and answer the question that you are s-on with "yes".
You can also change that setting later on via RecoveryControl -> Recovery settings, or by editing 4ext.prop manually"
How to edit 4ext.prop manually?
I found that file on sd card and edit it, now is s-on=yes (was NO) but nothing changed. I reboot and recheck 4ext.prop and there is s-on=NO, again. I send mail to madmaxx82 and this is what it say:
"yes it's like that. Your device is unsupported by SmartFlash, because it's technically impossible on your device, which means you need to flash kernels/boot and even recoveries with fastboot. Sorry, but there is absolutely no way!"
So, can i flash UNITY kernel with fastboot with s-on?

I guess you could try booting the recovery in fastboot.
Code:
fastboot boot recovery.img
and flash the kernel.zip from there, but this method is unconfirmed on our devices.
Otherwise you will have to go s-off if its that important to have this feature.
Ok, thanks. I want to try to downgrade and gain s-off.
In your thread "[TOOL][SCRIPT][20 Feb 2012]S-off for HBOOT 1.16 and above v3.1" is a link to RUU used for downgrade. In that RUU the radio is 20.2808.30.085AU_3805.06.03.03 and i have higher radio (20.482.30.0822U_3822.10.08.28_M). Somewhere i read that downgrade the radio can brick the device? Or that can happened only if try to downgrade with lower version of android, like from Gingerbread to Froyo? I have Gingerbread, like the RUU for downgrade. Can i safely use your script to downgrade and s-off my device?
I recently got my HTC Raider 4G LTE at Bell and I was wondering if I could root after I do the official OTA download to Android 4.0 and HTC Sense 3.6. Currently, it is brand new out of the box so that would mean locked bootloader, unrooted, and S-ON.
I know how to get the bootloader unlocked if that is necessary.
Could I root first, and then do the official update, and still keep the root? Or should I update first, and then root (if that is possible)?
What should I do? I basically want the simplest way to get root (but it would be nice to also get the update but I don't care too much about it).
Also, do I need to get S-OFF? Again, I am looking for the simplest/best way to get root on my device, so I can get custom roms and stuff.
I have tried Vivid All In One Kit 2.2 but when I try to install SuperSU.zip in ClockWorkMod Recovery, I get "installation aborted". I don't think I did it right though... I created a .zip file, named it SuperSU, and basically copy/pasted the SuperSU folder that was in the toolkit.
I have also had a glimpse of the superguide in vivid android development but I think I need S-OFF... Is the superguide the best way to do this? Could some people show me some examples or solve for why I can't get root? Most of the links that I have seen are for the HTC Vivid. I'm sure they should work but I just want to make sure since I am using a Canadian HTC Raider (Bell).
First things first, run the RUU to get the ICS hboot/ROM. You can find it here. Make sure you do the right ICS one for your carrier. Then go ahead and do steps 1 and 4 from the superguide. That will essentially give you the rooted stock ICS ROM. S-OFF is not absolutely necessary. All you need to do is manually flash the kernel before flashing the ROM EVERY time you want a new ROM. All S-OFF does is make you able to flash recovery and kernel from the recovery. So that means when you flash a ROM, it is automatically able to flash the kernel as well. I am still S-ON though, it just adds the small step of manually flashing the kernel.
Why do I need to run the RUU?
I assume RUU gets me hboot access, official ICS (Android 4.0 or something) and HTC Sense 3.6? and step 4 gets basically gets root
Couldn't I just officially update the device OTA or with a connection, and then do something to get hboot, and then root?
Or do you think it would be much simpler to to run RUU?
So far, I have unlocked the bootloader via HTCdev (step 1) and have clockworkmod recovery which I got with the toolkit.
Also, when I hold volume down and power button, I believe it fastboots without giving me any options. I can only get to clockworkmod recovery and what I believe is hboot (where I can see whether or not the bootloader is unlocked or locked, S-ON or S-OFF, and get options for boot) by using the toolkit (or by typing in the adb commands).

