Hi everyone,
I have an iPad 2 and have been using it with an external keyboard to replace my laptop and netbook when traveling. I use Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Salesforce.com, Evernote, Catch, Pages, Numbers, and LinkedIn. The only time i bring a laptop or netbook is if I need to make a Powerpoint presentation and the only game I play very infrequently is solitaire. My big complaint with the iPad is the implementation of Google Drive is awful. I can't save files to Google Drive, only view, it's very limiting. For my purposes, the 7 inch screen seems like it could work well for the apps I run with an external keyboard.
Will I be able to save files directly to Google Drive from apps by moving to the Nexus 7?
Can anyone speak to what additional business functionality or better integration with Google Apps I can expect should I move to the Nexus 7 over the iPad?
Appreciate any advice that can be offered. Thanks in advance.
im not an expert but i think the nexus 7 doesnt have 3g-4g, so if u want to upload to drive, u must have a internet connection
Android devices have full integration with Google Services, Gmail, Gtalk, Google Voice....everything.
And you can save things to your Google Drive, I'm a dropbox guy but I believe it works the same way.
I don't have 3G or 4g on the iPad. Jut using wifi
Thanks
Hi nospin. Can you tell me what full integration gets me or means?
Google has already ported their apps to the iPad.
Having google drive on the nexus 7 is a big plus, but I'm hoping there is more.
Thanks

Google apps have better integration with Nexus 7 and there is no doubt about it. Yes you can save files on google drive but by using drive app or if office docment then you can use a proper office suite software to same directly on google drive. Please note that google drive would not act like a local drive for you. It can automatically sync for you if you want.
The answer of this question is not easy and it entirely depends what you want out of your device. If 3rd party apps and games are important to you then stay with iPad but if you want a better priced and advance device (compared to ipad 2) then buy Nexus 7. It can do much more than iPad 2 can do for you. Also if you want something smaller than 10 inch then only buy Nexus 7 and nothing else. The only problem with Nexus 7 is the limited number of apps optimized for it at this point in time. Hopefully things would change with time but this is the current situation.
I currently own iPad 3 and I am going to use both in parallel as Nexus 7 can not replace what this iPad is doing for me. What this iPad can not do for me, this Nexus 7 would do for me. I just wanted a Tegra 3 based 7 inch device for gaming so this is why I have ordered Nexus 7 and what other device would have better compatibility then one of the Google's own. I just wanted a different toy after getting bored of iPad 3. IPad 3 is still and woukd remain a better device for quite some time to come i.e. until next March.

I was thinking of purchasing the N7 to replace my netbook and be my only device (outside of my iPhone).
The only things I ever do on my netbook (my main computer) is surf the web, play emulators, watch netflix, and write papers on microsoft word for college.
I figure that with a bluetooth keyboard and a stand I could type my papers. I also thought that with a bluetooth wiimote + classic controller and GBA.emu I could play games to my hearts content. Lastly I hope that I could use an MHL adapter to play the emulators and Netflix on my big screen.
Anyone have thoughts on this or is going to do this as well? Am I nuts? Any problems you see me running into?
I don't see why you couldn't do any of those things other than using MHL which hasn't been confirmed yet (but, if it's not available, may be able to be hacked into working apparently). I know for a fact that as soon as I get my Nexus 7 I'll probably be using my laptop a lot less.
I would never replace a tablet with a laptop/netbook, I'd just use it to accommodate it.
I have a Chrome book 5 series by Samsung and it's SUPER nice for school. Battery life great and for school work its even better.
I'm buying this tab to help keep in touch with the cloud and also for my books. It's great for books if you're in college and for games. Not so much typing up stuff.
If you want the best of both worlds, I suggest buying a Chrome book from craigslist or something for 200-ish and this tab for another 200. Together, for 400 bucks, you're set for school till you graduate! And think about it, that's still cheaper than just an iPad... or half decent laptop.

