Quick question, before trying out the leaked ICS for the chinese Note, I made a nandroid backup for both my old gingerbread rom and ICS rom. After trying it out, I decided that gingerbread is probably more stable for daily use. Then I try a CWM restore and it failed. It failed at system.
Then I tried out my nandroid backup for the the leaked ICS and it failed at system too.
Anyone have any idea what is causing this problem?
I was able to use odin to reflash the leaked ICS which is good, but I still wonder why this happened? It doesn't inspire confidence when a nandroid backup can fail just like this.
Mine did that.
If you attempt to restore, then after it fails, attempt to restore the same backup, it seems to work.
I think this was listed as expected behaviour in some thread. or at least someone else had the same experience as me.
This is what i posted on my thread when i hit this issue, takes some fiddling but worked for me 3 times
1. Boot into recovery
2. Attempt to wipe cache.
3. Attempt to factory reset
4. Start to recover rom it will hang.
5. pull battery
6. Boot into recovery
7. Select mounts and storage
8. Unmount system.
9. Format system
10. Remount system
11. Unmount cache
12. Format cache
13. Remount
14. Restore rom
U may need to pull battery a few times. But eventually it works and restores fine
The key is the first failed restore this has to be done.
I spent enough time myself doing it hence i got frustrated and stopped done it 3 or 4 times.

Glad it worked for ya, puzzled me for a bit
There is another way to get your restore to work:
1. download AbyssNote 3.9 kernel from this thread. It's a flashable zip.
2. put this zip on your SD Card before you try to restore your previous system or flash a fresh GB rom
3. when you want to restore, power off your phone
4. boot into recovery (Volume up + Home + Power)
5. choose 'install zip from SD Card'
6. navigate to your Abyss kernel zip and flash it
7. go back to the Recovery start menu
8. go to advanced/reboot recovery <--- this will reboot the phone directly to recovery
9. you will discover that you now have Hyperdroid Redpill Recovery - it comes with the Abyss kernel - it's pretty much the same thing as CWMR
10. wipe cache, dalvik, do your factory reset
11. start your restore, or flash a GB rom and it will work.
Hope this helps.

It worked when all else failed,
Thank you
You're welcome.
What worked for me:
1. Installing RocketRomv20(probably going to work with any ROM)
2. Restart your phone, wait until it's ready for use
3. Use CWM if you installed it, then restore via using the App, not by rebooting into Recovery
4. Wait for it to finish
5. Done, your phone (should) be working again on an older backup!

What are you on about here? We're talking about specific restore problems from ICS to GB here, not just any old GB to GB restore.
Oh, my bad. I wanted to post this in a thread where one guy was experience a loop where the Galaxy Note message wouldn't go away, but he would still can get back to CWM. Sorry.
Thanks everyone!!! I think we should try to get this info posted on the op for the leaked rom. Judging by the responses here, a lot of people had this problem.

All else failed... God bless the red pill recovery! Thanks for this.
Yeah red pill recovery worked for me too. Although i needed to resore an aosp ics backup the ics cwm failed to restore the backup created by itself so i had to flash abyyss note 3.9 and restore using red pill recovery.
Hallelujah!! Redpill recovery saved my night too! Got the same system restore error, when restoring my 30min earlier done backup! Clock is 1.14 am in Finland and i have wake-up at 8.00 am to work, so I realy had to get my phone working again, and it did it! Thank you guys!!

Currently I'm on ICS Stunner 4.3. I come to this ROM through rooting method using dr. Ketan (by zergRush).
Now my question is:
1. Will the above method (Redpill) of going back to GB will work for me?
2. How to flash the GB ROM in the Redpill Recovery?
Thanks in advance.

Yes, the Abyss/Redpill method will work. Just download a custom GB Rom (Cassie's XtraLite, Darky or Chrak's or whatever), place it on your SD Card and flash it after you've done your wipes from Redpill.
Hello,
I'm not gonna panic, as I think Ive not bricked my phone YET.
Here is what I have done, I have a GALAXY S I9000.
Have been using it for quite some time now. 2 years ago, I have flashed it with - hardcore's kernel with the ClockworkMod Recovery - using Odin.
Today I decided to give Cyanogenmod a go, followed the steps here. - http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S:_Full_Update_Guide
Since I have the hardoce's kernel, I skipped this Installing the ClockworkMod Recovery - and moved on to - Flashing CyanogenMod.
I will go step by step from here.
Download the latest version of CyanogenMod.
Optional: Download the Google Apps for the device.
Place the CyanogenMod update.zip file on the root of the internal memory.
Optional: Place the Google Apps .zip on the root of the internal memory also.
Boot into the ClockworkMod Recovery.
Once the device boots into the ClockworkMod Recovery, use the side volume buttons to move around, and either the power button or the trackball to select.
Select the option to Wipe data/factory reset.
Then select the option to Wipe cache partition.
Select Install zip from sdcard.
done these, no problem so far.
[*]Select Choose zip from sdcard.
when I chose this, phone rebooted, it was so fast something may have come up and I didnt see.
Now I am stuck in a boot loop:
- Galaxy S I9000 samsung screen comes up, goes away for a second, comes up again.
- A page with code appearing from the bottom comes up really fast ( logo in the middle changes quickly) then it disappears.
- whole thing starts again.
UPDATE: I got a picture of the fast screen that comes up. : http://localhostr.com/files/b5NzFRy/2012-08-27 05.07.32.jpg
Some observations.
- I can go into download mode when opening it with the key combo.
- loop only stops when I unplug the battery
I need advice on what caused this and how to fix this, please help me.

