Alternative to DropBox? - Off-topic

While DropBox is a very useful service, I'm in search of free cloud-based storage for my mom to host her HD videos of her granddaughter... She has hit the 2.5GB cap with just a few files, and I refuse to pay for extra storage, when I know that better options certainly exist... I'll just setup a file server at my house if I have to... But that's not practical for her uses... She was trying to email a 300MB video and getting angry that the server was rejecting it, LMAO!!!
So does anyone know of any other free cloud-based storage she could use instead? As much storage space as possible is obviously a super plus, with the ability to publicly link to them, and the ability to stream them, rather than download them would be great too, but not required...
Any ideas?
Thanks!
Brian

Questions and Answers

Box.net does 50GB accounts for free. Not sure if there's a file-size limit, but you can make folders public via a URL. There's definitely no streaming though, but still... 50GB!!
I'm just waiting for Google to sort out Drive and give me more than 5GB free. I will pay for more when I need it, but I expect they'll have upped the cap by that point as I only really use it for visual studio and eclipse projects, and they're basically text files.
There's also a referral thread in off-topic, where people give you their links to join up so you both get a bit of extra space. I know of sugarsync too, but I'm not sure what their deal is. Worth a google at any rate.

No worries mate. Incidentally, I just checked and SugarSync is only 5GB. You'd be better off getting DropBox and posting a referral link in the thread I mentioned!

It seems Box.net has also capped their bandwidth...

Cloud storage is all the rage nowadays, and Box is doing a promotion that's sure to make those of you who just can't get enough happy: the company is giving away free-for-life 50GB accounts to anyone who downloads and uses the updated Android app by March 23rd. As a bonus, the 25MB file size limit that's placed on free accounts is being bumped up to 100MB for Android users as well

Unfortunately it only gave me 7GB, but thats much better than 2.5 GB...
I suppose with a combination of SkyDrive and DropBox after referrals, she should have enough space to do what she wants...

You could try wupload. 750gb free. But they disabled sharing so it might not be the one.

There was a "hack" in XDA that allowed you to get 50GB for Box, but it stands no longer. Wupload.com gives you 750GB free, but I dunno how reliable it is...

win741.com - Windows 7 student upgrade- $29.99

so I know this has pretty much absolutely nothing to do with development, other than the fact that an OS is where most of the stuff starts, but I just wanted to share with you guys that if you have a .edu email address (a student address) you qualify for the student upgrade to either windows7 home premium or Professional.
for more info go to win741.com.
Mods will probably lock this or move it, but I just had to share this with a community that has given me so much!

just FYI - this is all through windows, and is 100% real.

I mean, it's a nice gesture, but it really doesn't belong here, especially not in the development section. If you doubt yourself, you probably should steer clear of posting.
Besides, Android caters particularly to the Linux constituency, so, you know.
Again, thanks for the info, but some advertisement about a new Windows version is entirely unrelated to the development of the Android platform.
i know its in the wrong place, in the wrong forum completely. I also know that Linux is the primary for android, but I just wanted to share and get this out there. Like I said in the OP, just wanted to give back. I could have posted this is Dream general, but honestly, who would have looked there...?

The only thing about 25GB I can think of is the HTC One series offer, but they plugged up that glitch and took away the extra space from anyone who exploited it with a non-One series phone.

You should have mentioned that...That changes everything...Your thread is misleading. Yes, it's an HTC/Dropbox promotion for people who own a One-series phone. They get 25GB for a year. Your 25GB is about to go bye-bye though because Dropbox is cracking down on people who got the free space using what you did.

Yeah I didn't realize it was from that when I posted. I thought it had something to do with the new competition from google. They can take the space back, I don't care. It's their glitch, not my theft.

Google Drive...

I've been user of Google Docs since it was introduced and I am now a Google Drive user, like the rest of us. I use Drive for all of my docs, it's particularly good for that, IMO. Here are some questions I am hoping my fellow N7 users can answer, even though they are not N7-specific...
- Google announced that all Drive members have been moved from 5gb to 15gb. Has anyone actually seen this yet?
- When photos are stored in Drive, you view them in G+. Is there any way to view them just as files in a typical filling/folder-based structure?
- What's your take? Has this new 15gb allowance pulled you away from your Dropbox, Box, SkyDrive, etc?
- Am I the only one that finds the G+ presentation of photos somewhat goofy and Facebook-like? Not sure I need anything more than the file structure that Dropbox provides for my photos. Maybe it'll just take time for me to adjust?
Thanks!
-bk
Anxiously awaiting the extra storage but nothing yet. I've started using Drive more in anticipation of the increase, but I still prefer dropbox. I have lots of dropbox storage and I use it for my important files, but I have started using Drive for my less important files.

