me a while, I tried all of the tutoials and guides for downgrading and one almost did it but I would lose adb every time. So here is a fully working method to go from the latest ruu 2.3.4 with radio 2.15.10 back to 2.1 with radio 2.10.00 and full root!!! Works perfectly.
Start off by following this guide... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768295&highlight=ota
When you get to the point after you run the ./rageagainstthecage-arm5.img command and it kicks you out of adb and you can't get back into adb that's ok, reboot your phone, normal reboot, not full power down, then run the ruu from here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829783&highlight=3.26.605.1
then run the newest unrevoked, and when it reboots the phone into hboot, you have to manually run the update. Then reboot, if the phone only boots to hboot/fastboot, unplug the usb cable, pull battery, power back up, and run the update again, reboot to full boot and you will be at 2.1-update1. Delete the PB31IMG.zip from your sdcard. Re-run unrevoked, and You are ROOTED!!! Man that was quite a run, enjoy your rooted(again) phones.
UPDATE: instead of running the latest unrevoked, as it didn't work out for me, I just popped the new CWM PB31IMG.zip on the sdcard, rebooted to hboot and installed. I just went from Android 2.3.4 RUU / radio 2.15.10 to fully rooted 2.1 update1. So I know it works. Happy Flashing all

Nope it was installed right, even in that guide there are a lot of people that have that problem, because it doesn't work on 2.3.4 with radio 2.15.10
OK how about this for a question ... do you think this method could be use to root an EVO that is s-on w/ 2.3.3? Using the appropriate files of course.

it should work with s-on, just make sure you run unrevoked-forever after to turn s-off again, assuming that's what you want
actually looks like this is my solution http://revolutionary.io/ ... just found it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865204 but sadly no DINC support
I'm a little confused. Isn't that a Froyo Rom.zip (November, 2010) you posted? But you somehow downgraded to 2.1? Did you start out with s-on then?

No I started with s-off, and ya, I went from 2.3.4 to 2.1. It is an ruu exe. You should be able to run any ruu you want to, as long as its a rootable version.

But you typically can't go backward with the RUU's due to the "main version is older" roadblock. However, s-off aside, if you were able to revert backward (to either 2.1 or 2.2), then those are rootable. I'm just having issues here because you were s-off to start with which means you could have just shortcutted straight to the part of flashing the CWM PB31IMG and been done with it. But the fact you went backward to a rootable OS seemingly without utilizing s-off to do so leads me to believe you did this for an experiment to benefit others?
Bottom line, if you were able to revert to an older OS, the accidental s-on crowd should be able to follow in those footsteps and root from a prior OS.
I couldn't flash cwm because I ran an official ruu that removed root and everything and upgraded me to 2.3.4 that couldn't be rooted yet. But yes this was kind of an experiment to see of I could downgrade to an older OS without utilizing s-off. I really do hope this will help others who did the dumb thing like I did and do an official update, or anyone looking to downgrade to an older official OS.
The problem most people have is that they unrooted to s-on and then upgraded. If you were s-off and then upgraded with the OTA files posted, then all that would happen is you lose root and you woukd have to reflash a custom recovery. It seems that most people's issue is that they weren't s-off to begin with before they upgraded.

Has anyone tried this on an S-ON, 2.3.4 Incredible? If not, I'm taking the plunge tonight and will post results.
One other user in the general forum isn't having luck as s-on but it shouldn't matter. The OP didn't use his s-off until the very end and was able to get back to 2.1 without using s-off to do so. That's the key here, getting back to a rootable OS so you CAN get root and s-off. I'm GUESSING the reason unrevoked failed at the end was because it was updated for Froyo. Perhaps if he'd have either went straight to 2.2 or upgraded from 2.1 to 2.2 and then tried unrevoked, it may have worked.
Just a thought...remember that slcd's on 2.1 = black screen. There's a lot of slcd's out there these days so 2.2 might be preferred if possible.

