Galaxy note or HTC one x - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Which would you reconend from the 2 devices in the title and why? Thanks for any input
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using Tapatalk

You do realize you're only going to get biased answers here, right?
I went for the Note because it has a bigger screen, a stylus, a replaceable battery and an sdcard slot.

Likewise...mainly for the screen size... I mean I have friends who all have 4.6 in down and it looks absolutely normal from spectator's, I on the other hand love the attention - yrs spec wise HTC one x does outweigh the phablet - you can compare this to apple laptops vs Sony, HP... the Macs have the lower specs overall yet people buy it for its unique looks and simplicity...(probably why the upcoming windows 8 look so much simpler than W7)
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA

It pretty much come down to this
GNote: Battery life and huge beautiful screen
One X: Quad-core
I don't think quad is needed as of now, so I would pick the GNote

Another "me-too" phone with higher-end specs (One X) vs. a genuinely unique, niche device (phablet with Wacom digitizer; N7000).
Seems like two different markets.

the main improvements over the note come from the one x's quad core CPU. if you compare them both in GPU benchmarks at the same ressy, they both perform quite similarly. when nvidia announced that the tegra3 would be 3x faster... they were comparing it to the tegra2.
so the main improvement will be in web browsing (android browser supports quads), smoother interface, and improvements in apps that support multicores (very few do aside from benches).
the only thing that peeves me about the one x is that it doesnt have a microsd slot, but im sure i can work around that with a usb on the go adapter since the htc one x supposedly has an mhl port.
at the moment, im just waiting for the other quad core phones to launch to see if there are any gems. the LG 4X interests me with its expandable storage (support for 64gb microSD), but it doesnt support the 850mhz band on 3G which would be bad for me since vodafone AU has a better 850mhz network than it does with its 900mhz network. theres also the galaxy s3 (same mali gpu but with quad core, so should perform on par with tegra3) and theres a fujitsu tegra 3 phone that has a 13.1mp camera and expandable storage coming soon as well, which should be quiet interesting.
i generally buy my phones outright... so when theres competition, theres a price drop, and thats a win for everyone!

Im gona put my Note in the drawer until ICS and probably get an One X just because i wanna surf the web from its stock web browser flawlessly in contrast to Note's choppy stock browser that loses its hardware acceleration all the time which is a big let down for me.

Well what are you looking for in a phone ?
Mainly to play games, browse social network etc ?
These are the questions i asked myself. And all answers seemed to point to the note

quadcore better than dual core.

True! Although i'd get smooth browsing by flashing one of the custom ics roms available in the dev section, i wont have a complete and stable rom with all the features that samsung is going to include in the final ics rom! So i'll be patient rather than flash ics just to see 4.0.3 under Android Version..

wait to see tomorrow what is introduced from Samsung as the next galaxy and wenn will it be on market, maybe a S3 withing next week's dunno, if you want the phone for videos check the issue with the blacks on them for the note it may be annoying if you can't live with it. ;-)

Galaxy Note
I was able to play with a demo unit of the HTC One X and I have to be frank after having used the Galaxy Note since November the screen size and quality has just become so familiar that holding anything smaller just feels odd. I might be biased to the Galaxy Note for now as there doesn't seem to be any apps that utilize all four cores and any gaming I might do would be on a PS Vita or Nintendo DS.

Ahahaha true that...today I looked at my friends iPhone 4 and I just straight laughed into his face and knew why without me referring to my note....I actually would purchase a 5.5in phone if it ever came to it...actually getting hooked to these big devices though I think the note is normal...

So there are problems with video playback on the note? Also are the custom roms as easy to flash as they are on my HTC sensation?
Thanks

[Q] What will be your next phone?

