[Q] Bricked? - Motorola Droid 4

I was attempting to work through applying the .218 update to my droid 4. It was giving me a system validation error while when it was running in recovery. I found a thread that stated I needed to replace the apks and odex's as well as the build.prop. I didn't read it carefully enough as it said to replace *THE* problem ones. My validation error was on the build.prop file, I think.
In any case, I was using root explorer to copy *ALL* the files from a base zip file's app folder into the /system/app folder. Things were going along fine, until the phone app forced closed, then the phone rebooted.
Now I'm boot looping.
What can I do? I don't have any safe straps.

Can't access safestrap? Stock recovery? Adb services?

thanks for the reply...
I don't have safestrap installed on the device, and I've never used it. I don't think that's an option, unless you have something up your sleeve there
As for Stock recovery, I'd love to give it a try, but I don't know how that would work. I can't get to ADB because I can't boot the phone.
I *CAN* get into the bootloader. From there, I can get into recovery, AP Fastboot, BP SBF Flash BP boot... and others.
So, I'm hoping there's some kind of way to push to the device from one of the boot loader options. I've had a Droid 1, and a number of other android devices, but I've never gotten this far into a hole before.
again... thanks for whatever you got

It doesn't look good my friend, not without a SBF to flash. The only thing I can think of off the top of my head would be to try flashing the update again and cross your fingers that you got things in place before the bootloop. However I'm 99.9% sure that won't work. If I find anything else I'll let you now, but at this point you might be a sitting duck.

I have the update on the SD Card, and nope, flashing it results in the same system validation error, and a bootloop.
thanks. Do you think that flashing the RAZR sbf's would get me a booting device? I only got the thing 14 days ago. Maybe I can exchange it

If you're still in the 14 day return window I would try to return it. If it can't get past the bootloader than they won't know you rooted it. Just tell them you tried to do the update and it bootlooped. That's probably you're safest bet.

I'm heading down there in a few minutes. Thanks for the help all ! I think I'm getting the razr maxx. My wife has one and the screen on that thing is incredible. I think it's worth losing the keyboard to get that screen... and the battery life. That part is also incredible.

You can use bp tools to push over a clean system. I believe theres a tutorial somewhere that written for bionic. Just replace that with the droid 4 system. I would extract it from one of the stock roms available and push it thru bp tools.

Can you link that tutorial? I'm also trying to figure out how to use adb via stock recovery. Thanks!

It sounds like OP is going to exchange their phone, but could you really just replace the entire /system folder and have it work? (Nothing special with permissions, etc?)
If so, that is definitely something worth knowing...

Yes i believe so.

Does anyone have the bloatware that came with this device? I will be shipping back my revo to Verizon in exchange for another phone, and I'm back on the stock room, but I'm missing bloatware. Also, how can I get the stock boot image back? I think they'll realize I was rooted when they see the Droid boot animation lol .

If you have a back up from when you first rooted it should give you the stock boot.img. Then flash the stock rom found in the dev section. Then using revotoolkit.apk reinstall stock recovery. Then gingerbreak to unroot. Then update to zv6 from the about phone area and you should be good to go.

I formatted my SD card recently, and kept my latest backup , but not my original
Is there anything I can do in regards to the boot.img?
Could someone be kind of enough to make a CWR zip file for me?
I'll even pay you $5 bucks or whatever sounds good.

My recommendation would be to flash this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1129117
If it gives you the option to update, perhaps you should try that, and it may unroot your phone.
As far as CWM, I doubt the clerks are going to play with recovery... (that's not a guarantee, however).
If you are really desperate and scared, you should use the VZW tool for reflashing the phone, but I AM NOT RECOMMENDING IT. The tool has been known to do bad things to phones that need expert help to undo if not done properly (not only that, it's a pain in the arse).
Can I flash the boot image from that nandroid?
I was going to use the tool to run the downgrade again but I keep getting errors that I was not getting when I first rooted the phone. Mostly .msi installer package errors when selecting the .tot file.
If its in there it should be fine. If not i can make a zip of the stock boot.img when i get home but it will be about 7 central time.

