Like many others, I'm having trouble with battery drain on DXLP9. I did the battery pull to no avail, the wakelock kept reappearing. Then I followed someone's suggestion to force stopping all of the cached process and, but unsure whether it's just placebo or not. Okay, questions:
Since the official update is non wipe, is it possible for "leftover" cached processes from GB still drains the battery in ICS? I.e. new bin, but old .conf and .tmp and got confused kinda thing. Again, is it possible?
If screen lock could cause problem, can it be eliminated by simply disabling it?
Pardon my stupid questions.
Yes there can be leftover trash from gb. Thats why it is recommended to do a factory reset before upgrading to ics. Wich will give you a clean system.
But what about the mmc erase bug? Factory reset via Settings can trigger it, am I right?
Yes it can trigger the emmc bug on ics kernels. Thats why I recommend doing the factory reset while still on GB.
yeah, wipe data/factory reset on GB BEFORE you flash the stock ICS rom and you should be good to go.

I have now flashed a firmware using odin3 for the first time. I used Kies to backup contacts, but otherwise didn't backup a thing.
Noticed soon that some of the apps I installed (spotify for instance) still had settings and such from previous install (stock JF3). I haven't noticed any considerable lag or gotten any errors, but I still wonder if I should clear cache or do a factory reset or something, because I have seen a lot of people writing about it.
So, what say ye?
Edit: Flashed from stock JF3 to XWJM9.
is better to do it
to eliminate any left over stuff from the previous ROM
it will save you alot of problem in the long run
i always wipe clean after every new ROM flash
I have heard a lot of talk about an emmc bug affecting stock Ice Cream Sandwich builds realeased by Samsung. THe general consensus seems to be that it is not safe to wipe/factory reset the stock Samsung ICS roms.
The question I have is do we know if the recent UK region ICS update (XXXLQ2) is affected by the emmc bug?
Can anyone confirm that if they factory reset after upgrading to LQ2 ICS that they bricked their phone or that it was a successfull wipe?
I can confirm that i have factory reset my phone successfullu after installing LQ2 update although my phone has problems caused by this update - random reboots, crashes to the homescreen, screen going black and buttons not responding etc. Could these problems be caused by the emmc bug?
I look forward to your replies, i know there are geniuses on this forum who can enlighten us.
We wont know if its affected until someone reports a brick.
But I would guess its still affected by the emmc bug.
As Entropy says in his PSA:
"All ICS official releases for the Samsung Galaxy Note (GT-N7000) as of late May 2012 - This includes XXLPY, ZSLPF, and DXLP9, and future kernels should be assumed affected until further notice."
So the bug is in offical releases?
SO this bug is in the official releases that you can install via kies?
Will Samsung patch this bug?
Surely they must be aware of it since the number of bricks going to the service centers must be rising astronomically. If we are aware of it how can they not be when they have tested many devices at factory?
Better hold on to gb then rushing to ics with emmc bug. Wait for awhile until some one found a solution. Or else you will stuck like me with no gb backup to revert back.

This is a XXLQ2 Brick I Guess.
Lol thats a total facepalm. But whats the cause of his brick? I couldnt read it all cause I laughed so hard that I got tears in my eyes.

No, that brick was not caused by the LQ2 kernel; it happened because the guy had used an ancient updater script for his Rom.

Yeah thats exactly what I thought. As I said, couldnt read it all.
Contrary to beliefs I have had no issues on my Indian ROM ICS.
I believe it may have something more to do with custom kernels, etc rather than Stock firmware?
I too have the LQ2 update and would also like to know if this is also affected by the brickbug i have not done a factory reset and currently have no issues with my phone. I do not intend on doing a factory reset until i know that Samsung have fixed the issue.
Well, you might aswell count on beeing affected. But if you dont need to factory reset then everytging is fine.

Cheers just hope i don't need to factory reset before a fix is sorted. Don't really want to go about changing roms as i like tw and like to keep my phones standard.

Run the "GotBrickBug" app by Chainfire under the Themes/Apps section and see what firmware you have.
More than likely the LQ2 ROM still has the faulty MMC_CAP_ERASE code because Samsung hasn't admitted to the problem at all yet.

I initially update by Kies to LQ2 and had random homescreen force close, black screen, green dots on the screen, apps freezing...etc. Done a factory reset, then downgraded to GB UK, factory reset again, downloaded the LQ2 Firmware via Check FUS PC version and flashed ICS LQ2 using ODIN PC and everything is running smooth. No bugs to report after more than 1 week.

