Yes, using software you can decode full HD. But it will be very slow, unwatchable.

no i dont have this phone but i want to buy, so i want to see if it supports hw acceleration of 480p avc [email protected] cabac/4 ref frames like the sample i uploaded because most of my movies and shows are in this format
i know it is supported by sw decoding but sw drains battery quickly, so i wanna know the hw decoding capabilities of the phone, so please guys try the sample in hw decoding and tell me the result

Forgive me for offtop, but, if we will have codecs the video in youtube will works and we will have the working camcorder? And what about zoom?
ohh...wtf!
WE DO NOT HAVE OPTICAL ZOOM!!!!
we just have digital, and the "zoom" effect is only made by reducing px/quality.
(btw: why no ics? cuz 4.2 is already around the corner maybe?)

I think ICS/JB have same codec architecture
Instead of porting the codecs from msm7x30 we could try to replace them with a ffmpeg based codec. I'm not much of a programmer, but take a look at these:

What about MX Player? Videos work just fine with it using software decoder on ICS/JB. You can even even watch YouTube videos.
http://limoa.sourceforge.net/node
im no android dev, but decoding and encoding arent the same thing.
(bad) example: to build a house need months. afterwards looking how it looks need some minutes.
you have to compress the raw data from "cam" into a (more or less) little file.
currently im compressing 72,5GB of raw video data. using x264 and a phenom 2 x3 i need around 45min. BUT: the vid is opend in seconds and lasts around 15 min.
i hope i could explain it.
Guys, relax software cant replace hardware decoding, understand that we want hardware decoding to work, if it works cam too will work, ics and jb have same, if we get it done on ics, it will work on jb too.
A little more info on hardware decoding, but this is just for knowledge ( but few technical aspects are there )

I'm not too familiar with the Pi. But always considering options for a new HTPC / media center.
What's the general consensus on this nifty little thing regarding it's ability to handle HD material? Most of my collection is 720p due to having a 720 television. Can it handle an average bitrate of about 4,000-4,500kbps with peaks topping out at about 12,000-13,000kbps max (with very rare peaks hitting 20,000kbps)?
Thanks
Aaron
My pi running xbian handles 720p no problem for the most part, although it may occasionally buffer during really busy scenes. The biggest problem I had was that it couldn't handle DTS audio. Caused buffering every few seconds. I don't have any 1080p films as my TV is only 720p

Thanks Endoroid. DTS isn't an issue, as my sound system is still of the Dolby era and all of my, backups (cough cough) I encode, I encode with Pro-Logic. I use my sound system for 99% music. And while my front speakers are abso-freakin-lutely amazing (Infinity IL40 towers), I can't bring myself to get upgrade my 25 year old Kenwood receiver which was top of the line during it's time (kr-v126r). It just sounds, and works, that good still.

I think I heard a couple weeks ago that the Pi is going to get an update and will handle HD material much better. I don't remember specifics though. Anybody heard this?
I'm currently using the raspberrypi as a mediacenter using xbian and it works flawless. I bought a cheap external hdd case (had an old hdd lying around) and hooked it to my pi.
Formatted as ext4 it can handle 9GiB 720P movies without any hassle. I've also tried a 25gb 1080p rip, but that was a little too much. (though it was still very watchable)
Samba transfer speeds are around 8-9mb/s so it will take a little longer to put your movies on the pi. Usenet/torrent speeds cap at around 3.5-4mb/s (on a 80mbit connection).
Same results on my PI. Can't actually play 1080p HD perfectly, but can do 720p just fine. Leveraging something like h264 I can watch 1080p perfectly.
Mine handles 1080p sources fine so long as they are less than about 6gb in size. More than that and I get a lot of buffering as I'm running over wifi. I haven't noted if it is related to audio encoding or not, but I'm sure that DTS will have a negative impact as well.
My projector is only 720p, so I don't consider this a big issue given the cost of the RPi.
I'm running OpenELEC. It occassionally freezes, but it handles the 1080p files slightly better than the JB ATV2, which also had crashing problems. The UI is more responsive on the RPi.

For me 1080p works perfectly with raspbmc when playing bigbuckbunny
1080p works well on my pi running raspbmc. However, it did have some issues with certain codecs, with some sound syncing issues. But all in all the thing is fantastic as a small media center.
Sent from my Amaze 4G using xda app-developers app
I've used my rPi to play both 720 and 1080 and find it can under the right circumstances do both very well. The issue I came across with 1080 was more the fact the file was on a different device streaming to it via Wifi and ended up buffering a lot.
Does anyone know if as part of the update process they will start DVD ISO support? Or if it already exists? Overall absolutely love it as a media box, but there are still a lot of issues with codec support.
I've run xbmc for years.......big tip for anyone use openelec for pi doesn't skip a beat at all. All media handled on wired lan not a single issue.....for the record that includes 1080 24p

The i stands for interlaced, and it's not really 1080 resolution; it's about more like 2 540p images overlayed. Basically 1080p is sharper and 1080i is a bootlegged 1080p.

My experience with FOCAL recording videos at 120 fps. With a resolution of 1080p is video is useless (extremely pixelated) like you said, but I got better results by reducing the resolution to 720p. The only problem is that the audio is not synchronized (sounds at the beginning of the video at normal speed).
However this is the only app that works recording videos to a fps greater than 30.

Use Pavtube Video Converter Ultimate for transcoding ac3 to aac and keep the MP4 for Note 4, no video quality would be lost.
Sorry guys, but it's a serious matter and I can't understand well, I want a tablet that will last a while and I feel that HEVC support is mandatory as I watch a lot of movies/series on tablet ( I know it has a damned 4:3 screen ratio )
The info around the web are misleading, on the thread here seems that hevc video are supported, elsewhere that the soc is capable but not exposed to the O.S.
Can I play hevc 1080p video?
The only viable alternative is the z4 tablet but it's a bit pricey, but more importantly doesn't have multi windows, only small apps that seems horrible. ( although bring the tablet in the shower is awesome! even 16:10 display is great).
Thank you for your answers !
P.S.: for a complete view now I'm using a N7 2013 that is slowly dying ... :crying:

Yes, I also downloaded 500kbps tractor and 2k bunny clip to test on my S2 8" and they both played fine except neither has sound. Are these clips with no audio stream? Or should there be sound with the video clips?
I also have a Nexus 7 2013 that I'm retiring. The battery life on it is dismal after 2 1/2 years of use. You cannot imagine how fast the Tab S2 is compared to the N7. lol. It's amazing fast!
As Giles says above, use Mx Player and check in the settings to allow x265 decoding. My Mx Player came with the setting turned OFF so make sure you check the box x265 to ensure it decodes x265 streams for you.

Tested with Tab S2 SM-T810 and Nubia Z9 Max.
Everything is OK. No lags, no freezes.
But your samples were without sound.

Thank you all guys!
Yes the videos are without sound, I forgot to tell you , mea culpa !
BTW until my tablet is "working" ( or it forces me a reboot more than once very day ) I'll keep it; I've set my eyes on the upcoming ( ? ) nvidia shield x1 tablet ...
But the galaxy tab s2 8.0" for now it's the best deal!
Galaxy Tab S2 Does not Support HEVC H.265 video
From Android Central forum, we can see that the built-in video player app in Galaxy Tab S2 has no official support for H.265/HEVC video, but you can just install some third-party H.265 video player app such as VLC, Divx Player, PotPlayer, etc.
