Hey guys. So i have tried Adam Outlers Heimdall one click package but it always fails when uploading kernel!
I tried to Odin my way back to a 2.1 stock rom but that caused bootloops. So I guess my only choice is the Adams package, cause I cant find any Odin one click for I897UCKB2 version 2.2 froyo. Any help would be appreciated.
been a long time since i had to deal with sammy crap :/
Nvm i was trying to do it with the rooted one, the nonrooted package worked. Sammy oh sammy.

I'm thinking about installing a custom ROM but a bit confused in the ODIN part. I'm fairly new to the android community having just got my Rogers I896 in October.
With Odin, I realized there's the Odin one click downloader which seems to be the easiest one. I do notice that comes prepackaged with the I897 stock ROM.
The other alternative is to use a Non-one click Odin and the Stock I896 Froyo rom but not really sure how to go from there. I think I need a PIT file or something after watching some youtube videos? There seems to be a few PIT files to use. I'm not sure which one to use and where can i find them.
Because I'm on Rogers and I have also updated to the official Froyo via Kies, does it really matter which odin and which stock ROM to install prior to flashing a custom rom?
Would like some guidance here. I've been searching, googling and researching about this custom ROM thing for days already and can't seem to gather enough information for me to confidently perform this.
Thanks in advance
I think they are all great questions and I am in the same boat so I will tack on a question of my own here.
If you flash a bad rom, can you use ODIN to get back to stock? Even if you have no backup?
I recently just flashed a new rom and I had realized I never tried the stock 2.2 from samsung and I was wondering what people thought of it and if they were still able to flash other roms or use odin to go back to stock 2.1 and then flash other roms again. Or does updating to 2.2 mess up some of that?
And is it even worth it to try and check it out?
I am running serendipity and my wife has stock. I would not go back to stock if att were to pay me. Her Gps was messed up, bad battery life and other strange issues.

the only thing 2.2 may mess up for flashing roms is it installs 3e recovery which needs signed update.zip packages (can be patched ) , and sometimes you need a new root program.
besides that its... stock. with the 2.2 updates...
Has anyone tried reflashing odin or using clockwork/rooting in 2.2?
I'm thinking i'm going to stay away from it at this point but curiosity my get the best of me....

i sucessfully rooted it using superone click method...but had problem flashing clockwork mode as there is sign verification problem...so i tried to flash back to 2.1 and used AIO method...which bricked my phone...so better to keep flashing good custom roms and be unbricked ....stay away from stock froyo...its exactly 2.1 with stock froyo capabilities...

First I have a Captivate 1007.
Very easy to get into Download Mode so I know the phone isn't bricked.
I was running a version of Serendipity Rom. I wanted to try something different.
So I used what I always use the ODin3 One-Click Stock back to Eclair.
I get nothing but a boot cycle showing the AT&T screen.
Must I go to Stock Froyo now?
Would appreciate some guidance as I'm stuck after a few hours of searching!
Have you tried to flash odin again
CM7

have read someone something the same what only works with him is flashing the leaked froyo. you may flash back to stock eclair after everything is working.
The leaked Froyo from Eugene?
I have that one I was just hesitant to flash it.
There is no .PIT file with it though. Is that ok?
EDIT:
Just tried with Odin3 1.7 got Eugene_JK2_Froyo.tar (2).md5 is invalid.
Going to try this one I897UCJI6-OCD-REV02-Low-designgears.exe

I have 1007 build, I would have to agree with ^^this^^.
Something might of happened in the flash. Try it again.
Use these specifically.
2.1 - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=SBSMALFJ
2.2 - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=QL6NX702
Working now after flashing with I897UCJI6-OCD-REV02-Low-designgears_1_.exe
What do you guys recommend flashing now back to original Eclair stock or staying?
Really up to you at this point. I don't bother with stock (original) firmware as they are bloated and whatnot.
Indeed. Going to try something with good battery life now!
Thank you for all the help fellas!
EDIT: Also I can't go back to 2.1 Stock. Only 2.2 Stock!
I have flashed my phone in the past, but now I read something about some people not being able to go back to JF6. I plan on installing Apex, and i dont want to mess this phone up.
If i do try with one click flash back to jf6, am i risking bricking my phone? (I have a jig btw, but i know these phones can actually hard brick to where the jig wont help)