Hello fellow SGS owners, I love my phone but I also get bored easily.
So which phone will you be getting next?
I'm thinking either
Xperia play - Hardly an upgrade but will make playing games a lot more fun especially old snes/gba games like mario/racing etc which really need a gamepad
Galaxy s2 - This is a good phone the next 1 has got to be good also right?
Evo 3d - Super specs but not even official in uk.
I also have another motive, a 20% discount card for o2 (shop in uk) which means I will be able to pick up a play for about £350 - The card is only valid till the end of the month so I'm guessing there is no chance of getting the evo but maybe just maybe the S2 will be released in time
So what would you do? or is there something else you are after?
Galaxy s2, but more than happy with sgs 1 at minute, for emulators I use a zeemote anyway so not bothered about xperia play.

Galaxy S II.
I think my next choice would be tegra 2 based. Just because of the support nvidia can get.
Which makes me disappointed that the galaxy s 2 may not be tegra 2 depending on the region. Also I personally prefer 4 inch screens.
The atrix has a higher screen resolution meaning that it gets less fps in games. And its pentile LCD which isn't the best. Amoled pentile is great as we all know. But non amoled pentile is known for its screen door effect.
Which leaves the LG optimus x2. Great ips LCD, not quite amoled, but good. And tegra 2. Perfect size screen.
LG optimus x2 for me.
Although doesn't the optimus 3D use the sgx 540, same gpu that's in the sgs, but overclocked and it kicks the tegra 2's ass if I remember rightly.
Good old sgs hardware
Tmobile G2x(optimus 2x in other region) because of the almost vanilla android experience, it is tegra, cyanogen will be supporting it. and its simple and affordable. No more no less and easy to hack? Haha lol
My other options is optimus 3d cause of omap4 and SG2 only just because of its looks.
Infuse 4g

Think I will be sticking with my Sx2 for a good while yet.
I'm waiting until the sgs3 to switch. Dual core is only three times performance of single while quad is fifteen times single core. I buy unlocked so I might as well keep what I have for a while and then get the absolute most for my money when I do upgrade.

SGS 2!!!!! Galaxy Series Rocks!!
Even though I swore I would never get another Samsung phone after the i8910, I now have the Galaxy S & next will be the S2.
Sgs2

If you really need / want a new phone then wait for SGS II but i would advise you to save your money and don't waste it on mobiles.
i heared rumors of the streak 2 could be my next one dell seams to leave the bootloader open don't they?
perhaps i'll go with the evo 3d i am into that whole 3d stuff but if a nexus s 2 or a nexus2 is on the horizon that would with the right specs be my choice above all
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
The Galaxy S II
Lol not a lot of love for the Play then.
That is pretty much my thoughts but I think I needed you guys to convince me not to go for the Play now.
Here is a question though, if I get to the end of the month and no other phones have been released should I buy a xperia play for £350? do you think I'll be able to sell it on a few month on for about that amount?
By the time my contract runs out my next phone will be quad core
maybe the Galaxy S3 when it gets released next year or if there is something better, then that, currently i have no reason to switch, the performance is great of the SGS, we have the latest Android, maybe we get the next one also and if not then we have maybe a really stable CM7 or CM8, for me it needs more then just dualcore to get me on a new phone.
Galaxy S 2 for sure. Galaxy is the best phone I've ever used by a mile. Modded to the max.
Also got an iPhone 4 (completely modded) but that phone is just a joke. Feels 2 years older than my S.

[Q] How many of you on Bell have the Raider 4G?

I just placed an order yesterday for this new phone.
This will be my first android, giving the iPhone 4 that I currently use to my little sister.
Specs seem decent:
1.2GHz Dual Core
4.5" qHD screen
1GB Ram
8MP 1080p camera
1.3mp front facing camera
LTE Support also with HSPA+
I am really excited to get it, I played around with one at the cell shop here in canada.
I liked it's design over the Samsung Galaxy S II, not sure if I made a mistake ordering this phone though.
Anyone have this or are getting it?
I have no idea how to overclock and/or root (or even what I could do with a rooted phone for that matter lol)