are you not able to get into recovery? If only download than you need to get back to GB and than do a progressive update from GB to ICS to JB
Flash it again. From what I've heard, it only flashes the kernel the first time.
I had the same problem today with CM7 today. Just reboot in recovery and flash again cm zip, form there on everything is gonna run smooth!

Install zip from sdcard
Choose zip from sdcard
Select the ROM
You will get boot loop
Again boot into recovery
Install the same zip file one more time

Hi,
I had the same pb coming from a GB
I think this pb is very common
1) DON'T WORRY !
2) Unplug the battery when bootlooping
3) Put the SGS in Recovery Mode (the CWM's version has changed)
4) Select the CM .zip and flash it AGAIN
5) When it's done, reboot system
This time, everything shoot be OK
Just be carefull with your IMEI (always have a backup of EFS folder !)

Same here, after the Samsung and CM logos, and splash animation, it says :
"Encryption unsuccessful.
Encryption was interrupted and can't complete. As a result, the data on your phone is no longer accessible.
To resume using your phone, you must perform a factory reset...."
After I tap Reset phone, it goes to CWM recovery.
Do the factory reset and the same thing occured in loop.
I came from JVU and CF root.

Hi guys, just got a Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000 dirty cheap from Hong Kong, and using it now in the states. I am a huge fan of rooting/flashing and stuff, so I decided to give myself a little test and see how long I can keep this phone stock. I lasted two days...haha.
So, I set out to see how to root this thing. After reading thread after thread, I learned about the wipe brick bug on stock Samsung kernels.
Now here's my question:
I want to use method 1A (to be safe) using this guide here, and it led me to this thread. Now here's where I get confused. Which kernel am I supposed to download and flash?
My Stock ROM system info (remember, this is from Hong Kong)
Model Number:
GT-N7000
Android Version:
4.0.3
Baseband Version:
N7000XXLR1
Kernel Version:
3.0.15-N7000ZSLPF-CL558440

Build Number:
IML74K.ZSLPF
Any for of enlightenment is greatly appreciated, thanks guys!
The easiest is flash a safe custom kernel that will be safe to wipe, provides root access, and has Clockworkmod Recovery. Below is how I setup my phone to flash Paranoidandroid. I started with a stock N7000XXLRT rom. I did install and run Triangle Away to later to remove the yellow triangle counter warning on boot. Largely cosmetic. Please check wikis of this speedmod kernel supports ICS 4.0.3.
If all you want is root and a safe kernel then you end with step 3 and apply Triangle Away.
1. Begin with a stock ICS rom on your Note.
2. Use Odin on the PC,select PDA, and flash speedmod-kernel-n7000-ics-k3-13-Odin.tar with usb cable. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1673072
3. After flashing speedmod kernel you will have root access, and a custom Clockworkmod Recovery in which to flash custom roms.
4. Get Paranoidandroid zip and Gapps zip from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1871713 . Copy the Paranoidandroid and Gapps zip files on your phone's internal sd card.
5. Backup efs folder just to be sure. Use kTool from Google Play or manually copy the EFS folder with Explorer+ also from Google Play. Copy the files to your pc.
6. Press power button, select reboot, reboot into recovery and go to backup and restore section and create a backup. Select go back and reboot.
6. Reboot into recovery (Clockworkmod Recovery) wipe cache partition, wipe data/factory reset, wipe dalvik cache (advanced).
7. From recovery, select install from zip from sd card. Select choose zip from internal sdcard. Select the Paranoid rom zip and flash. Do the same to flash Gapps zip. Go back and reboot.
*When flashing nightlies, no need to wipe cache, data, and dalvik. But install Gapps zip again in Recovery. You will need to set up your Google account again.

