[Q] Noob - stop SGN talking to me? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got my SGN yesterday and it duely upgraded itself out of the box - so I'm running ICS - although it doesn't look like ICS on my tablet?
I've clearly set something - because my SMS messages are now talking to me - as are my appointments. Its getting embarrassing. Other than turning the volume down - where should I switch this off!
Sorry -noob question!
Graham

Turn off TalkBack.
Settings>Accessibility>Talkback

Nope - that's switched off - although I now know about loads of other features I don't want to use either! Thx for trying though.

Settings/language and input/text to speech
Might be switched on... I was laughing when I read your post just thinking how awkward that could be

Thanks for this "Driving Mode" was enabled in the Text-to-speech output section. Thankfully everything seems quiet now! I don't remember switching this on - so either my dementia is kicking in or maybe one of the map apps I've been looking at did it. Thanks again.
G.

Driving mode is activated by charging cable being inserted under certain conditions. It has been known that if the micro USB port on the note gets dirty, this can trigger driving mode to be activated automatically when not plugged in. Keep an eye on it, if it keeps happening, gently clean the USB port with some alcohol and a cotton bud.

[Q] HS U350 Headset

Running Pongster's HyperDroid GBXv5.0 in NAND.
Bought myself a HS U350 headset cable. Making calls is fine, but the lock screen (off) button doubles as hang-up. If I try to shut off the screen to put it my pocket, I actually just hang-up. I'm sure this is a total noob question, but I can't for the life of me work out a way around it.
Maybe not such a noob question ... or the wrong forum perhaps?
Having used the hands free for a bit longer, I now notice that if I answer a call, the screen switches off, but if I make a call it doesn't. Am also getting the same problem when using the integrated Bluetooth system in my car.
My current work around is using the Cleaner app to simply shows a blank wallpaper. Not great for batter life though Can't seem to find a app/widget to switch off the sceen
Could someone else using an HD2 Android confirm if they do or do not not experience the same behaviour please? I'm wondering if it's a ROM or install issue. Cheers!
---Edit---
Ha ha, knew as soon as I posted this I'd find something to help. In my settings, under interface, notification - widget buttons, there is an option sleep. At least this gives me a decent manual work around

Galaxy note turns car mode by itself

Hi guys. My galaxy note turns car mode by itself randomly and its irritating. I even tried to stop in the settings. Freezed it. What is the problem and how can I deal with it? I tried moving to different ROMs but its still the same.

Im, having the same issue, car mode goes on and off, is so anoying, i updated to the latest rom and the problem still, you can deactivate gps and it still will be there very irritating really, any idea of how to fix it?
Had the same problem. Was a hardware issue at the USB port. I got a new note. Good luck

I Hade the same problem, perheps i kill it whith Titanium Backup now is ok for me, i use it not so really.
fixed
Now then guys, i realiwe this is a bit of a dead thread but thought this might be useful to others with the problem. The problem is caused by a dodgy micro usb socket. First thing to try is cleaning the socket. I used isopropyl alcohol on a toothbrush. If that doesnt work (didnt for me) and you dont mind losing the dock function completely you can use nodock from play store. You need root, but this deactivates the function at kernel level. Ive gone from losing20% battery per hour and being woken up by the incessant charging not charging beeps to perfect functionality and a battery consumption of 1.5 - 2% per hour. For information i was quoted 35 quid for engineer to replace the socket.
Hope this helps someone!

[Q] Alarm doesn't work while phone is off ?

Hi,
Set the alarm at 7:00AM and switched the phone off to save battery. the alarm didn't work. tried again and again. simply doesn't work !!
what is this ?
Thanks guys
What do you mean you switch off? Do you lock it or turn it off. Because if you turn off your phone the alarm will not work.

I meant while the mobile is turned off ! no way to turn on the alarm while the mobile is turned off.. I thought it's simple task available in most cheap mobiles though !

Looks like you need to choose, or to wake up or save battery...
No, the alarm doesn't work with the phone OFF
What phone do you have? There could be other issues so let's get all the facts first.

Another "iPhone doesn't have it, so it's not needed" feature, I guess.. :/ too bad, really. It's not extremely difficult to implement a function like that. Or implement something like a standby mode that can be woken up by some system command. Such as an alarm, a preset sync event to a calendar update, an event on a calendar.. Could make the device sleep again after checking as well. Say you'd wake it up every once in a while to check for missed calls (if.. service providers would have ever implemented something like that - you could maybe even let your phone be woken up by a call.. if a system start would take five-ten seconds, connecting through would work), or receive unfetched messages or e-mail from the network, that sort of thing.