OTA, RUU, PH zip will all not work because you have an unlocked bootloader. Re-lock the bootloader first. The RUU is just about the easiest way to get stock ICS and it updates the HBOOT by itself. After the RUU, unlock the bootloader once again (step 1) and then perm root (step 4).

I have a rogers raider its updated to ics by ota then I unlocked bootloader. And used vivid all in one and have cwm recovery on my phone. I tried to perma root but it didn't stick because it was still stock Rom. So who can I use holics without s-off?

If you want stock root then follow step 4 in the guide in my signature. To flash ROMs without S-OFF takes an extra step. Every time you want to flash a new ROM, you need to flash the matching kernel beforehand. Use the guide in my signature to learn how to flash a kernel.

4) Perm-Root your device (WildChild)
- Turn off your phone, turn it back on my holding power + volume down
- Use the volume rocker and power button to select fastboot
- Connect your phone to your PC
- Inside the WCXJB ROOT PACK, click shift + right click and select "Open command window here"
- Enter in these commands without the quotes
- "fastboot flash recovery wcxrecovery.img"
- Now you can boot up your phone
- Download and put Vivid_CWM_Root_VER2 zip file on root of internal sdcard (aka NOT in any folders)
- Boot into H-Boot like you did before (turn off phone, turn back on holding power + vol down), and use the volume rockers to go to "recovery" and press the power button to select it
- Select "install zip from sdcard"
- Select the VIVID_CWM_ROOT_VER2.zip through recovery and then reboot your phone
- You are now rooted and I recommend flashing a matching kernel + ROM for root to stick
So this will give me stock rogers Rom but rooted? And can I just flash VIVID_CWM_ROOT_VER2.ZIP FROM recovery because I already have custom recovery?
Or do I still need to go through the steps. Thanks for your patience.

Yea, pretty much all you need to do is flash that VIVID_CWM_ROOT zip in recovery and it should yield root if you are on the stock ROM with unlocked bootloader. If it doesn't give root the first time, try flashing it a couple more times.
Recovery
I seem to have a problem getting into recovery (CWM). Whenever I turn my device off and try to turn it back on by holding power and volume down, it fastboots instantly when I let go without giving me any options. I have downloaded Rom Manager flashed CWM but when I tried to reboot into recovery, it gets stuck at the HTC sign. The only way I had accessed bootloader or recovery early was thanks to the toolkit. Any way I can fix this so I can go to recovery anytime I want without connecting to PC?

Hm... I've been hearing odd things happening with that recovery. Does your PC still recognize your phone? If it does, then you should be alright. I would suggest re-locking the bootloader and running the stock ICS RUU for your carrier (this is all in my guide titled "back to stock"). After that run steps 1 and 4 from my guide if all you want is stock root. Basically all it is is unlock bootloader > flash WCX recovery > perm root.

Cleanest way would be start over with relock bootloader, RUU, then steps 1 and 4 from my guide if you don't need s off. You could try just flashing over WCX recovery though, but it probably won't clean all the old stuff out from CWM.

My HTC raider is from Rogers and is S-on. I flash custom ROM on it but it is 2.3.6 vision. I want update to higher version of Android such as 4.0. So i need relock the bootloader but problem is I couldn't find the stock rogers' ROM. The link you post doesn't work anymore.
Is there somewhere I can download one? Thank you very much.
Hi Guys,
My heads sorta spinning from information overload so I'm hoping one of you guys can help me. I have a Incredible S and I used this guide to downgrade my HBOOT and get my S-OFF using revolutionary and flash clockwork, which I did successfully. I then decided to install this ROM which requires Blackrose. So I installed blackrose beta sucessfully overwriting the revolutionary HBOOT. This is where it all starts to go wrong. I then set about doing a full wipe and tried to install the ROM using Clockwork and the installation completed sucessfully. But when I try to boot up my phone I get stuck at the HTC quietly brilliant screen. I also restored a backup I took with Clockwork with the same results; stuck at the boot screen. I tried following the steps in the thread of the ROM (listed below) with no avail.
Here are some steps you can try if the ROM hangs on the HTC splash screen
1. Download the file lib.zip from here: http://bit.ly/PwK4BH (MD5 SUM: 83dd68b32d39c994b3069d8813b3c3ea)
2. Unzip the lib.img and place it on your PC where you have fastboot.exe installed.
3. Boot into FASTBOOT USB mode and then enter the following command:
fastboot flash lib lib.img
4. Wipe Data/System Reset.
5. Wipe Dalvik Cache.
6. Then reinstall vivo_signed_WWE_4.10.405.1_ICS_SENSE36_8.zip
Do any of you guys have any suggestions or know whats wrong? Even if I can get back to the latest stock ROM while preserving my root I would be happy.
Thanks Guys!!!
BTW i would have posted in the rom thread on I dont have enough posts :crying:

The only option you have at this point is to flash an official PG32IMG.zip file extracted from a RUU and copy it to your SD card. Then when you boot into bootloader it will find the file, flash it and that should get you going.
It sound like you need to use the 2.30.405.1 RUU from here:

I've got a problem with my HTC ONE m7
Tried to install ARHD 81.
So I unlocked the bootloader, installed TWRP and then flashed the ROM.
Rebooted the phone and it stuck to the white HTC loading screen.
Waited for about 20mins. then rebooted the phone. tried flashing the ROM again but no luck there.
So then I did a recovery cache wipe, flashed the recovery, and flashed the ROM again but still stuck.
In desperation I did a wipe... and deleted the actual ROM.zip.
Now I've tried to Sideload the .zip (and original oexed) but get stuck/fail when nearly done.
I've tried to download all the "EU" RUU's and install them but get either error 170 (USB) or error 155 (unknown)
Also tried to download RUU.zip but that didn't work either.
So now i'm stuck! If anyone could point me in the right direction that would be great!
Thanks!

Looks like you did not flashed arhd using twrp version 2.6.3.3.
flash twrp 2.6.3.3:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery name_of_recovery.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot-bootloader
then boot in recovery and adb push arhd:
Code:
adb push name_of_rom.zip /sdcard/
command prompt will be unresponsive for the duration of the push (5-15 min)
then in twrp 2.6.3.3 select "install" and browse to find arhd zip file, select it and swipe to flash then reboot phone.
forget about using a RUU because all RUU available for your phone require S-OFF. (downgrade)
Thank you so very much!
Works brilliantly now!!
Cheers mate! :highfive:
Waiting for device msg after recovery boot
Hi. Please, help me.
So I unlocked my M7 successfully. Then I've tried to make a recovery - I used CWM: recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.4.8-m7.
But something went wrong. Here's log:
C:\mini-sdk>fastboot boot recovery.img
downloading 'boot.img'... OKAY
booting... OKAY
But nothing happened, just screen with "root menu". I tried volume up and down - nothing. Power button - nothing. When I repeated command I got:
C:\mini-sdk>fastboot boot recovery.img
< waiting for device >
What can I do now? Why it went wrong?
In fact I don't even know what was my Android or Sense version after unlocking.

you can't boot recovery unless your on hboot 1.44
you have to flash the recovery to the phone to boot to it
Unlock the bootloader at HTCDEV
then from fastboot USB
Flash recovery TWRP 2.6.3.3
http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/m7
fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.3-m7.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot-bootloader

Oh, right! Thanks! My phone is working again.
@clsA
I rather ask than be sorry, so...
After my newbie recovery flashing I have now TWRP and CWM recoveries. How can I delete them (then I'd like to flash CWM once and proper)?
An second question: I'm not sure how to choose between recovery mode and standard. When I want to get to recovery I do it through fastboot. But is it enough to power down if in recovery and power up for standard mode?
Edit:
When in CW Manager I go to recovery mode I recover in TWRP recovery instead of CWM.

you don't have both recovery's ..when you installed TWRP it overwrites any other recovery. If your goal is to flash roms you want TWRP 2.6.3.3 on their.
What is CW Manager and why do you need it ?

