As an owner of several android devices I've been thinking of getting a Nexus 7 tablet as a replacement for my Garmin GPS unit. The GPS unit I have today cost me $400 when I bought it and when I look at the platform it's a slow processor, 4gb of on-board storage, god awful voice control and 4 hours of use without the power. It led me to think about ditching it and using the Nexus 7 solely as my GPS but I think it would take some work to make it operate as a traditional GPS and it would need some thought around these areas;
Interface or Launcher - I'm thinking something similar to HTC Car or a full launcher replacement to lead right into a GPS app.
Mapping Program - There are several programs out there like NavFree and CoPilot but I still hope that Garmin Street-pilot comes to Android
Power Management - As your car starts the tablet to start and fire up the mapping app/Car Launcher without a ton of notifications and stuff (suppressed maybe?) and as your car powers off the tablet needs to shut itself down after let's say 5 minutes of no active power.
Traffic Updates - I'm not too sure how this can be done without a subscription in an app like CoPilot
Voice Command - I'm hoping Google Now! with a mapping app as the default it should be like 1000x more accurate at voice recognition. I think it needs a way to have a voice control daemon listening for a magic phrase to accept a command.
Enhanced POIs - it would be awesome if Poi could launch the native app associated with if need be.
these are just some of my random thoughts I was wondering what you guys thought? I think it could be done relatively simply and it'd be something i'd be willing to pay for to improve my GPS experience than the limited tech included in today's GPS navigation devices.
For the launcher idea, you could just spam a whole ton of maps icons all over the home screen. Then place some nfc stickers all over your car so you could activate wifi hotspot from your phone and activate wifi from your tablet to pair the 2 devices to use google maps.
I typed all that with google voice typing. Oh my goodness this is amazing.
Edit: By spam I mean placing a poopton of 2x2 squares of Maps, Navigation, Places, My Tracks, so that if you miss a tap with your finger, you won't dangerously scramble to resolve the issue and impair your driving.

Garmin bought out Navigon which I hope means that application will improve. Currently it's a steaming pile of poo though and can't touch the ease of use of Google Maps. The shear act of trying to search for an address in these GPS applications (particularly Navigon) when one has been used to the simplicity of Google Maps is enough to make one want to throw the device against a wall. I say keep your Garmin and supplement it with Google Maps.
There's something to be said for the simplicity of having integrated google services, like planning a road trip on your desktop in Google Maps and having all of your favorites right there on your android device along with other useful information like websites and reviews. As others have stated though, you will need internet access.
Ive been testing it out a little bit. Obviously the stock google offerings are no good if you are trying to do this without a data connection. It looks like navFree is the best option i have used so far, nice interface and maps, accurate and good voice guidance. The only thing i dont like about this app is there is literally no way to cancel guidance mid trip, unless you just add a new destination. I like the co-pilot app too but once i used it in the car it become apparent there is no voice guidance, at least for the free version.

There's a thread about it around here somewhere, something about the way the screen is made. If you search for polarized sunglasses I think you'll find it.
I pretty much bought it just for this. Although after using it for a little bit i am liking it more than my tf300.
I used it for a few trips with it tethered in car with google navigation and waze and it works well. The audio is piped through aux port and sounds good enough. However the mount i got from ebay is terrible... It shakes really bad, so hoping i can find a better mount.
And finally still looking for a car charger.
Also using go launcher so i can mount it landscape.

My SGS2 works in both, but it blacks out if you turn it 45 degrees clockwise (or 270 CCW) . iPad has the same problem, but in portrait mode.

Actually, I had the same thought. Forgive the possibly stupid questions but.
1. First of all does the Nex7 even have a GPS chip? If so has anyone tested it for navigation to see how reliable it is?
2. Has anyone seen a car dock that will fit a 7" monster like this?
3. How reliable is GMaps offline? I have an EVO LTE but have not saved any map data offline - I wonder if I were to save my whole metropolitan area on an N7 if GMaps would be feasible.

