Hi all. Yes I am a Noob first ever post in fact. I am however good at following directions and reading first. So far found nothing to address my issue.
Intro: First time flashing a Custom ROM although I did previously successfully install Cf-Root and Stock ICS from Sam Mobile using excellent instructions found here.
Background: 1) Decided to move from Rooted Stock ICS to new Aliance ICS -- spent all weekend reading up before developing courage to attempt. 2) Today Successfully downgraded to Gingerbread (Flashing the Darky Resurrection rom and following instructions exactly). 3) Uninstalled DarkyOTA and Cleared app data as specified in instruction 4) Installed Alliance OTA and ROM Config as specified 3) Successfully flashed a XXLPY repack via ODIN per http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27199210&postcount=4instructions 5) Copied the Alliance ICS Rom Zip to external SD 6) Went into CWM as instructed and flashed file.
Result: received notices -- Preparing for Installation ... Cleaning the phone etc -- through to "Installing Extra Apps" ----- Have been staring at this part for 45 minutes now as no progress has been made.
Current situation: Staring dumbly at phone with fading hopes that the process will complete. Wondering how long my Mugen battery will hold out while I wait. Utterly clueless what to do next. Regretting my courage in attempting this.
Can someone help please?
Where did u come up with DARKY ICS it should be Alliance ICS, just recheck because DARKY ICS is for S2 did u flash S2 rom on Note......

You make a very good point --- but i can confirm that the zip was the following:\AllianceROM_N7000_ICS-v1.zip
Still hung (80 minutes now) on "Installing extra apps"

Download the Alliance rom again and reflash it, you might have a corrupted rom.

Thank you ---- I will try --- but first how do I get out of this hung install --- no button works --- if I just power down or pull the battery out before this flash has finished , will my phone still be usable?

Haven`t you made a cwm recovery (backup) before you went to flash the rom.
If so pull the battery, wait 30 seconds, insert the battery and go in recoverymode and restore your backup. If there is no backup go in downloadmode and reflash a stock rom and reroot this rom and start over.

Ok -- and thanks again. The Good News is after pulling and reinserting the battery the phone booted up and into Alliance (it looks fantastic by the way) and appears to be working. A bit scary as the Flash process itself never actually completed. Since I am as of yet unfamiliar with the ROM I have no idea if I am missing anything (mostly just the wall paper and google search, play store, and Nova settings are displayed --- but app drawer has 49 apps and 36 widgets). So now I would be very interested in opinions as to ---
1) Anyway to validate whether EVERYTHING that was supposed to have flashed on this Rom is in fact there? Or can I assume that since the phone has booted up and is working in terms of voice and data connections that I have been lucky and all has gone well after the initial panic?
2) Related to the above should I reflash this ROM over itself to see if it fully completes this time?
Thank you again.
Congrats on getting past the hanging issue - it is always a nervous time when that happens. I would recommend you reboot the phone and check that it starts up again. If all is good, run with current system for a few days. If you start to notice anything wacky then would be the time to reflash ROM.
I'm a firm believer in "If it ain't broke don't fix it" Hopefully your Note will just work now.
Just before reflashing just confirm if you are fully rooted, install root explorer and check if u can paste in system if yes then for safety purposes just flash abyss 4.2 redpill kernel boot into the kernels cwm and perform wipe and reinstall the rom

Thank you for the feedback. As it stands I Re-flashed again ---- and the flash hung again (this time @ "Cleaning phone". Started over a 3rd time and it went through perfectly.
No idea why the first two attempts failed -- but it looks like I am good to go.

