Pre-paid carrier discussion thread: which one do you use and why? - Off-topic

My AT&T contract is going to expire in couple of weeks (yay!) and I am looking to go pre-paid. Have been looking at all major GSM MVNO's and still can't decide which one to go with. I currently use GNex so either AT&T or T-Mo based carrier should be OK.
I have been leaning towards Straight Talk but some of the horror stories of people getting disconnected without notice and losing their phone numbers frankly scare me. I've had my phone number for alost 10 years and do not want to lose it. So, which pre-paid carrier do you use and why.

Yes sir, I am in US

I don't currently use straight talk, but I know tons of people who use them with tons of dffrent and nice phones that love their service. I do however have a wal mart mobile(I think that's right) sim card I pop in my old 4S and use in my Rezound quite frequently and have 0 complaints about their service. May not be much help but as I stated I know and have personally worked on many peoples phone to get them up and running on straight talk and all of them love it.

Have any of your friends said anything about Straight Talk monitoring their data usage? I have never used more then 3GB per month so never had an issue with AT&T, but according to some stories I read Straight Talk is in a habit of simply disconnecting people's service without a warning.

Straight talk has a data cap/policy that's nebulous at best.
If you, really want an AT&T mvno, I use a RedPocket SIM in my One X. It's 59.99$ a month, unlimited talk, text and 2gb data. 56.99$ if you use www.callingmart.com and buy your refill from there.
T-Mobile has an, online only plan for 30$ a month that includes 100 min, unl sms, and 5gb data. While 100 min may not be enough, some have found grooveip with google voice a viable option for calls.

How to get Unlimited Data on AT&T

I'm just transferring this thread from the Atrix forum for those that would be interested in getting onto (or back onto) AT&T's unlimited data plan rather than the tiered plans they offer.
It requires an IPhone 2G in order to do it and a sim card that has not been previously registered on an IPhone.
It does work, I did it on my own lines with ease.

I have a friend that does that...you send him $$ and your login info..he sends you back a sim with unlimited data
AT&T's policies do allow anyone with an unlimited plan to keep their unlimited data when moving to a different smartphone, so if any rep says otherwise, then tell them to look it up in their reference material, called myCSP......just a little inside info

Just throwing this out there, starting this month they will be throttling data speeds if you go over 2GB on the unlimited data plans. You can go over but it will be sloooow.

Hey, I was just wondering, does it have to be an unactivated sim card that's never been used on a 2g.. or does it just have to be a sim card that hasn't been
used on a 2g phone..
and i have an old 2g phone, it lights up but you can't really go into anything on it.. basically a black screen just lit up.. it's recognized in itunes too..

since at&t counts data in bytes,
it would make sense that your speed would lower after 20001 bytes, right?

I have no idea but are you still tethering? Like as in are you still tethering hours later? If so, you might want to watch how much you're tethering. If you push it too far, AT&T can find out and put you on a tethering plan.
Right now I'm on Sprint and would like to move over to AT&T but like most of you want unlimited data. If I switch I will get 3 lines (family plan) 2 iphone 4s's for my two sisters and 1 Samsung Skyrocket for me. Anyone know if its possible for us to get unlimited data?

Verizon to kill unlimited plans for existing customers

Have you guys seen this? Doesn't totally surprise me. I figured it would happen sooner or later. Still makes me sad though.

as soon as it happens, I'm cancelling my contract (since they violated the TOS), and jumping ship to an MNVO.
I don't mind not having unlimited data so as far as my bill reflects that.

I don't know if they would be violating the TOS. I'm pretty sure the contracts that we all signed gave them the right to change any damn thing they want, whenever they want to.
This move has probably been planne for since 4g was a but a twinkle in their eye.
I'm pretty sure we'll have to wait out our "upgraded" contracts until the original end dates. And they're betting that by then, we'll have gotten used to the "upgrades."
I just love that have the nuts to call this an upgrade. Freaking hilarious.
well from what ive read, it's for customers with a 3G phone going to a 4G phone. I think if you don't upgrade from them you should be able to keep it. Looks like if the Nexus line expands and is sold through the google play store, im buying my phones straight from google

that how i'm reading it too, it doesn't sound like i will be required to change my data plan until i upgrade again.
The way it will likely work is that as 3G unlimited contracts expire, Verizon will push subscribers to upgrade their devices to smartphones on company's 4G LTE network. These customers will then have to sign up for the data share plans.

Probably. But that's the velvet glove. Do we know anything about the iron hand inside? If Verizon's spiel is "Upgrade to 4G LTE" and the customer's response is "No thanks", will Verizon counter with "Upgrade to LTE or else find another provider"?
The mindset I'm sensing behind killing off grandfathered unlimited is that they want all of their customers capped, and if you won't be capped, you won't be their customer. They're playing chicken, and most of their affected customer base will be the first to flinch.