1 - Yes. It has a real GPS chip. User reports suggest it's very reliable, but I cannot comment as I don't own a N7 yet.
2 - I've seen some huge GPS units, but never a tablet mount. That said, check this link out.
3 - GMaps in offline mode can only cache select areas that you specify. When I go down south in a few weeks, I don't anticipate using Google Maps since their offline feature is (without being too mean) a joke. I'll probably be using NavFree or some other full featured offline GPS apps that I've read about on these forums. I love Google Navigation, but c'mon - how long have we been requesting offline maps? If other apps can take care of it, I'll easily switch to them to take care of the job.

Can you by chance comment a little further on these apps if you have experience with them? I'm curious how big they are when fully downloaded. Likewise I'm curious if I can download offline sections of the United States, but not the entire thing. For example, I don't want to have the entire globe downloaded if I'm only going to be traveling up and down the east coast, etc.

Co-pilot fan
I have been using co-pilot for quite some time. It works flawless on my a500 tablet. And on my Huawei cell phone. It keeps maps up to date . There live traffic does cost a bit and you would need to tether to your phone to get the Right now accuracy. I do not think you need to reconfigure the tablet in any way. If you want CO - PILOT ONLY Edit the boot init script to boot co- pilot on start. FREEZE ALL OTHER APPS OR remove them (root needed for those two things ) .
I have tried many gps apps CO -PILOT IS by far the best and most accurate. GOOGLE MAPS will have you going wrong way on one way street . or showing you driving thru a field where there is now Roads. .
good luck

Was going to ask what app you were using to get this data but I found it myself, just wanted to post the link in case anyone else wanted to know:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chartcross.gpstest
Going to give this a go on my N7 right now!
EDIT: I gave it a go and I can say that the GPS on N7 picks up satellites a heck of a lot better than my cell phone (Optimus 2X) and my actual dedicated Garmin GPS. I'm getting a connection to 10 satellites while *indoors* (couple meters from a window, sitting at a desk). It's about 39 feet accuracy from this position. I'll test it standing outside my front door and see how the accuracy improved and update this post further.
EDIT2: Standing out on my driveway I get the same accuracy as above (20 feet) connected to 12 satellites - from Toronto, Ontario.

Okay, I know its a tricky subject, however I try the question.
This is because I have read dozens x dozens pages on this forum about this subject, and I cant' figure out :
If I buy now a Galaxy S (that should be recent), do I have a change to get a GPS that is fine ?
Thanks for the answers (and sorry if I start another battle : mine is working, not mine, ...).

I don't think anybody knows for sure and Samsung has recently been very quiet about GPS and GPS fixes. If GPS is a critical feature for you than I think it is fair to say you are better off buying another phone, maybe a Desire or Desire HD.
Most likely all Galaxy S will have crap GPS hardware.
No firmware can fix this.
An external GPS receiver will fix this for in-car use though.
The Desire HD has better specs regardless.
You must also remember the most vocal of those who supports the SGS GPS (DamianGTO) has some pretty crazy claims, but seems to get pretty defensive when asked to actually prove the quality of his GPS.
The GPS is merely average on this phone, but it could be far better, and even 4 year old Garmin fitness watches seem to produce more consistent results. The GPS sometimes looks accurate, and then goes skitzo suddenly. There are FAR safer phone choices available. My mum also recently got a Desire, and not sure about the GPS, but there are minor things which are more polished than the SGS's firmware
Mind boggling this GPS isn't it?
I HAVE NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER, bought the phone in July, GPS is very much perfect.
I'm using Navigon.
Satellite locks in under a minute.
PS: tested about 500km in a car, highways, normal roads.
I too don't see any problems with the GPS in the Galaxy S, think this story has blown way out of hand. GPS locks in 30 seconds and is for the most part fairly accurate when I use NDrive. Brutmod or whatever its called doesn't work for me at all and was very unreliable. However, both Co-Pilot, NDrive and Trapster work flawlessly.
My phone's battery shows 21. Sept and my GPS is flawed.
In my experience, the GPS works ok in open spaces. Driving on roads, highways, and outside the city the GPS performs OK.
The problem is when you try to use it into de city. Then it seems unable to keep lock on satellites while you're moving around streets sorrounded by buildings.
It also performs better some days than others for unknown reasons.
In my opinion. If GPS is important for you, buying any other phone will be a safer choice.
I'd advise one thing, ask if you can take it out for a "spin", walk / run / drive around for a while and record the track. You'll see if you have something descent.
Apparently, some are, some aren't. Mine isn't "acurate" by itself but it is flawless with trackerbooster (can be found in app).
Between the SGS and the Desire HD, the SGS has the better display and a waayyy better GPU. DHD has a better cam (as per specs, we should see pictures from both to be sure) and a camera flash (but SGS has night mode, wich is, in my opinion, way more wrorthy than a flash)
GPS is basically average.. its not without flaws.. far from it.. but it works ok in most cases. It's just not a super great GPS. I suppose the hardware is nice and could be made to work better (it might also be interferences due to the hardware placement/RFI/etc..) but that's not perfect yet and probably wont ever be
It's brilliant(!)