Thank you for the suggestion. Per my post above, I think I am sorted out now.
I've got the same problem, are you on speedmod kernel???
Try to mount system and data from the mount menu.
I hope this can help you
I have the same problem... First I installed successfully the ROM but then i messed up something and my phone started to restart and then I went to recovery, Wiped Cache, Dalvik and then Wiped data, then i mount Data, started installing and it went to Installing extra apps and just froze... I hold the power button and it booted alliance rom only with nova launcher... No other launchers... I want to do this again but im afraid if it is going to get even worse Should I try again of doing this? I'm sure that the rom wasn't corrupted because the first time it worked... Shall i try flashing HydraCore and then flash alliance rom again?
EDIT: I've just flashed it again and it worked.. I have no idea what exactly happend, but it doesn't matter - it worked

So I just got back my nexus one from htc, got my mother board changed and preloaded with 2.2. I rooted it with universal root without unlocking my bootloader.
Problem: when I reboot after successfully loading CM6 and have it running, it reboots to the "X" and hangs.
Am I doing something wrong?
For how long is it hanging? I recall having to wait what seemed like forever the first time I booted with CM6... but eventually it 'took'.

You have a locked bootloader as well right? I waited a good 30 mins. Maybe i should leave i and give it more time to boot?
All works normally on inital boot of CM6 after install with locked bootloader, just that when i try to reboot the first time manually... it stays at the "X" for an awefully long time.
Did you wipe?
Try wiping data,cache,dalvik-cache.
ya, this is what i did.
1) Universal root with locked biootloader on stock 2.2
2) installed rom manger
3) flashed recovery + downloaded and flashed CM6 + google apps
Boots up fine, runs CM6 flawless. Upon manual reboot, it hangs on the X
Then i tried:
1) reboot into recovery
2) full wipe + davlick cache
3) reinstall CM6 + google apps
Still hangs. I haven't had time to play with it, but ill try to leave it along upon reboot a lil longer to see if it pulls thu~
Please let me know whether after installing the 6.0 cyn. rom and after the initial install you can then reboot and it pulls up and runs as usual. I am getting ready to flash the cyn 6.0 rom I am on stock 2.2 and have never flashed a rom before I have backed up the current rom through Rom Manager and flashed Clockworkmod recovery and I have the unloocked bootloader root as well. I have a question if and when I flash the new rom through Rom Manager does it not wipe and clear data etc. automatically? If not how would i go about doing that. Any and all help is greatly Appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MY bootloader is LOCKED, i rooted differently. Since you have a UNLOCKED bootloader, you will have no problems booting.
I still never got a chance to play with the N1 yet, ill keep u guys updated

When you go to flash a new ROM in Manager, it will offer you the option to wipe and/or backup before it applies the ROM.
Thank you so much for the kind replies!! I meant to say that I had a locked bootloader root using the one click root and unroot. I guess this means I would face the same situation as described earlier in this thread. I am very grateful to all the posters for sharing. THANK YOU!!!
Do you mean it hangs on the nexus one X boot animation? Because CM6 has it's own boot animation you shouldn't see that at all.
I would test it with a different Rom to see if you get the same result. If it's only CM6 doing that, maybe try the nightly version.
Hey guys, so I had MIUI since it came out and kept updating it every friday like I'm sure everyone else does that has it, but today I wanted to try out a Gingerbread ROM other than MIUI or CM7 so I went and tried to install Mosaic IV. I followed the tutorial on MobileTechVideos for installing it and when I got to the part where I had to install the zip from the sd card I did it and it got stuck at formatting partitions. So I waited a while, about ten minutes, then took out the battery and tried starting over from stock again. Then I realized that I was supposed to use a different kernel for Mosaic IV then the one Josh used in the video. So I downloaded that kernel and used that one instead of the one he used in the tutorial. And I couldn't get into recovery mode with it. So I flashed to stock again and redid the whole thing, this time I got into recovery and flashed it but it still got stuck at formatting partitions. So at this point I was like crap I have to get a different ROM. So I tried flashing Serendipity and that wouldn't install either. Then I tried MIUI again to at least get back to what I had earlier today, and I got an error while flashing the captivate-efsbackup zip in recovery. I have no idea what to do, all I want is to just get off of the stock firmware which im stuck with for now since I have to go to work in a little bit. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance
I had a similar problem, and the ultimate fix for me was this:
Flash back to eclair stock (which you did)
Master Clear (aka format internal sd - make sure to back up your stuff first!)
Install CWM (may have to go manually - renaming to update.zip and reinstalling packages)
Wipe dalvik cache and cache partition, as well as user data
Install a stable Froyo ROM (take your pick, preferably a full-wipe with no bootloaders)
Reboot to CWM and do a second dalvik/cache/user data cleaning
(If you're going GB)
reboot to download mode
flash stock GB (WATCH OUT FOR BOOTLOADERS!)
boot it up, let it settle, reboot to CWM
flash your GB rom.
(If not)
Go where you would go from a stable Froyo Rom.
That's how I got back from a messed up phone with GB bootloaders to a working Mosaic installation. I can't say it will definitely work for you, but it may give you some ideas.
+1 get clockwork recovery...you need to make sure the rom you are flashing is compatible with the version of CWR you are using.
For example a rom that needs to be installed with CWR3 you will need to install the zip presumably from CWR2. Pull the battery and reboot back to recovery - you should now be in the updated version of CWR. Then for safety sake - re install your zip.
Reboot and you should be all set.
I had lots of trouble going from 2.2 to 2.3. Flashing between 2.3 roms is very easy comparatively

