does one exist that works for this phone? Everyone i try from the market takes me to a radio info page and it has a drop down and it automatically goes to GSM/lte auto mode regardless! Argh man i hate lte the speed is useless because of data caps and battery life is terrible!

I think most people now create a second APN that avoids the LTE radio/network. They have to manually switch between the default and the custom APN. There are a few threads in the General section on how to do this. Of course, you want a toggle to do the switching for you. But you will need that second APN if I am not mistaken.
This may not meet your needs, but I use 2X Battery. It's main function is to turn off the data radio(s) when the phone is in the sleep mode. You can configure it to stay off for a short period of time when after coming out of sleep mode. You still receive calls, text messages, and maybe mail. I'm not sure about the last. With the paid version (2.99), you can have it go into airplane mode for a specified time range at night. If you have a need to check mail, Facebook, etc. while in sleep mode, this won't work for you.
But with 2X Battery, I am getting 24-36 hours from the standard battery, I suspect a heavy user might get 18+ hours if they can aford to have the radio off while the phone is asleep.
I noticed before that the battery drain on LTE was extreme when I had about one or two bars (weak signal). The extended battery solved this, and luckily I still have unlimited data.

It would be awesome if someone could post their APN settings. I don't even have 3G in my area (lol Appalachian Mountains) it would be great to save battery.

There are tons of them in the General section. First, look in the General Information thread pinned at the top. Then, do a search for "APN settings." This will get you a number of articles where people have posted settings. You should read the comments as well to understand what the settings do. Note that you cannot edit the default PTA APN (AT&T). You have to add a new APN and then switch to it to go from AT&T's HSPA+/4G/LTE down to 3G or Edge
I searched the main forum and cannot find what I"m looking for. I did a google search and found someone with an Nitro HD on androidforums who posted some APN settings and I tried them and no luck, LTE signal doesn't go away, and a speed test shows ridiculous 40meg downloads on both apns.
EDIT: I just sent an e-mail to HTC developers about this. Seriously they need to patch it. How in the hell do they not have a switch to turn it off? I remember my captivate had a setting to use 2G networks only, we don't even have that it seems! Didn't the EVO have one to turn off WiMax?

As for as a toggle, the only thing I found on Play/Market were a few apps that appeared to be phone specific. No guarantee that they will work on the Vivid or will work with ICS. One Vivid user said he used LTE OnOff:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1480696&highlight=apn+settings&page=2
Here are some links to threads that contain APN settings. The first has AT&T and Rogers.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1338109&highlight=apn+settings
This thread came from someone who had an HTC Atrix on AT&T:

This may or may not help:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1593506&highlight=apn+settings
As I said earlier, the general suggestion I found was to create a second APN using one of the ones from the links above. The impression I got was that some of the folks were trying to get tethering to work.
Sorry I can't help you more.
I think we're sol pretty much. But I'll continue to look into the apn idea in the meantime