It probably won't work because this guy started s-off and did a bunch of extra steps when he lost root after updating. Since he was s-off to begin with, all he had to do was reflash a custom recovery and superuser. It probably wont hurt for you to try, but I'm just saying most people don't get the difference between being rooted and s-off.

I know he started s-off but he only used s-off after he had successfully downgraded his OS to Eclair the way I read it. So he was already on an android OS that is rootable by way of Unrevoked and instead of dicking with Unrevoked any longer b/c it was failing on 2.1, he just decided to load CWM by utilizing Unrevoked instead. I think if he'd have been on 2.2, it may have worked.
If he did utilize s-off somewhere in between, I'm not seeing where it would have been?

2.3.4 is rootable if you have s-off. The only reason all of this worked for him is because he was s-off from the beginning allowing him to downgrade all the way down to 2.1. If he were s-on from the very beginning he couldn't have downgraded, thus everything else wouldn't have worked. Like I said in my last post, since he was s-off when he upgraded to 2.3.4, all he had to do was flash a custom recovery and superuser to regain root instead of going through that whole process. He was pretty vague in his posts though.

Absolutely agree anything is rootable with s-off.
However, s-off does not allow you to downgrade back to 2.1, nothing but a hack allows that, specifically the flash_image. And that's the thing, I'm not seeing where anyone would need s-off to make that portion of things happen. If it did, it blows the theory I admit but what step precisely would require s-off? He's not flashing any zips in the bootloader until the PB31IMG that was the official signed 2.1 zip that doesn't even require s-off in the first place, it can be flashed with s-on.
Anyway, I admit I'm still a little shaky on this but IMO we are looking a different scenario than those false positives posted in other threads. Those people didn't know they had s-off and were able to flash clockwork back, that's a given. But the key here was being able to revert to a former OS which is not an easy task and in my mind, does NOT involve the presence or absence of s-off to do so. If that can be repeated, root and s-off can both be acquired on Froyo with Unrevoked 3.
Alright guys, wish me luck.. I'm installing adb now, will post results.
I'm using a non-rooted, S-ON Droid Incredible, 2.3.4.. AMOLED.
Fingers are crossed.

You can downgrade as long as you have the right radio before using the RUU. Since you can use the Froyo RUU to return completely to stock, I don't see why you couldn't use the official Eclair RUU to downgrade even further as well.

Sorry for a stupid question
But i'm just so confused with all the several stock roms that HTC offers and i just want to figure out which unbranded stock rom (don't require root) should i go with that would receive updates as they get released and would play nice with the Bell Incredible S S710a?
Also if i'm correct, after i S-OFF the device, i just need to install the recovery and then i can just flash the rom throug the recovery (just as i did with my X10) or is there something i'm missing (looking through these guides - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1145541 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1036581)?

How did you S-OFF? Did you use Revolutionary? If so that is the difference. My was unlocked and S-OFF using the XTC Clip so I didn't need to use Revolutionary.

Meh, might just give up and try flashing the Android Revolution HD rom (since it's essentially that rom, just cleaned up).

Yeah that is the best course of action since you have the Revolutionary S-OFF HBOOT. It is going to prevent you from installing the official IncS Sense 3.0 RUU/ROM. I tried to build a rooted, stock ROM from the 3.08.405.3 RUU/ROM for you guys, but it will only boot if you have the official HBOOT 2.00.0000. It will not boot on the Revolutionary S-OFF HBOOT.
Hello, Iam noob in rooting and there is sooo much information about that, so my head goes burn, my simple question is only - can you recommend me the most easiest way to root my Incredible S? I want to install new ROM. Version Hboot 2.00, android 2.3.5 and never S-OFF, rooted. I have to downgrade HBOOT? Thank you so much
Oh look it's first sticky on the forum! Just a simple read through the first page of the forum might help just sayin'.
Anyways, this seems to be the easiest way to root...it's definitely easy to understand even if you have few to minimum understanding of rooting and flashing.

Since you are already S-OFF, then you should be able to flash ClockworkMod recovery in FASTBOOT USB mode. Once you have CWM installed, you can make a 'nandroid' backup of your current ROM, apps and settings. Then you can flash the latest and greatest version of su-3.0.x.zip to gain root.
This will leave your current ROM, apps and settings intact.