so your saying that you went to a gingerbread rom straight from MIUI? if that's true it failed because you didn't have the gingerbread bootloaders before you installed the rom

I flashed the gingerbread stock rom and have it rooted with xcal's kernel, but when i flashed mosaic IV it got stuck at formatting partitions and i pulled the battery after about 15 minutes and then restarted my phone to find it stuck in a bootloop. So i had to start from stock again and now im back to gingerbread stock with root. I'm kinda scared to try again because it takes me like 30 minutes to get back to gingerbread stock with root. I think ill just stick with stock for a little bit
Since about a week I'm having the following problems:
It is extremely difficult to get my phone running ICS. I tried like 10 different ROMs, the only one currently working is Dark Knight. In between I managed to run CM9 Nighlty (2 days) and Infinitum 2.2 (3 days)
Why is it so difficult? Well - I believe, I'm doing all the correct steps: Flashing JVZ with Odin, rebooting, flashing CF Root, rebooting. Enter CWM, wipe data, cache, dalvik, format system -> Install any ICS rom
Currently, CM9 doens't work at all, I get boot loops after the initial reboot and can't enter recovery
Well, when I finally manage to install any rom (method: install Dark Knight - 5.5 atm - install any rom afterwards - my phone boots up correctly and is perfectly usable
But: Whenever I reboot, I keep getting boot loops with no chance of entering recovery. None of the usual methods work.
Stupid thing: I don't need to reboot. But every other day the phone tends to reboot itself (at least that is what I experienced and sorta guess)
Result: I take it out of my pocket or look at it on my desk and see boot loops after 2 or 3 days
What can I do, why is that? I don't want to run Gingerbread
I am not a noob - I have been running any rom before for one and a half years without problems and flashed mostly without any problems
Believe me - I have tried everything for several days. Flashing the recovery fix with Odin doens't help either. Afterwards I am a able to boot intro recovery but can't install any rom due to build.prop errors. However, I can flash a kernel... Result: boot loop. Solution: Start over with Gingerbread and Odin
The more I think about it, the more I belive there could be an underlying hardware problem. Maybe something with the internal NAND?
I am greatful for any help or new ideas which I haven't tried so far... Thanks a lot in advance!
I know it's a long shot, but maybe you have issues with datadata folder? Use root explorer and see how much free space you have there...
Maybe try this:
After Odin, When in CWM, flash first a new kernel (try devil.072). Make sure to mount folders with CWM before. After flushing, go to advanced and reboot recovery. Now you have a new version of CWM (which supports screen tuch...). Now, from mounts and storage, format everything. Now flush the rom you want - in this case, I recommend Slim 3.4. Don't install anything yet - just let it run after flushing. Just login to your google account.
See if it works.. hope it helps
Thanks a lot! Unfortunately, it didn't work.
I tried your method which didn't even end up in a bootloop but in recovery after every flash/try to reboot.
/edit: Speaking of reboots - I tried to install CM9 afterwards/instead -> boot loop
Hmmm u have a interesting problem. Do u wipe everything and have u tried starting from a different stock gb