actually, i'm considering getting this for my dad for exactly this reason. all he ever does with his first generation windows 7 netbook is use Openoffice, gotomyPC (for work stuff), google drive, and google chrome. he's really wanted something more portable than his netbook and he loves his DX2, so i think that would be perfect for him.
This is going to replace my iPad 2 as my "always on me" ereader/tablet. The iPad is too big and heavy for long reading sessions, and frankly I want to be rid of my last i-device. This was just too good an opportunity to pass up.
That's what I did. About a week ago I sold my year old macbook air 13" for $1000 on craigslist and bought a samsung galaxy tab 2 7". Been loving it ever since! Now I've found out about the nexus 7 and I pre ordered the 16 gb model. I'm trying an experiment in our family with not having our own laptops and just using a tablet (wife's idea). Setting my wife set up the same way. We have 1 pc laptop that we'll share and use our tablets as our personal device. So far, it's been working out great for us. Seriously can't wait for the nexus 7 to arrive!
I already use my nook in lieu of a laptop -- my aging Core 2 Quad handles all the heavy lifting i need it to.
Try typing anything serious on a netbook. Even with my Transformer Prime, it's not fun to do, plus the major office suites (including several paid for versions I've tried) are really watered down. If you're planning on writing anything serious with it, adding graphics, etc, I'd seriously suggest keeping a laptop around for that at least, even if it's an old and/or basic one.
Especially since most tablet apps on Android are just stretched phone apps.
Currently, I use my Cr48 for all light tasks and it goes with me anywhere. Although it has been a stellar device and I do enjoy ChromeOS, its a bit underpowered for some multimedia tasks (i.e. watching Netflix). As my aging "OG" Evo phone also suffers from an even more apparent lack of power, my purchase of the N7 is more to replace the midsize "netbook-tier" device than anything else. I think it'll fit there perfectly.
My ThinkPad will remain the go-to "main device" for any heavy lifting tasks but, as the W520 is anything but portable, I need a more lightweight option!

Almost
My Nexus 7 almost replaces my laptop. I was going to replace my Dell Inspiron 1525 with a netbook or a tablet. Since I am no longer on the road traveling, all I need is a living room device. My Nexus 7 works well for what it does. I love Google Now. It works well for looking up things my wife and I are discussing. The Chrome web browser works well but not good enough for bill paying and banking. Also printing does not work well with the older printer I have. I have a very nice Windows 7 desktop for anything serious. The Nexus 7 is a wonderful device as an edition to a digital household, but not a complete notebook replacement. I can say that I now read more books and the GPS is awesome.
2 days after I got my n7, my laptop passed away.
Can't say I've missed it much.
In some cases tho, it would be faster. For instance it's way faster ctrl+clicking a bunch of links compared to long-press+tap.
My tablet has become my main device. Of course I've been using a chromebook for the for quite a while as my main computer. Still needed for some Web work, but for the most part my new n7 will be my main device.

HDMI is a sore loss. Nothing like PS3 Bluetooth controller playing classic games on the big screen. I would recommend the Samsung note 10".
Or wait till they get wifi sync setup.

Ever since my Nexus arrived, i've severely neglected my laptop. Now, it just feels so damn heavy after just throwing my Nexus into my bag and being on my way for the past few weeks.
Safe to say, my Nexus7 has become my main device as well.
Hi all ,
I've come here to ask a few questions to help me decide if this a good purchase for my 9yr old son
I've been after a tablet for him for Xmas and have narrowed it down to three the kindle fire HD , Asus nexus 7 or a Samsung tab 2.0
This is mainly due to budget all I want to know is the following
1. Can you transfer music and films from PC directly to the device and what format does it support
2. Are the apps and games library any good ? I've heard it's limited compared to the nexus 7 but he mainly plays the sims 3 and GTA which I have seen running on the device but not sure if it has to be modified or if you can just get them straight from the store
3. Can you use a external hard drive for extra extra storage ? I know the kindle and nexus don't have expandable memory like the Samsung but can you plug in a external hard drive to use or not ?
Any other feedback to help with my purchase is welcome just bear in mind he may only be 9
But he is a clever 9 yr old and and uses a gaming pc (mine) every day so a cheap
Tablet from maplin just won't do he needs the wow factor as he has already been talked
Out of a iPad
Thanks chris

I own both the Kindle Fire HD and the Nexus 7. From the things you described you want to get out of the device I would recommend the Nexus 7. If you are not planning on modding and adding the play store to the KFHD, then yes it is limited, Appstore-50,000+ apps - Play Store-500,000+ apps. That said there are a lot of really horrible and useless apps on Play but there are still way more quality apps than Amazon. Also the Nexus is going to run the more demanding games a lot smoother because of the more superior processor.
You can transfer content to both devices via PC, apps, music, video, etc
As far as format support, that is dependent on the actual application you are running, that goes back to having more apps to chose from.
Neither device has expandable memory as you said but the Nexus 7 does support OTG, which is where you can get a micro to regular usb cable that will allow you to plug in a flash card or other usb storage device, you can get them on Amazon, haha, for a couple bucks.
Now if you are thinking he might use this more for media content and you have Amazon Prime then you might consider the KFHD. Amazon is unsurpassed in media content at the moment. The speakers are far better, I mean FAR better, the screen has a slight edge on the Nexus in my opinion, and the HDMI out is nice to have.
Hope some of this helped

