Replacing 8.9 hard drive with SSD drive - Galaxy Tab 8.9 General

Has anyone been able to do that? It will really speed up the device.

Uh what?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium

As I understand, Galaxy 8.9 has a SATA hard drive rotating at 4500RPM. It will be great if that hard drive could be replaced with solid state drive. Then the data access will be instantaneous.

It is no where near as simple as replacing a hard drive like you would on a computer, plus any SDD you could get your hands on would more then likely be way too big for it
Here is a link to a techrepublic article showing how to tear down the Galaxy Tab 8.9 but i personally think what you are propsing is impossible.

Umm No the 8.9 does NOT have an sata drive in it it has a solid state NAND flash chip hardwired to the PCB. So the info you got was way out of left field.

You make my day! It is soo funny

[Q] Is possible to use Apple usb cable with the Galaxy Tab?

Hi guys,
I saw that the Apple usb cable can fit in the Galaxy port, now the question is: can we use the Apple usb cable with the Galaxy? Does anyone have the wire scheme for both cables. Could be useful to use Apple cable as spare...

It'd be awesome if it did. It really would. That'd me we could use any iAccessories as speakers and so forth. So yeah, definitely understandable if they did. But something in my heart says its just not going to be.
Wait and see eh ?
Yes it would be nice, but would be enough if the wires in the cable are the same, and if would be possible to use it instead of the original.

I red somewhere, that it's not possible, and you can brake your Tab, because of different wiring

Where did you see this? The cable certainly does not fit into my tab's port. The connectors look similar but they are not the same.

Infact my question is more about the wiring. You're right it doesnt fit, but just (it seems to me) for the 2 small metal parts on the upper corners of the connector (tab side),shouldnt be difficult to mod it,but I'm not going to try for nothing if wires are setup differently in the cable.
At the moment i'm more concern on discover how to recharge it via usb connected on a pc or mac!!

Are you now in the mood for spamming?

Do you think this would work?

I found this item on Ebay - OTG Micro USB Host All In One Card Reader For Samsung S2 i9100 i9300 i9220 i9250
(search for item # 390452881730)
it seems like it should work assuming you have stickmount installed. Anyhow have an adapter like this?
I was going to get the regular cable - but thought this would have the sd card reader built into the cable and could be handy to only have to carry one cable (vs multiple cables/adapters)
It claims to be for the Galaxy S2/3 so it should work fine. It still needs a cable so I can't see where the advantage lies over an otg cable and usb stick card reader, that said it's cheap so go for it.
So hold on, this adapter would still need the otg cable? The description says it is an otg built in... not sure I follow you.

It doesn't need an otg cable it plugs right in to your phone/tablet. This is what I have been looking for for so long man thanks for finding it! I do photography and this is gonna be so awesome to sort photos from a shoot without having cables everywhere and movies on long flights. Double thanks for you!

i gotta get one of these to stuff in my camera bag for work, thanks for the idea !
When I said it needs a cable I meant it connects to the tablet by a cable, not an otg. I'm going by the images in the eBay auction which seem to show a micro usb socket on the back. If that's the case I can't really see the advantage, as I said ^
Looking at the images, one would think that if your N7 is in just about any case you wouldn't be able to connect this easily. I'll stick with a cable...

Humm... Everything I've read regarding the Note 2 expectations (from reputable websites), says the Note 2 will have a slightly larger BUT NARROWER screen (viewed in portrait mode).... A similar asthetic / screen ratio to the Galaxy S3.... Not sure about anyone else, but I hate that "qHD" aspect ratio... It just makes the portrait view too small IMO... Personally, I'm perfectly happy with the Note as it is
Sent from my SGH-T879 using xda premium
Here's my thought on the matter...I could care less that the N2 is being announce at the end of the month. I knew that before I bought my N1 and that is perfectly fine with me.
Samsung hoodwinked me once with the GS3 and the lack of UMS. I'm going to wait this one out and see where the dust falls with the N2. If the N2 supports UMS then I'll most likely upgrade when possible BUT I have a sneaky suspicion that it will end up being more like the GS3 and not support UMS.

USB Mass Storage, the Note doesn't have either. There is mods to get around it, but the standard is MTP (Media Transfer Protocol).
I thought the workaround for that was to select "USB debugging"? I haven't tried it, but it seems to work on the GS3?
Sent from my SGH-T879 using xda premium
No. Are you just assuming? I have had both phones and you need an app to enable ums, or have it cooked in like flapjaxxx roms.

Sorry but you do not know what your are talking about. Please stop.
The Note DOES have UMS. It is there, no mods required. It come from the factory that way and the phone has MTP too.
Heck I even did a write up on how to simplify the process of it down to a click.

No, you cannot use "USB debugging" on the Note if you want to use the (built-in by default) UMS feature. It will tell you to turn it off.
I would have never bought the Note had it been missing UMS. Just say no to MTP!
Sorry for the oversight..... I never use mass storage mode..... I have a Samsung USB dongle that I use just for plugging USB "thumb" drives into my Note..... Kies is just way too slow, so in that respect I can see where just copying straight from PC to Note would be much faster in mass storage device mode.... I just seldom use it and use my adapter instead (old habit from my GS2-days)

A few things have me lost with what you're saying. I don't know what the dongle is that you're talking about~how that works, and the GS2. Do you mean the Galaxy S II? If so, that has UMS also - no MTP.
Also UMS is used in almost anything with a USB plug/port. TV's, Car Stereo, PC's, DVD Players, Game Consoles. I also use my devices on these too.
Rosedog....
The "dongle" I'm referring to is a micro-USB-to-female-USB adapter. It lets you plug things like those tiny USB drives directly into your phone, so the phone will read the data and play (or copy) it directly to the phone. I call it USB hosting capability, while I've seen others refer to it as USB-OTG (USB-On The Go). The Galaxy S2 (GS2), Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 and Galaxy Note all have the USB hosting capability so they can read USB drives just like a PC can.... I use that feature almost exclusively, and rarely, if ever, plug my Note directly into a PC

That's cool so I won't miss removable storage on my HTC one, and I can use my USB pen drive and many other devices and I can use same connector I bought for S3, That's really practical If I am shooting large video I can transfer video file to usb and never run out of space, but r u sure will it work out of box and without rooting?

Allows you to plug in USB flash sticks, SD card readers etc for expandable storage. Can't run anything that draws too much power (ie etc hard drives) but otherwise works well.
You need a micro usb - usb OTG adaptor.

USB otg will always be an inferior option compared to hot swappable micro sd.
What is more convenient, micro SD card or a cable sticking out of your phone + a USB flash drive?

For me, USB. I don't always have to watch movies. When I have to, I'll just plug the USB, maybe I'll copy the movie to internal and then I'm cable free, after watching I'll delete it. This way no cable, no swapping of SDs and internal doesn't pose to be a problem
