Stock, ICS Update new to Samsung devices. I own a Note for 10 days. It is on 2.3.6 XILB1 which I found out to be Italian Global. It is not rooted.
I would like to upgrade to ICS but when I searched the forum the are many threads with download links and I am confused wichone to download(wipe or non wipw???)
In a thread I've found
Just download the ICS file and flash via Odin.
1. Unrar ICS file.
2: Power off the phone.
3: Press and hold Power+Home+Vol Down to enter download mode.
4: Open ODIN and under PDA, load the tar/md5 file which you just downloaded.
5: Under ID:COM, wait for the device to be detected. You will see a yellow color with some port number inside it.
6: Hit Start and wait for ODIN to flash the new ICS firmware on your Galaxy Note.
As far as I understand I need PC Odin to flash but will it harm my device to flash a Germany Rom to Italian device. With HTC I had to change the CID according to ROM or Super CID the phone.
I prefer a clean install and setup so I don't mind loosing all my data and install all my apps back. Also I am mot planning to root my Note for now since I've only used root change boot animation and install Quick Boot and I can live without them.
A link to direct me to the correct file would be very appreciated.
thanks and best regards...

You may want to refer to this forum http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/2337733
lots of guide
- Download the ROM from here
- Open PC Odin
- Go into Download mode on your Note
- Extract the zip and flash the md5 file
Voila.
the md5 file goes in the pda slot of pc odin, if your not familiar with it and make sure you have the samsung drivers installed, easy way is to install kies and plug your phone in and wait for it to connect once to ensure you have the proper drivers
I keep getting stuck on zimage. Uninstalled kies and left the drivers, so its not that. Any ideas. Never had issues flashing my epic with odin.

If your phone is able to go into Download mode, you should be fine.
You can use odin to flash stock eclair 2.1 onto your SGS. If you're not too sure how, have a look around the forum and there should be plenty of advice on how to go about it.
If, somehow, you can't find anything, reply here again and I'll see if I can help you out.
I haven't done the same thing but the result is pretty much the same, stuck with a boot loop after installing Bell provided Android 2.2 upgrade. I can now only get into download mode, could you guide me where I can the instruction to load the stock 2.1 firmware that contains the bootloader and where I can download the files so I can try to make it work again. Thanks
Everything you need, you should be able to find on http://www.samfirmware.com , including Odin (the software used for flashing) and some guides.
Be sure to download the firmware for your location ie. Europe, Asia, America.
Read darkys thread. Do the long install. Simple.
Also the first boot with darkys rom takes about ten mins. It says so on install instructions. People panic for no reason because they get impatient
Downloaded the firmware already but it is in a .rar password protected, I am looking for the .tar of the same file I9000UGJH2. Found another site with the .exe but not sure how to use this one with Odin, the exe autoextract, but the file does not contains the .tar file and cannot find the info on how to configure Odin with this. I Will continue my research. Thanks for the info
The password is different depending on which file you downloaded. Go back to samfirmware and see whether the file had a # or ## or neither.
# Pass = samsung-firmwares.com
## Pass = samfirmware.com
Just flash any stock firmware via Odin and you'll be fine.
Thanks all for your assistance, can't wait to leave work and try that.
Maxx
thanks
i got it working again flashed with odin stock firmware

Thank you for quick reply. I started compiling the files need to flashing. So far, I could do following. Please advice me whether I am on the right path or not.
1. Rooted my tab with Z4root. Now I got root permission.
2. Downloaded Odin3 v1.7.exe and s1_odin_20100803.pit for flashing
3. Downloaded Roto-JMI-Full-v2.zip and Roto-JMI-Upgrade-v2.zip
Now, using Odin PDA button, I want to flash Roto-JMI-Full-v2.zip ?
Few questions:
a) Is this correct way of flashing or I am missing something?
b) Does above flash install Recovery also ?
c) which files need for PHONE and CSC files ?
d) Which firmware best suitable for Indian Tab ?
Thank you in advance for clarifying above.
I really appreciated reply for my questions as it would allow me to move forward. I will ensure a good documentation at the end of the process for benefit of other users.