He just answered your concern "not being sure if you made the right decision" between this and SGS2. Most of the stuff posted under Vivid forums about HTC Vivid is ok, that means no problems with the device, therefore you made a good choise. There are many threads opened on this regard, so there's enough opinion for you to read. I've played with both SGS2 and Vivid, and the Vivid was the winner for me even over the Skyrocket.
Sent from my HTC Vivid via Tapatalk
You haven't made a mistake in ordering it. I had a Captivate and, for a day, the Skyrocket before moving on to the Vivid. A piece of paper is built better than the Skyrocket, or just about any plastic-laden Samsung for that matter. You will not be disappointed. Coming from an iPhone 4, you won't see that much of an improvement going from a Retina screen to the 4.5" qHD one on the Holiday (Vivid/Raider), but the resolution is there and it's very pleasing.
Eventually, true root will be coming to this device. Just for reference, the processor is actually 1.5 GHz but is underclocked to 1.2 for better battery life.
Amazing. Now all I can do is wait for it to be shipped to me.
I've heard good things about it, and some not so good things.
I did (while playing at a bell store) prefer its design over the SGS2.
It was so cool and I hope to eventually root and clock it back to 1.5 ghz.
This will be my first android, and from what it seems, spec wise it blows the iPhone 4 out of the water

Nexus or Note?

I chose the Note because it has better hardware than than the Nexus. Just look at the CPU, GPU, and screen. For me the Note is a perfect phone because I use it mainly for web browsing, gaming, and watching live video. The advantage the Nexus has is ICS, which we will eventually get.

note has a notable edge on screen res. on top of having extra 80 lines (1280x800 vs 1280x720), the nexus also loses lines of resolution due to its on screen buttons, which reduces the resolution of the nexus to something like 1196x720.
note also has more processing power. i had a motorola atrix and upgraded to a galaxy note. despite the note having to run at a much higher resolution, it was still producing a much higher framerate compared to the atrix. the omap isnt that quick compared to the exynos chipset.
but im just going on technicalities here. i havent tried the nexus yet, but if the nexus was available 2 weeks earlier, i probably would have a nexus instead of a note. in the end, both are awesome phones, and both will get ICS (although the note might not see it till january). its just a matter of whether or not you can wait.
I think Note is the best one ,
Best resolution
Best Screen Size (not comfortable for all)
Best CPU
Best GPU
My choice is the Note, as mentioned above the PowerVR graphics in the Galaxy Nexus is quite a bit slower than the Mali-400 in the Note/S2 despite the higher resolution. Also the Note gets a bigger battery while the Galaxy Nexus is much the same as the S2.
A big deal breaker on the Galaxy Nexus for me is the lack of micro SD expansion, with such a fantastic screen for video and prices relatively low for 32GB cards the microSD slot is pretty handy.
John
Note +
Hardware
Screen Size & Resolution
Expandable Memory
Nexus +
ICS
Overall Size
Design
The lack of sd card in the Nexus and weaker hardware meant I went for the Note and I don't regret it. ICS on the Note should be awesome because there is definitely room for improvement in the software department for the Note, it isn't as smooth as my S2 was when scrolling though menus.
imho: Nexus = Absolutely NOGO !
Agree Johnmcl7:

In my case, I use a huge amount( up to 30 GB and more )of offline RasterMaps for Navigation in regions not covered by Navtech/Teleatlas Vmaps , for this reason expandable storage is essential .
Ostentible SGN supports 64GB SDHC ...
If the Nexus would have a SDSlot , I would have spoilt for choice
When updated to ISC the SGN will have only advantages !
I thought I had misread it when I saw the Galaxy Nexus was lacking a micro SD slot but unfortunately it's true.
How do the cameras compare? I know the Galaxy Nexus is 3MP down but that on its own doesn't mean anything.
John

and thats why i bought a galaxy note
Dont go into Note section to ask for question like this, because most of the answers will be pretty obvious. And you dont mind if I add 1 more. Note has the best specs, but if you cant wait for ICS, go for Nexus, it's the only thing that brings the Note down.
Note without a doubt. I was interested in the Nexus back when I had an SGS2 but as soon as I learned of the Note (bigger screen, same GPU as SGS2, faster CPU and expandable microSD) I knew it was the one for me and not Nexus. Nexus has too many compromises to be worth it for anyone but a developer.
Of course note.
The note has everything the nexus has and a larger screen in addition.
16gb just doesn't cut it. And now I am used to the size of the note I'm not sure I could ever go back. Its pushing my ipad aside too.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA App
I like the larger screen for emailing and surfing.
I dislike those soft buttons on the Nexus, they don't look appealing to me and I like having hard buttons.
So it was a no-brainer.

