ok so the s off works now! so you can use this thread to talk about it. but i do have a question....
so now that we have s-off. how do you flash kernels? and recoveries? do we kust install the rom folder withought flashing the kernel that is inside the rom folder?

I believe you still have to flash the kernel separate from the rom. The only difference now would be instead of fastboot flashing the kernel you flash it through recovery.

I wouldn't try anything like that yet. Wait for the dev's to set everything up. That is what I did on another phone. HTC is a bit different, may be you flash only the zip file containing the rom and kernel. I do believe that on HTC most phones do allow you to flash one file instead of having to flash separate files unless you wanted a different kernel then the one provided. You would do this in recovery by flashing a zip file.

With my Inspire, I could flash a kernel alone, an entire ROMs image files separately, or an entire package containing everything in one flash...all through recovery.

So if there is a Rom with a kernel (boot.IMG) inside it we just go to recovery install zip and I'm good? That's all there is too it

nope we need to add in the code of the updater-script. I would say better stay off until we have atleast one rom with the in-built kernel flashing.
i ran controlbear.exe and it booted thru hboot fastboot usb and im on my rom its still asking "waiting device" i cant even get to the wire trick....... im on freenode but the devs are out im lost hopefully xda can help me
EDIT: my bad while on fastboot usb through Hboot, I started Controlbear.exe i ran as admin CMD opens it says the title and then starting up..... waiting device....
when i flash the boot.img first i get stuck with the JuopunutBear, green arrow, and phone.... with CMD stuck on waiting device
when i reflash my roms boot.img i run ControlBear.exe only to have the same msg on CMD waiting device but my rom boots up normal....

This makes no sense at all. If you're in Android OS, something went wrong.

attempted again but this time on my laptop and success on the second try!!!! i was previously using a windows XP and my laptop is a windows 7!
i'm success to S-OFF my 4G raider LTE (x710e) at the first time a try it few hours ago . everythings seems good. before S-OFF, i'm running on Holiraider Final cooked by Bananacakes, now after S-OFF, i'm little bit confused. stay with Hoilraider FInal ( this ROM excellent), or try some ICS ?.
if i decided to try ICS ROM, what should i do first? ['m already have WCXs recovery installed. do i need to run Ginger Official RUU, than Run ICS Official RUU before installed Custom ICS ROM? or i can jump over the step and Flash CUstom ICS ROM + kernel without flash RUU?

Easiest way is to supercid, then you can run the RUU or even just flash the Rom.zip. either will work (I did the latter since I use linux.) Then you can use any Rom. Ics needs the hboot update from the ruu

Yes it did and all I did was extract the controlbear.zip in my data folder that is used for the Vivid All In One toolkit so fastboot and adb everything is in the same directory ... Ran the .exe and everything went thru first attempt I missed the timing on the first but second I used a video I saw for another phone doing the wire trick but the timing they did definitely worked well...

That might have been my problem.. not having it in a folder like that. Managed to get it working though.

So, I still need to flash ics ruu, which mean I must flash ginger ruu from att. Since there is no official ruu yet for raider 4g. Do I Vitter kev?

Once you've got recovery installed and your rooted you can install any of the ICS roms. Some of them have already been updated so you don't have to flash the kernal anymore since we have s-off. Just make sure to check the instructions for the individual roms to see if you have to or not
I didn't run any ruu. Didn't relock my bootloader nothing like that. The simplest and least likely way of messing anything up I found was extract the ruu for ics. There will be a zip.called Rom.zip. I removed the hboot update itself (we don't need that one) from the zip. Then I.did fastboot reboot OEM-42. Fastboot flash zip Rom.zip.
Took a few minutes to flash. Rebooted and everything was working. The hboot I have is already higher (the one they included with juoponutbear) then the is update. But you need to get the new firmware from the ruu fo be flashed still.
Follow the guide previously posted and you should be fine tho. I just used a slightly different method to do.it myself

Getting ready to root my phone and flash a Rom in the couple of days...just wanna be sure I know everything before I go for it...this is my second android...my first being the infuse which did not require bootloader to be unlocked or this s off thing....
I'm just curious what s off does for the phone...Im pretty sure the unlocked bootloader just allows the phone to boot unsigned roms and stuff (correct me if I'm wrong) but I've never heard of s off...what is it ...what does it do?
Once I get more comfortable with this phone...I may begin to develop for it...
Thanks for any help with my question...any and all information you may think is useful is also appreciated...anything...I'm brand new to this phone and to HTC/sense

S-off is security off. It allows you to write to partitions you aren't able to write to with just an unlocked bootloader. This was important for users who didn't get an official ICS update from their carrier. Without an official update, they didn't have an ICS HBoot and couldn't run ICS ROMs. With s-off, you can flash custom/unsigned HBoot so ICS is available for those users. That's s-off's main purpose for this device, but has a bunch of other uses. However, s-off is not necessary unless you want ICS and don't have an official update from your carrier. You can also flash radios, splash screens, boot.img from recovery, etc, etc