Firstly, this is a QUESTION and should be in the Q&A forum. But anyhoo...
I'm not sure if the OP and a couple of the other posters are trolling or just being deliberately obtuse. Do you REALLY expect your alarm to work when you turn your phone OFF? I know, back in the day some of the simple phones would support this, but it was implemented in hardware. Your phone now requires Android to run - not going to happen when it's turned off.
I want my phone on all the time so people can contact me if they need to. At night it goes into Quiet Hours, so only a phone call or alarm will disturb me. It also only uses about 7% battery overnight, so I can't see the problem with that at all.
As for the comments about the phone waking itself up periodically tipi check on things, that means that it can't actually be fully turned off, and also that will use battery in the first place.
I'm still not sure if I'm being trolled or not... :banghead:
lol. Yeah, back in the day most phones had a function like that. ..pretty much all laptops actually have the same thing, but no one actually use it for anything. Wake from lan-poll, wake from activity on system-bus, wake on software counter. Practically all chipsets have that from ARM boards to the latest desktop motherboards. Different depths of sleep states makes it pretty easy to do implement any amount of functions from that.
The "hardware" poll isn't a whole bunch more complicated than preserving the clock when turning the power off. All phones do that.. keep the clock from stopping after you hit the power.. and literally all phones have a soft switch to turn the phone from that "standby" state to power on state. And that switch can be triggered by a routine on some cmos clock+ module. It's not complicated. For all we know it could be there on the chipset already, it just didn't seem very appealing to anyone to program an app in Android to communicate somehow with the hardware layer outside the Android interfaces.
..I don't know. I have this feeling that in 20 years, when people are asked to program something and the Microsoft tools break - then people can't do it. "Original Code" becomes a religious object that people worship and call the divine wisdom of God, and things like that.. And no, you're not being trolled.

Random vibrations on cradle

Hi
I've been getting random vibrations from G watch R when it's sitting charging on the crade. Has anyone else come across this or know how to stop it.

My G Watch R didn't behave like this. Sure it vibrates when receiving notifications and when it is correctly connected to the crade.
Maybe your contacts are covered by something?
Found out from another source that LG Watch doesn't like charging from a USB Hub when hub is being used by another device.
At the the moment I am using a charging dock with my Sony Z Ultra and using the USB pass thru on that to power the watch dock.
I will try pluging the watch charging dock directly into the mains charger tonight and report the results tomorrow.

Tried plugging it directly into mains charger. Never heard any vibrations all night. Looks like using a USB hub is going to be a no no.

This is by design and indicates when the watch connects/disconnects to/from the phone. When it connects to the phone, it vibrates once; when it disconnects, it vibrates twice.
If you reboot your phone, the watch will vibrate twice when the phone's Bluetooth turns off and once when it turns back on. Or when you leave the watch on the cradle and walk away from it with your phone far enough to lose the Bluetooth connection, it will vibrate twice to let you know it disconnected from the phone. When you get back within range, it will vibrate once to let you know it reconnected to the phone.

You posted this reply on another subject. I am pointing out that apart from disconnecting, loosing signal etc ( these are not random but as you point out these are by design) that there is another reason for random vibrations. Doing as I stated above cured it for me and several others on another forum.

Just scratch the metal contacts on the back of the watch with a pencil and issue resolved. The graphite of the pencil will help a lot.

My phone vibrates for no 'reason'

Greetings all,
I have a new Note5 and overall I like it.
As you might expect I have been working feverishly to find up to date app solutions for my usage model and that will work on an unrooted device. I despise all that conspire to force this upon us! Anyway I have been testing loads of apps and somewhere along the way something has been set to vibrate to indicate something. It is happening at fairly random intervals and nothing shows on screen or in the pull down that accounts for it.
I have looked for events that are pending, past due, etc. I don't get many texts. So, it isn't that. I have even turned on airplane mode which should prevent any kind of updaes or pushes that might trigger an notice.I have checked all of the apps I am using and none are set to vibrate only. From the initial turn on of this phone I have run package disabler pro for Samsung. Using a basic list from this xda thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/note5/general/guide-bloating-touchwizzing-note-5-t3184563. I have restarted the phone several times as well
Can anyone suggest some kind of system monitor/logging app that I can load that will allow me to find out which application is triggering this? Is there some other way I can find out what is triggering this event? I expect that a logging app will eat battery more but on a temp basis that would be ok.
Thanks all and here's to someone finding a way for us to root our notes without messing up our warranty and secure payment...

If you are talking about how it vibrates when you first pick it up for seemingly no reason, then that's a feature. It's to let you know you have notifications. It's called smart alert, you can disable it in the gestures menu.
vibrate (and sound) for 'no reason'
Thanks _MetalHead_
But no. This happens when it is sitting undisturbed. I will check and turn off that feature if it isnt already so it isnt adding to the confusion.
If I didnt say, I find no idication of active alarms or notifications.
P
Do you have any Bluetooth devices connected? I had a smart watch with my S5. Every time it connected or disconnected, the phone would vibrate. This was especially annoying when I left the watch in the bedroom while sitting in the living room with my phone. Every few minutes it would connect/disconnect and the phone would vibrate.

Not clear if this is contributing. Will turn BT off to be certain.
Actually, I think I can say for certain no. This has happened in airplane mode.
That is why I am looking for a system logging application or some equivalent method.

Yeah, I re-read your OP, and noticed you said it was happening in airplane mode.
The S-Pen suggestion above seems worth pursuing.
Good luck!
I have the same problem. It would just randomly vibrate. I think is something to do with Google notifications.
