[Q] What is a Custom Radio and what should I flash? - HTC Incredible S

Hello Fellow HTC IncS Users,
I have a Query and a couple of "sub" queries at that.
I am a total noob when it comes to flashing custom RADIOS, so i was wondering if somebody could help me and give me a step-by-step guide on how to do so. Also,
- Can you tell me the benefits/disadvantages of flashing a custom radio?
- Can you tell me what radio to flash for the Stock ICS Rom  ? (Android 4.0.4 + Sense 3.6 WWE) (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1773520)
- Please do not remind me of the risks involved. (I will not hold you responsible for a bricked device, however do reply with some knowledge.)
Thanks in Advance, and also, does Custom Radios unlock my network? (Can I be GSM Free)?
Thank You,
Piccilino

With radios, generally I like to flash the latest and forget about it. There is not much of a difference with different radios, they impact greatly on battery life, performance, reception, data speed etc

You need to be S-Off
Latest radio in my sig, uploaded by nonverbose
Simply place zip on root of sdcard and boot into bootloader, it will get autodetected and you will be prompted for confirmation after a few seconds. Delete the zip after installation

Hey,
Thanks for the advice, but what radio should I flash? Also, what is the ratio of bricking my phone?
Sent from my HTC Incredible S

Oh thanks, but is this safe?

Also, for some reason I cannot visit d-host. Can u post a mirror? Much appreciated. And does installing a custom radio wipe my phone?

Dev host is down
Just wait for it, I'd rather download a trusted one than a dodgy one because the chance of bricking with a wrong radio is high.
Sent from my Nexus 7

So are u saying that nonverbose's radio is dodgy? If it is, which one do u suggest?
Sent from my HTC Incredible S

YAY!
Thanks to nonverbose for giving me the radio.. Worked like a charm
I just want to know, (Because I do not have another sim)
Does this network unlock??
THANKS SO MUCH!
Piccilino

No

So what radio does? I read somewhere that radios can potentially network unlock.

Not sure where you read that or got that idea, but that is not the case with the IncS.

Well i thought because you know, it controls all the outgoing calls etc. Just some common sense.
This is not true though...
Anyway, can u guys tell me what are EVERY SINGLE benefit/disadvantage of flashing a radio? I flashed the one that eRadicant suggested, and it works good..
(By working good i mean that it did not brick my device )
Ty.

With a good radio for your phone/region/carrier:
Better reception
Sometimes call quality
better battery
And vice versa for disadvantages when using a bad radio
Since you're in Melbourne and on Optus, I recommmend either the .11M radio from the virtuous leak/official ruu or the .28M one from the optus ICS OTA

Yea i got the ics one and then changed to the .11m one. I realised that my wifi/bluetooth was faster and my reception was better

AT&T Nexus One and custom roms

I've been hesitant to try my hand at flashing ROMs because I'm in Australia using an AT&T variant N1, my carrier uses 850Mhz as the 3G frequency (Telstra) which is same as AT&T.
I've read up on the general flashing instructions for cyanogen and feel comfortable to proceed (I have basic linux knowledge as well), but only sticking point is I'm a bit unclear as to whether there is any difference for me, being the 850 variant.
My best guess is that its the same process, same files/build etc., just don't flash the radio? Is that correct? Can someone whose done it on AT&T variant confirm? THat would be really really good
I'm going to follow the instructions here, on a side note, is amon or clockwork the better option?
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Nexus_One:_Full_Update_Guide
There is absolutely no difference for you.
Radio frequencies aren't dependent on baseband (radio) build, they're a function of HW. You can flash everything, radios included.
Read the Wiki.
Yep, go right ahead and do whatever you want.
I've hacked mine to hell and back with no issues
ROMs, no, no difference. Basebands and radios are a bit of a different story, though...

