Nope I was wondering that too especially after seeing the video reviews and when they would hit About Phone I didn't see the Webtop section. And this article confirm it. http://www.androidauthority.com/motorola-atrix-hd-webtop-lapdock-not-supported-101012/

It's only HDMI mirror because Webtop OS is not installed.
You'd need to find a motorola stock rom, mount it and use a file browser to extract The Webtop.apk
Simply installing the APK wouldnt work either because Webtop requires it's own partition on internal storage. Webtop OS is another operating system running ON TOP of Android. I dont see it working for our phone. This idea WORKS in theory, but I dont see anyone with a non motorola phone using a webtop mod. So its probably slim chance we'll see a working Webtop on the Atrix HD
Can anyone get me the apk's for webtop on another motorola device running ICS?
I'd be willing to try my hand at taking the apk apart and all that fun stuff.
They probably didnt add the webtop because they decided to downgrade to 8GB of storage, like there is much of a price difference between 8 and 16GB of flash memory these days...

Exactly, plus the whole webtop OS didnt sell as well as they'd hope under AT&T and the idea is dying off with Verizon.
@kulow:
Having the webtop APK is useless. It contains nothing about the OS. It's only a bridge to start it up when your plugged in.
WebOS sits on internal storage and a separate Operating System. It needs to be extracted and configured just like an Operating system.
Having the APK will just launch an App that will search for a non-existent Partition.
If you want it, go get an Image of a stock rom, mount it and use a file explorer to find the *.*apk
With only 8gb on our phone I could see Webtop taking up to 4gb since it needs its own partition. It's also very RAM hungry.
There is no use in trying to even fathom working on webtop when we have the issue of no Root and the Locked Bootloader.

Well I've been doing some digging around on the Droid Razr forums and noticed that Webtop 3.0 for ICS was less webtop and more of a tablet view. Right now when you dock it does a mirror of your screen. I know this is probably way beyond my knowledge but the possibility of digging in to the structure and code of some of the apks involved with webtop 3.0 would lead us to a more tablet optimized view when connected to a lapdock.
Another thought was, when root/bootloader unlock happens, was to manually create the ext3 osh partition called by webtop and place the required files found in the osh partition from a similar device like the Razr.
I'm a novice at this so right now it's all baseless ideas that may prove to be impossible to do, but what is impossible for some may be possible for others.

If we could make a browser just for the resolution of mirrored mode, all you would need is a BT Keyboard&Mouse.
That would use way less resources on the device, and it would defeat the purpose of WebTop OS being installed and wasting all that space.

Technically yes and no.
Yes, because its a linux shell running off a partition under Android.
No, because it still requires Android to run.
The lapdocks seem to be as popular as chrome books.
I see Webtop being phased out on future devices.
As good as the webtop idea was, people still want all the gadgets and will still buy a tablet, netbook/laptop, and a phone, so the Lapdock is pretty obsolete.
It's slower than a netbook, and has less features than a tablet. $150 for the lapdock just for a full screen browser seems out of the question.
It becomes more useful with the Ubuntu mod, but it still has functionality issues.
It's annoying that it's gone now, but in all honesty it wasnt that useful. If you bring a lapdock, you might as well bring a netbook and tether it.

So as far as I can tell right now the only major difference in the Atrix and Bionic is the ram. Also looking at the dock connectors the only thing it looks like it uses is HDMI port and USB port on the phone. I know it's early on and it's most likely going to be one of the most sought after things right now, but what do you guys think of the possibility of porting the webtop app over to the Bionic? Also how important do you think the ram difference is in relation to running Webtop?
From what I read the webtop app is suppose to run all the time so that you can remove and replace in the dock with no requirements to start it so its in a constant on suspended state. Which leads me to think if it's possible to port the app if we can open the app on command could possibly lead to better results with the limited ram, if the ram cause a problem with running the app.
Just looking for other opinions on the matter as I plan on looking into the workings of it and see if it's like the Garmin app that people have been trying to port over for awhile that has come to be yet.
Isn't the webtop a bit more than just an Android app? I imagine it'd be fairly difficult to port. And I'm assuming a Bionic won't fit in the laptop accessory, so that might cause additional challenge... actually using it. Have to mod the accessory's shape, or connect if via a cord.

