Hello all,
I'm planning to get a new Samsung Focus S off eBay within the next few months. They're selling as low as $350 shipping included so I figured I'd take advantage of the deal.
I currently have an LG Quantum (two of them, actually), which are loaded with apps and interop-unlocked. I can typically get 10-12 hours on a single charge, with moderate messaging and internet usage, email push @ 1 hour, etc.
I'm honestly not satisfied with that and hope this device has either similar or better battery life. What do you guys find your devices get? I'll be purchasing an extra battery with the Focus S by default, as I prefer to always be connected.
Also, is it possible to interop-unlock the Focus S, or is there custom ROMs available for it? Those two things are absolute musts.
And to anyone with a carrier unlocked Focus S, does MMS/picture messaging work?
Thanks.
*removed post*
I just got my S and trust me man, your gonna love it, battery gets me through my school day and sports afterwards returning home with about... 30% battery left? WiFi always on same with "4g". You can interop unlock it FREE by going to windowsbreak http://windowsphonehacker.com/windowbreak/ BUT so far no custom roms and I haven't gotten any info on development for 1. If you hear something keep me posted. I was also wondering about it SIM unlocked and if MMS and the likes work because I haven't even put mine on AT&T yet/ at all.
If you want a Focus S, now is the time to look for one. The market is a bit flooded after the "Smoked by Windows Phone" challenge down here, and Ebay US prices are now sub $300. In some cases, well below $300. Something to consider.

how many hours are we talking here? I usually go from 7 am to 4 pm on my quantum before its dead, usage dependant.

At least we know you can copy/paste
I found a great deal here on the xda marketplace for a lightly used Focus S, just in the final dealings right now. I'm still a slight bit concerned about battery life.

Maybe a little late to the party, but Id buy the phone.
I just picked up 2 of them for $200 each.
One off a friend and the other off craigslist.
These phones are a beauty.
Thanks! I got one for $180.. In the mail now.

Dude that's a steal! Yeah sorry I didn't comment on battery life, yeah that's from 6:30 AM to about 6:00 PM with moderate use, browser, texting, stream/playing music and light gaming. 12 hours with about a quarter fo third battery left. Good LUCK!
Its used, but appears to be in mint condition. I'm hoping to get it within a week. Thanks for the info - maybe I won't need a second battery for it, like I so depressingly do for my LG Quantum

this should be legit right? with all the fake battery threads and everything lately, i want to be very careful where i buy my battery from unless its from the verizon store. i think this is legit though, and a decent price cheaper than buying from verizon.

Yup, looks like the OEM one that I have. The fact that it comes with the back which says HTC is a pretty good indicator too

im gonna order it, no verizon within 500 miles of me has them in stock lol. kinda wanted it today, i hate waiting for shipping!
just ordered it for 42 shipped, cant wait for it to get here!

i saw those, i dont think those are legit OEM HTC batteries....
I've had mine for awhile and easily get through a day with a single charge. So legit or not they work. Stock battery I'd be lucky to make past lunch some days

I ordered it, 100% legit. It's a great upgrade for the phone. While it does look thicker, it's feel is actually better. You can easily get a full day out of this battery with heavy use. I purchased it as a 'when I need my phone all day' kinda battery. No worries.
Only thing is the back bezel doesn't come with the metal around the headphone jack. But the case is OEM.
Ultimately do what makes you comfortable. Just thought I'd share my experience. Everyone on these forums have been so helpful to me thought I'd put my 2 cts in. I was a little skeptical too. Battery is red and says HTC (easy enough to do) but received in 2 days and couldn't be happier. 2 best things about are not having to have an ugly hump and no longer having to hear my brother (ex iPhone user) ***** about the terrible battery life. So in short 2 people very happy with these.
Good luck with whatever you choose

I actually should have went with it to try it out, but i had already ordered the 2150. i actually like thicker phones, i cant stand thin phones, on my old g1 i used to have one of those like 3500 batteries and it was huge lol.
my friend has an inc and i know he wont want to get a thicker battery, so ill have him order the one you got. thanks for the review on it btw.
This battery is so worth the money. Got it last night, charged it (bump charged it) and been unplugged since 830am, and 7hrs later and I'm at 63%. Id be dead already on the stock battery.

Just ordered one. Will have it in a week hopefully. Lets hope The dev. On this will be good.

I am very interested in it...Trying to see some reviews/opinions on it first before purchasing. What do you guys think so far of it?
I just went and played with one in the store today. I'm purchasing a tablet as soon as my refund comes, and don't want to shell out big bones for a 10 inch. I've decided Galaxy Tab or Dell Streak. I was impressed with the Streak, and with Samsungs update history, I will be getting the Streak. Next week! YES!
I got one after I read all the reviews. I don't think the Streak 7 got a fair shake. I am happy with it. It is fast. It has HSPA+ and wifi tether. I'm not to concerned with battery life. I wish my T-Mo store got more cases for it. All they got in were purple gel skins.
Im stuck I just got the nexus s and I have the streak 5 but streak 7 is fail you can't make normal calls like dell pushed