Just try it again but do NOT select reboot recovery. It is a common bug that you won't be able to leave recovery again. Just reboot the phone and be sure to quickly press 3 button combo again to get into recovery again. You should then be able to format / reflash and so on. Just make sure you never select reboot recovery when you just came the long way from odin. In doubt just do as I stated: normal reboot and press 3 button combo quickly.
Good luck!

Ok, That shall be my next try Btw: Another strange effect: I flashed Dark Knight 5.5, did nothing but click through the setup assistant rebooted - and voilà - boot loop.
Will report back in a few minutes Thanks a lot, guys!
/Edit: Well - a litte success... I was able to boot into the system. First thing I did was change lcd density and rebooted - everything was fine. As I didn't have wifi or data connection I wanted to flash another kernel (devil) and hit reboot recovery from the power menu.
--> Boot loop again.
To the other guys: I tried JVU and JVZ with different downloads and two different laptops. Which starting base should I try next?
/Edit2: I'm going to stay on Gingerbread for the day. I need my phone and intend to enjoy the fantastic weather for the rest of the day... Will be back this evening. I am glad for further feedback and ideas

Umm well I use jvu and have no problems. This might sound stupid but when I had a similar prob (I flashed a kernel on dark knight 4 and got into a bootloop and couldn't enter recovery) I did a factory restset after backing up my SD card data and flashing jvu, then I reflashed jvu. Rooted, wiped rebooted recovery, wiped again, rebooted recovery again, then I flashed dk 3 then dk 4 without a wipe, the restored my apps and copyed my SD data back - I hadn't been able to flash a rom since the bootloop I got it working with dk 3 but then I got no boot animation and I just stopped there, the above process worked for me I know u on dk 5.5 but try dk 3 you should find the link in the dk thread around April 12-16 this year.

You may flash the new kernel right away after flashing the desired rom. Maybe that would stabilize everything... can't make any more sense of it right now, sorry :/ Maybe you could try to use the ultimate kernel cleaning script AFTER flashing the rom and BEFORE flashing the new kernel (with no reboot in between).
Script is somewhere out there, I'm gonna search it right now...
/EDIT: Wasn't really hard to find after all, there you go: Ultimate Kernel Cleaning Script
try this firmware for odin:

Firstly I apologize for posting in Q&A's, due to the 10 post restriction I was unable to post in the rocket rom thread in android development and Q&A's seemed the second most ideal place.
After a day of horror, I tried merely flashing Abyss Kernel 4.2 but I ended up somehow in a soft brick accessing the recovery and download modes only. After ages I decided to try my luck installing Rocket rom v7 and it thankfully worked and my phone is up and running.
However, I have faced a couple of issues with it, of which the major one is the lack of response when hitting the home (center key) on my international version of the galaxy note. It doesn't work whatsoever, I've also noticed that the lock screen has disappeared too, so when I put the phone to sleep and wake it I get taken to the page I closed on rather than the lock screen. The latter I have fixed by using widgetlocker, although I am still oblivious as to how to fix the home key losing it's function.
Any advice etc? (especially if it's kept in layman terms, and nothing drastic... I despise flashing!!)
Moreover I was just wondering is there a set of instructions one could follow to return to a stock rom on the galaxy note via CWM?
Kind regards and thanks for your time

on what rom did you flash v7 ?
iam currently running it no issues at all, everything works maybe you 'll have to do a clean install just flash abyss kernel full wipe with it and reflash the rocketrom v7 using it dont not reboot until you flash the ROM since you flash a GB kernel on an ICS system....... wont boot just softbrick. watch it!
sounds like the system files a corrupt somehow and btw if case you changed kernel let us know too....