Yeah, looks like they've opened a loophole in their plan. You lose your grandfathered unlimited if you buy a subsidized new phone (i.e., renew contract). So, if you craigslist or ebay a phone, and convince Verizon to activate it, you'll keep the unlimited data. (Or, if you like giving money to Verizon, buy the phone new from them.)
Interesting. I wonder how many upgrading customers who want the new-new shiny and don't pay much attention to contract plan dynamics will miss that distinction and lose their unlimited access without fully realizing it?
Yup im switching to tmobile! This is such bs!! Tmobile will b the only carrier left with "unlimited" data, after verizon pulls this stunt!!! Oh well, tmobile @ least has the one series phones. Suck it verizon!!

This will be my last carrier phone

I don't know if you guys saw the news but I was looking forward to AT&T adding family data plans in hopes I'd save some cash. Well they announced them today and it's a nightmare. Currently I'm paying $50 for 2 gigs per line, total 4. Under AT&Ts new plan I'd have to pay $85 a month for 1 gig! They aren't making you switch but still wtf?
I'm sick of carriers and carrier phones. I love my vivid but can't deny the fact that with the new features of ICS came new bugs, and it's looking like we're left for dead. The Vivid is hitting eol status on some carriers, and it came out after the Google flagship! And I hate seeing that ugly at&t logo. Freaking ruining the looks of my phone pasted dead center on the bottom of the front. And they lock these phones down so much that hacking them is getting harder to impossible! A couple years ago CyanogenMod was a safe bet but due to ril issues we sure don't have that option.
Updates are only going to get worse. I'm at the point now where if it doesn't have a Nexus in the brand name I can't recommend it. Android phones are slowly but surely becoming the new feature phones. And every device I've had, updates brought new issues with them and the carriers never released any updates to fix those issues. You shouldn't have to root your phone to take care of them!
So for the half assed treatment we get for buying the carrier phones what do we get in return from them? Higher rates with excuses. They claim "due to the high costs of today's smartphone" ah save it! My old Samsung Eternity dumb phone was $450 off contract, a Galaxy Nexus is $350 so how do smartphone costs have anything do do with their nickle and diming? Why does my insurance deductible cost $120 now when my old eternity was only $50 and costs the same amount?
But you know what? When your contract is up or if you own your own phone you don't save anything. So how do smartphone costs have anything to do then? I should get a discount if I choose to not subsidize my phone but nope that's not how they roll.
I don't plan on getting rid of this phone anytime but I may after the next Nexus is announced. I'll see how I like it then. At any rate I'll continue to be an AT&T customer until March of 2014 and then at that point I'll be taking whatever phone I have to a no contract low cost option. I'm sick of carriers and sick of their phones too.

I used a non-carrier phone for the last year, as well as a carrier-based phone. I had planned to switch to virgin mobile, and bought an LG smartphone. I set it up with Google Voice and Groove IP for calling, rooted it with no worries, loaded it up with free apps and the latest ROMs. It did a great job with email, texting, internet, all the same stuff we do on our Vivids. The only down side was the occasional lack of WiFi. If WiFi is e easy to get to, it is a nice way to go. I got a kick out of showing people my android phone running ice cream sandwich and telling them I paid 0 per month.

BTW I'm not ripping on the vivid so much as the carrier. I like my phone but I almost regret it just because I'm financially obligated to at&t till 2015 now. I really feel like for a measly 4 gigs on 2 lines. I'm already paying too much and I was hoping with maybe a little relief with shared plans and they totally blow. I really don't get how it's "shared" with a per line fee. Total lunacy! You'd have to be insane to switch.
The phone I don't regret, the upgrade that required 2 more years of service I regret if that makes sense.

Yeah the nexus has T-mobile and AT&T bands for fake 4G, thats what sucks about carrier phones lol. you really can't take them anywhere else. AT&T and T-mobile phones are interchangeable except for the 3G bands, thats pretty much the main difference. So if you get a T-mobile phone it won't work on AT&T's 3G network, and AT&T's 3G phones won't work on T-mobile's 3G network.
I remember the Nexus one Google actually made 2 versions of it because of the bands, but the Galaxy nexus has all GSM bands, which is nice
I work at a junior college with two campuses. One of them is kind of up in the hills, and the *only* signal they get is AT&T, so I am pretty much stuck with that until my job changes. I've been paying about $70/month for two dumb phones, just upped my bill by $30 (minus my discount) for the Vivid. I'm not complaining, but my daughter is moving out and wants to bail on AT&T entirely, probably go Virgin Mobile no contract. That is still the cheapest I have found.