Install Adfree or something which requires root acess for installation. Once rooted download something like root explorer from market which allows you to backup the modem.bin file. Or me or somebody else can just upload the file here.
Read the post/link in the thread where you downloaded Roto's JMI rom.
Use the .pit file from Roto's link not the thing which you posted...same place where you got the same ROM file. If you are flashing first time/from another rom then use the Full v2 zip file. Else use Update v2 when flashing from one of Roto's rom.
Connect the tab to your pc, reboot and go into download mode...press power+vol down button while rebooting...a yellow triangle icon with an android digging will come up...to get out of download mode, just keep the power button pressed till it rebooted normally.
Once in download mode, open up Odin and check that the yellow com box option is on. Check repartition option to ensure everything is wiped and you have a fresh install from scratch.
For PIT select the pit file downloaded from roto's link
For PDA select the Full.tar file
For PHONE select the modem.bin file
For CSC leave it blank...
Once done, recheck and hit start.
PLEASE CHECK ROTO'S JMI V2 THREAD IN THE DEVELOPEMENT SECTION...it has a link to howto which is old but gives some idea of how to proceed...for pit, pda, phone follow as I suggested and things will go fine...

I followed the steps after flashing 'full' tar, it rebooted tab, started the normally. After that, I verified that, all applications , phone (GSM) and wifi working fine.
Now my question is do I really need to flash *second* tar file ? what is it for ?
^^No. It is only for people upgrading from previous versions! You are good to go!
Now, I want to install CWM recovery. Please some one can confirm below steps:
1. Make sure to have Samsung Kies installed, and your tab at least connected once, to be sure the drivers are correct.
2. Your Tab must be Rooted.
3. If you wish to do a backup, now is the time.
4. You will need an SD Card with enough free space for the filesystem conversion, and to put the Overcome ROM on before we start. (An empty 4gb should be plenty, as long as it is empty, or close too)
5. Download and Extract the following file to your computer: http://www.apksmash.com/corodius/galaxytab.zip (Contains "Odin3 v.1.7.exe" "Overcome_Kernel_v1.0")
Now, we will Install the Kernel and perform the EXT4 filesystem conversion.
1. Turn off your Galaxy Tab.
2. Turn your Galaxy Tab on into DOWNLOAD mode (Press Volume DOWN and Power On at the same time).
3. Open Odin3 v1.7.exe on your PC.
4. Connect your Galaxy Tab to your PC via the USB cable.
5. Make Sure the ID:COM box is highlighted yellow (meaning it sees your tab).
6. Click on the PDA button and select the Overcome_Kernel_v1.0.tar file you downloaded earlier (make sure PDA is ticked after selecting the file).
7. The only boxes ticked should be:
A. Auto Reboot
B. F. Reset Time
C. The PDA tickbox
8. Click start and wait for PASS! to show highlighted green on Odin.
9. Your Galaxy Tab will Reboot, and get stuck on the Samsung Boot Screen. This is fine.
10. Turn your Galaxy Tab off by holding the power button for about 5 seconds.
11. Turn your Galaxy Tab on into RECOVERY mode (Press Volume UP and Power On at the same time).
12. The Galaxy Tab will now perform the EXT4 conversion.
13. Sit tight, depending on how much data you have, this can take quite a long time.
14. Once finished, click reboot system now (by pressing the power button).
At this point, You have installed the Overcome Kernel with CWM included and converted the Filesystem to EXT4. It has been reported that many stock ROMs will boot and run fine now, however some may not, but it just depends on your ROM etc.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11713685.
Would be there any problem ? or is there any easy way to install CWM Recovery.
I had bricked my tab while modding battery icon and it was not booting now. Now i want to flash with the custom rom available here. I am noob to flashing so just want to confirm the steps mentioned above applicable to the bricked tab. Can somebody guide me for bircked tab.
Please mentioned the good custom rom with Ext4 conversion at the time of install. I am using indian tab.

Can you get into download mode? If yes then you should be able to flash...but I would suggest checking"I bricked my tab" threads in general or developement section...

As the title says
Not bothered about root either as the tutorial I found seems to think we all want root !
Thanks

Having looked at the thread regarding a similar predicament that I have (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1783556), I'm keen to know I can use ODIN to put on a new ROM. Basically these are the steps I've followed;
1. Used KIES to update my ROM from Gingerbread to ICS
2. Use ODIN to update root my phone with CM9 safe kernel (not knowing it would have been significantly better to have copied my new AOKP ICS ROM to the internal SD card first)
3. Rebooted my phone and cannot get past 'SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE GT-N7000' logo.
4. I can still boot into download mode and use ODIN but wondered how I should use it to install a ROM as none of the ROM's I've downloaded, are in the correct .tar, md5, smd format, that OSIN is looking for ?
Some pretty basic reading for you: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321268

First of all, I'm not sure if this is the answer your looking for, but here is it anyway.
IN PC ODIN, there is a 'PDA' button (same button you flashed your kernel to), you need to download the ROM's zip file and flash it from there.
Stock ROM file you download is zip, you need to extract it one time to get into .tar, then you can use that file with pda of odin.