They aren't in Nexus, and they are exactly the same thing generally. Baseband = radio = SW that runs on baseband CPU.
OK thanks all
do I NEED to flash the radio i.e. can I get away with not updating the radio component? Just super cautious as I don't want to be in the hunt for a replacement in case of bricking, with all the dual cores just round the corner as wlel

If your radio is 4.06 or above, you don't need to flash it. If not - you do.
I'm on an att n1 on rogers and I've flashed everything from roms to radios and never had a problem that a lil nandroid couldn't fix.

Korean radio is fine. 5.08 was present on all the current Nexus One replacement phones, and 5.12 is present on Vodafone ones.
Any specific reason why you're avoiding it?

It's called the Korean one because it first came about in a KT OTA. It's fine to use on any N1.
You don't have to worry at all about flashing radios. All the frequencies work with all radios. Note that you need at least 5.08 radio on cyanogen to be able to use the 720p video camera.

[Q] Incredible S latest ROM, Sense

Hi all,
I have Incredible S, all from the factory (software, Sense..etc)
I would like to know step by step how to :
1- Install a new ROM.
2- Having the news HTC Sense 3.5 on it and also if that have any negatives or if something might not work.
3- The latest ROM I can install.
4- Any additional info you think I should know as I am new to Android and HTC world.
Thank you,
Michel
The best bit of advice I can give you is search, search, search! All the info you need dude has already been asked and answered so hit that search button and spend a bit of time finding it out for yourself. Best place to start is the development forum where you can learn and download many different ROMs and find out which is the best one for you. Good luck...and welcome!
yep, you are right,
but sometimes when you are totally new to something you need some help at least with knowing the name of the best ROM as I've found many of them with different issues.

Go read the sticky threads in the Dev section. You have some work ahead of you before you can flash a custom Rom.
Yes, I went, and all is ready, my PC and my mobile,
the only thing I need is a ROM which doesn't have problems and won't effect my device plus a new version of Sense.

Ok, then nandroid backup and start flashing Roms then. Only you will be able to determine which Rom will fit your criteria. What you may think is a 'problem' on one Rom may not be that big of deal to someone else, so just start trying them yourself.
Problems like WiFi, Camera, SD Card, Backlight, Bluetooth.. all these are problems which I think might be issue for all users .
only a starting name would be enough to me

I would agree totally with all of those which is why I personally have not even tried any of the Sense 3.0 Roms. IMHO the current GB 2.3.3 Rom with Sense 2.1 runs just fine on my IncS so I won't be able to offer you any suggestions.
Revolution HD has no known issues download that and stop complaining. There is no "best ROM" try them all, the only thing you have to lose is bandwidth and time.
I use Newt pyramid beta 3 sense 3.0 gb 2.3.4 its stable, crazy fast, as current as you can get, and if you check the last of the comments almost all of the bugs have been fixed.

I find the 20.2810 one has great signal

yeah it's the newest. I think it works perfectly and has the best signal of all the radios I've tried
Right, I might have to look into that, just hopes it improves things for me.
I'm still considering returning the phone though due to the signal drop outs, I'm a bit reluctant to root or do anything that'll stop me from being able to return it. Can I take it that running an RUU will put everything back to stock, including radio and S Off?
Yes. If you root using AlpaharevX and not a permanent root using a gold card then flashing a stock RUU will bring you back to S-on. Give it a go, I did, happy so far and have the stock RUU downloaded and ready to go if need be.
I don't think I need a Gold Card with it being a sim free unit? So it should be just a case of following this guide http://is.gd/5wKZRZ and then flashing a different radio?
If I don't like the results then I should be able to run an RUU to get me back to stock?

How to revert back to HTC Sense for Incredible S ?