I don't think the boot image was included with the earlier ROMs. I *probably* have a few boot images from when I was working with Cubed on CWR, but I don't know which is which, and some of those actually can cause bricks. Boot image was p8? I don't even remember now.
As far as selecting the .tot file, it requires the support files... They come with the LGNPST Store & Lab... they would look like:
LGNPST_GenericModels_Ver_3_0_17_0.msi
I'm not positive which one is the right one as it's been a long time. Sorry this is vague, but I went through the process once, and then never again.
The person whose phone we recovered through this method had an issue after the flash where everything looked kosher, but the data would no longer work (no 3g, 4g, etc), and required Cubed's intervention to repair. So I haven't touched it since.

One-Click Fastboot Restore to recover from bootloop or softbrick

Thanks to dhacker29 for the orginal idea and script!
Check out his orginal post for the Droid Bionic here!
Also, thanks to kennethpenn for providing the files you are about to use!
You have to be unlocked to use this!!
I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY THING THAT HAPPENS TO YOU OR YOUR PHONE!
I will try to help as much as possible, but that does not allow you to hold me responsible for anything whatsoever.
Step 1. Download this zip file and extract it, putting all the files in a folder.
Step 2. Download the file "One-Click Fastboot Restore.zip" and extract it, putting all the files in the same folder as the one above.
Step 3. Run the .bat file and follow the instructions.
DO NOT FIX PDS PARTITION UNLESS NECESSARY! IT WILL WIPE YOUR MAC ADDRESS FOR WIFI AND BLUETOOTH!
(Found some typos, not serious. Will fix soon)
No comments yet? I take that as a good sign, I haven't screwed up the script!

I'm also curious what exactly it does. At 140k it isn't replacing very much. Does it just fix files related to booting?
Didnt run it because I'm on linux and my phone is fine, but looking at the batch file, it automates flashing the stock gingerbread rom and restores PDS via fastboot.
when I run it, it gives me AdbWinApi.dll error. any suggestions?
I ran this for ****s and giggles and it returns everything back to stock AT&T 2.3 while giving you options along the way of what exactly you wanna restore to stock? webtop, system, pds, wipe data etc. works perfectly! makes life easier really! Phone booted right up after running no problems! Thanks!

It restores your phone back to stock AT&T android via fastboot automatically. It also gives you the option to *fix* your pds partition.
It's also an alternative to RSD

Pardon my ignorance, i'm trying to restore a bricked Atrix 4G for a friend. It gave error Failed to boot SVF 105:1:2 0x1000 after bad upgrade. Is it possible to use this as a solution? How can i find that out? and in any case, i have downloaded all files, what's the correct procedure to do this?

Well, been trying but haven't been able to do anything with it. I mean I never used it before and seems like it needs to boot into fastboot mode which I haven't been able to do.
Is in any way possible to make the phone boot into that via usb cable with this software? I installed all requiered software including drivers but it never detected the phone in that (bricked) state, not even once. The phone turns a green light when u connect the usb without battery in, thats it.
I haven't found any solution yet, only seen ppl saying to buy a new one. Is this brick really that bad that there's absolutely no solution? And it all seems to be caused by lack of SBK as ive read on the net...
Well if there's any good news I would like to hear them

[NEEDED] 6.893 100% stock backup

Does anyone have a backup of 6.893?
Typically I am very diligent, but somehow I forgot to make a backup of stock.
I have not switched to any other update. I have read through everything thoroughly and I apologize for failing to follow instructions. With 5 android devices and multiple flashes I have never missed this before. And I realized it as soon as I flashed TH3ORYS rom
From what I gather the easiest and most effective way to get back on track is to flash a stock 6.893 rom make a backup and move on from there.
I appreciate anyone's help!
I am also open to using this thread or creating one in delopment to post the stock roms of every version.

