Doing a Factory Reset. Need some help.

I want to do a factory reset but i also want to wipe the cache on the device.
Is it recommended to do it for a factory reset or just when you install a custom rom? I have found these instructions for a custom rom but its not clear to me if i can do it for a factory reset:
Install ROM (Sense UI, Cyanogen, etc)
1. Turn phone off -> Hold Volume Down, hold Power button
2. Press Volume Down to highlight Recovery -> press Power to select Recovery
3. Backup/Restore -> Nand backup
4. Wipe -> Wipe data/factory reset
5. Wipe -> Dalvik Cache

So, if i can do it for a factory reset, when should i do it, before the factory reset or after?

If your goal is to just put it back to factory setting, what's the problem with JUST doing both resets anyway?

I don't understand what those wipes do and if they are necessary when doing a FR. I've heard that it might help to wipe the cache in case i have a problem with the phone. That's why i'm asking.

Cache is cache... stored memory. Its like if you watch porn online, you wanna clear cache to ensure no one accidentally bumps in to your profile.

Ok, i understand i can clear the cache. When should it be done? Before or after a FR?

Ok, someone please help. I bet the majority of you have custom roms and you know for sure how to wipe the cache before installing a custom rom.
Please share this knowledge with me. I'm gonna sell the device if i can't get any help. I'm tired of some issues with it.
I tried to enter the fastboot menu (or whatever is called) by pressing the power button + volume down + trackball but it reboots after the checking for an update.zip file because it fails to see any.
What do i do?

Relax.
Do you have a custom recovery? If not, install one (if you want to install custom ROMs).
If you do, when the phone is powered down, press the power button and the volume down button at the same time. You will arrive at your custom recovery screen. Go to wipe and you will see that you can factory reset, wipe cache, dalvik cache, battery settings and rotate settings. I am under the impression that wipe factory data would wipe everything, including cache etc. In general, if you are switching between versions of a custom ROM, you can get away with wiping cache and dalvik cache without having to do a factory reset. If you are going to a completely new ROM then you should back up all apps with titanium backup, nandroid backup (in custom recovery menu) and then wipe (factory reset) and flash your new ROM.

I haven't dealt with stock recovery in a long time, but power down, hold power button and volume down at the same time. You will get to the recovery screen, select factory reset (or data wipe or whatever the option is), reboot and you are good to go. Don't worry about cache or dalvik cache.

I tried that. The only options are Fastboot, Recovery, Clear Storage and simlock.
After i reach the screen i get the "checking sd...no image found " message.
Clear storage has only one option: Delete all user data? yes/no.
If i select recovery it reboots.
Does this mean i cannot access wipe dalvik cache?

Delete all user data then. When do you see " no image found"? If you hit recovery and it sreboot then you need to flash the stock recovery again. Forget about wipe dalvik cache, that is not important if you are just trying to factory reset and may not even be available from a stock recovery (can't remember though).

But that looks like Factory Reset to me. I was looking for a way to clear all possible cache. I've read on some other post that a guy cleared the dalvik cache and it solved some problems with his N1.
I guess i'll chose that one.

I must have been confused by the title of your thread and your first sentence starting with " I want to factory reset ..." Honestly, I don't remember but wiping cache alone may not be possible with a stock recovery. Just factory reset, start over and that's your best bet to clear up any issues.

[Q] Avoiding boot loops when flashing a custom ROM

I am currently on stock+cfroot LA3. I have attempted to flash several custom ROM via CWM, however I always seem to get a bootloop. I follow directions first, then try the various other directions culled from other posts.
At there prerequisites to flashing a custom ROM such as being on the same base stock add the custom you are trying to flash?

First is to follow the steps detailed in the ROM post exactly. Some recommend a full wipe, while others don't. Then I boot into CWM, select the zip file from sd card, wipe cache and dalvik, and reboot. Next is to try a full wipe regardless if I get into bootloop.

