Ok some background I have i897 that i updated to the i9000 2.1 rom, then I updated to the i9000 2.2 froyo rom. Problem now is I cant downgrade back to i897 I have nandroid backup already done from the i897 when i restored that from the first i9000 2.1 rom it put everything back the same except for baseband which still ready gt i9000
I upgraded again to the froyo version, which I didnt really care for atm, I tried restoring again. I go into recovery mode and go to nandroid restore from back up and then it starts running and i get this error
e:cant mount /dev/block/mmcblk0 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0p1
(device or resource busy)
cant mount /sdcard
cant wipe or anything or format get same error
clockwork mod itself seems to still be working other then that. and the phone itself still works fine.
is there a i897 stock rom that came with the phone for odin that i can flash back to? the ones I have tried are on samsung-firmware site and all d/l are down. Cant d/l any of them. Know of any possible work around for clockwork mod?
This is a joke right? Read the sticky named something like "Odin one click downloader"

Clockwork only flashes the system img. You need to odin the stock rom then you can use your nandroid to restore from there....

yes dude I read the sticky I didnt realize it was a all in one, I didnt know there was more then 1 odin, But I did get it fixed with that thx anyway
I've got a newer captivate just recently through warranty due to it no longer charging. Well this one came factory with 2.2. I know 2.2 had 3e recovery and I've done the fix to flash unsigned files and was able to get into cwm but it failed everyone I tried to flash a rom. I've tried to flash standard 2.1 and rogers 2.1 via odin3 one click and odin 1.81 via the pit and tar files. Neither way will get my phone working on 2.1. So I have to resort back to the stock 2.2 or rogers 2.2. What am I doing wrong? I just want my custom roms back!!! Please find it in your hearts to help even though I've pissed off a few people with my 3e recovery question.

Try using the 3e recovery fix in Trusselo's sig - just unzip and use the .bat file with your phone plugged (in debugging).
It should let you flash a custom ROM after that. No need to go back to stock.
As for Odin, your phone could be a recent build and you need a specefic odin for 1010 and up.
EDIT: What was the error when you were trying to flash a ROM through cwm?

I unzipped the modified recovery file to the /bin folder via root explorer. Haven't read anything about a .bat file though.
Here is the error I received in cwm after selecting the rom zip:
E:cant mount /dev/block/mmcblk0 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0p1)
(device or resource buys)
E:can't mount SDCARD:ROM.zip

Well it's not really needed but the .bat file will run a command that will place the recovery for you through your computer.
Not needed since you moved it yourself using root explorer (make sure you're in mount r/w).
Did you try it after placing the new recovery and rebooting your phone?
what are you trying to flash?
how are you flashing it? with the fixed 3e recovery? or with cwm?
did you rename it properly 'update.zip' for 3e?

I was trying to flash continuum 4. I tried flashing it through cwm in recovery mode. Named the cwm file update.zip rebooted into 3e recovery mode (with the modded recovery file) selected "reinstall packages" then tried to select the continuum rom and thats where I got the error message.

when you select reinstall package, it searches for a file named update.zip on the root of your sd and flashes it so there's nothing more that you have to do.
Now did you fix your problem? I can't tell by the way you wrote that lol
Did you name the file update.zip? or did you name it update?
If you named it update.zip.. it reads it as update.zip.zip as it is a zip file. So all you have to do is to name is "update" with the ".zip" being the type of file.

So youre saying that I can flash roms without going into cwm ? I get into cwm by naming it "update" so I can open it up by selecting "reinstall packages" in the recovery menu. I cant have cwm renamed as "update" and the rom I want to flash as "update" right?

If you moved the 3e recovery fix in /system/bin, you will get into cwm recovery after reinstall package (I believe you have to to it twice as the phone only reboots the 1st time).
Now most of the new ROM have a kernel with built in cwm recovery in their full flash. Which is why you can rename the file to update and reinstall package.
But if you're on 2.2 - you do need the 3e recovery fix so you can get past the signature verification.
Also, you can only have 1 file named update(.zip) in the root of your sd and you want it to be the full ROM file.

If it takes you to cwm.. You can just "install zip from sd card" - What the file is called won't change anything.
And believe me, once you're on a custom ROM, you won't want to go back.

I understand what you're saying about flashing the rom from cwm but as I said before it gives me an error message as soon as I select the rom from my sd card. Could the rom file be corrupt or does that error message seem more phone related?
And I meant it as I wanted to go back to my old captivate and 2.1 bc I had no problems flashing roms on it. I've already flashed cognition and serendipity on my old phone with little problems. This new captivate is being a pain in my ass.