Yeah that's typical of college campuses. I remember my brother had to get Verizon when he went to ball state because no other carrier could get a signal there. My issue with virgin is they run on Sprints network which is cdma and with cdma you pretty much are buying a phone that only works on one network.
Straight Talk seems like the best deal from what I've seen because you basically can get any carriers service without going through the carrier. The Android phones they sell run on sprints network but many people on xda have bought unlocked nexuses and basically gotten service through AT&T without the at&t hassle
See only tmobile does it right in that if you own your phone you save money. If subsiding the phones really are costing at&t and Verizon that much then both should offer discounts or better plans for those who have their own phones and don't opt to bite on early upgrades etc.
Either way I'm stuck with at&t till March of 2014 so I went ahead and grabbed the 3 gig data plan before it goes away in August. Me and my wife were both on the 2 gigs for $25 each plan. In February they killed that plan off in favor of a 3 gig for $30 plan. I kept both our plans at the time as I hadn't yet discovered Google Music and had a hard time even using a gig but now with slacker and Google I'm having to constantly monitor my data and still find myself rationing the last few days of my billing cycle with only 250 megs remaining. The extra gig is just enough really to not have to worry about it. Figure get it now before they do away with it in august!

I'm selling my Vivid. I've only had it two months, but I need the cash to finance new Galaxy Nexus I got this week. The Nexus is wide open to development and has a thriving (mostly positive) community. AT&T really hobbled the Vivid, which could have been so much more. Whether that's the reason for the negativity surrounding this phone, I don't know, but I don't see myself going back to a carrier phone again.
I like HTC phones, though. I wish it was somehow possible to magically merge the Nexus guts with the Vivid's case and screen. Maybe someday HTC will make a Nexus for Google.

Yeah I do think all the security hurdles cause mysterious issues in roms, then the average xda member gets mad at the developers for not fixing the issues, then the developer snaps back, then mods get involved and the developer gets banned, then the members are like wtf, they get mad back and next thing you know the whole community is in disarray!
At least that's my thoughts.

I actually wanted a nexus. I was hoping at&t would announce it on contract and I got sick of waiting. Me and my wife were both tired of our lagtivates, and I talked to at&t about early upgrades and got me and my wife both Vivid's. And I swear right after my 30 days Google announced the nexus for 400 bucks on the play store. The word I said when I saw the article started with f and was 4 letters long.
That being said I don't hate the phone its fast, and has a kick ass camera but I also thought I wouldn't be interested in flashing custom roms if I had a nice enough phone. No other way to sum it up than saying this is not a developers phone and in those regards I do regret it a bit, however if I really wanted to get a nexus, well a vivid is worth more than a Captivate ebay anyway.
Other than battery life I got no complaints

You must be on an olllld contract. On newer plans, if they discover you have a smartphone on a "dumb phone" plan, they'll "upgrade" you into the most expensive data plan. AT&T did that to my wife when I dropped her SIM into an old iPhone. She was happy to use it as Wi-Fi only, but got a text saying they discovered the change and were changing her plan.
I fought with all four carriers about this. None of them will sell you a smartphone anymore without forcing you into a data plan. They claim that people were buying smartphones without data plans, and then complaining when they got charged for using data. Jerks.
The only thing I like about buying phones on carrier is that they are piss cheap, and I have trouble justifying 4x the cost for a phone from overseas.

I think carriers subsiding days are numbered honestly, largely thanks to Google and the cheap tablet wars, as cell phone hardware is getting cheap and then Verizon wants to sell you a locked down Motorola that takes a year to get an update for $300 on contract, but you can get a nexus, have your updates instantly and only pay $50 more! It's not just the nexus that's cheap either, that new sexy Motorola Atrix HD is only $450 no commitment. I mean if you absolutely have to have a gs3 or one x yeah subsiding is your best bet but there are quickly becoming a alot of good phones for $350 to $500.
I'm ready for it to end. If subsiding ends and people start wanting to hold on to their phones, manufacturers will make less phones, and support them better. I can't fault any manufacturer right now for not having jelly bean as without source they can't do anything, but 6 months to a year is a bit much and to stop supporting a phone like ours when it's only been out like 8 months, but I'm tied to it for at least 18 months, well that's just lunacy!

I find it ridiculous how a lot of the phones are made to barely even last through 6 months of light use, and you end up having to 1) Cheat the company out of a replacement. or 2) Pay for another phone without the contract discount, and still be stuck with that company. Straight Talk looks really really appealing, I've been dying for a good enough reason to sell my Vivid, and go Galaxy Nexus and being able to switch from at&t to a cheaper/better alternative whenever I want without buying a new phone would be great.