[Q] Good time to buy a new phone?

I hate to make another good bye thread, but I think its time for me to upgrade. Our dev community is all but dead (besides for the CM10 JB Rom), and I think I just need a new phone.
Is it a good time to get a new phone? Im looking for a top of the line high end phone on AT&T. I was looking at the One X+ but the Tegra 3 chip seems like its a little old. Im also not a big fan of the LG Optimus. Im really liking the Droid DNA but the fact that there is 16gb non expendable storage and the off contract price is $600 (it comes unlocked so it works on AT&T) is kind of a deal breaker.
Should I Wait for CES and hope that more Snapdragon 4 Pro, 1080p phones will come? Or should I just get the One X+?
I would just buy a Nexus 4. I just did. It isn't here yet, but it is going to be aweeesome.
As soon as Google gets more, I'm buying a nexus 4 also! I'm still going to keep this phone as a backup/tethering device (I need LTE speeds to tether).

I guess I can overlook those things because I hate the bull **** of skins like sense and touch wiz. Also too, I can't stand the service providers bastardizing the software with their bloat.
But to better answer your question, CES always has new stuff rolling out, but it's really up to what you want. This ain't like the iPhone where there's only one phone a year to look forward to. There's always a new phone coming out with Android on it. Look at how fast the one X+ came out after the one X.... If there's not a phone right now that makes you want to run out and buy it, wait till that one comes around... Or until your current phone breaks!

I ain't going to lie, I would rather have a phone with more storage or an sd, a removable battery, and lte, but I just don't trust carrier phones anymore so I bought a nexus 4 and I am patiently waiting for it to get here, but figured the sacrifices would be worth it to not have to deal with the hurdles modern phones have just to delete unwanted bloatware, and have wifi tethering with no bs monthly charge.
I really love the one X plus, but I am a bit afraid of it. Afraid it's this year's vivid, a filler phone with locked down hardware and piss poor support. Honestly with my impatience over the nexus 4, I played with all the carrier phones and the answer is a no brainer. Galaxy s3!
Galaxy S3 is as close to a no compromise phone as it gets. Sure its only been dual core, but it's a bad ass dual core, and it's got 2 gigs of ram, and it just got its jelly bean update, and development is off the chain, hell its practically the flagship for the cm team! Accessories are on the level of apple products.. In fact by all means it's the anti iphone.
It looks good, and if you can't deal with TouchWiz, you have most likely an overwhelming amount of options.
Only downsides to it is if your a screen perfectionist you'll probably hate the pentile 4.8 inch 720p AMOLED screen. I personally think it's gorgeous and I can't even tell the difference between pentile and non pentile anyway and I prefer amoled anyway for better brightness, deeper blacks, and better battery life.
My other gripe with it is the dated button layout. I do like physical buttons over the nexuses virtual buttons as the virtual buttons sacrifice screen real estate, but I prefer the new layout as menu is just useless after ics.

Good time to buy a new phone?
I know you posted this awhile ago, but, if you were to get a new phone this week, you'd literally be getting a new phone the week the main CM10 ROM issue for Holiday (AT&T in-call microphone) is solved.
So, no, if you're thinking of getting a new phone this week, I'd wait. We're going to have a ton of roms pouring in over the next few weeks.
Want to kill the lag? Put wcx's stock rom on, and leave it be! Seriously, any mods will just add lag, deal with sense 3.6 and put that rom on and you'll be happier. Trust me it's worked for me

