Radios, Mainversions & RUU's? - HTC Incredible S

Can someone please explain clearly about radios, mainvers & Ruu's. I'm about to flash the latest radio that came with the Chinese OTA, I'm worried that if I flash it I will brick my device. Also if I flash this radio successfuly would I still be able to return to stock, because the RUU in footballs thread is a GB ruu. And wats the thing with mainvers and bricking your phone?

Don't know if you got your answers and I don't know enough myself to tell you everything...
I can tell you I flashed the latest radio but preferred the 29m radio and had no probs going back.

Certain radios are made for certain Android versions. So certain ones are for Froyo, and some for GB. If you on a GB rom and you flash a Froyo rom, i believe you brick your device.
However, the latest radio released is GB/ICS so you are able to change radios as and when you wish.

Radios are the low-level interface the Android kernel uses to communicate with your chips (mobile, wifi, FM). Upgrading a radio usually adds functionality, or increases the quality of a phonecall, but they can also break calling and texting etc. if they're incompatible with the Android version. In the Android development section, there's a thread with the latests radios, and which version is suggested for which rom

Study the thread in the Development section and although it is not up to date, you will see how the RUU file names usually contain the radio version, so you can get a feel for what radios were introduced with the different Android verision such as Froyo, GB, ICS.
As pointed out in the posts on this thread, once you have flashed a GB radio, you cannot go back and flash a Froyo radio or you will brick your phone.

And does the maiver get updated if you flash a radio?
EDIT: Is this radio old 3805.06.03.03

If you flash a radio by using a PG32IMG.zip file and letting HBOOT update it, yes it will also update the mainver.
If you have S-OFF this is not a big deal. You can edit the mainver value in the PG32IMG.zip file before you copy it to your SD card.

Thank you for everything. U can now close thread

Newest radio/spl for sprint cdma hero

To start off, I'm not new to android just not that knowledgeable in the hero arena.
That being said, I know someone with a rooted sprint hero that hasn't been updated in quite some time as far as prl/radio/spl.
I was wondering if anyone could inform me of a good radio/spl combo. I have read a lot but don't know what is compatible with what here. I understand to flash to a sense rom and check for updates for the prl. I assume u do that first then flash to a rom of your choice, if u chose to, then flash the radio before the spl. Or is there a way to unroot to stock 2.1 to get new spl/radio/prl, then re root and just find a rom? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

no need to unroot, I would find the flashable sprint radio ends in 10.29 (search), then flash any sprint or sense rom (search) and update profile/prl, then find the eng-spl that darchstar put up and install it - if that's what you meant by spl. Good luck

Thanks for the fast reply bro. The eng spl was the only one I saw but was unsure if it was compatible with any radio as it doesn't work that way in the g1 my touch world. If they aren't compatible u end up with a shiny paperweight.
I can find those with no prob and am aware of what roms are out there and what I think I might try. I guess I'll get to work on it.
I assume I should do the updates in that order? Appreciate your feedback.

[Q] OTA 2.3.3 update

I have been waiting since I heard Google was sending on the gingerbread update to the nexus one's. However I still haven't received mine yet nor update 2.2.2.
Under settings /about phone:-

Any ideas? I have tried manually updating but didn't work for me.

FRG38D aint it?
You're not running stock Google ROM. You're most probably running Vodafone modified firmware. In that case, you won't ever get Google OTA, you'll get Vodafone's - which isn't released yet, and who knows when will it be.
To install Gingerbread, you need to revert your phone to stock Google version. Read the Wiki and see, how. Look for "unroot/restore" guide.
You can also just root your phone and install one of the lightly modified stock GB ROMs (like Geo411's) from Development forum.

Discuss Upgrading Raider (Bell/Rogers) to ICS

After reading for the last 2 days, I am still unsure of exactly how to upgrade my Raider (Canadian) to ICS. There are probably others trying to work out the same. So, to avoid the problem of having noobish questions asked repeatedly in multiple other threads, I have created this thread. If the thread is active, I will try to keep the first couple posts updated to minimize the need to read through multiple pages!
If you are a Dev or experienced, knowledgeable user, I'm sure you see the benefit to answering once in a proper thread.
My thoughts so far:
1. Back everything up and fully charge your device.
2. Have a plan for what you will do if this fails and you brick your device.
2. Unlock your bootloader and Root your device. Link To Slapshot30's Superguide
4. Turn off security on your device (S-OFF) Link to Juopunutbear S-OFF Thread
5. Change your carrier id to "SuperCID" jmone's post on checking and changing your CID
6. Relock your bootloader.
7. This is the step I am unsure of... People seem to use some terms interchangeably, but I'm not sure it is reliable. For example, HBOOT, boot.img and kernal. I think the first two are synonymous but I'm not sure kernal is the same? Since there is no Bell or Rogers ICS, we are going to use another carrier's stock, or more likely, a custom ROM. I have read that you need to replace the HBOOT (boot.img?) with one that is a match for the ROM you wish to install. I think a match generally will be found by (ideally) using the HBOOT recommended by the ROM dev, or secondarily, using the HBOOT for the same carrier and same OS (eg if a rom is based on AT&T 2.3.7, then using the HBOOT extracted from the stock AT&T GB 2.3.7 RUU would work). So, we need to clarify the steps here for HBOOT/boot.img (and kernal?)
8. Install ICS ROM!