Looking about I realized that "full wipe" means different things to different people. I'm still curious if there are prerequisites such as the same base before flashing.

Curious about this cos i'm in your boat too. Follow everything but still get bootloops.

ive had the same issue too guys, for me, i started again with KKA, rooted it, and then flash my roms over that with the CF kernel, that works for me, but ive always found installing other roms over fm kernel or abyss will not work on my note, i get bootloops.
When flashing a stock, you should also do a full flash, use the pit file and bootloader if its avail and flash the lot, this way your getting a proper full flash, not just the 3 file method, but be careful and read up first, flashing bootloaders can be risky.

you should change the order you did, like this
if rom need fullwipe.
1. boot into recovery.
2. full wipe.
3. wipe cache and dalvik.
4. select the zip from sdcar.
if rom no need to wipe, ex rom of criskelo you only boot in recovery and select zip file, but you must flash over other custom rom.

In CWM, I don't have an option for "full wipe". I have:
* wipe data / factory reset
* wipe cache partition
and under the Advanced section:
* wipe Dalvik Cache
* wipe Battery Stats

Another option that looks like it COULD mean "full wipe" is:
*#*#7780#*#* (on the phone keypad)
There's even:
*2767*3855#
I'll try with the wipe data and see what happens.

Yes, a full wipe or clean wipe is, factory data reset, wipe cache partition and dalvik wipe. So the 3 before flashing a rom and you shouldn't have any issues

Using the same ROM I have no such problem. Have you well made full wipe before flash ROM ? Try to reboot into recovery the wipe cache, wipe davilk cache, reboot system. Perhaps the problem disappears.

Have you installed any mod after ROM flash ? I've only installed the original ROM and my applis but no mod. That question because few others have wake up problem after screen off, perhaps they have mods.

As you can see in the title im a lil bit confused about full wipe and i got 1 question!
What's the process of a full wipe cuz i saw in alot of ROMs threads and im aware of not doing something stupid and bricking my phone,can somebody tell me what a full wipe includes?
Aswell i would like to know the steps for a full wipe before flashing a ROM!

Full wipe means all data of previous rom you have installed to be wiped clean, all email accounts, contacts in the address book and apps will be deleted. That is why is always best to backup your apps with Titanium backup
All other things like on your sdcard still stays intact.
Full wipe steps:
1-Reboot into recovery mode ( To enter recovery mode, shut down your phone and wait for it to be completly turned off then you hold the Volume Up + Home + Power )
2-Do wipe data/factory reset.
3-Wipe cache.
4-Go advanced wipe delvik cache

[Q] Steps to restore backup file using cwm recovery

Hi guys,
I believe this question has been asked multiple times, and i myself tried searching for answers from many various source to clarify my doubts, only to get more confused due to conflicting information.
Let's say now i am on a custom ROM. Before flashing the custom ROM, i made a backup of my stock touchwiz rom using cwm. However i want to revert back to the exact same state before flashing the custom ROM. What are the steps i need to do to restore the backup file?
1) Some sources mentioned just booting into cwm recovery, selecting "backup and restore" option, select "restore" and choosing the desired backup file will allow the phone to restore to the state prior to flashing.
2) Some other sources mentioned needing to wipe cache/wipe delvik cache/format system/format cache etc. first before i can restore the backup file.
So which is it?

Personally, I always choose option 2 if going to another rom. If restoring an earlier backup within the same rom i use option 1.
Don't know excact what the right thing to do is, but it never hurt to wipe cache / dalvik cache / system because you have it all backed up anyway. At least if you backup regulary. I back up regulary and delete the backups i don't want.

Cos i saw a youtube video, where the guy did not wipe cache/delvik cache. instead, he formatted cache, data and system.

Any other things i should look out for or preventive measures i should take for restoring backup from cwm?
i have been reading of cases where restoration through cwm fails and they have to go through the whole process of re-rooting and flashing before being able to restore it

there is no need for wiping, the recovery does it on its own prior to restoring.