Well I'd say to try a different ROM. I duno which one you're trying to install but make sure of 2 things:
1. It's Froyo based.
2. It's a full flash ROM (not only a update)

Hi guys,
I am getting an error as you were getting when trying to install a custom ROM on my Samsung Galaxy S.
I am currently running on stock Gingerbread 2.3.3.
Baseband version : I9000DDJV5
Kernel Version: [email protected] #2
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.DDJV9
I rooted my phone using SuperOneClick and installed ROM Manager on it. Then, I flashed ClockworkMod recovery using it. Now, I am trying to flash Cyanogenmod 7.2 on my device and have downloaded it and kept it in the root directory of the SDcard. Now, whether I go to recovery mode manually or using ROM Manager, I am getting the error as below:
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:failed to seek in /cache/update.zip (Invalid Argument)
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
Also, I get only four options in the recovery mode, viz, reboot, apply update from SDcard, wipe data, wipe cache partition.
I get the same error when I try to Backup my current ROM using ROM Manager.
I searched through threads and found that some people have had similar errors but there is no solution I could find which worked for me.
I have tried clearing my download cache. Also, the download is not corrupt as I am getting the same error when trying to create a back up..
Is there any way I can correct this? Or is there any other work around for flashing like using Odin? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Yes, I can get into download mode..but how to proceed after that?
I am currently running on my stock rom JV9.. so, you mean to say that I should first upgrade to JVU using download mode and then proceed to upgrading it further?
Can you please also tell how to upgrade to JVU using download mode?
Thanks
SIMPLE WAY TO ROOT AND FLASH LATEST ICS
1. Flash by Odin (download Odin) Semaphore 1.2.0 kernel (as PDA, UNtick repartition, UNtick reboot).
2. Take out battery.
3. Go into recovery (vol up + home + power, release power after few secs)
4. In recovery mount internal SD (sdcard) and plug phone to PC. Delete all files from internal SD (if you don't have any important files). Copy latest CM9 and gapps to internal SD. Unmount internal SD.
5. In "mounts" menu use every (excluding internal and external SD card!!!) "format" option.
6. Go to flash ZIP menu and choose CM9 ZIP, then gapps.
7. Turn off recovery (phone).
8. Turn on phone and wait to boot.
Hope I helped.
Re:
Hi,
Problem here is that you didn't flash ClockworkMod recovery. If you only have four options it means you just have Recovery 3e - which is stock on most devices sold with GingerBread. I assume you are new to this so ClockworkMod recovery might be a little tricky to use.
I suggest you go to http://www.darkyrom.com/index.php?threads/darkyrom-v11-0-black-edition-android-4-0-4-ics.7941/ and follow the guide there.
I'm not saying that Darky has the best ROM there is but it does have a nice complete guide for flashing from stock.
Good luck

Hey.. I had flashed ClockworkMod Recovery using ROM Manager..It is also showing that my current recovery is : ClockworkMode 2.5.1.2
But you are right that when I boot into recovery mode, it shows Android System Recovery <3e> written at the top and gives only four options..
I went to the DarkyRom guide you mentioned..Here is the written guide
1-If you're coming from a Froyo (Android 2.2) or Gingerbread (2.3) ROM, follow these steps;
Have your phone rooted with CWM
Make a NANDROID backup & Titanium backup & backup anything you need or find important on a PC
Now, I don't understant what does the first step means exactly? How to go about rooting with CWM and make a NANDROID backup without ROM Manager?
Please help..Thanks
For an update..I found a guide to flash leaked version of 2.3.6 XWJW1 using Odin.. and I have been able to apply that successfully on my phone..I have rooted my phone again using Odin this time.. But now too, if I am trying to backup using ROM Manager, it is giving me the same error.. Is there a way or a guide that tells how to upgrade to cyanogenmod 9 or 7.2 using Odin..instead of doing it through the recovery mode..?
No. CM7 or CM9 you can only flash from custom recovery (CWM).
And one important thing: do NOT use ROM Manager, don't ask why
Just use my tutorial. But be aware that you have to delete anything from phone.

The semaphore you have is for ics.
Only ICS roms will do such as cm9.