Thanks. So it doesn't matter that I am on Stock Samsung ICS ROM from Hong Kong?
And also, what version of Odin do I use, or does it not matter?
Yes. HK rom pretty much is the same kernel with local enhancements. The XXLR1 seems to be German or European. It should be ok. Again please verify if the speedmod kernel works with ICS 4.0.3. The site says ICS so I think it does.
I used Odin3-v1.85.zip. Make sure you have an excellent usb cable. Test the rig by copying large files between your pc and the Note internal sdcard.
Solution- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=51503452
Yesterday i tried multiple times to install eXistenZ Ultra v2.0.0 but evrey time i get nothing except Bootloop.
My phone never vibrate twice after flashing 266 kernel.
I read OP instruction very carefully & follow it but no luck. Only i miss one point every time- "Unmount System", when i go to corresponding menu in CWM i only get "Mount System". So my system is already unmounted, for that reason i skip that step.
Please help me to get rid of bug-full Stock 4.3.
My step-
1. Flash full 12.0.A.2.254
2. Flash 12.0.A.1.257 (kernel only)
3. Root (DooMLoRD_Easy-Rooting-Toolkit_v18_perf-event-exploit)
4. Flash 12.0.A.2.254(kernel only)
5. Install CWM (Philz, CWM Touch and TWRP)
6. Go to CMW
7. Wipe Data, Cache, Dalvik Cache
8. Unmount System (i skip that step, when i go to corresponding menu in CWM i only get "Mount System". So my system is already unmounted)
9. Flash ROM + SuperSU_fix
10. Power OFF Recovery
11. Flash 12.1.A.0.266 (kernel only)
12. Power ON phone & waiting for Vibrate Twice(I never get it, i tried at least 5-6 times to flash this ROM but i never get it)
Thanks in advance
I have the same problem on the "unmount system". Hope someone can help us..

Can you please link me to Stock 4.3 [0.266] Kernel only file ?
Can you still access CWM recovery ?
Do this -
Do a factory reset in recovery
Then go and UN- MOUNT System, If its already Unmounted mount it and unmount it again.
Then Flash ROM and SU Fix and flash the kernel after that.
For anyone having bootloop while installation follw this method
1. Flash full 12.0.A.2.254
2. Flash 12.0.A.1.257 (kernel only)
3. Root (DooMLoRD_Easy-Rooting-Toolkit_v18_perf-event-exploit)
4. Flash 12.0.A.2.254(kernel only)
5. Install CWM (Philz, CWM Touch and TWRP)
6. Go to CMW
7. Wipe Data, Cache, Dalvik Cache
8. Unmount System (if it is mounted)
9. Flash ROM + SuperSU_fix
10. Power OFF Recovery
11. Flash 12.1.A.0.266 (kernel only)(If u get bootloop then step 12 )
12. Flash 12.0.A.2.254 kernel only and on the mobile till you get vibration two times, then force switch off using pin in back then flash .266 kernel again and wait for 3 to 4 bootloops. If you get the same problem again flash .254 kernel and repeat the same step once or twice.
13. Power ON phone & waiting for Vibrate Twice

Here is it- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=51503452
These are the problems. I did a clean flash and cleared the cache partition, and did a factory reset.
1. No notifications appear at all. Even when I have incoming mail and so on, no new notifications appear in the main bar. I only know things are happening when I check individual apps.
2. I have no settings tiles at all in the pull down quick settings. How do I add to this?
3. The default browser cannot be used. When I click on the icon, it opens to a blank screen and closes within half a second. It never stays open.
4. I can't boot into recovery at all. I've installed clockworkmod via Rom manager, but I cannot boot into it, nor can I use the volume up+home+power combo to reach it.

Can anyone help?
Try booting into download mode and flash a stock rom via odin.
1) take titanium backup of the apps
2) copy internal SD data to PC
3) download KK kernel depending on what recovery you want i.e bauner kernel for cm/kitkat for cwm recovery and raw kernel for twrp.
4) download Odin format kernel (.tar) from bauners kernel thread (its the kernel for touchwiz jb) and keep it on PC.
3) download a different ROM and transfer with the desired kernel to SD card and external SD.
[ we are transferring it to both SD cards in case you are not able to boot to recovery and may have to flash a whole ROM to get it back ]
8) power off and put in download mode by pressing power+home+volume down
9) connect to computer and open Odin and select the tar file i.e the bauner jb kernel in PDA and flash, it will show kernel and successful.
10) once you see the galaxy note logo with yellow triangle remove the battery and don't let the device boot into ROM.
11) put the battery back and boot the device into recovery by power+home+ volume up. if it doesn't boot into recovery then try again.
12) once you are in recovery flash the KK kernel.
13) do factory data reset, wipe cache, dalvik cache and format system.
14) flash a ROM other than PA and gapps if required.
15) reboot
16) use triangle away app to get rid of the flash counter and triangle
these are the steps I followed and was able to successfully flash ROM without losing any data.
follow only if you know what you are doing. I am not responsible if you lose data or mess up your device.
Hope it helps
thank you very much