I know your pain my friend as I am a fan of Sense, but fear not! There are a number of ROMs using both Sense 3.0 and Sense 3.5 out there at the moment all located in the development section, or nicely packaged in one place here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136463. You would install these the same way you installed CyanogenMod. I am currently running Nikhil - TriNity Sense 3.5 which is currently in the process of being updated, so you may want to wait for that if you fancy giving 3.5 a go, if not then Virtuous Unity is also very good, although again expecting an update. Bslim's ROM is also sporting 3.5 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1265980
If you want to go back to your original stock ROM and did not do a Nandroid backup of it before flashing Cyanogen, then you can download the stock RUU that relates to your version of android and the radio you currently have. Look at your phone info if your are unsure of this. You then download it to your sd card and flash it the same way as all the others. If you did do a backup just restore this and hay presto!
Hope this helps.
Hello VaderXI,
Thanks a lot for replying...
I had done a backup of sense prior flashing cyanogenmod. But while trying to restore from revolutionary, its says md5sum mismatch. Not sure what happened.
I'm planning to use the ROM at 'http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1275609' but the problem is its in Arabic. I hope i can change it when the phone is booted up and it asks for the settings.
How can I get the radio version from my phone ? IIRC, mine was using android 2.3.3 which was the latest version for HTC Incredible S. Why does the available Incredible S roms show up as .exe files ? Are these flashed as the same way as other ROMs ?
To be frank, I'm having trouble detecting the rom versions from the list in 'http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033922'. How can i find something for android 2.3.3 Incredible S which i bought in India.
If the ROM you are using is in english, can you please send me the link for that please.

Cant help with the md5sum mismatch I'm afraid. Did you wipe all your data before flashing i.e. cache and dalvik cache ect?
The ROM u want to use is available in English, like u said just select it in when u first reboot.
U can find ur radio version under settings-about phone-software info-more-baseband version. Match this with the RUU in the thread and ur sorted...it will obviously be a gingerbread version. Yes they are flashed the same way as other ROMS.
All the ROMs are available in English. If they say "full Arabic", that's because Arabic is not always available on ROMs and the developer wants you to know that it is in theirs. The ROM i am currently using is this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1301785, but it is currently being updated and the download is not available.
All the best.

Not to make yourself the smart person here.
Ok, you are right, I will stuck somewhere but that's how we learn...when no one anwers us with real "answer".
dont think super cid is really very useful on cdma phones...
I'm not trying to be the smart person here, I am trying to help you. With super CID you can flash any carriers Rom or RUU, however with Sprint being a coma phone we are very limited so as far as I know having super cid is kind of pointless. Unless someone else knows better.

This is correct. If you read the info in the CID unlock thread it explains everything.
Super CID does allow you to use any RUU, but that doesn't help us as much because Sprint is CDMA, the rest of the varients are currently GSM. However, when the phone becomes available on other CDMA carriers like Boost or Verizon it will be more useful because those will work since they are CDMA as well.

1. Not directly, you'd have to Port them.
2. You need to flash the Sprint TWRP, use either 2.5.0 or 2.6.1. The 2.6.0 version that is floating around is broken.
As far as good tons, I personally havent flashed any because stock, with a different launcher, has worked so well. I read through a lot of the AOSP based Rom threads and there seem to be some issues that need to get worked out before I would consider them strong contenders to the stock stability and features. However any stock roms should give good results, is recommend Viper Rom.

Give the guy a break; the Super CID is confusing to us Sprint users. Even the guy who posted the Super CID didnt realize till later that it wouldnt do us much good. If it isn't clear to you already, DONT FLASH ANY ROM THAT ISNT SPECIFICALLY BUILT FOR THE SPRINT VARIANT. And dont bother with super CID, even if/when boost and other prepaid options become available, I will have a hard time believing that development will skyrocket because of it. I have been working on three different roms for our beloved sprint variant and have dismal failures for going on three weeks. Couldnt figure out why everybody loved stock so much here, but I think I know now.
Thank you guys, now everything is clear for me :silly:
I am going to use my phone in Europe and in my country we use only GSM, we don't use CDMA at all.
Now I am using this rom: 42ONE - The Aftermath
Really Like it and recomend it.
i've tried with viper but more like this one.