well from the pics that i have seen the droidx should fit in the atrix dock so if the webtop app can be ported i can see it going to the X
The webtopp app is suppose to be (atleast according to Moto reps during CES) a cloud computing environment from Motorola so porting it will not be possible.
...Sanjay Jha has just told investors at a Morgan Stanley shindig that the Atrix won't be unique for long -- the Webtop app will be making an appearance on all of Moto's "high performance" smartphones in the second half of this year...
http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/28/motorola-all-our-high-end-smartphones-will-have-webtop-from-jun/
Hardware is CLOSE to fitting
Not just a matter of porting the APK. I have an X, Atrix and the laptop dock. The plugs look the same and I almost forced them in before looking closely and the USB and HDMI ports are flipped around on the Atrix and dock.
I sure had my hopes up for a few mins though!

This is old info in this thread and so I'd thought I'd update it.
Motorola's CEO has already stated the webtop will be available for the Bionic sometime after it ships.
The webtop 'app' isn't so much an app but more of a suite of apps. It actually is a lite version of Ubuntu (I think 8.04) running as a guest OS simultaneously with Android. The apks that exist for webtop exist solely to provide an 'android experience' to the guest OS. There is a monitor app that watches the ports to detect when it is plugged into a webtop-enabled dock. There is a content provider app that provides an interface to various data on the Android OS (like contacts, emails, calendar, etc). And there is a portal app that (I think) projects the webtop OS display to HDMI.
The OS can be accessed on the phone by installing a vncserver in the ubuntu OS and using a client on the phone or on a networked device.
It won't be hard to port. The APKs handling the guest OS have already been hacked to remove the dock requirement for activating it.
Haven't seen a post about this for our Bionic yet, is it going to be possible? or do we need to by that stupid ugly box lol.
Thanks
Ditto and...
My hope is to see Webtop stream over WiFi using the DLNA protocol. That way we could use the Bionic's screen as the mouse/keyboard and not have to lug around extra hardware.
boo on the webtop adapter
I bought one. excited1 get it plugged up change resolution to the highest it goes AND bam! 55 inches of glorious BIONIC in my living room. It was really impressive because i was sitting underneath it.
OK so plugged in hdmi, now the charger going to watch me some videos surf me some web properly LOW MEMORY LOW MEMORY ok boo
f course the whole time I am back and forth to laptop sitting behind me.
Then I tried to play some tunes through TV/surround NOPE only plays through phone speaker unless you set resolution to 720... on and on and on...
Just isnt worth it.
It hasn't changed too much from the atrix although i think it is built off a newer version of ubuntu cuz the xorg is definetly newer. Unfortunately lxterminal is pointing to xterm which only has a symbolic link to what they must have taking out when they cleaned up. Also 1080p is listed as a mode but xrandr doesn't set it right. Dpkg, apt, make, install, and other build tools are there. I am trying to be careful though so progress will be slow til we can get a fast boot sbf plus some koush clockwork magic. I will keep you posted if i find anything.

For those of you who are mad the Droid 3 doesn't have Webtop, Canonical is making a competitor and I imagine the Droid 3 will be able to run it. It meets the specs, not sure about USB host but everything else. I imagine you could use bluetooth for keyboard/mouse as well. I wonder if it will be possible to get something like this working on the Droid 3.
-Dual-core 1GHz CPU
-Video acceleration: shared kernel driver with associated X driver; Open GL, ES/EGL
-Storage: 2GB for OS disk image
-HDMI: video out with secondary frame buffer device
-USB host mode

Silber said Ubuntu for Android would be released under an open source license, but that Canonical expects it to mostly be pre-installed on specific hardware.

So it will be open source and not OEM only. I was thinking it would be open source since its Ubuntu but you can never be sure.
As far as optimizing it for hardware, hopefully the fact that the phone they demoed it on has the same exact OMAP/PowerVR SoC that is on the Droid 3 means the source will be most optimized for that hardware. In the demo it looked like a nearly finished project.