Andrew stop posting lies about me in every gps tread.
OP: i would say you can't get a better phone then sgs. But you can be unlucky and get a bad phone.
Its not only gps that can be broken, but this is how products works in mass production. There will always be products that's bad that slips through the checks. But there will also be products that's is much better then it should normal be.
Im lucky to have 2 of them.
But try the phone out when you buy it.
Try the gps and make sure you 3 button combo works.
If it look god buy it.
If it looks bad, ask to try an other phone. If they don't let you, just go to an other store.
I did have an iphone 4 to, but i did sell that. Still got the iphone 3gs left.
So i can compare with them to.
The sgs is better in all area accept apps, mostly games.
But the sgs need some care to make it very good.
Mostly its a lag issue on some of them. But that easy to fix.
But a have never regret that i buy it in the first place. Also my girlfriend did buy one after she used mine.

Come on. Let's be serious about this matter.
The day you see as many people complaining about broken screens, broken batteries, broken 3G reception, or any other phone part, as you see complaining about a flawed GPS behavior, THEN you could assume that we are facing an ordinary problem, as ordinary as a faulty screen, or any other part of the hardware. But this is not the case.
I don't see loads of people claiming about every other part of the phone being broken, as I see complaining about the GPS. And more important, I don't see loads of people with other hardware problems complaining about they having exchanged the phone for a new one, or having sent it to repair, and having got back another phone with the same problem again and again. That only happens when we're talking about the GPS problem, so we can say with no doubt whatsoever that this GPS thing is way bigger than "normal mass production fault rate".
So, buying a Galaxy S with faulty GPS is not just a matter of being unlucky. Thanks to people like you who wrongly drove me to believe that the GPS problem wasn't such a big thing now I own a Galaxy S with a mostly useless GPS.

Excellent post. The GPS is certainly Galaxy's Achilles foot and anybody buying a SGS should realize that there is a significant chance that GPS on their device will not work properly. How big (or small) that chance is is a matter of debate, but it is certainly much larger than being just a random production fault that is normal with any mass produced product.
Come on guys, lets not argue pointless-ly again about GPS issue.
Some have issue, some don't so, The answert has been stated: Test it before buying it.
Test for Time having a fix
Test it for accuracy (for at least 15 min.)
Then you'll see if it works fine or not.
Bought Mine in July (Vodafone Ireland 16GB). Never had problems with GPS.
Looks like the first batches was the best
Open sky in the car:
Fast fix < 10secs
Sat Fix > 8 sats (16 in view)
accuracy: very good < 10m
navigation: No issues until now > 800Kms use

The three button combo is the way to get the phone into "download" mode so that you can flash new ROMs on it. To test it, shut down the phone, and then power up the phone while holding down volume down, home and power keys. You should see a "yellow man" and a "Downloading" text - if that appears, the phone can enter the download mode.
The GPS can only properly be tested by actually driving (or running) somewhere and seeing if Google Navigation is able to keep GPS lock and track your movement correctly. Just testing in shop whether the phone can get GPS lock is not enough.
Just try to get a fix inside the shop, phones good GPSes can (like the HTC Desire), Those with bad can't. (like mine, 3 weeks old)
Got mine in october, battery is 1.9.2010 dated, and I drive with GPS without any issue using Navigon and stock JM7
I'd say: buy from a shop with a 100% satisfied or money back logo. Then test GPS, if it's bad, return the phone. I personally think newer batches should be the most trouble free. However, there are surely still many old batches around even if you buy it today, you could get one of them...
I'm happy with SGS, won't get the desire (screen too ugly compared) and the HD is too big for my taste. But I got a good batch phone

