Just got my Note N7000 today (my 1st smart phone) an so my ignorance of the terminology is so great it may be hopeless, but now that I bought it I have to stumble thru it somehow. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that one could get 3G data access with AirVoice (as well as other at&t MVNOs) so I purchased their sim card and $10 airtime plan (4 cents per minute voice 2 cents per message, and 33 cents per megabyte data). When my Note arrived I slipped the sim card in and Viola! ... I could instantly make and receive voice calls (no phone setup needed). For data however it seems like lots of setup is required.
For my first attempt I stumbled on this app called "tweakker" that claims to do all the setup for you. So I ran it, selected "AirVoice" and after a 60 second test it says: "You do not have ..." This might be a useful message telling me what I need to have but unfortunately I can't read it! It is covered up by a white box containing the message "Something is wrong. We could not connect you to the internet via your operator". So it seems tweakker can't do it for me.
So then I went to the phone instructions at the AirVoice web site:
http://www.airvoicewireless.com/PhoneSupportGeneralDataSettings.aspx
The automated "Over the Air" setup method appears to work by receiving some messages sent by AirVoice, so I called AirVoice support and they tried to help me. They sent the first required message several times. Each time I saw a notification on my phone that said that this transaction costs $.02 (which is what my plan claims it should cost) but I don't actually see this message. Perhaps it is just because I don't know how to receive a message, but I didn't see anything that looked like it could be a notification of a message and when I selected the "Messaging" icon, I didn't see any messages. Tech support also had me turn off my phone while the message was being sent, but that didn't seem to make any difference. She put me on hold but I soon was disconnected and by the time I called back the support desk had closed for the day.
So then I went to their manual setup information, but this is where I ran headlong into my terminology gap. For instance under "General Settings for Internet & MMS" in says "WAP Homepage URL = http://www.avmobileweb.com" but I don't know where I enter this in the phone. Same problem with the "MMS URL" and the "MMS APN".
Then on the phone under settings, Mobile networks I checked "Use packet data" and unchecked "Data roaming". Is that correct?
Then under "Network mode" I selected "Auto" and under Network operators it said "Searching ..." and then listed "AIRVOICE WIRLESS" twice but when I click on either of those it times out after a minute of trying to register the service. But if I hit "Select automatically" it says "Registered on network". This would seem to imply success, but then if I disable wireless and go to the browser it says "No network connection" and tells me to check my settings.
So then I went back to the mobile network settings, clicked on "Access Point Names" and tried to set up the APN. I entered:
Name = "Airvoice Web"
APN = "att.mvno"
Proxy = "66.209.11.33"
Port = "80"
Username = <Not set>
Password = <Not set>
Server = <Not set>
MMSC = <Not set>
MMS proxy = "http://mmsc.cingular.com"
MMS port = 80
MCC = 310
MNC = 410
Authentication type = <Not set>
APN type = internet+mms
Then I hit "save" ... but this still didn't seem to get me connected.
Although in truth I would have been quite surprised if it did since many of my responses above were guesses based on the information AirVoice provided, plust some data they gave me (such as WAP Homepage URL, and MMS Access Name) I couldn't figure out where to enter.
Also the next section "WAP Browser Settings" I couldn't complete at all because at step 4 it says "Select Browser Settings" but I could find no such selection. So I wasn't able to enter any of the data in the WAP browser settings.
So after spending 4 hours on this and not feeling I'm remotely close to success, I'm wondering does everybody have to go thru a similar learning curve, or do I just have a knack for doing the wrong thing. If I call back the Airvoice tech support person tomorrow, is there any chance of success or is my knowledge gap still to great. Or if there is some reason I'm trying to do something that can't be done, please put me out of my misery now.
The other thing I thought of is going to an AirVoice store, but the nearest one is 20 miles away and before doing that I can't do it myself and that it is indeed possible for a more knowledgable person to get this to work. Also would the person at the store would know how to do it. (They handle several networks, so who knows how expert they are in this kind of thing).
Sorry for the very long message, but I had no idea how to describe my problem in a concise way. Thanks in advance if you have any suggestions.

