Is it possible to increase the memory of /datadata (apps that are saved to phone memory) coz i cant install much applications. Especially when they cant be moved to SD card(usb storage) like facebook app, adobe flash player, paladog, gt racing, etc.
Even an app is saved to usb storage, somehow there's still some amount of memory stored in phone memory (/datadata).
Gingerbread can install much, you can even move apps to phone memory upto 1.9gb+-. To save some memory on usb storage.
Is there any way? Coz i like being on ics than gingerbread. One main reason is there are a lot of tweaks in ics. And good lockscreen.
Thanks!

AFAIK, not without decreasing the performance. Now the /datadata is located in a fast NAND chip (IIRC correctly) which has 170 MB capacity. That's the one reason why Cyanogenmod etc. have better performance vs Samsung roms.
So increasing /datadata partitions capacity means that it needs to be moved back to slower, bigger capacity flashchip. And that would be like in stock Samsung rom (BML layout).
You'll probably find more info by googling BML and MTD info about the SGS.
I hope i remembered everything correctly

Hey guys i just wanna know if a custom rom for our X8 can go lighter than 80Mbs..
Example.. Froyobread is around 91Mbs.. GingerDX also.. but X10i roms can go til 72Mbs.. i just wanna know if its possible with our X8
I think it's possible but no one has built one yet..
I had 111mb free ram with stable 2.2 rom by lizypen

I am just curious.. why there are so many asking for ROMS with more free RAM? Why do you want to have always lots of free RAM?
You should be worried about how to better use your RAM than be worried about not using it.
It is really strange but I never saw something like this when people are always askin for more free RAM just to never use it.
Nothing beats Stock Rom .. however one can use task killers app to free up some ram though..
We need free ram for smoothness, anyway,i can.t. ask for more, the newer version of rom,the less ram we will have.

That is not necessary true. Less free RAM not always implies slugginesh. android is based on Linux, and Linux have a RAM administration model wich tries to always use the free RAM. Per example if you load all your aplications ans system and you have 100MB RAM free then android will try to use that memory for fetching app data, increase storage cache, etc. All this to do a smart usage of the available resources... think a little, why do you want to have extra RAM just to leave it unused?
If an application needs more RAM then android will free the necessary ammount of RAM, unloading fetch and cache data and preloaded apps.
Well it's true, but why devs has created supercharger script or let's take the juwe's script. This got to be a reason for that.

er guys.. i'm asking about the size of the ROM itself.. there's nothing about RAM here...
Well, it's easy to make a smaller ROM. Most ROMs nowadays include several extra apps (Google Apps, Keyboard, Calculator, etc...) for many user.
Just delete all Google Apps (Maps, street view, ...) and other unused apps, you will have a lighter one.
i've deleted many unused apps from the rom.. i managed to lower it to 85mbs.. x8 doesn't have much in terms of internal mem.. but i gues thats what app2sd is for.. is it recommended to store my apps in sd card instead?
Yes,i do that too.

cm9 nightly
Cm9 nightly does not solve low memory issue. You may face if you data heavy apps..you can avoid it by moving bulky apps to SD card and by regularly clearing data and cache from some of the apps so that you have enough space in /datadata

all ics roms which are using the 170mb fast partrition are suffering from this message, look on the development section there is a fix for this...
Never had the low disk problem. As far as multiple files, go into "settings > apps > all > media storage" force stop, clear data & reboot. Worked for me

Which kernel should i choose ??
i use DjangoManouche 1.5 now
i have a total of 330mb ram only
any good idea i can do
I believe you have 330 mb because the rest up to 512 mb is reserved for system apps. So you can use root explorer and go to /system/app and remove some system apps you don't use and reboot the phone. Just be careful not to touch stuff that is required for the phone to boot. And no, I don't know exactly which these apps are. But here is a tip: I always remove gallery, news and weather, all google apps, music player, stock email, navigation software if there is any, live wallpappers, file explorer (not before getting another though) and everything that's about visualization in general. These things are safe to remove.
And btw the amount of free ram is pretty much irrelevant to the phone's work because the kernel tries to utilize as much ram as possible and then it gives it away to ram requiring apps for the moment. I am just trying to say that you need not worry about free ram if the phone is working correctly. And if it's not it is most likely not because of used ram but some app is not behaving as it should and is using the CPU too much.
You should consider using a kernel that has OTF settings or a RAMhack. I recommend Etana but for some reason I love Temasek's Kernel. They both have the RAMhack option. It basically takes some of the RAM that is reserved for your GPU and makes it available for your device so you'll have more RAM for running applications etc. You shouldn't set the RAMhack too high though, 32mb/48mb should be fine. Additionally you could freeze some system apps that you don't need and use an autostart-manager in association with a task killer to kill applications and not allow them to restart themselves.