Ah yes sorry wasn't clearn.
I was firstly on ICS 4.0.3 stock rom XXLPY, I kept getting nagged about the kernel instability so I went and tried to flash Abyss kernel 4.2 (somehow stuffed it up ended up soft bricked). So I then flashed Rocket Rom v5 (after properly flashing Abyss kernel) via CWM. I think follow the steps to upgrade to v7.
Tbh I really do not want to mess with flashing and ODIN again >.> have become paranoid.

Wouldn't that just give me 2 copies of rocket rom and cause issues? Or will it install missing files?
So I should just install zip from SD and that's all?
Ok I am redownloading now and going to give it a shot.
Moreover, I would love for any advice on how I can return to stock rom... any advice would be most welcome. I'd prefer only to use CWM.
Or if there is perhaps another fix the issue above? Any comments would be most appreciated!
First of all yes you can install zip from as and select v7 (no it won't harm it will overwrite all files Yes, I understand want have duplicates unless they are from another rom but again full wipe would have removed them from before so you are ok.
Well idunno about CWM stock rom I prefer you use either pc odin or mobile odin (recommended) just charge the phone to 100% and install mobile odin set you stick firmware on sdcard and select open file in mobile odin then in case you want the root keep options as they are and select wiping option both. In case you don't want root deselect the object superuser options and still check the willing one
About home key issue might be a script issue one of hardware files is messed up so I can't tell for sure which but mostly the files are at system/usr/

About home key issue might be a script issue one of hardware files is messed up so I can't tell for sure which but mostly the files are at system/usr/

Thanks for all your help REVERSiN, just to update you.
I tried re-installing v7 rocketrom and flashing however still faced the same issue of the home key etc. So I kept a stock rom in my external SD went to CWM recovery and did a full wipe, delvik cache wipe and cache wipe tried installing the stock rom however CWM had issues opening it and aborted. So I installed rocketrom v7 again and voila it works perfectly now and seems brilliant.
I think I still want to return to stock eventually, but I refuse to use Odin, I tried using odin twice and both times it froze the first on factorycs (although my phone wasn't bricked) and the second time yesterday on cache so yah I have had terrible luck with ODIN and I refuse to use it,.
Nonetheless if there is way to flash stock rom using CWM would be epic. However, until I am 100% sure on how to do it I'll be sticking to rocketrom.
Thanks again for all your help and time!
okay, first of all i will say that im sorry if what im writing is full on faulty language. enlgish isnt my best. aaaanuslut i got my brothers old gt n7000 with a broken touchpad and screen for free. i repaired that with 160€ and my brother said that the phone was rooted. i found out he had allso overclocked the device. But after a few restarts to the phone it just said something what i think was in spanish or something "bla bla bla dos sistema". After that came not your old samsung logo, but purple blueish circles just circling. Ant thats it, it would not start. So i read about bricked devices, and as much as i understood i had a soft brick. so i was looking aroun the forum for some easy fixes becasue im totally stranger to this kind of hacking. i finaly found this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F97qo1moAR4 and i downloaded custom jb N7000XXLSZ_N7000OPSLS6_N7000XXLSO_HOME.tar. it did work but again after i tried to restart the phone it was stuck.
So since i dont want any custom stuff i think to my self why not stock rom. so i found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997. But since i dont like JB as much as ICS i will try ICS. Her is the question: i allready did the factory reset and cache wipe but this instruction says not to FROM ICS.
Warning :
Don't wipe anything from stock ICS recovery
Don't factory reset/Hard reset on stock ICS.
Don't flash any Wipe version of ICS ROM
Does that mean that i have allready gone wrong or does that mean that you have to have ICS on youre phone and then you cant do any of those things? its really confusing and i dont want to fk up my phone.
Did you make a wipe on stock ICS recovery?