I'm hoping it would be possible to get it working with just HDMI output and no dock. I don't know if the Droid 3 supports USB OTG host mode, but it does allow bluetooth keyboards and mice simultaneously so hopefully that would be an option.

He made it sound somewhat like Android source is, it will be available but the average user can't just install it on a device and expect it to work. Hopefully the devs here can make it work. The biggest limitation for us is going to be only 512MB of RAM, besides for that the demo phone has the same hardware as the Droid 3. It may not be a multitasking device, but I imagine things could be done on the Linux side to cut memory usage, possibly even switching to a lighter Ubuntu forked distro. It would still be useful as is for simple web browsing, a real office suite (LibreOffice), a real media player (VLC), etc.
Seriously thinking about getting the lapdock, since the Atrix one is very cheap and easily modified to work with the Droid 4.
Only problem is I don't want to go back to the stock ROM. Has anyone gotten Webtop to work on one of the ICS based CM or AOKP ports?
Also how much control do you get in Webtop. I understand it's basically Ubuntu, but can you install new packages or build your own from source. Is there hardware access to the GPU?
If your on an ICS leak webtop is 3.0, which means it is just tablet ui and is no longer a "separate" system.

I was looking forward to the idea of being able to boot into Ubuntu and compile full fat apps to run there.

not at the moment, because CM9 and AOKP still don't have support for HDMI-out.

That Ubuntu for Android is interesting, I was a little disappointed that webtop on ICS is just Android tablet UI rather than Ubuntu, however it is awesome that if you just use an HDMI cable the phone touchscreen changes into a touchpad!
I wonder how they are getting away with not publishing the source? As soon as a handset turns up for sale with Ubuntu on it, surely the source is going to have to come out or they will be violating the GPL, or is Ubuntu full of propriety closed source crap these days? (It's been a while since I used Linux as a desktop OS, and it was always Debian. Ubuntu didn't exist then)
On a related note, has anyone found a micro-HDMI cable that is actually capable of running at 1080p without corruption and sparklies. I have tried two and both were rubbish.
I got the motorola one from amazon, and it works flawlessly. I also got one from dealsextreme.com, which was considerably cheaper and free shipping, but they're services can be a bit shoddy at time, but I haven't had any big issues with them, and the cord quality is fine, no issues that I can see on my 1080p tv.

I tried a Motorola one... it was better in that you could actually see the 1080p display, but still flashed and corrupted.
I know my monitor is more sensitive than most to poor quality HDMI devices (most notably the PS3), so I guess I'll just have to look for a fancy one, or a tiny adaptor to use with an existing good cable.
For those interested: I found a way to install Ubuntu on my ICS Droid 4. It comes with Firefox and LibreOffice, some options like installing new apps seem a bit limited (maybe not in the donate version?), but I didn't go into too much detail.
While it's probably not as integrated as the original WebTop was, it might be more flexible in terms of settings/applications. The way to access it is basically to start it via Terminal, then (Android) VNC to view / interact with the desktop.
The link to the free version is: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zpwebsites.linuxonandroid
There's also some donation keys available, not sure what features they add. For me, tinkering around with it for 5 minutes is probably all I need it for, and the image is 3.5 GB so I'll probably remove it soon. Still, awesome that it works!

So if it has the NDK we can run the XBMC app and still have the chrome cast system run in the background and have the best of both worlds. Awesomesauce.
It makes sense that it runs Android, it's a real OS that can run apps unlike Chrome OS. However, it would not make sense to call it Android as Android is a religion that is polarizing. No diehard Apple fan or even casual iPhone user would be caught dead with an Android device.
Chrome, on the other hand, is agnostic and works across platforms.
The name choice was political.

Define app.
I have a rdp app on my chromebook that I can use on networks without internet perfectly fine. My text editing app works smoothly even without network. The ssh client works well too.
And, unlike android, with dev mode enabled I can run any gnu/Linux app I want without installing a second os in a chroot.
I personally prefer chrome os over android. Having a real Linux os tends to come in handy.