Since you have permanent S-OFF, you don't have to worry about whether to unlock HBOOT 2.00.0000 or downgrading to run Revolutionary, etc.
You should be able to flash ClockworkMod recovery, you could flash HBOOT 1.13, flash a new radio, etc.
You just need to get familiar with using FASTBOOT USB mode and all of the options that fastboot.exe can do.
I am speaking from experience. I have a permanent S-OFF IncS and even after I run the Android 2.3.5/Sense 3.0 RUU and it upgraded my HBOOT to version 2.00.0000, I was able to flash ClockworkMod recovery and install su-3.0.x.zip and root the ROM. I have also since reflashed back to HBOOT 1.13.

With HBOOT 1.13, ClockworkMod recovery is able to flash a custom ROM in one step. With HBOOT 2.00.0000, after you flash a custom ROM in ClockworkMod, you manually have to extract and flash the boot.img file in the custom ROM's zip file. In other words it is easier to flash custom ROM's with CWM and HBOOT 1.13 than it is with HBOOT 2.00

The only option you have right now for ICS is to run a custom ROM from the Development section and all of those are already rooted.
If you are talking about the official ICS OTA/ROM from HTC, we will have to wait and see if it will be rootable or not.
Once again since you have a permanent S-OFF on your phone, you shouldn't have to worry about. If you install the official ICS ROM and you lose root, you should be able to reflash CWM and then install su-3.0.x.zip to gain root.

I think that was made with an old hboot in mind, before HTC started 2.0 bootloaders and the lib partition. You could try it, but I don't know any effects.
As the time it stands from my knowledge reading around here, once you go 2.0+ you can't go back down unless you go to htc-dev and unlock thus putting your phone's imei in their database

PERSONALLY I ALREADY KNOW THE REASON IT WONT BOOT WITH OLD HBOOT.
it goes like this.
If you want to support older Hboots it's really quite easy:
- on the installer script of your rom do not try to mount the /system/lib partition as it does not exist
- on the ramdisk, init.saga.rc, just take out the line that is mounting the partition, or at the very least, take out the "wait for mount" statement, that blocks until the partition is mounted, and that's what's causing the boot to fail.

Yeah, I have a sense 3.6 rom stock made from the RUU and it's booting and working fine, even after partition format etc.
I don't know if he can make it work since he doesn't have a vivo to test with, but he is doing sense 4.0.
Normally I don't like sense, but this is just a side project to get this working with the rev hboot.

I'm here with 6.13.1002 as well, and I would prefer to stay with that Hboot...
BTW kaijura I came from hboot 2.0 without passing by htc-dev, I just run nonverbose's tool...
Originally that tool used hellion bug or something similar but now uses tacoroot and work for sure with hboot 2.0 ( personally tested) not sure about 2.02.
The step are simple: just extrat the tool and answer the question...
If I recall corretly: downgrade, I don't have htc-dev unlock phone, I want to create a goldcard and that's it!
The script does all, u have only to reboot the phone and tell him when is rebooted!
Interesting, thanks for the share. I will read into it on the tacoroot.
Here is a link for stock HTC Sense 3.6 ICS 4.0.4 from the Chinese RUU. It's not based on Niks' or Lost prophet's rom. I just made it so it's working for 6.13.1002 hboot for anyone who wants to test it to try it out instead of waiting.
I don't intend to develop this rom or add features to it. It's just a test rom to see if it works and if you want to see what sense 3.6 is like without having to upgrade hboot.
STOCK CHINESE RUU WORKING FOR HBOOT 6.13.1002:
some bugs I've noticed:
- No play store, this may be due to related with CN region as they don't have google services (gmail, youtube, etc). Need to figure if it's APK related or something else.
- SU isn't loaded in yet. I'll have to look later what's wrong.
- Wifi MIGHT or MIGHT NOT work. It seems to be a regional issue and I need SU to install wifixmanager to test it.
- don't know what else, I didn't use it very long.
Rest of everything should be working. Mobile data, camera/camcorder, gmail, youtube, browser. Like I said, it's just a test rom so you know what sense 3.6 is like when the official one is ready.