Unfortunately, it isn't really that easy, unless you know someone who owns one
It isn't something you can test accurately in store. Either way, my advice is still that it's better to be safe than sorry. Even if the issue is hardware related, there is no way of knowing if the unit you buy works, the software on the Desire was heaps better for me (and so the Desire HD is probably even better).
Problems:
extruding screen with the odd noise when you touch it
flashing graphics and lines flicker across screen
sometimes unresponsive when clicking icons
can't detect ad hoc networks (meaning lack of connection to internet phones, esp. Nokia, Symbian)
this coupled with no 3G connection (i.e. sim), gives connection on the move an added complication
drops internet connections too often for comfort
white graphics on the screen, look yellow
some bad lighting around edges of screen
apps in app store might not be for this device (more of an issue for basic users, but still frustrating),
app store lacks a Nexus 7 only feature.
cant turn it on and get started, without internet connection (that was annoying)
a camera, but you cant take pictures with it, need to get an app first (not user friendly for non techi people)
no music store
8 gb space but really its 5.8gb (they should stop selling things like that. 8gb space should mean that you get what it says in 'space').
slight strange issue; purple metal edging (why purple tint?)
poor quality speaker
should have called it something other than Nexus, hard to search internet for things specific to this device.
things i now miss and should have realised I would have, before I bought it:
- no rear camera, makes photo taking stupidly difficult.
- no memory card slot
- things are geared toward the cloud, but with all the internet issues it often means you can't connect to files on the go.

You got a bad unit. Happens to iPads too. For what it's worth a good unit works fantastic.
As for the bottom half of your list.... you are really complaining about no memory slot and rear camera? And that there isn't really 8GB of space? EVERY device does that. There is a music store, it's called Google Music, but feel free to use Amazon MP3 as well. You seem to have let yourself down.....
Mine is perfect and everything I thought it would be, sorry for your problems.
It sounds to me like you wanted an iPad and tried to buy the nexus to save some money.
Go ahead and get an iPad, Android is more for people who like to tinker and modify and have choices. Apple works out really well for people who want a system laid out for them that's real simple and dummy and non techie friendly. I buy them for my parents for that reason. I also have an iPad and an iPhone 4S so when I tell you that you and Android arent a match I'm not meaning any harm.
Make sure you get the 3G model iPad because they are much more picky about WiFi tether than Android.
However keep in mind that many of the negatives you don't like about Android are identical with the iPad.
And android has the play store which is a music store so I'm confused on that one and some of the other complaints, I think a lot of it was just not taking the time to learn your way around.
I'm very happy with my nexus its exceeded my expectations by far. Its in perfect condition physically and Im running an amazing custom ROM and kernel.

Hello everyone. This is a quick writeup/review on the LG Keyboard. I'm typing this up from the keyboard, in fact!
Pros:
1) First off, let me say that the build quality is excellent! The keyboard looks and feels like its made from some expensive and premium plastic. It has sort of a metallic look to it.
2) They keyboard is small however the keys are big and spacious enough. You can carry this easily in a bag, since it has a flat profile and a keyboard case to go with it. The keyboard case also doubles as a stand for your tablet fr those of you going commando and not wanting to put a case on it.
3) As for typing: The keys are chiclet raised style keys. They are spaced apart and big enough to type on comfortably.
4) There is absolutely no lag whatsoever between typing the character and it appearing on the screen. Sometimes, however, there are missed keys, as in you'll have to hit a letter twice before it appears. This occurs very rarely and also depends on how much of a "wirelessly" busy area you are in.
5) When using this keyboard, it behaves exactly like a desktop keyboard. As in, when you're type on a form with multiple fields, and you press tab or shift+tab, you move from one field to the next. Hitting spacebar on a radio button or a check mark box allows you to check that area off. Alt+Tabbing is also programmed in.You can hit Ctrl+T to open a new tab. There are plenty more, but these are the few that I've noticed that I thought I should mention.
I don't know if thats the result of programming on the keyboard or the OS that does this, but its still awesome either way.
6) Full volume control as well as the ability to pause, play, skip and go back on playlists.
Cons
1) The keyboard has a number of Fn function keys, each of which calls up a specific app. There is one for email, web browser, calendar, and music. As for email, I'm using the AOSP email app, and when pressing that button, nothing happens. This might be different with other people who are using other types of email apps.
2) The web browser isn't called either
Others: This might be good or bad depending on the person
1) As for calendar, only the stock calendar is launched
2) I've set my default music playing app to Player Pro, however when pressing this, it only brings up the music app installed from google. However, to be fair, I must say that after you have a playlist going, regardless of which music player your using, you can still control the playlist (pause, play, skip, go to previous song, etc)
3) I've been typing on this with wireless on and music playing. In the past 30 minutes, battery has gone down by about 7%.
Conclusion:
I should mention that this keyboard was sold for Android 3.0+, however it was intended for 3.0. As such, it isn't 100% compatible with 4.1.1 (I'd say its 95% ). Hopefully someone can figure out a way on mapping the some of the keys that weren't working. Regardless, the doesn't stop this from being a good keyboard and an excellent buy if you're someone who needs a physical keyboard and types a lot.