Not entirely true. His system will be back to 5.5.886, but his kernel/radio will be his previously upgraded 5.6.893. He is off the upgrade path until he gets the matching system file of 5.6.893. Only then can he continue updating. I just went through this exact thing, used the one step recovery, but went back to .886 and had to beg to find someone to send me a CWR back up of their 5.6.893, which got me back on track.
Oh yeah...nevermind. I completely thought you were wanting stock not the ota. That's what I get for speed reading.

Giving someone a backup made on your device or restoring a backup made on someone else's device is an extremely foolhardy proposition. You are cloning the Android_id from one device to the other, which means that apps that use it as an identifier will push and pull data from both devices without any intervention from the unknowingly affected user.
system img
correct me if im wrong but, all we need is the system img right because im stuck with a hybrid

Check your pms and please don't share in case there is some of my data still left in the backup. just download all the files and put them in a folder and put in your clockwork backup folder on your sd/ext, probably the best way is to restore with advanced restore and just restore system only.

I have really been through the ringer today. I started off this morning by noticing that I had no data at all. I was on 6.893 and TH3ORYROM 2.1 and have been for a few days with no trouble until today when I lost data. I tried everything to get it back, but nothing. I called VZW to make sure there wasn't a network problem in my area and they suggested that I try everything that I had already done (bat. pull, sim card re-register, turn off LTE radio, etc). When they couldn't fix anything, they wanted to transfer me to tier 2 tech support, but they apparently need to talk to me on a different phone so they can diagnose this one, but I didn't have access to another phone. So I decided I would try to flash one of the updates hoping it would reflash the radio file and wake it up. When I got home, I used the R3L3AS3DRoot to restore to stock and tried to install 7.893, but the update failed. I searched around and tried every method I could to get any of the updates to install, but nothing worked, still no 3g either. Eventually, in my desperate attempt to fix this myself I decided to wipe everything and start over. I wiped the webtop partition. I think that's what really screwed me up, because nothing else I did was any different that what I've done in the past. After wiping everything, I went back to the R3L3AS3DRoot and tried to run it. No matter which option I selected, it seemed to run fine, but I couldn't boot past the fastboot screen. I tried to fxz using RSD Lite, but every flash I tried failed. Then, in a panic, I came across P3's moto-fastboot method used to "get you back on the update path". I ran that and it freaking worked!! Then I figured I'd try to get up to 7.893, but I've tried absolutely everything I can find mention of and nothing works. Every install fails. I am getting some intermittent 3G now though. And to top it all off, I discovered that none of the nandroid backups I've made will restore and most of them don't even exist. I just discovered that I needed to check "use external storage" for the backups to take. I thought I had been covering my ass by making backups, but they weren't valid. Currently I have stock, rooted phone with an intermittent 3G signal. System Version 5.5.886, baseband CDMA_N_03.1C.57RLTEDC_U_05.15.02, kernel [email protected] #1, and build number 5.5.1_84_DBN-55. As I sit now, my plan is to see how it acts tomorrow and if I still have a lot of trouble with data, I will return it to stock unrooted and take it into a Verizon store and see if they will let me try a new SIM card. I don't really know what else to do at this point.

246 install issues

My friend wanted the 246 update to his phone. So we put the file on it his sd card. If fail at verifying package, by accident he it install again. We tried reapplying the package on the phone from a different phone. The phone failed to update at the same line. It is not the package it is the phone. I used the same package on a different Bionic (not mine) no issue.
Right now his phone wont go past the moto splash screen. Is there anything we can do to fix it?

Sounds like the system files on the phone have been modified by a rooted application. In other words, the phone isn't completely "stock" anymore, and the update verifies that the system is still the way Verizon wants it to be before applying the update.
You may end up having to flash your phone back to 905 and apply the update again.

I cannot get OTA to install either. I am stock rooted with 4ever root and also have voodoo. No frozen apps. I get the android unpacking screen then get a triangle with exclamation point and it reboots. I have tried rooted and using temporary unroot with voodoo. I've read Safestrap needs to be uninstalled, is it so for Bootstrap also, because I do have Bootstrap installed. House of Bionic mirrors have been broken until this morning, so I'm in the process of downloading the OTA file now, but, I expect the result will be the same (just won't have to keep downloading it from verizon after every failed install). Get rid of anything resembling root or custom bootstraps. I would FXZ to 905 to be honest (if you have never gone past .232!!), and just wipe it all out. After OTA, use motofail or HoB to root it again, and all is good in the world.