Why is no one discussing Simple Mobile? - UPDATED W/MY EXPERIENCE SO FAR

I'm curious why no one discusses Simple Mobile as an option for their new Nexus 4? Just like Straight Talk, Simple Mobile is owned by TracFone, and uses T-Mobile towers. I've also read on other forums that they are no as strict about their data usage as Straight Talk is. I know Simple Mobile used to be their own thing until earlier this year when acquired by TracFone.

im currently using T-Mo with the Nexus 4, id like to use one of the ones mentioned above but, id like to find out ahead of time what would the download speed of the 4G would look like .
right now im getting atleast 9-12Mgps here in NYC, soon will be moving to DALLAS TX in the next day .
so yeah
Simple caps you right at 2gb. And if you tether for more than an hour or so you get a warning. And they're customer service is terrible. Better off just paying the extra $10 a month for the tmo prepaid, at least you get voice/text roaming with them

TRUE,
Thought straight talk in the US has unlimited everything at $45 a month .
but the data is shared i guess whatever that mean . .
they also tell you that if they feel like you are using too much 4g bandwith, they have the right to slow your speed down, who knows how !
It's because straight talk basically has the same plan for $5 cheaper.
I looked into it and decided to stick with T mobile value plans. For two lines it wasn't much more than the other stuff.
I did a lot of searching and saw data cap talk after 2gb and other things so I decided not worth the hassle to save a couple of bucks.
nypions cke
Im using Straight Talk and for $41.50 a month I could not be more satisfied. So far I'm LOVING the service
I'll be using it with Simple. I have heard that they have severe caps in the 2-3GB range, but I don't use much data (<1GB) so I haven't experienced a hard cap. Also, they've recently included 250MB at "4G" before they throttle down to "3G." I use quotes because the speeds are laughable. For "4G" down, I get around 3Mb/s. For 3G down, it's around 300Kb/s. I can't complain since data isn't a huge deal for me, but it is for most people. But at $40/month, this isn't too bad.
9nly reason why I stay with Simple Mobile is because of the free internatinal texting. Their data speeds arent all that great but I am always mostly on wifi.

Hmmm never heard of it. Guess it's not a UK thing then?

I'm curious why no one discusses Simple Mobile as an option for their new Nexus 4? Just like Straight Talk, Simple Mobile is owned by TracFone, and uses T-Mobile towers. I've also read on other forums that they are no as strict about their data usage as Straight Talk is. I know Simple Mobile used to be their own thing until earlier this year when acquired by TracFone.
Here's their website: http://www.mysimplemobile.com/

Do you know if they have rollover minutes like Tracfone?
Well, I've never used them personally. I just knew they were an option, and I wondered why people never mention them.
As for data speeds, it would be the same as on T-Mobile.
On capping, I heard that Straight Talk was more strict on that than Simple Mobile is. I read somewhere that Simple Mobile used to be hardcore about capping you at a certain point, but since they were purchased by TracFone, it all changed. Again, this is what I've read, and it could be totally wrong.
Simplemobile, I had them fly almost 2 years. Supposedly they have no cap but they showed me the rules where it says they can sit you down any time your usage is effecting others.
I am dumping them for tmob $30 prepaid. With simple I could not get PayPal notifications or Google. it is something with those short numbers. Ticked me off many times.
They use tmobile as a carrier

Yeah, but basically every carrier in the US with an "Unlimited" data option has that clause in their user agreement. I'm currently with Boost Mobile, and I think that they term it as "fair use". Either way, with my current data speeds, and my crummy phone, I would have to try incredibly hard to even hit 1gb a month compared to how much I use now. I would be surprised if I even break 250mb as it currently stands.

No. They don't. It's unlimited.

It's not the same as T-Mobile. Even though they're using the same towers, Simple actually throttles more.

well in 50 plan i get 7-21 mp on my galaxy nexus is better than straighttalk you cant even stream nothing there i used like around 3gb a month
Straightalk is far from unlimited data...they usually cap you around 2-3 gigs. T-Mobile Simple plan does that around 5 gigs from what I understand. Straightalk is not a good option for data users...good for talkers though.

I went with the $60 Monthly 4G plan from TMo... because over the past two years I have averaged about 1.1 GBs of data on Verizon (I switch to WiFi whenever I can) + the free roaming on TMo.
Additionally, I have used TMo before, and had a good experience... so went back to them.
If anything, I would like to switch to the $30 Monthly 4G plan... and try VOIP... I think that is best route for a value customer (or a customer who doesn't want to get butt raped by greedy carriers)

That's not true. Just because they use T-mobile doesn't mean the speeds are the same.