Just thought I should follow up in case someone thinking about buying the international version gets worried by threads such as this one. It turns out customer support at Airvoice was able to tell me exactly what settings to put into my phone (even though the information on their web site was slightly out of date). Then the support person says "ok, now turn off your phone". So not knowing any better I hit the power switch, which just turns off the display. (I think it might have been better for her to say that I should "reboot"). So I still could not get a data connection. Then customer support just punted and said "oh well, you have the international version which isn't really supported". That's annoying, but I guess that is a cop out that they can use. An hour or so after hanging up I did a reboot for no particular reason ... and bingo. Everything worked as expected! Actually, at first I only got 2G but after fiddling with the settings for a while I got 3G to work. I would tell you what I did to make it work if I could remember

Hi all,
I have a question to those more knowledgeable about GSM network/settings (I come from a CDMA background). I bought my girlfriend a Captivate on EBay for Christmas; everything is working OK except it cannot get any signal. As far as I know everything is set up as it should, it just won't show any bars. While using the ServiceMode app [*#0011#] it goes from NO SERVICE to GSM : LIMITED and back over and over. While using her old phone in the same spot it has full bars. We went to the ATT store and made sure everything was set up on their end. I think the phone is defective but I figured I would check here first. I'll attach some relevant (I think) screen caps and if anything jumps out or you have anything for me to try and fix this, please let me know.
edit/
Also does anyone know the exact location of the internal antenna? I opened the phone up to see if something came lose during shipment or whatever and I didn't really get anywhere. I wanted to try and jury rig a extended antenna to see if that helped reception.
You flashed that ROM/theme on the phone? Or it came like that when you bought it?
That is Serendipity 5.1.. I figure while she can't use the phone as a phone, she should still benefit from a nice rom and kernel. When I received the phone originally it had the stock rom. Before I flashed a custom I made sure to check everything out first and the problem was there since the beginning. Since then I've flashed back to stock, tried different radios, etc etc but the results are always the same.
I don't know what the person before me did to the phone though, maybe he/she flashed something incorrectly and wrote over important settings? I don't know what I'm looking at that's really why I am asking here.
Grabbed some more settings, anything seem strange or wrong?
Stupid question, but do you have an active AT&T Sim card in the Phone? btw, these phones absolutely, positively will not work on Sprint or any other CDMA carrier.

Yes I have her new Sim card which was activated at the store over the weekend. I can switch it between her two phones, old one full bars, Captivate no bars.
Check you APN Settings. Menu> Wireless and networks > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names and let us know what they are, and we can go from there.
Says ATT WAP
Tap where is says att wap and check the settings to see if they match these:
Name: ATT WAP
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
Port: 80
Username:not set
Password:not set
Server: not set
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
mms port - 80
mcc 310
mnc 410
authentication type - none
apn type- internet + mms
If not, adjust them accordingly and see if it clears up. If not I'd say you have a serious hardware problem.
Those settings look good to me. Thanks for the help I suppose my problem is more serious. Anyone know of anything else I can check to maybe narrow my problem down? I'm not afraid to try and replace a radio/circuit board/internal antenna.
enter *#2263# and check that band selection is set to automatic.
Yep set to AUTOMATIC - Select GSM & WCDMA All Bands
Is there something equivalent to a PRL for GSM phones? Something that tells it what towers it can connect to?
idk if its related but i have poor signal problems too with my phone sometimes only shows bars and no h or edge and sometimes just says no service or emergency calls only
Yeah same here, right now it says Emergency calls only. I know for a fact that there are at least 6 GSM cell towers in this vicinity.
Can this issue have something to do with a failed unlocking attempt? I've been trying to research all routes and I tried to "unlock" to phone by using SGS Unlock Tool (rooted method), it was never successful. It states "Sorry, no codes found unknown error", possibly meaning that something internally is screwed up? I'm just pulling stuff out of my bum at this point. Any help will be appreciated!
Last bump for the weekend. Any suggestions? Already bought a new one but I still have 30 days to return it if I can figure out how to fix this.
Hi All,
Tried to search for this already but didn't find it.
I have an unlocked Captivate and am using it on the TMobile Network. I was originally on a $10 a month Data Plan but for some mysterious reason, I am no longer to get on the internet, nor send out any MMS. I am still able to receive MMS but just can't send any at all.