Yes, I read your post, just as I read this one. You said it "could" be due bootstrap, while I appreciate your efforts to help in that attempt, that was not a definitive answer. I was hoping someone more knowledgeable could give me a more meaningful answer so I could focus my efforts where they were going to matter. Hypothetically, someone who knew the answer to this may have chosen not to respond to your post and only when they saw the question posed later, decided to answer. For example, are there any responses to the post you are referencing, which, you think I didn't read? Waiting....uh, NO. Are there any responses to my post? Two helpful and one completely not. I'll let you figure out which is which. So let me take this opportunity to thank meturne2 and digitalr0gue (even if you did insinuate that I didn't read the post) for the useful answers. But, if you promise to hold your breath, I will give you a thanks for your oh so helpful post. Really, I will
BTW what the heck is a krakhen, is that like a prostitute chicken on coke? Guess the Norse mythology spell checker wasn't working, huh.

It's kind of hard for me to give someone a definite answer about bootstrap if they don't say they have it installed or not. If they give no details about what they have on their system, it could be bootstrap. How am I supposed to give a definite answer about it being bootstrap if they don't say they have bootstrap installed. Chances are is that most people who are having problems, are having them due to either safestrap, bootstrap, or some other mod installed. If they don't have any mods installed, then the issue would probably be bootstrap or safestrap. Since I cannot look at their phone to see for sure, then yeah, it is a probably. If you can read someone mention something about it probably being bootstrap, wouldn't it be easier to look into it instead of asking another question thats probably already been asked at least 10 times through the various forums.. Most of these things can be found if you look.

Thanks in advance!

Having the same issues as you, did you ever get your update installed? I did the whole voodoo thing but the update still failed. I have unfrozen all apps. I am stock. Any light you could shine on this issue would be a great help! Thanks!

If you're really that stuck, you can find the .246 fxz file and use RSDLite to flash it to your device. You'll lose everything on your internal SD card, but the external will be fine. For the .246 fxz file, google "bionic 246 fxz xda" and for the instructions on how to do this, google " [GUIDE] Easiest Step-By-Step Tutorial For Upgrading Your Bionic To ICS". Both should come up with xda links to the applicable topics.

Do you have bootstrap or safestrap still installed? If so, it won't install and you will have to remove them first for it to install.
If you have any hacks installed, you will also have the same problem with it not installing. Everything has to be stock and not modified for updates to install.

So if I remove Bionic bootstrap I will be able to do the update without the RSDLite method? I am not sure I want to go the RSDLite way, scares me that I might mess something up. I have done no other mods or hacks, but do have the bootstrap installed.
I guess my next question would be, if removing bionic bootstrap does not allow me to update, can I not just do a factory reset and reinstall all my apps?
Thanks for helping me out!

Broken out of the box?

Hey guys, I do no not own this phone (just picked up a Nexus 5) but, my dad does. He has been waiting for MONTHS to get his hands on this. It is his first Android device and he was able to ditch his work iPhone for it. However, he has been having an absolutely horrible experience:
I was remotely walking him through setup (moto transfer with iCloud to gmail account, etc etc).
- He turned on his phone, set up wifi, entered account credentials, played around for a minute or two.
- After this, he was prompted for an update, I told him to accept it
- After he accepted it, the phone WILL NOT TURN on. It boots to the homescreen, says it is "activating" the device, then it needs to restart.
- When it restarts, he sees the following attached screenshot.
I am assuming this was the Kit Kat update. I know tons of people have had problems with this (yes, I read the forums before posting, even though it is not my device). However, everyone with problems seemed to be rooted/not on stock. He is COMPLETELY stock.
If he chooses to reboot normally, he gets the homescreen, activation, then, it turns off and goes back to the attached screen.
If he chooses recovery, it goes back to this screen.
I'm not sure how an OTA could jack a phone up that was completely stock.. But it has happened.
Is there anything I can do remotely to help him start using his new phone? As I said, he has been excited for months for this phone and now just wants to throw it against the wall.
Is this screenshot the fastboot screen? If so, can I use the "fastboot erase cache" command?
Any *detailed* answers would be greatly appreciated... I'd love to get this working for him ASAP.
Thanks everyone!