I need a little help. I'm making the jump from unlocked iphones to the Nexus One and have a newly acquired nexus one that has already been rooted and set with the 2.2 Froyo rom, and what I am told is the most popular Cyanogen HTC rom. The 2.2 Froyo rom seems to work perfectly, but my preference is the HTC ROM listed under my back up as BOS-20100531-0408. When I am running this ROM, I am unable to connect to 3G, or edge for that matter. (wifi connects fine) I have attempted the simple steps of dialing *#*#4636#*#* and changing the setting from WCDMA preferred to WCDMA Only, but this has had no effect. I lose signal for a second, then my bars come back, but no 3G and no edge. I am certain this is a T-Mobile model Nexus and I have the appropriate internet package as well. If anyone can help, I would appreciate it. Thank you.
update: The 3G works fine under Froyo, just not the HTC incase that wasn't clear. Thank you.
You need to enter your APN settings on the HTC ROM.
Okay, I have gone into settings, wireless & networks, mobile networks, Access Point Names, and the screen is an empty black. How do I add an APN? Is this the appropriate location? Thank you for your help.
3G issues
Okay, so I went into the APN blank screen, selected the menu on the phone and added the APN info I found on a website after a quick google search. I was going to post the link here, but I am apparently restricted from doing so because I am new. Now I have an H with arrows under it next to my service bars. Is this the same as 3G? I am unfamiliar with the H with arrows under it, but it seems pretty quick. I believe there is another page on xda that states it is as good, or better than 3G, is this correct? Thanks again.
Doesn't seem to be a way to turn LTE off to conserve battery. I mean, you can turn off Mobile Data all together but that seems to be the only option.
On previous phones I have always tried to go through the day with the slowest data possible to conserve battery, then when I am surfing on need the faster data, I just turn it on.
At least in the Canadian version we have the option to not pick LTE. In settings->Wireless & Networks -> mobile networks -> Network mode
These instructions for the Thunderbolt work. It's a bit much to go through every time you want to switch, though.
http://forums.androidcentral.com/verizon-htc-thunderbolt-forums/70282-how-turn-off-lte.html
*Edit*
Nevermind. It appears that you cannot change the default Preferred Network Type on this phone with that method.

Unfortunately the AT&T Phone does not have the Network Mode selection although I would guess once we get these phones rooted and what not we will probably see Rom's for AT&T That have that option included.
This would have been nice to do for those of us without LTE at the moment.
Also in the same boat wanting to turn off LTE and go to HSPA+ or even just Edge while I am in the office not using the device for anything other than text. Phone taken off charger at 8am and is now in the yellow range.
Can someone with a rogers version do the temp root, and then pull their settings apk for us? Would that do it if we install?

I'm going to the try logging in as well and will try the switch when i get the phone. Post up if you've had luck with either of them and if you've seen an increase in battery life.

Changing the APN will drop you off LTE. yay finally found a way!You can even then use the *#*#4636#*#* phone pref method to turn it to WCDMA and have it still. I hjope that means it turns off the LTE radio entirely. Will see with battery life.
Thanks... hopefully this helps battery life a bit.
That is my ONLY complaint about this phone so far... well that and the locked bootloader.
Yep, another noob with a busted phone. Verizon Droid 3, about 5 months old.
I've just noticed that I have no 3G. Not a 3G problem, I've confirmed with another phone that I'm in a covered area. Normally I'm under one Wi-Fi net or another, so I rarely use it. Noticed it yesterday when I needed it.
Allowed the 2.3.4 upgrade back in May. No problems, just had to reroot the phone. Pretty sure this started after the upgrade, but not 100% sure.
I've tried Googling, saw the *228, tried it, nothing. Found threads about task killers causing issues, uninstalled Advanced Task Killer, nothing. Pulled the battery and rebooted, nothing. Saw some thread on APN settings, but those are not available to me with Netwrok Mode set to Global. I can set it to CDMA, still has APN setting greyed out.
Not finding anything else much to go on, could use some help.
One thing you could try is hitting *#*#4636#*#* then Phone Information and changing the network to EVDO only. That would force it to connect to 3g. Then if that doesn't work try manually forcing a PRL using ##Program. You could always call Verizon.