I went ahead and got it because I got the subsidized price. It's very fast and works great....viewing angles can be tough at times but aside from that, I am happy with it
I got one but I'm probably returning it tomorrow for a Galaxy Tab. Half the batttery life, worse screen resolution and no phone will make me switch to the Galaxy Tab eventhough it's both older and more expensive.
Anyone care to share if you think there will be ROMs that allows one to use the phone?
Picked my 7 up today. 249.00 - 50.00 credit for telling them I got an email with code STREAK4G and -50.00 rebate = 149.00 = Me Happy.
The resolution is fine for me. I found the Galaxy Tabs web text a little too small for me.
So for all who are interested. Have had mine for 2 days now and I absolutely love it. The battery life doesn't bother me much. Getting about 3 hours of nonstop browsing and game playing. The viewing angle could be better but the way I see it means people sitting near you can't see clearly what your doing. Lol
I am a Tmobile customer and just let me say the 4G on this thing is crazy fast compared to my G2 phone. I love the 4G speed on my phone but the Streak 7 just seems to get a better signal. Could possibly be because the antenna may be larger.
If there are any other questions feel free to ask. I will be more than happy to test something for you.
I am going to hold out on rooting it until I start getting bored with what it can do now.

I picked one up...
I picked up the Streak7 on Tuesday. A previous poster commented on the battery life and I have to concur -- But I think I found the culprit -- It's the Cellular Radio. When it's on, it will drop 18-20% in an hour. I really thought the dual-core CPU would be the issue but it really isn't.
I will say this -- It's fast as hell! I couldn't be happier with the speed for launching apps, scrolling, yada yada. You'd sort of expect that with a dual-core CPU, though, right?
I think that same poster made a comment about the display. I have to admit, I'm pretty disappointed. Samsung, I think, I did a better job here. Unfortunately, my Galaxy Tab is on Sprint, doesn't appear to work with Rom Manager and I haven't been able to install a different mod on it yet. *sigh* Oh, how I wish Cyanogen was available for BOTH the GTab and Streak7. Sooo much better than that stock crap they put on there.
I just picked mine up today . One thing I can say its way faster than my vibrant and G2. I just hope I would be abel to put honeycomb on it

I'm going to stop by the T-Mobile store today and see how it looks/feels in person before deciding if I want one. Also, I'm going to hold off on any decisions until some honeycomb ports start showing up. Still, it looks very promising from everything I've seen. If I get it though, it will be off contract and I plan on using it on wifi only since I don't live in an HSPA+ area.
Hellzya, Yeah I ordered as soon as I got the email form dell stating they were available. Had been waiting on it I'm pretty excited.
As much as i have loved my revolution, ill have to make due with parting. Between my career field, situation and the issues I'm going to a Gnex. Permavibe, reboots more constant than a 10 time repeat prison offendor every few hours, lost calls due to above, and performance (me being a game developer) I need to move on lol. Wanted to say how great of a support this place has been with keeping an everything but dor (dead on release) phone alive this long. Ill keep popping in to help where I can (i mildly realize I'm not exactly prevalent here) thanks to the help I've gotten, but at these prices a Gnex is (very!) hard to pass up. I find that odd, its the best thing Ive ever made a call on. Maybe its denver though, the 4g is quite consistent here, and the 3g comes in spades. There was one point (for maybe 2 hours before a party) that on my OG droid I was hitting 2.6mbps on 3g, when the theoretical limit is 3.1, I was shocked. Now to try some of the "hot" spots Ive found. These are just areas Ive found that make my 4g speeds spike, and where I can consistently get 40-50mbps.
Right off the bat with 2-3 bars I got 25mbps down and 14 up, which is twice what my revo might get (same app + server even). Plus this was in a Denver Verizon store, so you know they show off the 4g to whomever comes in lol.
I certainly wish I could jump ship, but I'm not due an 'upgrade' until february... Unless I can convince big red to push it early due to my phone being a giant pile, I'm stuck with the vibration of death, slow performance, reboots, and screen freezing for another 8 months

Well, if you hate the phone that much might as well just pay the early termination fee and get a new phone. Luckily I have till August might try and get the S3 when it comes out and give myself a birthday present.
Seriously.....dig deep, sell some crap on Craigslist, donate at the plasma bank....whatever. Just bite the bullet, scrape together $400 and buy a RAZR Maxx off of Ebay. Revo is at a dead end. I finally quit b!tching and just replaced the damn doorstop POS. When I went into VZW store to get the micro SIM to activate the RAZR, the staff confirmed the Revo is by far the most hated model in their 4G lineup, and they all hated selling it. Moving on was the smartest thing I've done.

Probably the battery. But I'd take the more development and better specs of the S3 over the better battery.
Well...for people looking to jump ship who have concern about the money, there's about a $250 difference.
Battery life is huge for me, and I've missed that battleship-solid build quality I always had with Motorola. For my $400, it made no sense to suffer with a C-minus phone any longer.
I run rooted stock ICS...so beyond rooting it, I don't need much dev --- although there is quite a lot for the RAZR....far, far more than there will ever be here...for a younger phone. 'nuff said.