Noobs, etc: Ask away and as we get answers I will add them to the FAQ post.
For those that have been successful in applying ICS to their Canadian Raider, please provide precise, detailed explanation of how you did it!
DEV's & other experts, your input would be appreciated. In return, you'll minimize pages of unwanted posts elsewhere!

Okay to start off I have a Bell raider with S-OFF and running Dark Raider 1.2 with the KozmiKKernel Beta 5.
Follow this handy guide made by mohamed_moscow: (word for word)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1612685
Once you get to the last step you can flash any custom rom and kernel!
Almost glad that I haven't been checking XDA in a while only to come back and see the s-off is working now. Awesome.
After updating my Bell Raider to ICS, I noticed nothing bad except one thing : when I'm in call, the other person I'm talking to is complaining about some feedback thru my phone. They say they hear themselves.
Anyone has the same issue?

My guess is this will get resolved once Rogers releases their ICS OTA/RUU and we have a proper Rogers radio.img.

Which brings the next question....when rogers when????
Sent from my HTC-X710a using XDA
I just updated the superguide and it should work for all carriers. The basis of it for carriers other than AT&T is....
lock bootloader
run GB RUU for whichever carrier
unlock bootloader
S OFF
flash wcx recovery
update to international ICS hboot
flash wcx recovery
flash custom kernel + ROM
If the radio really is the issue, since bell and rogers share identical protocols and frequencies you will be able to use the bell radio. Bell has announced released in june, so if rogers doesn't parallel back you can get s-off and then just apply the new bell radio.

Well I have the att vivid using red pocket. This is what I did. When I got phone it was already running ics.

You can stop right there if your using att vivid. But I continued and
S-off

Pretty simple as the superguide wasn't updated when I did it but I just read up before installing anything. Took me an hour to do everything now I have a awesome phone that I traded for a skyrocket for. No regrets

I started off with the Rogers HTC Holiday and in a span of a day I managed to complete the entire unlock procedure thanks to SUPERGUIDE and the thread on ICS HBoot update. I'm running DarkRaider 1.4 on a Rogers Raider. I followed the steps for the S-OFF you linked in your post, then flashed WCX recovery via the Vivid AIO tool (check the Dev forum, it's stickied). After that, I just flashed the ROM via recovery, no problems.
Other than a few ROM specific bugs, I haven't had a problem. I'm still waiting for Visual Voicemail to work though.

[Q] What is a Custom Radio and what should I flash?

Hello Fellow HTC IncS Users,
I have a Query and a couple of "sub" queries at that.
I am a total noob when it comes to flashing custom RADIOS, so i was wondering if somebody could help me and give me a step-by-step guide on how to do so. Also,
- Can you tell me the benefits/disadvantages of flashing a custom radio?
- Can you tell me what radio to flash for the Stock ICS Rom  ? (Android 4.0.4 + Sense 3.6 WWE) (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1773520)
- Please do not remind me of the risks involved. (I will not hold you responsible for a bricked device, however do reply with some knowledge.)
Thanks in Advance, and also, does Custom Radios unlock my network? (Can I be GSM Free)?
Thank You,
Piccilino

With radios, generally I like to flash the latest and forget about it. There is not much of a difference with different radios, they impact greatly on battery life, performance, reception, data speed etc
You need to be S-Off
Latest radio in my sig, uploaded by nonverbose
Simply place zip on root of sdcard and boot into bootloader, it will get autodetected and you will be prompted for confirmation after a few seconds. Delete the zip after installation
Hey,
Thanks for the advice, but what radio should I flash? Also, what is the ratio of bricking my phone?

So what radio does? I read somewhere that radios can potentially network unlock.

With a good radio for your phone/region/carrier:
Better reception
Sometimes call quality
better battery
And vice versa for disadvantages when using a bad radio
Since you're in Melbourne and on Optus, I recommmend either the .11M radio from the virtuous leak/official ruu or the .28M one from the optus ICS OTA

HTC noob questions

Ok guys, first of all let me say that I've searched a lot, read many information, and now I'm confused regarding some subjects. I came from a Galaxy Nexus, and this is ALL new and a little bit confusing... And before I do something wrong let me ask!
To clarify, can someone answer this questions as simple as possible? Thanks!
1. What's hboot?
2. To update to a new one will I need to have a matching Cid / be s-off?
3. What's the difference between hboot and boot?
3.1. If I flash hboot to boot by mistake, is it possible to recover it?
4. What's a RUU?
5. What are RU's? (maybe testers? What does the RU stand for?)
6. How can I know if some radio is compatible with my country's? I live in Portugal.
