[Q] Rooting + installing Dark Knight on I9000 with firmware 2.3.6 - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I would like to root my phone and install a new rom (last version of Dark Knight), but it's my first time and I would like to make sure that it is done right. I have a few questions before I begin, so I don't screw up my phone.
1. What is the best way to root my Samsung Galaxy S (I9000)? Does it mather which firmware version is on the phone? Mine is 2.3.6.
2. After this is done can i install the latest dark knight version on my phone or do I need to do anything else?
3. Do I need to update my kernel as well? I now have XWJW5. I've been reading alot but I can't find the right steps.
I really hope someone can help me with these questions.

for root look here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723596
2. Ye you can, through CWM
3. XWJW5 is not a kernel it's a modem.

If XWJW5 is not a Kernel, then how has my phone been running for the last month? Bud just get a root kernel for JW5 from semaphore and flash it in odin as pda.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14481782
Download the one that says semaphore 2.7.4. tar.

Old Firmware?

Hey guys,
today I got a used Galaxys I9000, it came with the Kernel-Version: 2.6.29 and the Build ECLAIR.AOJG1.
I saw that there is no compatible root for this Build, so do I have to flash a new firemware with odin or shall I do a firemware update via Kies ?
Thank you very much.

If i were you i would update via odin. MUCH quicker and far less hassle, also you can go straight for a custom rom.
can you prefer a rom ? I would need one that allows me to install cm 9 or ICS.
So it needs to be rooted and has CWM installed right ?.
Im afraid to brick my new phone, some im asking.
thank you again.
I prefer you cyanogen 7.1 or a stock with semaphore kernel.

So I upgraded to GINGERBREAD.XWJVI with Kies.
In order to root this version , I'm just flashing this Kernel "CF-Root-XW_DBT_JVI-v3.7-CWM3RFS" from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
right ?
thank you.
Please Someone , I dont wanna destory my phone..

What is the advantage of flashing a sephamore kernel?

Problems finding what I need....

Hey there my partner has bought herself a gt-i9000 still running eclair. Being a flashaholic myself I though I'd root and flash a more updated and smoother ROM for her, but alas searching around I cannot for the life of me find the right CF root kernel.
If anyone could point me in the right direction for the CF root and also a stable ROM ICS or JB preffered would be great. Phone details below.
Gt-i9000
2.1 update-1 (eclair)
Baseband xxxJG3
Thanks in advance

Seems like there is no CF-Root for Eclaire. I would suggest to update to the latest version through Kies or take a ROM from here and flash with Odin. As you will flash ICS/JB anyway, it doesn't matter which one you choose.
Thanks so my options are update via kies then cf-root and flash ICS/jb or flash newer firmware ROM then cf-root flash ICS/jb?
Sorry I've never used kies to update and I've always been able to flash a cf-root kernel with updating...

Exactly. With Kies you will get at least 2.3.3, maybe even 2.3.6. Note that the kernel hasn't changed since JW4 (2.3.6), so if you flash JW5 or later, you can use CF-Root for JW4.

can i update my gt-1000

Hi is it possible for me to update my Samsung galaxy tab
Model: GT-P1000
Firmware version: 2.2
Baseband version: P1000JXJM2
Kernel version:
2.6.32.9
[email protected] #1
Build number
FROYO.JPJM5
You will install Kies on your PC before, And put your Tab connect to USB. Well you can update via Kies.
sorry for my bad English
Good luck
hi there are no updates available thinking of rooting it but have no idea how and if i can do it with my tab i want version 2.3 or later
makes restock rom, recommend the "GB_Stock_Safe_v5" from overcome
and download your latest version (same region) from sammobile.com then flash it
Maybe you must to un-root your tab but I'm not sure that make you can update.
Warning all your data will be lost.

Yes there are plenty of ways to update your device.
You can simply install Samsung Kies, connect your tab and update to official gingerbread (2.3) or you can install a custom GB rom (Overcome Rom).
You can also choose to install ICS (4.0) or JB (4.1), various flavors like AOKP, CM9, CM10 etc.
To get started on custom GB or any other custom rom you should first root/stock your device using the Overcome guide/rom. The original thread is Here but the links are down so you should get the guide and safe-restock/rom files from the mirrors here.
Everything you need to do is included in the guide. Once you have installed Overcome rom you will be rooted and have a custom rom/kernel, from there if y0ou want to go up to ICS etc you simply put the rom on your sdcard, boot into recovery and flash the desired rom.
For me better upgrde to overcome rom..its more stable and have native 3g call..

[Q] My Galaxy Note GT-N7000

Hi everyone i have bought a second hand galaxy note n7000 which has a custom rom already installed on it
Android version
4.0.3
Baseband version
N7000DXLP5
Kernel version
3.0.15-franco.Kernel

i am wanting to go back to its original ics stock rom when the phone was first bought, how do i go about doing this, just to note i have
experience with rooting & flashing of roms but i just want to make sure i do it the best & correct way any help would be appreciated
Download the stock rom GB ot ics.
put the phone in download mode
connect to pc.
Open odin and select the rom file in pda
flash it
if u decide to go to gb.. then u can do a factory reset from recovery
if u chose ics, then u will need to install a safe kernel first before a factory wipe.
As it's second hand, once you're on rom of choice with rooted kernel, it may be worth installing the following app to check emmc for any possible damage:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.vinagre.android.emmc_check

done that & there is no damage
yes.. use pc odin.
May be worth doing full wipes before flashing while you're on safe kernel.

Rooting Help Required

Hi All,
Im thinking of rooting my Samsung Galaxy s3 4G and need some help before is start.
I was going to use this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1914394&highlight=i9305.
But after watching this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhSSmdqAXRM&feature=player_embedded i notice there are more options which may be easier.
Can someone please guide me so i dont mess my phone up?
Also where can i find the original firmware incase i need to reflash for warranty?
I also read that i need to backup my iemi but am unsure how i do this?
Cheers
You can download the firmwares via sammobile or via Samsung kies
I advise installing CWM ClockWork Recovery with Odin then flashing a custom ROM

I would advise doing this first...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1946915
Then root via this method =) (there are known problems with the 6.XXX touch recovery)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1914394
You now have root!
Then if you want the latest version straight from Samsung (4.1.2) flash this through CWM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2066767
Hope that helps =)
I was thinking of using the toolbox and hoping it was an all in one application.
Im really really new to Android.
Autoroot with stock recovery and mobile odin works best for me. I'm a noob too. Have flashed perseus kernal and pandoriams latest 4.1.2 and works great