+1 A good and balanced review of the pros and cons.
The KFHD is made a good deal better - without rooting - by side loading the google apps. Not difficult and a good boost. Chrome, youtube for me are daily use cases,
BTW - none of the tablets AFAIK are satisfactory driving external hard drives. You need power to the drive, a rooted device and an (easily available) application
Thanks for the reply
I've been edging towards the nexus 7 for the processing power of the
Tegra chip and now knowing that the kindle does not have as many apps available
without hacking the device im starting to think the nexus 7 is the best choice
now my only issue is finding one at the the right price in stock
Thanks chris
I picked up the 32GB 3G Nexus 7 just a few days ago, I also have a Note II which I've owned for a few months. I was wondering for a long while, is there any point owning the N7 if you already have a Note II? Here are my thoughts...
Gaming
I find the Note II much better for graphically intense games like NFS MW, it runs them all very smooth unlike the N7, especially since my Note II is rooted and both CPU/GPU are overclocked. This isn't really an issue for me as I didn't buy the N7 for gaming, but it has allowed me to free up some space on my Note II since I've installed all my 'less graphically intense' and 'smaller file size' games on to the N7 and deleted them from my Note II. They look nice on the N7's bigger screen.
Browsing
When I'm at home I find myself using the N7 more, the bigger screen on the N7 makes browsing the web better.
E-Books
This was one of the reasons I purchased the N7. The bigger screen makes it easier on the eyes for reading. Can anyone recommend me a good pdf book reader?
TV/Sky
Since my Note II is rooted, Sky Go will not work on it. I haven't and won't be rooting the N7 and Sky Go works! I've got the poetic slimline case, which has a built in stand, perfect for Sky and TVcatchup! :good: I highly recommend the case too, it offer good protection and adds little bulk.
Phone/Messaging
I was surprised to find that my 3G N7 which has a SIM installed, can receive text messages! I installed SMS Pro from the play store and I can now reply to the messages. It's won't be used as a phone but having internet on the go and being able to send and receive texts is a nice feature.
Conclusion
I think there is space for someone to own both devices. As I said, my N7 will be used mainly for TV/Sky and e-books, some light gaming and browsing. Whereas my Note II is used more for gaming and as an actual phone. Now all I need is the Nexus 10
I got both and I agree.
Gaming performance is no comparison, exynos quad completely destroys tegra 3 in pretty much every single game you can think of even tegra optimized titles. overclocked my N7 to 1.5ghz cpu and 520mhz gpu and it still can't keep up.
For web browsing, I do admit I use my N7 more at home because of the bigger display, even though the samsung browser runs as smooth as safari on iOS.
agree about ebooks. adobe reader (+ enable gpu rendering in developer options) if you want the smoothest & fastest experience. Or ezpdf reader if you want features.
I own them both, but I still think that 7" is way to small for a tablet to have the same browsing exp. as on PC, so I use my N7 as a phone, Note 2 just for calls so I plan to sell it
I use my Nexus 7 as a school PDF textbook (all 4 class books are on my note 2) and for Tegra only games. I browse forums in tapatalk and I also use currents from time to time. Other than that I use my Note 2 for everything. If I didn't use the N7 for text books, I could easily get rid of it without any hesitation. I still might, I believe a 8in or 10in tablet would serve my tablet needs better. Nexus 10 or maybe one of the new Samsung tablets coming out.
I also have both and agree with everything except playing games. I only do that on my nexus 7. Just got done playing Temple Run 2 on my Nexus 7. I use my Nexus primarily when traveling so my phone battery does not run down in the airport and on the plane etc. I am interested to see they will be announcing a Note 8 inch tablet at MWC in February. Gotta love the Note 2 and for the price the Nexus 7!
The Nook software is still the most functional ereader simple to do a bookmark and use it does side load books as well. I've tried some of the others and there a hella needless extra button presses required to bookmark or highlight text.
And who the crap is reading pdf books ugh epub is the best format.

I think once I've owned it longer I'll have a better idea, but I don't think it comes close to using a proper PC. I've ordered a second monitor, so I'll soon have dual Dell 24" screens, no tablet is touching that.

For games like Temple Run 2 it's fine, but when you try running games like NFS on both devices side by side, you'll know what I mean.

I'm new to e-books in general and pdf is a format I'm familiar with. Will look into epub thanks, and Nook software. :good:
A lot of academic books come in PDF format, although I go with epub if I can. Ezpdf is a good reader for PDF files.
Cool reader is great for epubs and is true freeware.
Finally mantano reader works superbly for both PDF and epub but it does cost a few bucks.