HTC on X + , i say ! Go for it
I would take galaxy S3
They are equal in terms of hardware (well... similar) but other than touchwiz being ugly for some people, it's packing some realy helpful features:
-smart stay, smartphone, smart omfgwtfbbq.
-compatibility with various controlers (usb otg)
-better battery life + removable battery (and you can buy an extension with a case)
-MOAR STORAGE<- sd card up to 64gb
but i own an Ace,,, why do you even ask here? ;P
Go with the S3! Would be a way better choice! Cause of the extra storage!
SGS III i think...
HTC Ui is always difficult to work with...
Even when you're using custom roms

Sent from my GT-S5830
If you prefer the design of the phone, choose HTC One X. But if you want better perfomance, go with Samsung Galaxy SIII
what are you talking about here?
i am in the same situation now. to chose from s3 and one x plus.
BUT
performance: s3 has quad core 1,4ghz, htc has quad core tegra 3 1m7ghz. here htc is faster.
both have same amount of ram.
both have the same 2100 battery but htc has a better battery life score on gsmarena.
are you guys sure you know what you are comparing here or are you comparing s3 with htc one x (non plus)
i am to decide these days so please reply.
s3
I think you should bye S3, It's very well supported by developers and Samsung Mobile.
give me more reasons to buy s3 tomorrow iwill place the order, and i am still not sure what to buy.
Samsung over htc:
better community support,
card slot ?!?!?! only 16gb stock(cheapest version)
maybe better app support (can anyone confirm this?)
htc over samsung
design, build quality,
extra headphones(urbeats by dre - i am using my 5 years old sennheiser cx-300)
64gb storage
smaller in size (a few mm do matter when you want to wrap it around a small arm like mine)
better hardware (1,7ghz vs 1,4ghz) but the same amount of ram
for me, they cost the same.
I would go for the s3. I think that touchwiz is not the best looking skin, but sense realy sux. Not to mention s3 got the note 2 suite with some cool features. Go for the s3!
Sent from my GT-S5830 using xda app-developers app
The one x+ had better build quality and better headphones for sure, but that is pretty much the only fields in which it beats the S3. You were talking about 64 GB of storage on the one x+, but the s3 has 32 GB internal AND an SD card slot.
So, using multiple cards, you potentially have unlimited storage!
The S3 has a faster processor, has same ram and is about to get updated to jellybean in about 2-3 months maximum.
Plus touchwiz isn't as bad as sense.
Also, S3 has a huge developing community. So you have new ROMs coming ever week! And kernels, themes and other great stuff.
Seriously, go for the S3. It's the only 'sense'ible choice.
now i bought the s3.
there could not be any crappier headphones than the ones included, so i must buy myself also a pair of headphones.
i hope it will raise to the votes received here.
Well.. I got the s3, UI pretty Damon awesome and gaming is awesome benchmark score of 5012

S3 has a Exynos 4412 Quad chipset. Now, Exynos usually has amazing performance but most developers doesn't like to develop for it because of various reasons
HTC ONE X+ has a NVIDIA Tegra 3 AP37 chipset ...Now, I am not a big fan of Tegra 3..Just because it has a higher clock speed doesn't mean that it is the fastest phone out there
In fact, the best processor in the market right now is the Snapdragon S4 Pro..It simply is the best right now.It is also the processor that comes with the N4
S3 vs One X+:
Both will stand toe to toe against each other, but I think S3 has a small advantage over here with its plethora of innovative features such as Smart Stay and Direct Call.
This is just my opinion anyway

S3.
1. It's samsung. Easily rooted and a lot of development for it.
2. Removable battery + SD card. (Even if you don't use either, they can be pretty handy.)
3. It's an S3. Come on dude. Why do you even ask?

Yes, good idea like what I want to say
I must say I am not that impressed by this. Coming from i9000 cm9.1 I was expecting a lot more. Stock 4.1.1 is very laggy when unlocking. Each action must be done a few times to become fluent. I am very disappointed in the software development from Samsung.
I just installed cm10.1 to get a little more accurate responsiveness.
I really thought quad core was going to make a big difference but... Meh...