Would these be the files needed to get my phone back up and running? I am new to Android and screwed my phone up after a factory reset, now it just reads downloading for ages and does nothing. I still get a screen that reads Hyperdroid RedPill Recovery when i power on with volume button up pressed. Volume down I get Android man and it reads downloading but does nothing.
I have looked all over for this situation but seem to get a piece here and there and not the exact same issue all in one so I am reluctant to just do something and make it worse.
Please advise
That is downloading mod, it won't do anything but remain as it is, if you don't do anything.
You need to connect you device to PC in this state and have to use odin
Read 1st line on my sign and read post#2, you will get full instruction, how to use odin.

Hi, after a failed rooting my s3 blocked, i tryed to put on the I9300XXALE8_I9300ITVALE7_ITV (i'm from italy), but now is blocked on the Samsung logo. Also when i go in download mode it says
Odin mode
Product name : GT-I8190
Custom binary donwload : YES (17 counts) (ye i tryed 17 times to fix it)
Current binary : custom
System status : Official
So i have some questions : Can i send it to assistance and they can repair it (with warranty)? , should i try to re download the I9300XXALE8_I9300ITVALE7_ITV file? ( i tryed with 3 versions of odin, with 2 of them it says : failed, with the newest it says : pass but it blocks on Samsung logo)
Or there is something other that i can do?
(sry bad english)
Are you flashing a i9300 firmware to a i8190?
No wonder why it doesn't work.

+1 Just find the ROM you want to install here http://live.samsung-updates.com/index.php?device=GT-I8190 then download and flash this http://download.chainfire.eu/448/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.99r5.zip and finally go and install this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.supersu (or update if you have it installed after you flash the file above). I can root any phone with this simple method
NOTE : It doesn't matter which country you're from, you can flash any firmware you like, so why not be it the latest one available for your device (ANF3 at the moment)? You can still change language to Italian after flashing so there's really no difference between regions

I've never rooted a phone so I was just wondering how to do it like this? I've read some guides but it's really unclear still, one that I tried simply didn't work (the one where you flash CWR with Odin as the first step). Can you/someone tell me how to do this exactly, please? This is what I'm thinking atm:
1) If I already have the latest version I'm happy with, do I still need to download that version again or can I just go ahead with the SuperSU flashing part?
2) How do I in practice flash the SuperSU zip file? I currently have Odin v.3.0.7 and Minimal ADB and Fastboot installed on my PC. Thanks for any help!

If you don't have the latest firmware on your phone, download it from the link I gave (it's a .md5 file). Now go to Developer Options in your phone's settings and tick USB Debugging. Power off your phone. After that enter download mode on your phone by pressing power+volume down+home button while turning it on. You'll see a big message on your screen saying "Downloading, don't unplug target". Now plug your s3 mini into the pc and start Odin. Select PDA and find the .md5 file from before. Make sure that f.reset time and re-partition are unchecked and then press start. Once it's done odin will say "pass" and your phone will reboot. Congrats, you now have the latest firmware on your s3 mini
Now in order to root it, you need a custom recovery so let's go
On Google search "TWRP 2.7.1.1 Android-Andi xda" and download it from the attachments of his post (it's a .md5 file again). Again turn off the phone and enter Download Mode like before. Now do the same steps with Odin as the first time (with the firmware), but this time select the TWRP.md5 file instead of the firmware one in PDA section of Odin. Make sure all the options on the left are ticked/unticked exactly like the first time and hit Start. The "Pass" message should be displayed and the phone should reboot.
Congrats, you now have the latest TWRP Recovery on your s3 mini
And the last step - rooting it
Download the SuperSU.zip from the link in my post and copy it to your device's memory (internal or external). Now in order to enter Recovery Mode you need to turn off your phone and turn it back on by holding the power+volume up+home buttons until you see a "TeamWin" message on your screen. This recovery is touch based so just select install, choose the SuperSU.zip file and flash it. Reboot the phone.
Now you're rooted and on the latest firmware arty:
For future updates do the same. Just change the firmware .md5 file with the latest one available. The rest is the same xD
Man, I got tired ...