The build quality of Motorola phones in my opinion are pretty good since my brother has the Droid X (first one not the X2) and it's decent but I'm going to go to Samsung and give them a chance until more high end Motorola and HTC phones hit Verizon.
Found a great deal! GNex, dual incipio case, 3 anti glare screen protectors, 1 very nicely pre applied, and extended battery for $258. Does everything my revo did and then some, and I haven't even rooted it yet. Wifi tether included.

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
It probably more than covers your dad's needs. Unless you anticipate your father becoming a power user and desiring the latest and greatest games and OS releases the N1 should be fine. A ton of apps, calendar, contacts, email, texting, camera and browser are all there. I have a pair of N1's here that I kept for standbys in case one of our other phones has a problem but honestly I don't think my wife would notice the difference if she didn't have her Sensation 4G. I just asked her what would she miss if she had to go back to the N1 full time and the only thing she could think of is that the N1 is smaller. At $79 it's a nice entry point for someone who doesn't know whether or not they will like a "smartphone."
Thanks for the info. He honestly wouldn't know the difference. I have never owned a Nexus One and wasn't sure if it was too outdated to even consider. I was going to give him GS1 before it broke, but comparing online they have pretty identical specs and I know my GS1 is perfectly capable for him.

Have you taken into consideration the "illnesses" of this device? Namely awful digitizer (touch occasionally going "crazy")?
I'd suggest getting something else in the same price range. I lived with this device for over a year when it was young, but my wife couldn't stand it even for 3 months.

Yeah it's more than capable for an entry level user who probably won't ever need all the features. My father-in-law got a low-end android phone from AT&T earlier this year. 2 weeks later he was returning it.

Lol just made me think of having to press slightly above center on the "hard" keys to get response. It's not the only phone I've had that kind of issue with though. It didn't overshadow my time with the N1. Had it from launch and still have it. Not my daily phone anymore but it's decent enough for a backup that sits in the car or drawer.
I got my Nexus 4 RMA'd. I was fairly satisfied with my original Nexus 4's battery, it lasted a day solid, with some change. I still tried my best to squeeze more battery out of it, cause I didn't want to cut it so close. Anyway, after I RMA'd it and got my new model (with the little plastic feet) I noticed a HUGE difference in battery life. I'm talkin' 50-70% more battery life! I'm running the same franco kernel, and having even underclocked or undervolted, and also using Juice Defender Plus (Also had that on my previous N4). Anyway, the difference is night and day, so I'm certain they improved the battery in the newer N4's. Also I held my friends N4 that he bought the same time I got my first one, and mine feels significantly denser. Anyway, just wanted to let you guys know, if you're not happy with your battery life, maybe you should consider getting it RMA'd and if you were holding out from buying a N4 because of the battery life, this might make the difference.

and at the end of the day I have 20% battery life. I can last another day with that, as long as I dont wifi or youtube too much.

All i want to say is that if you flashed franco kernel you get 4-5 hours SOT and on moderate use 20-22 hours work time,it doenst matter what is your model 301k,302k or newer..
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
I had franco kernel on my previous N4 (not sure what xxxK version this one is) and have seen a MASSIVE improvement in battery life with this newer one, BEFORE trying to implement battery saving techniques. I'm convinced by that and the weight difference that the battery has been improved.
When you say consider getting in RMA'd, how would I do that? Doesn't there have to be some fault with it - the only fault I think I have is the rattling back?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
I can relate to this, my friend got a new n4 and i was on 79% batter with 23 mins screen on time and he was on 93% with half hour.. its a joke
With the same hardware and software, the only way to improve the battery life, is to increase the battery capacity (mAh). So today, the only way is to increase battery size.

This is probably related to the 4.2.2 issue I saw in another thread
Basically people were getting better battery life by flashing the stock 4.2.2 image and then reflashing their custom kernels/ROMs
Since the new Nexus 4 came with 4.2.2 on it, it probably bypassed having to do those steps. I doubt the battery is different at all..
LOL with all the RMAs I think google is going to put up a new page for refurbished nexus 4 models.
Hopefully they learn from it and not f*** up the next nexus launch, Jesus Christ this phone has been nothing but a disaster

Just to let everyone know I haven't ever done an rma in my life, and I have bought a nexus 7, 10, and now 4. But if a product is significantly better less than one month after I buy it I would like to enjoy that.
Sent from my Nexus 4 on Solavei network!
It's probably just placebo effect. Unless we have some hard evidence ("weight" and "feel" won't cut it) we can only assume the battery is the same. At the most, it might have something to do with heat dissipation and containment regarding battery current flow in the newer models.

Nothing is "significantly better". All these RMA's make it sound like everyone on this forum has some severe form of OCD. A few people's non-scientific observations don't make anything better or worse. Just live with what you have, it's not like you're missing out on anything. If there was a "significant" improvement, Google would have just incorporated everything into the Nexus 5 and released that instead.
I got a 303k. Noticed exceptional battery even while I'm stock rooted. I use it semi heavily so the battery is surprising. I get a full day out of it unlike on my s3.