kaijura, first yes its correct that with the newish tacoroot exploit we no longer need to unlock via htcdev (thanks for pointing this out guys).
Secondly I have successfully swapped from revolutionary hboot to blackrose 2.02 and then back to revolutionary, no PC connection required. Here's the steps I took (and that others may at their own risk )
Make sure you have a nandroid or rom you wish to install. I know I shouldn't have to tell most people this so late in the game but anythings possible.
Download blackrose and extract hboot_blackrose.img to your sdcard root. Its not necessary to use the root folder but fits in this context.
Open terminal, or download and open if you dont have, and type:
Code:
su
dd if=/sdcard/hboot_blackrose.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18
then reboot into recovery.
4ext touch recommended that I do a full system format, but you could probably just get away with formatting cache.
At this stage you should probably verify that you have actually installed the blackrose, by entering hboot.
To revert to revolutionary, its pretty much the same procedure. Simply put revhboot.img in your sdcard root folder and type:
Code:
su
dd if=/sdcard/revhboot.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18
Reboot into recovery and format the cache, and verify again if necessary.
Edit: using the dd command does carry some risk. You should check the md5sums before flashing. This can be done in terminal
Code:
md5sum /sdcard/hboot_blackrose.img
Code:
md5sum /sdcard/revhboot.img
or in your favourite file explorer.
hboot_blackrose.img
MD5: 9ccb6c894bba1a32a551a6569fc6fccd
revhboot.img
MD5: b9758c59b660cb3dcf5037ec5ccd6b78
I am still on the revolutionary Hboot, and I do not intend to change unless there is either a performance improvement, or if I have to.
I am on ice cold sandwich
I dont really want to be messing with things I dont usually mess with, just as a precaution
Haven't you guys got around the problem anyway?

"ramdisk modded to remove new lib partition"
Just my 2 cents
And thanks to the devs for all your hard work
hboot 7.0....
i was able to install latest rom [Rom] WE WANT ICS v2 by Nikhil007 a.k.a Nikhil Dhayatkar with ur mentioned hboot without problems....i also wouldnt change it because of the possible trouble....so it seems to work also with other hboot then blackrose...at least for me
I am on 6.13.1002 HBOOT as well - revolutionary. Not intending to change anytime soon either. Thanks for the support kaijura.
i'm using hboot 6.13.1002 here,
not intend to switch to higher hboot if possible ...
I am pretty happy staying on the Revolutionary H-boot if possible. Will see what happens in regard to development, why root further if I don't need to
I am also on revolutionary hboot 6.13.1002 here. i would also like the option of leaving my current bootloader alone.
good luck & thanks for the support kaijura

The differences are noted on the Opening Post. mike1986 for the most part has always tried to keep ARHD's look and feel pretty stock although his tweaks simply make Sense very usable.
Already read the post..It say i need new Hboot but my current Hboot is 6.1.3 which mean that i cant flash the rom..
Me too. I'm keeping away from anything that wants me to switch to blackrose hBoot. It's a pity, I like ARHD. Mike, do something, to make /lib a part of root partition, than as a separate partition, as needed by HTC ICS 4.04.

You install it through windows or from adb. Check the blackrose topic.

AFAIK that new /lib partition is needed because otherwise / or /system will be too small. So, as I understand it some time you'll have to upgrade hboot or you can't use the latest ROMs...

to a first approximation, it appears to work fine without blackrose.
I installed ARHD3.0 on my IncS with HBOOT 6.13 this morning and no problems so far.

I just put this file (http://d-h.st/SjY) on an SD-Card & boot into bootloader to flash BlackRose, but I have full S-OFF with XTC-Clip so I'm not sure what other configurations are able do this!

P.S. Removing BlackRose is a different story. I have to use the official binary through windows to command it to uninstall.