Are you on any rom? Stock?
If your on stock, I would go to verizon and ask for a replacement or see if they can give you a replacement or fix it.
If your rooted/custom rom I would try re-downloading whatever rom your using and reflash it. And wipe caches.
I've actually had a few issues with the 3G on my own D3. These steps generally work for me.
Navigate to your APN settings. Settings>Wireless & Networks>Mobile Networks
Press Menu (An option should pop up that says "Reset APN" or "Reset Values")
Press this and wait a few seconds.
Reboot, and you SHOULD be up and running.
If this doesn't work you can edit the greyed out APNs manually (NOT advised) with a trick I can show you. Hope I was able to help!
-End All Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt
I don't think you can even access the apn menu from cdma mode.
Sent from my xt862 using xda app-developers app
Thanks for the suggestions so far. Unfortunately, none of them have worked. EndAllFUD, even switching over to GSM so I can get to the AFN settings, there is no reset that I could find.
I've went back and tried unfreezing all the oddball authenticators under the assumption that maybe one of then was IDing me to the 3G network. That hasn't worked either. Unless I come up with another idea, I guess I'm going to have to try Verizon and see if they can/will help.
Well, we have a resolution. After everything up to and including a factory reset, it seems that the 3G radio in my Droid has died. Verizon is sending me another; I'm springing for the overnight shipping.
I had forgotten how much effort had went into customizing this thing. The stock phone is just...painful.
I appreciate all the help that was offered.
Sorry to hear about the 3g radio in your D3, but glad to hear you resolved your issue! Also, I was going to amend my solution. I was basing my answer of memory due to the fact that I am currently running Hashcode's CM9. (It's amazing by the way) The proper instructions were as follows: (Amended instructions are in bold.)
Navigate to your APN settings. Settings>Wireless & Networks>Mobile Networks
Set network mode to GSM
Change mode back to Global but quickly start tapping the "Access Point Names" menu until it lets you in.
-(You are now in the locked Global Settings Menu)
Press Menu (An option should pop up that says "Reset to default")
Press this and wait a few seconds.
Reboot, and you SHOULD be up and running.

Yeah I just had to throw in a trick I figured out one day when I was screwing around with my phone. My apologies for not remembering to put it in earlier.
Does anyone know how to tweak Droid 3 to make it able to call, message and 3G, but not 1x data?
It isn't possible to make calls or texts using CDMA service locked into EVDO only. If you use Google Voice and a SIP program it would work.

GPS works perfectly fine. It is the cell tower location that doesn't work!
Go into your settings and disable GPS and Wifi and try going to Maps and you shouldn't get a location.
This has been discussed greatly in the LTE thread.
- *#*#INFO#*#* Phone Settings shows an Unknown under location and no neighbouring CID
- Since there is no location, Google Now fails to load properly
- HSPA establishes all locations as it should. Check *#*#INFO#*#* again

What is the real problem for Google Now? cant it get the location from GPS directly?
That's that I think. If you open Maps with GPS on, then get a lock in. The location will save into your cache or whatever. So if you open Google Now right after it will grab your location.

Happened once for me. I am on CM10.1, i have a button on my notification for enabling LTE, remainder of the time i stay on HSPA
I'm on Fido with rooted stock rom and haven't encountered any issues, then again, I haven't really done any extensive testing, I'll keep an eye on the GPS lock over the next few days and see if I get anything out of the ordinary.
so no one else is having issues with the gps when they are on LTE?
i'm on rogers in toronto... when i set preferred network to any of the LTE network settings my gps fails, gps works fine when its set to the default WCDMA preferred.
google now and any apps using gps locations fail for me on the LTE network... anyone have an idea on how to fix this?
I added these lines to build.prop in the flashable zip file's build.prop's end:
Code:
telephony.lteOnGsmDevice=1
ro.telephony.default_network=9
ro.ril.def.preferred.network=9
Factory reset the phone, and then flash the zip and gapps. in the Settings -> System -> Notification drawer -> Widget buttons
you can find LTE button there.
Once LTE is toggled, it hops on to LTE after a delay, it stays on HSPA+ first for about good 15-30 seconds before it shows full 4G and LTE in the settings.
Google Now works most of the time like this, but if you stay on LTE for too long, the location cache gets reset, Google Now wont get location until you go back to HSPA+