All I can say is I love the size of my note 2. I haven't purchased a tablet since I sold my touchpad. But the nexus tablets are looking good. Most of the time the tablet will be used by my kids anyway. This way my phone will be less likely to be damaged by little slippery hands. I just want the tablet to be just as good as my phone for gaming and graphics. Hopefully the next Samsung or nexus will be at a low price with great processor and graphics.

I use Aldiko on the N7 for reading both PDFs and epub books. i find it works very well, and I like it much better than Adobe Reader or various other PDF readers I tried, plus I can see all my books and magazines in one place on the Aldiko bookshelf. I like the way the page can be turned just by touching the edge of the screen, and the fact that it remembers where I was reading in every book without having to set a bookmark, though you can set manual bookmarks as well.
The other reason I use Aldiko is that it integrates very well with Calibre running on my PC, both by USB and WiFi. I keep all my ebooks, including PDF, in Calibre. Aldiko can download books over WiFi directly from Calibre's built-in private web server which simulates an online bookstore. It's really quick and easy to use.
I have both and now want to add a nexus 10

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, will go through each one and hopefully find a reader I like.
I got to try my N7 out today as a satnav device as I went on a relatively long trip. Google Navigation worked perfectly, I had data on the SIM so could download maps as I was going. Just need a car mount that will hold this beast.
Oh and as for adding a Nexus 10 to my collection, won't be happening for a long while yet. I've just picked up a second 24" Dell monitor for my desktop, WOW.

Hi all, I'm looking for a new tablet and I'm thinking the nexus 7 may be the one. Currently, I only plan to use it for university and not much else, but before buying one I wanted to ask a few questions:
I need to be able to view and edit PowerPoint and Microsoft word files, does the nexus 7 support these capabilities?
Can I use drop box on the nexus to transfer files between devices?
Can I purchase an external keyboard to use, as I will be typing a lot in a short period of time and if so, where could I buy it from?
Is there any other tablet around the price of the nexus I should also consider?
Thanks in advance to anyone that can help, it would be greatly appreciated

- About powerpoint and word files compatibility is not depended on hardware it's on software so check Google Play apps.
(My personal best choice is Kingsoft Office - https://play.google.com/store/apps/...=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNuLndwcy5tb2ZmaWNlX2VuZyJd )
-Yes there is an app for that called Dropbox. https://play.google.com/store/apps/...251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5kcm9wYm94LmFuZHJvaWQiXQ..
-Search eBay ( http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=nexus+7+keyboard&_sop=12 )
-Hundreds of them but the question is can they provide a good quality as Nexus 7 can ? (Speed, specs, build, support )
Thanks heaps hreidmar kingsoft seems to be the app I was looking for, I didn't want to have to get a windows tablet.
As with the last question, I should have phrased it differently, but essentially for my needs: would you recommend a nexus 7 tablet with a keyboard or should I go for something such as a netbook / chrome book (with a budget under $300)?
Also, i currently have the galaxy s4 as a phone, if that matters at all when it comes to choosing, such as getting the galaxy tab instead.

Is there any specific reasons as to why a netbook or chromebook would be better? As far as I can tell, it's the same except the tablet does not come with a permanent keyboard (I'll get a blue tooth one).
I've never really enjoyed the experience of windows 8, so if i do go with that OS I'll probably stick to windows 7 or earlier

A 10" tablet + keyboard or a proper laptop would be my recommendation.
A 7" screen is just too small if you're doing a lot of typing or graphical work. Netbooks have had their day, most modern tablets are better spec'd, handier and more portable. A laptop will be much more powerful but you lose a bit on the portability side and might have power issues during a long day.

Thanks troute is there any tablet or laptop you'd recommend? I can't really spend anymore than $300 AUD, and the nexus 10 seems to be over $400.

No idea m8 sorry, I don't know what is available in Aus or what the prices are. One option would be to save up for a bit longer though, A$300 = about £184 which isn't much when buying technology over here.
Remember too that if you do buy a tablet the case and keyboard will be extra.

I'm from Australia! I'd recommend waiting for the next Nexus 7. It should be around $300 for the 32GB version. Trust me, you want alot of storage.

For productivity I would stick with a windows machine.
The N7 is great but it's a toy compared to a PC. I use kingsoft and it is the best on android but it is no excel. If you are going to build complex spreadsheets it will restrict you. It's more designed to view and edit documents rather than build them.
Also android has no native support for proxy over wifi so if your uni uses a proxy you won't be able connect to their network without rooting.
In my opinion an entry level laptop is a better choice for study.
dont be a fool. the new nexus 7 is just around the corner
Got a nexus 7 (an Aussie like you) and while it's good for slides and all, comes up short if you want to do much else besides really really basic notes. I would probably save a few hundred more and get an entry level ultra book or something like that. It'll be much more useful in the long term. Trust me on this one.