This is a pretty horrible out of box experience for something he was so excited about. I'm hoping this is something I can just do while remotely controlling his PC... I feel bad for the guy

Not having this phone myself, how do I flash a recovery if I can't access current recovery or boot? Can I flash with a locked bootloader? Is the screen my dad is seeing the fastboot screen?
Any ideas how a stock out of the box phone would encounter this?
Thanks!
Sorry it's just hard to not have a device and jump into this when there are a million threads and it is completely different than any device I've owned (also I have no hands on time with it).
Thanks again. The more details the better so that I can do this remotely.

Ok. I will have to figure out how to flash sbfs via fastboot then. I'm assuming it is a simple set of commands. I will try and find a tutorial when I am not driving. Thanks

He's on Verizon, 16gb.
So confused as to how this happens fresh out of the box. Don't know how it's possible. I'm determined to fix it for him today though so he doesn't have to wait even longer

If he just bought it, why are you messing around with this? Take it back to the retailer you bought it from and tell then what happened... Get a new phone...

He got it customized from MotoMaker... If it's a relatively simple fix (and it's not a hardware issue) I'd rather do it myself so he doesn't have to wait yet again for who knows how long.

I'm assuming I can use any of the builds from verizon there? I'd like to get him to update OTA and see if it works this time or not... Was thinking about flashing one of the three 4.2.2 ones

EmperorX I work for Moto. If you wouldn't mind providing the IMEI I'll get our engineers to take a look. You can PM me. Thanks!
I found this toolkit:
However, i'm assuming the fastboot menu will not work to just flash stock as you need to be in "Android or hboot"
The fastboot screen I took the picture of is not the same thing as hboot correct?
They are interchangeable terms. Hboot refers typically to an HTC bootloader

Awesome, looks like I may be able to fix this for him after all. Just need to remotely get androidsdk and adb setup on his computer with RSDlite as backup if this toolkit doesn't work and I *should* be able to make this happen. I think i've got enough info to do this now. Thanks guys!

He was on the phone with Motorola "tier 2" support this morning for 3 hours. Their solution was to order a new phone and expedite shipping and return the old one when it gets here. I'm going to try this way first. They said this happens to "1 in 10,000" people. Lol, he's a lucky guy!
Well, now it's stuck on the fastboot screen with the following error:
No valid PIV block in SP for system
piv validation failed (system)
boot up failed

Sounds like the phone's partitions are all jacked up. Get a new phone is the solution.

what probably happened was your dad never activated the phone then tried to take an ota or something like that and it got all jacked up. Alternatively, he could have (for some reason) gotten the 4.4 OTA even though the phone was on original stock FW. This could have f'd the phone up if it skipped the 4.2.2 OTA. If you need to help you dad out, download teamviewer or logmein (remote computer access programs) and just guide him through when to plug the phone in etc.
Not sure about the error you are getting but it could be because you are flashing the wrong FW for the phone, possibly an older FW or an updated FW and the order you are flashing it could be causing the error. You can fix this relatively easily if you were more familiar with fastboot. I can try and walk you through some stuff as well on gchat if you need some help. I could also remote into your dads computer and do everything that needs to be done (he could then remove my ability to remote in clearly). All that being said Im fairly busy so just answering some questions for you would be easier but more time consuming for your dad. For starters, you probably should be flashing the 4.2.2 FW found on sbf. it is the middle fw for verizon on the list. You also can probably just use rsdlite since he hasn't set the phone up. It is super easy. Just go to the thread for rsd lite back to 100% stock and you will be good to go. Then make sure he activates and sets the phone up and everything before he takes the OTA this time.