I'm afraid this is not correct! Its a bug in stock ICS kernels (or other ICS based kernels that are not specifically modified) that enable the eMMC erase command.
Some custom ICS based kernels now have this command disabled. But as for now, it is considered unsafe to flash or specifically full (data) wipe from any stock ICS ROM (some ICS ROMs do a full wipe when flashed!). It is still statistically a rare event, but the only way to be 100% sure safe is to flash from a GB based kernel, such as Abyss 4.2 kernel.
Samsung is working on a "fix" for the faulty firmware in the emmc chips but what this fix will be is unknown.
It has been reported that, unrooted, on a Stock ICS ROMS (and hence stock kernel) has super-bricked after doing a factory reset.
You may be able to do a full wipe/reset/custom ICS kernel ROM and not suffer any immediate ill effects but the bug can manifest itself at a later date.
If you really want to get the bug, the best way would be to fill up your internal memory, then do a factory wipe, rinse and repeat!
GB kernels don't use the erase command, so are totally safe.
So to summarise, it is not safe to factory reset on LQ2 UK rom! Samsung have not yet issued a fix!
EDIT: Wow, its even more complicated than above lol!
See here for updates and the first sign of a fix!

Greetings,
Initially I wanted to post at the kernel release thread, but due to lack of 10 posts yet ( im still new ), I cant.
So my questions is easy, just need to be clarified.
1)I already flashed the kernel, it appear in the 'About phone' section. but i did not see any effect on the battery yet. Do i need to wipe anything first? Or the features of this kernel are already activated when successfully flashed?
2)If going to wipe, is this going to disturb emmc? I know MMC_CAP_ERASE is disabled, but i did not know the effect of wiping on this kernel yet.
Thanks a lot. Especially to Hardcore.
It could be, that you overestimated the effect of having good kernel on battery, the main battery eaters, when the device is used are screen, comm/sync functions, and active apps. So, I would not recommend wiping, unless you have some malfunctioning apps. Instead, check two threads: one by Entropy512 on battery drainers (I may try to find the link latter) and betterbatterystats thread. Armed with knowledge from there, you will be able to lower you battery consumption.
And, btw, this all does not mean that there's anything wrong with speedmod kernel, it's probably one of the best for stock ROMs.
IF you like me dont beleive the 3rd party programmers that the MMC_CAP_EREASE disabled that solve the bircking issue, you could flash abyss 4.2 then run jbdroid script (it is deleting the old kernel files wipe cache and dalvik cache) and then install the speedmod.
I simply can't beleive that mmc_cap_erase disable could solve the bricking issue until Sammy told us and they come out a solution.
sounds interesting. can s.o. confirm this?
I thought wiping cache/dalvik cache did not have any risk of bricking as long as you don't do a full wipe and/or restore of sw-bckp.
Running Speedmod K3-6
Hi,
I've just upgraded to K3-6 and currently on Kingdroid Notemania v 4.2.
Can't help but noticed that my Note gets heated up pretty easily. Plus, the battery can drop from 100% to 88% just by browsing through my Facebook and Whatsapping for less than half an hour. Previously when I'm on stock ICS running speedmod K3-3, my battery took about 10 minutes of browsing before dropping a single percent.
Any thoughts on this?
Tim
I have an international unrooted Galaxy Note. During Gingerbread it was stable. Since the ICS update it is very unstable. Battery drain. Sometimes no deep sleep. Self reboots. App crashes.
I had not performed a factory resets before upgrading.
I read in forums that those steps could help
a) getting the battery out for 10 seconds
b) removing unnecessary apps (that might be a problem)
c) moving all apps to internal memory
This actually did help. The Note was more stable. Hardly any self reboots anymore. Mostly it did deep sleep.
Yesterday I did install Android 4.0.4 and hoped that the problem would be gone forever.
BUT – the self restart problem with my Galaxy Note under Android 4.0.4 is worse than ever. I had about hourly self restarts yesterday. I will test again today but I am very unsatisfied.
I am coming from an iPhone and still like the form factor of the Galaxy Note. I also like that you can customize so much. Most Apps that I want to use are available for Android. Some Apps are even better. Some UI details are definitely better.
But the instability of Android on my Note is driving me crazy. This is not acceptable. A real turn off for anybody used the stability that iOS provides.
Besides my rant. Does anybody have the same problems? What are solutions.
I am reluctant to perform a factory reset. I am not aware how to backup Apps, screen layout and picture data. Unhappy ex iOS now Android user.

It doesn't sound like normal behaviour, You can have a search through the forum here and a few people have had similar issues, some caused by apps / launchers (APEX & auto Wi-Fi from memory)..
In any case, As a test I would suggest a complete clean install, these are steps I just completed last night as I wanted a fresh system.
Basically;
- Backup data from Internal and External SD - Connect to your PC and just drag and drop the folders from internal and External SD to your PC
- Go back to GB using PC ODIN - Once on GB you are safe from the Brickbug..
- Wipe and Factory Reset (ONLY WHEN ON GB!!
- Format Internal and External SD cards through settings ONLY WHEN ON GB!!
- Flash 4.0.4 / ROM of choice...
WARNING: NEVER WIPE / FACTORY RESET / FORMAT ON ANY ICS STOCK KERNEL

EDIT: - Or return the device to the SSC if you have warranty..