Clockwork ROM Manager. It showed both recoveries - TWRP and CWM. But then I flashed Stock Recovery, then TWRP 2.6.3.3, then ROM, then again... Well, after few hours of searching, trying, learning differences between flash and boot, and adrenaline kicks when my HTC One didn't boot or stuck somewhere I manage to flash ARHD ROM. I'm quite proud of myself. I wonder though how much trash I left on phone after all of this (yeah, we girls like to have everything in order...)
And if I can - few more questions
I noticed that battery drain is much faster - I probably should calibrate it. Is there a best-for-ARHD-app, or any should be ok?
And in some apps, like Goodreads, I have now additional menu bar at the bottom. I'm sure there is some mode for removing it (specially if stock can do that), but I can't find it.

Theirs no left over trash on the phone (except the CW rom manager)
the phone works with partitions. Only one thing can occupy the partition at a time. Whatever you flashed last is all that's their.
The menu bar you mention is only their on GPe roms .. is this what your using ? Their should be no menu bar using ARHD 81

I'm using ARHD 82. I read the FAQ and I think it is that menu (although looks different than on stock Sense6):

9. How do I get rid of the 3-dot-menu?
As of the 4.2.2 update HTC introduced the Long-press-home-as-menu functionality, which also removes the black menu bar. Activate it under Settings -> Display -> Home Button.

but I don't have this option there.

It must be a really bad coded app ..that menu was gone by version 4.3 and your Rom is version 4.4.3 - 6.09.401.10

Yeah, they probably don't care about updating to Google changes. But it's not the same menu as 3 dot menu on Stock which was easy to hide. It's not really menu for an app, 3 dots button doesn't even work and rest of buttons is for phone navigation. Any ideas how to hide it?
Guys, I apologize in advance if this is wrong section for my question but it seems my searching powers are not as good as they used to be
I need help regarding HTC One M7_ul 801s PN0714000
This phone has problems with google processes being stopped and it has all kind of chinese apps and bloatware and I would like to install an european rom on it...Phone is s-offed, it has supercid and modelid is PN0711****
Now, I managed to find one kitkat zip file and tried to flash it with "fastboot flash zip" command but i keep getting remote:02 data length is too large...I tried renaming it to PN0714IMG.zip, it didn't help as well...
Is there anything else I should do(beside s-off and supercid) to be able to flash any rom on it, and should I rather go with RUU exe file...if so, can someone please point me out to a place where I can download official roms...I noticed that htc1gury is down...
One more thing, bootloader is locked, phone is not rooted and has no custom recovery installed, and I would like to keep it that way if possible...supercid and s-off were done with Java card, if it is an important info at all...
Please, let me know where I'm making a mistake and if you need any additional info....I apologize one more time if this is a wrong thread or if the answer was so obvious and I was so blind to find it
Tnx in advance....
will method 1 works on HTC one M8 ?
and if .. will i receive OTA update ?
Hello there,
today I tried to install a Custom ROM on my M7 for the first time.
So I unlocked my device with htcdev.com. Btw: it wasn't possible to skip step 11 and I'm using Mac.
So my device is currently unlocked with S-ON (as it can be seen in bootloader).
I want to flash custom recovery and my problem is step 7. ("In the Command Prompt type following command: fastboot boot recovery.img (this command might not with newer hboots)").
When I try this command (on Mac: fastboot-mac), my phone freezes with both ClockworkMod Touch [OFFICIAL] and TWRP. My hboot version is 1.61, maybe that's the problem as mentioned. But I don't want to flash a recovery, maybe I can't use that device after doing that.
Any tips for me?
Best regards

"fastboot boot recovery.img" was only possible on hboot 1.44. Flash your recovery using "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img". Use latest TWRP recovery.
thx, it worked. phew
Hello guys,
im new to the HTC world, mostly familiar with Sony devices, have a friend who has given me their HTC which isn't booting up, it only boots to the start screen then goes blank, she told me the phone was charging and there was a power surge wherever she was and since then the device misbehaves and doesn't boot past the start screen.
how can I flash it back to stock, as from my experience it seems like its a software issue.