Newer Captivate do not like to go back to JF6. Try this link it will allow you to flash froyo instead.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1191094
tried that method, ended up not completely wiping my phone for some reason, and the second i turn the phone i got fc's to the point where the phone was unusable.
I used one click odin to get to jf6 and it seemed to work.
When you say these phones dont like it, does that mean that a flash back to jf6 using this method that seemingly went well might actually be messed up?
Try this out

Whats better to flash back to UCKB2 or jf6?
And whats the difference between those programs. Im most comfortable with odin one click, but is there something wrong with using that? Could that be causing my problems?
Phones that came with Froyo usually bootloop when flashing eclair. Both heimdall packages provided should work. There is a KB1 package for ODIN somewhere as well.

is there any advantage to flashing kb1 over jf6? I mean, flashing to jf6 seems to work everytime....
If it's worked before it'll continue to work... If your phone was going to bootloop from jf6 it would have done it already.

Have you tried downloading the jf6 firmware from Samfirmware? Its a full Odin version, but I don't think it has bootloaders (which is perfect for flashing stock before a ROM).
I was just wondering I just recently bricked my last Captivate luckily At&t replaced it for free but im not sure how many more times thats going to work. My idea was that the brick occured from a suspicious looking 2.3 odin file but im not sure if that bricked it. Should I try flashing with the same computer but with a diferent 2.3 odin? I got a new one heres the link.

Edit: forgot original package that bricked my phone.

A hard brick occurs when you flash incompatible bootloaders. Make sure you flash the gingerbread bootloaders first (either the i9000 bootloaders or 2.3 captivate bootloaders) with odin then flash your gingerbread rom. There are odin packages that include just the bootloaders. Hope that helps.

Yeah it kinda helps im gonna wait though and buy a usb jig just so im ready if anything does manage to go wrong. Thanks though i didnt know that.
See with the package i used that bricked my phone it got stuck in a certain stage and wouldnt go anywhere so i tryed unpluging it and try to go back to 2.1 but after that attempted 2.3 flash it wouldnt accept any odins.
A hard brick not only happens with incompatible bootloaders, but with an incomplete bootloader flash, which is what happened, you say it stopped at a certain point, that is more than likely where it bricked. That package isn't "suspicious", if it were there would be a lot of reports about it.
The first link you posted is bootloaders only. It will not flash 2.3 firmware at all. Just the boots.
To make sure odin doesn't stall out, use a port on the back of the pc, right click odin and run as admin.
What studacris said. Keep in mind there is always a small risk on flashing that Odin fails. So once you flash Gingerbread bootloaders just don't flash any bootloaders again unless you really need to. OR Look in to the Unbrickable mod if you want that.
Just askin how long would ikt take to flash just the gb bootloaders?
Less than a second. Its a very small risk to begging with BUT a risk none the less.
ANother question is there any danger in downgrading bootloaders?
Same as upgrading. No reason to Downgrade except maybe AOSP specific kernels or warranty.
I had to right now because of a bootloop and a failed custom rom install and none of my backups worked and i couldnt install anything else. It said on clockworkmod that it couldnt read my cache folders. Did i have to go back to 2.1? Because thats what i did. Also thank you guys for answering my questions the captivate is so much more complex that the droid when it comes to custom roms and stuff like that.

No there are Odin packages that Do not include bootloaders, just saying. Same as there is GB packages without bootloaders as well (this goes for KF1 and KH3 to my knowledge). Once you flash GB bootloaders there is no reason to reflash bootloaders except for AOSP specific kernels and Warranty.