I use Drive a lot more than Dropbox because of the 3 extra gigabytes of space. And because I use it mainly for documents and presentations, I like being able to create and edit documents in a web browser. I'm also excited for the 15gb upgrade.

I'm actually seeing it for the first time today. I see it in my Gmail and also when i look at how much storage I'm using in my Drive account (attached image).
I haven't stored pictures in my Drive account, but I did use Picasa and that's all integrated into G+ (this could've been like this for a while, but I haven't seen it this way before).
I still have more space in my Dropbox account so this won't stop how much I use Dropbox. I'm mainly using Dropbox for syncing my photos that I take with my cell. I may change this at some point, but not just because Google gave me more storage.
I use Copy. 20GB space straight after sign up.

I just moved all my pix out of G+ into permanent storage. But while they were in G+, I don't recall seeing them listed in my Drive folders. If there were right there, my bad, I just missed it. nope, dont see that feature yet, but I'm guessing they'll implement it? You might as well sign up, it takes like 3 minutes for 50GB and even if you dont use it now, you can use it later
How long does it last? I assume they don't just give your 50 gb forever. How much do they charge to renew later? It would suck to put important back ups on it and have them disappear in a year.

Best hosting site

which is best file hosting site according to you and why ???
For me Devhost is the best. Not sure why, but I quite enjoy the fact there's no intrusive ads, or captchas (hope I spelled that right). Browsing through files to download is really as well, and it would be perfect if you're working on a ROM or the like and plan to have future updates. All your downloads would be conveniently in the same place! Admittedly, I've never developed a ROM nor uploaded anything to Devhost, but I have never seen a complain about it or server crashes before

I've used HostGator for years (about 4 years now, to be exact), and have never had any major problems with them. Yeah, they've had occassional outtages, but have been online about 99.5% of the time, and been prompt with fixing any problems that come up.
They're fast, efficient, offer cPanel (and all of the stuff that comes with), and even SSH access. The prices are pretty good, and customer support is great. You can be up and running within an hour of purchase, and know that you're backed by a quality company.
Never use godady.com, they totally freak you out..

For my friends am i using 2shared and for big files and much files am i using 4Shared for the management like i said!
To give you another one that works:
Zippyshare: it has much ads but i awesomely good working
Like you see in one of my older posts ( datafilehost.com )
That stays the best one and i´ḿ using that always and as second mirrors am i using 4shared and 2Shared and sometimes Zippshare!
Only Hosgator and GoDaddy are the providers that I trust. I think that they have proven themselves over the years already.

4shared is not permitted on XDA though. Requires registration to download... To its site, or a social media site.
Either is anything else requiring any kind of registration.
And any pay per click advertising links are out too.
Only sites that go directly to the download, without clicking ads, or accounts on any site, are permitted.
Food for thought. :good:
Edit: one more... Sites that contain free paid apps (warez) are not allowed either.
Hostinger. It has free domain .xyz, name with it looks cool.
Personally I use Dropbox. These days it has a public share function that doesn't require registration (you can simply close the popup.) Google Drive is also an option.
Zippyshare also works well, particularly for larger files. It doesn't require registration for a speed above 10Kbps, unlike most. I have to share a lot of large files, Zippy works well if you can't use cloud storage. Haven't seen a lot of advertising on it, but then I'm using Adblock and Noscript.
And then there's the regular file hosts, uploaded.net, uploadfiles.eu, tusfiles.net, turbobit.net, userscloud.com, etcetera.
Of course it's not a good idea to use any filehosting site that features advertising when you send the link to someone who's technologically handicapped. For those I just use WeTransfer, because the idiots kept clicking on the fake Download buttons....

You do realize that's basically every file hosting site in existence, right? Even Google Drive is used to share warez these days..
(But I gather you mean the sites that tell you where to get the apps.)

LOL Yes, there's sites that are known for Warez.... Not allowed.
Dropbox and similar hosts are not really "host sites".... So that's a little different.
I only spoke up, cause I wanted to clarify the site rules. So members reading this understand if their thread is closed.