Any time I try to send a MMS, it sits on the "sending" status for about 15 min and then it finally just comes back to me with "failed".
I have been using this data plan on my phone for about 2.5 months now no problem and then a few days ago, it basically crapped out on me.
I have tried a few different APN settings:
Data Roaming is Checked
Access Point Name: t-mobile
APN: internet2.voicestream.com
MMSC: http://216.155.174.84/servlets/mms
APN Type: internet + mms
All others are not set
Access Point Name: t-mobile
APN: wap.voicestream.com
MMSC: http://216.155.174.84/servlets/mms
APN Type: internet + mms
All others are not set
and
Access Point Name: t-mobile
APN: epc.tmobile.com
MMSC: http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
APN Type: internet + mms
All others are not set
I would set one of them in the settings, restart the phone and try them. They now always default to the "web2go" upsale screen.
Before I always had it set to the internet2.voicestream.com settings and it worked great.
I tried calling TMobile and they are now telling me that the "system" has somehow figured out that I'm using an Android/Smartphone and isn't allowing me to use the $10 data plan anymore.
I don't understand how that is if every rep has had to ask me what phone I use, unless one of the times I called in, the rep entered that into the system and now they know?
Now they are saying the only way that I am able to send MMS now and or get on internet is if I upgrade to the 200mb/mo for $15 data plan or $30/mo for unlimited.
Can anyone verify this? That they somehow the System is able to see what kind of phone I use and if so... would I be able to trick the system somehow and use a non smartphone like an old nokia for a while and go online, etc... and then switch back to my captivate if it works?
I feel like they're just trying to upsell me and a bratty rep kicked me off moreso than the "System".
Call tmobile and ask, its open.source so.they shoukdnt do anything, they might be doing guess work about it though
sent from my rooted captivate
HI, I searched every Forum in the world I think, and I still haven't found an answer to my problem. I have two Motorola Atrix HDs that are ATT Branded but both are "Unlocked". We had them on Simple Mobile and never had a problem except for poor reception in our area (South eastern Florida). So after calling Straight Talk and them assuring us that the Atrix works on their system with NO Problems, we ordered two SIM Cards from them and ordered their 30 day unlimited service. They took almost 30 hours to port our numbers over, and told us that it could take as long as 72 hours. Anywho, I have tried to send/Rec'v MMS (Picture messages) and have not been able to do either. After spending HOURS on the phone with some geniuses from ST and changing the APN settings several times, nothing has changed. I have also emailed ST on several Forums and I get the same answer, That I need to set my APN as per their website and/or the Red activation card, Even though I tell them each and every time that I have tried all of them and nothing works, it seems to be their only answer.
Has anyone had this same issue and got it fixed? I don't and won't renew my service with ST if I can't use their service and get MMS. I have tried both APN settings they have given me. Below is the last email I got back from ST,
Remove the battery while the phone is "ON." Wait for 60 seconds, replace the battery, and then turn the phone back "ON." Your phone will display the message “Searching for Network." Please wait until the message disappears and then make a test call. Please check the APN settings below and follow these steps.
1. Press "Menu."
2. Select "Settings."
3. Select "Wireless & Networks."
4. Check that "Airplane mode" is unchecked and "Mobile network" is checked.
5. Select "Mobile Networks."
5. Select "Access Point Names."
6. Press "Menu."
7. Select “New APN.”
Enter the following information:
Select Name and enter Straight Talk
Press "OK"
Select APN and enter wap.tracfone
Press "OK"
Select Port and enter 8080
Press "OK"
Select MMSC and enter mms dot tracfone dot com
Press "Menu"
Select "Save"
I tried this as well and nothing. We have also tried the APN settings with the ATT.MVO thing and that didn't work either. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance to you all for your help.

Hi there, thanks for your reply, but as I said in my post, I tried that APN setting as well. It's crazy, Motorola nor ST will admit that there is an issue, and ST even told me to google this and see if I can find a solution. Isn't that nuts?