Ok, thanks for the info...I was looking at one of the stickies and it said it wasn't needed but didn't say what it did...so I guess ill need it to flash a recovery

No. To flash a custom recovery all you need is an unlocked bootloader. Recovery is one of the partitions you can fastboot flash without s-off or an eng bootloader

I see you have ATT, which means you have a Vivid, so S-Off is NOT necessary for flashing ROMs. If the Vivid came with ICS, you're all set to unlock bootloader, flash custom recovery, flash boot.img, and flash ROM. If your Vivid currently has GB, you'll want to run an ICS RUU first (relock bootloader first if it is currently unlocked), then unlock, etc

i hav a confusion...is s-off necesary for flashing kernel?i want to flash holicakes kernel but i cant find if s-off is necessary for kernel

Not necessary but makes it easier. There are other options: (boot.img is usually found in the rom zip file.)
1. Fastboot boot recovery.img - command from terminal/CMD
2. Fastboot flash boot boot.img - command from terminal/CMD
3. Flashimage GUI (app is in Themes and Apps section)
Any of these options will work.

Im coming from a HTC One X, where is was needed to manually flash the boot.img though fastboot. If i understand correctly, this isn't needed anymore on the HTC One? No matter what rom or kernel I flash?

You guessed right, HTC decided that unlocking bootloader should work pretty much like on a Nexus device, so no S-OFF needed or other things like that.
Other proof here.
Yep just flash the rom or mod in recovery and that's it

Two simple questions: When do I need S-OFF and when do I know?
I want to test some of the custom roms on xda, and I have unlocked the bootloader, flashed cwm and are rooted.

You don't need S OFF to use ROMS. So long as you have CWM you can flash any ROM. But you have to flash the Boot.IMG separately as well.
E.g.
- Download your ROM
- Double click on the ZIP and take the Boot.IMG out. Just get a copy of it. Doesn't matter if it's still in the ZIP. You just need a copy of it.
- Flash the ROM
- Go back in Fastboot and flash the Boot.IMG
- To do that put the IMG in your Fastboot folder or any folder than recognises ADB (Fastboot mode)
- Open CMD and navigate to the Fastboot folder in which the boot.img is too
- Type with CMD : Fastboot flash boot boot.img
- It should say complete or OK
- Restart phone and enjoy
S OFF is mainly just for users who can't be bothered to do that. And to find out if you have S OFF you go in Fastboot mode and it will say up top if it is or not (S-ON)

you don't need S-off unless you want to change your phone's CID or downgrade the HBoot
if you don't know what these things are you don't need it.
You also don't need it to flash a kernel like the 2nd post suggested.
I've flashed about 10 different roms and not had to that with any of them. Just flash the zip in recovery. I'm new to android a few months so maybe things have changed recently?
S-off is if you want change bootloaders, cid, etc. Once you have s-off it's easy to brick your device if you're not careful. It's not needed for flashing roms though.

Ah, then I'm gonna skip S-OFF. I've flashed many roms with mye SGS3 and LGO2X, but I think maybe HTC is a little more tricky to handle.

If all you plan to do is use custom ROMs then there's no need to be S-OFF. All you'll really need is unlocked bootloader and custom recovery (TWRP or CWM).
S-off allows you to change your phone's firmware regardless of what carrier you have or model ID. So you can get the most recent firmware even if your carrier hasn't pushed out an OTA. That matters to some people but not all.
It also allows you to flash a custom hboot to remove the red text on your splash screen. This is wholly an OCD thing--there's no good reason to do it otherwise.
S-off essentially means you're taking full responsibility for your phone and can't rely on HTC's security checks to prevent bricks.
So first off I have unlocked the bootloader and rooted my HTC vivid. I'm not super familiar with htcs' and the necessity of s-off. I've read and read and understand and see the process to unroot and return to stock with rru so I'm prepared to do that if I need to but I need help answering the question of why i have flashed this rom on a previous vivid for a friend and needless to say it worked flawlessly. However not this time or I should say not the last 10+ times I've tried.. help please!=/ do I need to s-off?
And why do other roms work but not this one?
I'm trying to flash cm10 ported to holiday that I've gotten from the cm website and after installing from twrp and cwm it flashes the HTC screen for oh about 15-20secs then reboots..

cm10 or cm10.1? from cm's website ? The one linked in the cm10 forum on here?
Flash the boot.img in fastboot. boot.img is in the rom.zip
"fastboot flash boot boot.img"
Yeah I had flashed the boot image and it would go to a black screen after. Idk what the issue was but I returned it to stock and tried again it's working now.