What did I just read?
Don't do what was posted, you'll most likely break everything.
System apps uses system storage not ram. Deleting those apps will not give you more ram. But more system storage maybe.
Ram is used to save the current state of opened applications. Though the reason you only have 330mb left, is cause the gpu uses it as shared memory.
A ram hack is an option, as it reduces the amount of ram that goes to the gpu. But the use of a ram hack over 48mbs will break lots of things, such as recorder, camera and instability in games.
In all honesty, there is no use for a ram hack 330mb of ram is enough.

If you use DjangoManouche you have ram profiles, another option are to use swap, the benefits, i'm not sure there are
Like a previous post said.....android are coded to use all ram except the amount needed for system to run smooth, apps you open will then be stored in ram which are the fastest "sd card lol". Next time you open its from ram. If you use many apps its useful with much ram. After reboot you start all over again. If there's a memory leak you can get issues like lagging Best solution are to choose a profile with much ram for apps and not much more than nessesary for system
Our device gets better each day thanks to our amazing devs
Use guestekrnl 1.8.1 and enable ZRam, works a charm. See my recent post in the flix123 v20s thread as well.
What are you planning to do with the free ram?

To have more free RAM means it has to take some from the normally non accessible system dedicated RAM. This way your device has less RAM for things like graphics which can worsen video playback and record performance.

The opinion free ram is wasted ram is wrong. you should realize it from daily use. its because when you have for example 70MB free and you open browser with some tabs, some game, etc. it closes other apps you dont want or it closes some of the tabs in browser and you have to load them every time you switch them. you need enough free ram to open what you want without system automatic closing other and under 100MB really isnt enough

soi curreltny made a 256 mb swap file and using v6 supercharger and everything but i didn'treally notice a difference in game performance , i can open like 5 apps but games nbot really?is it normal?
The smoothness of games depends also on the power of the cpu and gpu, which isn't the ace's strenght.
Swap helps for multitasking and keeping apps in memory longer (which reduces app loading time) but it won't make games run better or faster.
I guess little bit it help in performance of game as its usefull in load game data faster !

If your sd card is class 6 or lower, it can even slow down your games
After installing some heavy games, there's really no gaming difference. Only multi tasking has drastically improved.
I even tried out JB this afternoon using this same method and it still didn't make a gaming difference. The multi tasking is awesome though so I have no complaints.

I bought an extra one just for swap. Bought a 4GB class 4. Not risking my 8GB. It's hard on a SD with INT2EXT+ also installed. I don't know how long it'll last but once you got swap, you'll never go back.
I can play Tank Hero, switch to facebook on Opera Mini while answering to chats on WhatsApp and IMO instant messenger. Without having my game interrupted. AND run a bunch of widgets that would slow down my phone. Multi-tasking is incredible.
And the best part is, since I'm using a swap file and not partition, I can shrink or increase the swap size at will

Swap is pretty useless on mobile
And you get a dead SD card with it too, like those buy one get one free in shops

Don't generalize. It's useless to you. I bet you haven't even used it before.
My mobile is getting slow and when I checked the RAM, it is showing that it has 342MB RAM and usually it is 50MB free and by using RAM Booster, I was able to increase the free RAM. But, is there any way I can increase RAM of the mobile, as my mobile is getting very slow and sometime, I have to restart my system, and even power button doesn't work and i have to take out the battery and put it back...

In android free ram is wasted ram theory....so if things work normal...it's ok
But if the problem is getting slower and no response...then best is use greenify app and make the apps to hibernate....
It works to some extent....But then it is better to use min free manager too
Sent from my LG-P990 using xda premium
it also depends on what rom are you using, it has effect on ram usage. for example I'm using tonyp's cm10.1 and everything works well. I never check free ram as I don't have to, every app starts quickly and work smooth, even though a reboot a day is needed, but it worth it as I'm using this for more than a month now, without any flashings.

A little tip that works for me on v20l is to go to Settings, Display, Display Font & choose any Font as it will ask you to restart your fone. This way, you don't have to keep doing a battery pull lol. Not to sure what rom your using but on stock 2.3.4 - you don't get the option of a reset.

On the ICS/JB selection of the fonts from the settings does not requires the restart...it takes 2seconds after selection.
So, this is not true for ICS. Applicable for GB only(maybe Froyo too)
There is a way "to increase ram". It's called swap. A program could create a swap file on your android system. Not needed files which are "on" the ram will be copied to the swap file and deleted from the ram.
Maybe this app works for you: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=lv.n3o.swapper2
You should notice that a higher "swappiness" means, that the chance is higher for the data to be copied to the swap file. As you can see, it is something like a virtual ram expansion.