I hope someone can help, Like I said my phones are both unlock and are ATT Branded phones, but are unlocked, yet the APN settings ST gives everyone and the one listed above with the ATT.MVNO don't work. I get text messages but I can not send nor receive Picture messages. Good Gosh.. HELP Please. lol
Alright, after hours on the phone and resolving nothing with ting to fix my mms issues, I found a fix myself. Months later. They were thinking the Sim they sent me was "faulty" but was not as a family member has the same phone on ting with the same problem.
First to elaborate those who don't know what I'm talking about. If you have a Galaxy S5 that is factory unlocked, and go to ting for a network provider, chances are your mms either barely works, or doesn't at all. When it does work, it takes anywhere from 10 minutes to hours of pressing load again to send an image/video or receive. Location and signal do not change it from what I've noticed (All over Washington state)
The fix: I found that their setup instructions process was incorrect.
Theirs can be found here:
https://help.ting.com/hc/en-us/articles/205428698-GSM-Android-APN-Settings
Now, for the most part you should follow that but make a single adjustment. When you enter the first APN that it asks you to label "Ting Data", take the MMSC from "Ting MMS" and paste It in the MMSC box in the "Ting Data" APN you created first. The second I did that, everything was fixed. I left the MMS APN there just in case.
Long story short: Copy the MMSC under the "Ting MMS" APN the setup had you make, and paste it in the MMSC field they had you keep blank under "Ting Data" APN.
If any other providers have a similar activation setup for data who have a separate MMS field, try their provided MMSC in the one they have you keep blank.
Hope this helps anyone experiencing the pain.
This is solved.
The Phone Carrier found the solution and sent me a text.
As many others in many other places suspect, It is an APN issue. To me it looks like Samsung has made some assumptions about what the APN setting should be for different carriers and simply loads them in as part of the update. The sets the Network Operators to select automatically. Sometime this only gets close enough that the phone only makes call but not SMS or mms. sometimes SMS works too but many time the mms setting fail.
This is the USA solution for those using Straight Talk
Settings --> Mobile Networks --> Access Point Names -->> you should already have a Straight Talk
If you don't you will have to call the Tech Line for the complete list as this maybe somewhat device specific.
Change the following.
Name: Straight Talk
APN: RESELLER
PROXY: not set
PORT: not set
User name: not set
Password: not set
Server: not set
MMSC: http: //mmsc .mobile.att.net
MMS PROXY: proxy mobile. att. net
MMS PORT: 80
MCC: 310
MNC410
AUTH TYPE: not set
MMS APN TYPE: default.mms.supl
APN protocol: IPv4/IPv6
APN Roaming: IPv4/IPv6
Ok,
I did the OTA Update to Build Number MMB29K.T815YDVU2BPG5 ,,, Baseband version T815YDVU2BPE5 and mms has died.
Cannot send. If I try it takes 15-20 minutes for it to fail and give the failed message.
If I am sent an mms I get a message showing a download arrow and when I tap it, it takes about 5 minutes to get the "DOWNLOAD FAILED" message.
Things I have tried:
Checked APN setting with carrier. ---- They were correct
Deleted all other APN's from the system. ---- >> No CHANGE
Set APN protocol(s) to IPv4/IPv6 (carrier said it would be OK) ---->> NO CHANGE
Set Chrome to be the DEFAULT BROWSER ----->> NO CHANGE
Tried it in SAFE MODE ----->> still no mms send
The above should have done the next one but still tried the next one.
Deleted ALL other apps that had mms permissions--->> NO CHANGE
Things I have not tried:
Complete reset. Research says sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes it works for a few hours and then mms fails again. Really big hassle.
Trying to ROLL BACK. Nothing about this looks easy or something a person without pretty high level knowledge and skills and access to a really good computer should attempt. This is especially true since I have one of the more unusual versions. The SM-T815Y (GSM LTE with a SIM card) and none of the other variations that have full phone capability were supposed to be available in the USA. Info for any version that isn't GSM LTE is probably useless since the hardware will be different. I get no WARRANTY SERVICE from Samsung. Cannot even register it with them. To get the original OS I have to download from foreign sites with all the perils that involve.
Hoping some else has some ideas I haven't tried short of a master reset.