Nexus 5 Straight Talk (AT&T) Thread

So it looks like pretty much every other prepaid carrier has its own thread so I thought I'd start one for the Straight Talk folks. I picked up my N5 a little over a week ago and switched both my wife and I (also has an N5) from Sprint. We'd been with them for a little over 9 years but in their LTE migration here in Portland their coverage went from decent to terrible. Thus far I'm very happy with the AT&T service, speed is good, cost is AWESOME, and I can tether without root so I retain work email functionality. I'm very pleased with the decision to dump Sprint and couldn't be happier with the N5!
With my ATT phone I could not tether unless I went to the high Gb plan. The unlocked Nexus, as you found, lets you do it out of the box.

I did the same. Jumped ship from Sprint and went to Straight Talk, mainly because of the savings and Sprints bogus 3G & WiMax 4G. Tried t-mobiles $30 plan but the cell reception in my area was worse than what i had with Sprint. I was skeptical about going back to At&t as I had them before i had Sprint and was getting charged way more than i should have been paying for one line. I went with Straight Talk At&t and i have LTE coverage, a very reasonable phone bill, and no worries about extra charges. Definitely recommend to anyone whos looking for a reasonable bill and doesnt have good t-mobile coverage.
Me and two of my friends got nexus 5s and att st Sims and two of us networks say home. The other says at&t -_- good service none the less.

Mine says home. It has said that for the past two years that I have been with them. Its not a big deal.

Anyone able to get the Portable Wi-Fi hotspot to work? I have seen threads where the N5 and T-Mobile users has gotten it to work but none for the ST ATT users.
I dropped Sprint with another six months left on my contract, so it will cost me about $120 in fees, but it's worth it. I'll save almost $ 40 a month, so after just three months the ETF would have been paid off, and I really start saving.
I'm very happy with Straight Talk AT&T. I have superior data speeds, and my calls are clear with no drops.
My mobile hotspot works, too.
I've used a few different pre paid plans the last few years but none of them have been this good. At first I went for the cheapest plan but with low minutes thinking I would use voip or something but I would get extra charges.
Only thing I've worried about with this plan is data limits, but they cleared that up with an actual limit now. I don't really download that much anyways and have a lot of Wi-Fi access.

Absolutely. I downloaded FoxFI but it looks like it's unnecessary.
I'm quite happy with att st for the most part (Salem Oregon). Tmobile data speeds are 2 to 3x faster, but limited service in doors of course.
The one problem I've had with strait talk that I've seen others confirm is the push delay. After an unknown amount of time of inactivity (usually a few minutes) the Google services port on st closes and you won't get new emails or hangouts ect until you refresh or the Google heart beat refreshes (up to 28 minutes).
Fortunately there's an app that lets you manually change the Google push ping to keep it alive. So I'm usually not more than 2 minutes behind on hangouts.

What are some of yall using for the hotspot feature?

If your on a custom Rom then the native hotspot works without any problem. Although alot of people use FoxFi.

I've used FoxFi and that seems to enable the factory hotspot. In any case it works.
One thing hardly anyone is mentioning is that Straight Talk cripples video streaming on 4G and LTE. Watching YouTube videos is pretty useless unless you switch to 3G which is still pretty crappy. Another thing is that MMS can be hit or miss on Straight Talk. Sometimes its fine and other times it won't work.

I am rooted and have tried FoxFi, the native Hotspot and neither work. It connects but won't let any data pass through.
I did my first month on the Nexus 5 with Straight talk, really have no complaints at all. AT&T's coverage is not anywhere near as good as Verizon, but it's damn well better than Sprint or T Mobile. I left straight talk for h2o Wireless as there's very little LTE out here with AT&T anyways. The data cap was just too small on straight talk.
H20 wireless $60 a month fit unlimited everything, no throttling.

I have read that H2O throttles that $60 plan after 3GB.
I am glad someone started an att straight talk thread. Can anyone with a VPN tell me if it works with att straight talk? I use a pretty common VPN provider which works no problem on WIFI but has very frequent dis-connects while on mobile. It is pretty much unusable while on mobile.
Yeah so I've heard they throttle.
The way I figure it. Att is best in my area.
45$ a month for unlim text. Minutes. And 2.5gb data. Is still cheaper then if I wanted to go sign a contract with att for service. I'd have capped minutes. Maybe unlimited text. And 2gb data. Not even unlimited with slow speeds...
So I get an extra 500mb. Free mins. And such. And its cheaper and no contract..
And I haven't found anything better yet.