You probably have damaged IMEI. If your IMEI in phone status starts with 000... you have damaged IMEI. Now you have to flash stock ROM by Odin with repartition (or 1st with Clear EFS option, 2nd without this option), backup EFS (Google!), use my guide again, and after that restore EFS.
After restarting phone, you'll get right IMEI and you should have network signal.
Hope I helped.
BTW, there's no explanation for damaging IMEI.
Hi all, posting my saga here if it would help someone, maybe you can comment or help. Here's the info and steps I've taken:
Info:
Device: Samsung Galaxy Tab™ 7.0" (AT&T) running stock Froyo
Model: SGH-I987 (aka GSM Galaxy Tab - P1000, T-Mobile SGH-T849)
Baseband: I987UCJK1
Steps Taken:
Rooted using SuperOnceClick - successful
Installed SGT-Bootloader-Patch-v1.00.apk, reported that I was safe, however I still cannot install unsigned zips…
To get around 3e recovery, I decided to flash a custom rom with cwm recovery built in. This is where things started to go downhill
I installed an overcome kernel which I thought would give me cwm recovery, however instead I got the thin white line on the right hand side and the robotic voice. Couldn't get to recovery
After the robotic voice I installed JJ4 bootloaders which got me a different splash screen, but at least it was booting now, still no recovery though
I think at some point I may have repartitioned as well
Then I tried a cyanogenmod install, things started to pickup because I got cwm recovery working, but the ROM install failed with an assert failure getprop("ro.product.device") … I assume this is because the device is actually and SGH-I987 but the rom is for a P1000. I deleted the assert from the install script in the zip file, however the install still fails, can't get past recovery.
The latest attempt this morning, I followed the instructions here "How to unbrick your galaxy tab" I downloaded the firmware from sammobile (Tablet, android, GT-P1000, UK / IRELAND, P1000XWJP9_P1000XXJPZ_P1000XEUKP1_HOME.tar) plus the Odin zip file containing the P1_add_hidden.pit file for repartition. Everything goes well in Odin however after reboot I have (see text and pictures below.)
E:failed to mount /data (Invalid argument)
E:install_application_for_customer: Can't mount /data
Your storage not prepared yet, please use UI menu for format and reboot actions. copy application failed.
When I reboot out of recovery, I get put into the glowing Samsung animation, which appears to blink, freeze then restart in an endless loop, I've let it run for sometime now, seems no end to it (see picture below)
I thinking I may have hosed my internal SD, but I'm not sure? Any advice to get this thing back running appreciated. My goal is to install Cyanogenmod 9 on it. Thanks.
Use overcome method, meaning you must do gb stock save v5 before overcome kernel.

Download Odin version 1.85 and put that on your computer. Download the stock rom for your device from sammobil.com. Extract the .tar.md5 file from that using 7-zip. From Odin, plug your phone in using the USB cable while your in download mode on the phone. in PDA in Odin find the md5 file. Flash that. It'll return your phone to like new condition. You'll lose anything stored on it so make sure you back up your phone first.

It really depends on the problem.
There are a small percentage of people that has broken/degraded internal memory chip (NAND chip).
For those, there are threads dealing with removing the chip or modifying ROMs to run on external SD card entirely.
I bought a Sprint HTC One off of ebay. Hoping to flash a custom rom, unlock with viperboys sim unlock helper and use it with Fido in Canada. I have rooted two htc phone in the past and am somewhat familiar with the process.
I got as far as unlocking the bootloader and flashing cwm. But then I hit trouble.
When I boot into cwm I get these errors.
E: Can't mount /cache/recovery/command
E: Can't mount /cache/recovery/log
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/log
E: Can't mount /cache/recovery/last_log
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log
My sd card looks fine in windows, I can open it and use it normally. So I put a zipped rom onto it and boot into cwm (i've also tried twrp). Then I go to flash a zip from sd card it shows up with the following folders.
0/
GPU/
audio/
mms/
video/
weather/
zchgd/
It seems odd to me, and it doesn't look at all like what I see in windows, and I can't find my rom.
I've tried the following to fix this issue.
Wiped everything I could in recovery.
Ran an RUU three times.
adb sideloading a rom from recovery (I tried Viper rom and InsertCoin but both failed on install)
I hope this makes sense (no pun intended) and thanks in advance for you guys help.

Try flashing another rom.
That smells like the wrong recovery -- which recovery and which version did you install (send the actual file and link if you can).
ClockworkMod v6.0.44

First off, thanks for the reply. I used ClockworkMod, tried both classic and touch with the same result. It looks like the right one to me but here is the link. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2173863. The file is attached, had to zip it do to upload limits.

Well, m7ul is for the GSM Ones -- you sure you have that? If so, you should not be flashing non-GSM ROMs.
If you don't actually have the GSM phone, you would want m7spr and *not* m7ul for your CWM recovery. I'd urge PhilZ (based on CWM), but CWM is great too.
In any event. Can you send the model number of your phone so we can be sure what you have?

Just flashed PhilZ recovery, looks like it should now. It's a sprint version model # M7_WLS. I'd like to flash a viper rom, there is a sprint version but I'm not using it on sprint. So, if I flash the GSM version can I still use the sim card slot?
Ok, I get it now. Sprint phone = Sprint rom. Gsm phone = Gsm rom.
Thanks tdhite for pointing me in the right direction with the recovery, I can now flash roms. I think I'm good to go now.
Go install the LTE app from the play store if you want to play with different carrier settings. I use it with @hawknest's excellent, latest EclipticONE kitkat (insertcoin base). Works like a champ.