Flash gingerbread rom in pc odin
Now your in gingerbread rom. Go to CWM recovery, do the wiping data, cache and dalvik(do not reboot yet)after these take out your battery for one minute, put the battery back, then directly go to download mode and flash ics rom for clean install. It will solve your battery problem and fc.
Thanks for all you tips. I am getting shivers when I think about having to root …*but, I just uninstalled AutoWIFI. Thinking about, it this could very well be the problem. I also have ADW EX Launcher running. This will be the next App to remove. I will try this first and see how it behaves. gfisch

Sorry for that CWM recovery, just use stock recovery of gingerbread rom its ok, wipe data and cache. No need to root.
Apps on sd card cause reboots
Hello there, I was having the exact same problems as you. Random reboots sometimes 1 - 3 times a day. I found that the solution to my problem lies in the move apps to sd functionality of android. It is an actual issue with android (#25563). The os keeps rebooting when apps are installed on the sd card. I discovered this here: code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=25563
Since moving all of my apps to internal memory the problem has disappeared, my battery is flat lining when idle (1 -2% drain every 2 hours) my phone is also much more responsive.
You may want to check that there are no apps installed on your sd card (the internal sd called usb storage)
EDIT: AutoWIFI could also cause the reboot problems. I had the same issue with Juice Defender causing reboots.
Im also running 4.0.4 ics and i have had restarts from being on GB. It was very bad in the start but soon as i updated to the ics one before this it got abit worst. Now im on 4.4 it still happends. now it happenss when im in apps mostly . wot can i do???

I think you ought to do a clean install (flash) an ICS rom of your own choice. By that, I mean for you to do wipe/factory reset, clear cache and Dalvik cache. The important thing here is to do it correctly.
To flash a rom, you need to be in CWM mode. The next thing to do is to flash Abyss and then reboot recovery! After this you are good to flash any ICS rom.
YOU MUST ONLY DO THE WIPE AFTER YOU HAVE REBOOTED THE RECOVERY!
There is no need to mess around with moving apps to external sd card, not at this stage anyway. Hopefully, with the clean system, your problem would go away.
Hope this would offer some help.
help with apps
I'm having some issues about some apps of instant messaging on my galaxy N7000. the apps i'm talking about are whatsapp kakao talk messenger viber and chatOn. after downloading and configuring the apps theybseems to work but in a while they are automatically removed from the phone and on the status bar the following message is displayed " whats app has been removed" even if i don't uninstall it. it happens all the times. i tried to contatt the apps developer, the google play customer service and samsung customer service but noone give me an answer. i took some logs about the installing and uninstalling process of the apps and i wanna know if someone could read that for me instead of finding a solution. i can't attach any file yet but i can send it by mail to those who wants to.leave his email address even in a pm. thank you for anyone can help. sorry in advanced if this is not the right place to edit this thread
I opened another thread about this issues but i suppose this could be a more appropriate section.
Hope i'm not messing aroud

Thanx for The reply. I've now been rooted but still on stock rom ics 4.0.4 but I still get those hangs time to time when I'm doing to many thins at once. Until I find a rom that's stable ill stay on stock lol the threads about peoples phones seems like a nightmare.
Can your steps still be done? Newbie so I don't understand hardly anything. I'm on speedmod kernal.

Ok, I'm sort of a year late, but recently, I've been having the same issue as well. S oi've got a safe kernel, and wiped/factory reset the pone.
now I lost all my apps, and th eproblem still exists. Any chance its a hardware problem?
Install another Kernel !!
I suggest you to install a new kernel, Franco.kernel or HydraCore Kernel

Hi All,
I had made couple of changes to my lg optimus 2x p990, when i had rooted it long back.
some of the changes are related to : CPU clock speed , RAM optimisation and couple more i don't remember all of them.
and later i had flashed original stock rom. this stock rom is creating issues now and i am not sure those settings still holds good for the stock rom. whether settings get reset or still stays intact in stock rom also.
my concern is :
can i set all the cpu ram and other settings to its factory default. i know, i should not play with processor and
ram capabilities. but to check i did and now facing some issues like. backlight wont turn off sometimes.
battery runs out very fast.display comes back after screen locked.
i am not new to this root , flash or recovery and i understand this concern well before posting in forum.
does, flashing stock rom will reset everything or do we have any tool which can bring back the entire mobile to very new state. the state to which factory reset
thanks forum contributors. we live with technology which sometime demands better knowledge. hence asking all your help to get this rectified.
in TWRP, delete user data partition 1.5 GB one. it'll reset all customized settings. flashing stock ROM will also do it for you
Do a full wipe via recovery or even write the bootloader and recovery anew and repartition via option 4 in the awesome AIO toolkit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2020737
will try today