If you want a leisure computer with top notch productivity and the ability to run some work programs then you should stick with Windows 8. Why not try Acer's new 8 inch model coming out.
If you want a leisure computer that is a peripheral to a real work machine (a desktop or laptop) that you might just do a little document editing on then the Nexus 7 is the better choice.
Weigh how much you're going to rely on the device for getting things done.

yeah kingsoft did seem quite slow when I tried it on my phone :/ no idea what my university uses, but others use iPads just fine there. Also not looking to do anything complex really, just be able to write down notes quickly during lectures and the ability to write notes on power points (like on a windows computer)

Kingsoft although the most full featured free office app on android it is also the most laggy.
If your getting 300 get it as a gift card for a local or online store so you can contribute your own money towards a win8 machine.
Android is not a desktop or laptop replacement. As said before it compliments one well but I can't imagine using a mobile OS for my main computer through uni. Would have driven me nuts!
Even for not taking I believe paper is better as you have the freedom to combine words with diagrams and formula much easier.
Tablets work better in a corporate environment for emails and reviewing documents. When studying I think this technology can get in the way of learning and becomes a distraction.
My opinion obviously YMMV

Thanks heaps for that input ozzy unfortunately as I have just started uni, saving up an extra $200-300 may be quite difficult, especially since my trimester just ended so I'll need to buy more books soon. I will try and look around for a small netbook or cheap laptop that runs windows, hopefully I can come by one. If not, i can always attach a keyboard to my galaxy haha

I agree that if you're going to be writing papers and such, a laptop is the only way to go. You can probably get a cheap one for around $300 if you keep an eye out for sales.

I'll be writing papers on my main PC at home, I'm just looking for something to write down notes and things while I'm at uni, so I don't get mixed up between physical notes and virtual notes, like to keep everything on one platform for convenience really

I see. In that case a pen and notebook is probably the best thing for taking notes, but maybe I'm just old because that's how I did it when I was in University

So I've found myself using my Nexus 6 for more and more, while us in my iPad for less and less since owning the N6.
I'm highly considering selling my iPad, but am wondering if I'm just still in the "new phone" phase of the N6, especially since this is the first phablet I've ever owned and still very new to me. Have any of you owned a phablet for longer and gotten rid of your tablets? Did you regret it or find that it was the right move?
The only thing I know I wouldn't like using my phone for would be reading books, but I would get a Nook for that purpose, so that's not holding me back as much as just the better experience using a tablet may offer over a phablet.
I'd be interested in hearing the opinions of anyone who has made the switch entirely to a phablet from having a phone and tablet previously.

I have had the Samsung Note and Note 2 and 3 and can tell you that I use both my laptop and tablets far less today than I ever used to ..this large phone has truly changed the way I use computing devices.
Nexus 6 is a great phone with lots of fun hacking ahead !

I thought I would use Nexus 6 to replace my Nexus 7. Sorry, it just won't. It's not quite big enough for me to do that. Movies, reading books, Web browsing I still prefer the Tablet.
I'm going to sell my Samsung Tab 3 7" as I never use it now. The Nexus 6 is perfect for anything I used a tablet for, plus it's a damn sight quicker!
I have an iPad mini wifi only and I have very little use for it now myself other than the screen is big enough for me to want to play games on it more so than my iPad. Overall I wouldn't object to selling it though

I had an iPad and then other tablets like galaxy tabs. Then I bought my note 3 and now a nexus 6. So I sold all my tablets. I use only my nexus 6 and my macbook.
{Nexus 6 - Tapatalk}
I still use my Galaxy 10.1 when I'm home. Nexus for everything else
I use my iPad Air all day at work, mostly because it allows me to browse forums, read news etc on the sly. Lol iPad's are issued to some employees. So it's not noticeable for one to be using theirs throughout the day. But I pretty much use only my N6 when I'm at home or anywhere else.
I use my note 10.1 still, larger content, spen, and its great to use so I don't drain the battery.
Having an iPad is cool because you have apps that are not on the play store yet, and some that will never be
I still use my N7 at home for media consumption, in the car for accurate speed (I have a 71 Super Beetle), GPS navigation, and media, and out in the field for RDP/VNC, work stuff, and communication.
I had a tiny phone before the N6, and as a result, took my tablet everywhere and used it for everything except phone calls. Now, unless I drive somewhere myself, the tablet stays home.