Yes i can
flash via recovery phils kernel, (a newer one) reboot in recovery and perform the wipe for new rom option.
That should clean your device good.
Then flash what you want. After that download an emmc check app and check. Shouldnt be needed, but its nice to check.

Allright, thankyou, since i am new to all this stuff i will try to locate a tutorial. i dont have any idea for instance, what is recovery phils kernel.
at own risk, here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901191. Download zip, keep zipped and put on external sd. Reboot recovery and flash via install from sd option.
Since we are going to wipe latest version will do fine. However if you plan to reflash the original Samsung rom one that is same or likewise version is best to quickly root after flashing rom, so you can flash speedmod kernel (better battery life) after. Find in original dev thread of this forum.
Remember, via factory format on phills kernel recovery(reboot in recovery) you have the option to do a wipe for new rom.
Otherwise on Phills kernel recovery do factory, cache wipe. In advanced dalvik cache, in mounts all(warning take out external sd before so you dont wipe that)
Then your phone is clean, you shouldnt have to wipe efs anyway, so dont tick that option ever in pc odin when flashing rom with odin.
This is the cleanest way to get rid of All leftovers and generally the way to go before flashing any new rom. However risk of loosing photos and whatever you have not backed up. In general backing up is bad as old files/db/etc are put back (risk of unforeseen stuff happening) Check one of my 5 threads for what backups there are. Via my profile you find them
Enjoy!

Okay, im thankful for all this information, useful stuff, got the PhilZ-cwm6-XXLT6-XSA-5.06.1-signed.zip.
let us know how it went, ok?
OOOKAY! so i finaly did what baz77 described. and rooted with another phils kernel witch i chose after my downloaded rom. Did root it, and after powering down and waiting about 3-5 sec. i started it, and it worked, no more getting stuck on gt n7000 screen and so on. and i also downloaded emmc check app, but unfortunatley it said. Brick bug: YES. Insane Chip.
sorry for double post, how do i delete? all i can do is use edit/delete button but it only edits the post, how can i delte it?
You cant but thats ok.
all n7000 have the brickbug to my knowledge, the test should state if the bug has been triggered, if not then super, if it has, best to secure the broken emmc sectors. Tricky.
I think having it clean now should eliminate earlier issues Enjoy your n7000
Thank you, i will, lately my n7000 has been rebooting randomly, any fix or know issue why this occures?

not sure how that is happening. Maybe a logcat (logfiles) shows whats happening when it happens. Could be app. Maybe rom issue. Method of elimination counts here.
On safe kernel, try dalvik cache, cache wipes and fix permissions in recovery, reboot and check if reoccurs.
Otherwise, updated versions, clean install I would recommend.
You can check also before with that emmc app if there are bad sectors. I dont expect it but you never know
Okay, its been a long time since i did that stuff. And it worked allirght. i got my phone working and rooted. Great stuff here
Sorry for updating old topic. Since people who have helped me with my phone allready are familiar with my case. I was wisiting a friend of mine in england and after i returned home my phone is f**ked. Everything works okay, but when i turn on mobile data or wifi it instantly freezes. Takes about 15-20 sec. and then phone does an automatic restart which restarting gets into boot loop. I have to hold down bower button to reboot again. When it asks me for sim unlock code, i have to be quick when im inserting it because i need to turn off mobiledata/wifi as soon as ia get my phone running again, otherwise it will freeze and crash again. Can it be somekind of virus or something? Is it most likely that i have to again format and install philz kernel and all that stuff? Thanks in advance.
that would be the best way to start..IMO
I really dont have the time or opportunity to format and reflash, but i guess its really difficult, near imbossible to tell whats wrong with my samsung. Bust still, any other suggestions?