Well I just exchanged my black and went back to silver and still the same issue. I am starting to think the guy that set up my phone on my account jacked something up. I have been all through the service provisioning matching it to my friend that has one....and only found one difference. Seems my phone is only picking up CDMA-EVDO Rev-a instead of CDMA - eHRPD. When I change the prefered network from LTE/CDMA it will try to connect to eHRPD but then switches back to EVDO and no 4G. So I will try to call sprint and have them inspect my account as I have not seen a way in the service programming to force eHRPD. It would be nice to have the others that are having this issue check the Mobile network type as well and see what they are running.
Try not touching the phone and see that it holds 4G until you touch it...I know its pretty useless to not be able to touch your phone but this has been my experience.
In my experience, not touching the phone does not seem to fix the problem. I do notice a small signal loss if I have the left side of the phone against the palm of my hand. The real issue here seems to be related to the phone having some sort of broken threshold from when to switch to 3g to 4g and how much better the 3g signal has to be in order to decide to switch off of 4g to 3g.
I noticed that the LTE Scan Time is set way higher than what the EVO LTE is set to with latest firmware (300 on the HTC One vs 5 on the EVO LTE). I have not had much time to test changing this to see if it makes a real difference or not though. You can check what your LTE scan time is set to in ##3282#. You will need to get your MSL to change it if you want to do that (there is a method to get your MSL without rooting here on XDA).
Another thing you can try to see if it is indeed a reception problem or a problem with the phone not switching between 3G and 4G smartly is to set the phone to LTE / CDMA(1xRTT) only. You can do this in *#*#4636#*#* under the phone information submenu. Tap where it says "CDMA + LTE/EvDo auto" and change it to "LTE, CDMA" or even "LTE only".

In my experience, not touching the phone does not seem to fix the problem. I do notice a small signal loss if I have the left side of the phone against the palm of my hand. Issue resolved for me! After 6 phone exchanges I was able to uncover what was causing the phone to not get on eHRPD which is Sprints upgraded software on the towers. I called sprint support and made them verify my UICC ID under about/phone identity, this also is the same as number as the SIM id. They did not match what was on my account. I went back to Best Buy and they called activation's and they sent a profile update with the correct SIM and UICC ID and it solved the issue. No more 104 data issues and I can get 4G now. WOO HOO!
I do want to say that Sprint really went to bat for me to get this resolved. I have to say thanks to the San Diego Sprint rep who kept in touch with me through out all of this.....Thank you man!!!

I had the exact same problem. My phone will not connect to 4G LTE. I have a few questions. How do I know the UICC ID, SIM? Where do I find them under my account?
Thanks a lot

You have to call sprint customer care to have them verify what you have on your phone. I recommend calling from some other phone when you call though. Just explain that you are having issues with your data and you heard that sometimes the UUIC ID/SIM ID are incorrect. They might come back and tell you, "well thats for international only" but in fact the SIM ID is used for LTE from what I found out. Just insist (nicely) that you just want to try it.
On the phone you can see your SIM ID under settings/about/Phone Identity.
One way to see if this fixes the issue is look under settings/about/Network and look under Mobil Network Type. If it is always running in EvDo rev A. then you have the issue if the towers in your area have Network Vision updated towers.
Hope this helps...PM me if you want more information. I can also get you tower data in your area if you would like.
slayer69, Thank you so much for your quick response. My phone runs with EHRPD when it showed 3G, not rev. A. However, my phone had the same issue, not connecting to 4G/LTE. From time to time, it will show 4G signal on the bar. However, when I tried to use it, it will switch back to 3G. I will call sprint to verify if tI have the sim card issue.

I talked with Sprint. It seemed that my SIM/UICC code is matched with the system. So my problem is still not resolved. I used an app to check the signal information, which showed that I have -70dB LTE signal. However, I just can't connect to LTE.
It seems that it is not only me. Check this link

Thanks to all in this thread. I had the same problem while in Oakland. My wife has an S2 on sprint and she had a strong 4g connection and mine was stuck on 3g. Now if this is a hardware issue that this phone has what if anything can we do. Can we exchange for a different device