Nice writeup. Been lookin for a reason to get this. My HP touchpad Bluetooth keyboard just doesn't cut it working on android.
A little shocking about your battery drop like that in only 30 minutes.. any improvement or change with this, now that you are using it more?
Been eyeing up the refurbished ones on eBay for $33.00.
Can you post more pics with the cover on it? Next to the 7 ?

Really interested in this keyboard, if only the price weren't so high. Does the stand work while you have your case on?

Ah, thank you!
But in order for that method to work, you need to be rooted and install a few APKs. I was hoping to do this without cluttering my apps drawer.
Edit: New pictures have been added to the original post. As of right now, I'm uploading a video onto youtube on the keyboard and typing. However, I MUST warn you all: I tried looking back at my camera work and I realized there's quite a bit of movement. I kinda got motion sick and have a headache (lol) so this is a fair warning to you. Just skip around throughout the video.
Video and more pictures added!
i have the chance to get the ipad variant of this quite cheaply (can't find the android version in the uk anyway)

It works, my wife has one. I had some weirdness the first time I connected it, the shift key kept "sticking" but after that it was okay. Control, Alt works.. Some of the media stuff works, including launching some stock apps.. Overall it was okay once it started working right, not sure if it'll happen randomly or just that "first time".
Android will have more Android-specific functions, like Home, Back, Recents, etc... but you can mostly get by on the keyboard, especially if you don't mind poking the screen now and then.

I've been eyeing the same thing, except on amazon. lol
OP: Can you open a note taking app and take a picture of the setup from normal typing distance?
I want to get this keyboard so I can take some notes in class, but my main concern was that I wouldn't be able to see the text or I would have to magnify so much that barely any text fits on the screen at a time.
(Yea, Transformer is better for this, but this is only one of many things I want to do. And I feel the N7 is better for.. everything else. lol)

Sorry, I just realized what you were saying.
As far as normal typing distance is concerned, why don't you put your tablet at various distances and see if you can read it. I'd imagine this would be a personal thing that is different from person to person.
I just got mine in the mail. Perfect plug and play functionality! The browser shortcut button DOES work with the AOSP browser! For some reason the email shortcut isnt linking to either my gmail or to my email cliemt - may try to manually map this later. Otherwise the keyboard is perfectly responsive, portable size while maintaining the full sized keyboard feel. I love it Highly recomend it to anyone looking for a portable bluetooth keyboard for their N7!
Hi there. I'm new here and this is my first post.
This keyboard is surprisingly good. I originally wanted a keyboard folio but they are too small. I gave the Logitech one a chance and I'm very happy with the responsiveness and the overall feel. I touch type so I need the keys to feel a certain way to type properly and this keyboard works very well.

Logitech Tablet Keyboards review for android and for Ipad tested with PC
Hi guys,
I bought both the ipad version and android version of the keyboard and did some comparison using IPAD3, NEXUS 7, and Windows 7 PC.
Please have a look at it and let me know if you have any questions
I cant seem to post video because I am new so please copy and paste
"/watch?v=7F_VhaE3xrQ&list=UUvhoR5J6mXRNCLDfEmYsDjA&index=1&feature=plcp" after typing in youtube.com
or
search for "logitech tablet keyboard for android and ipad function" and look for TH0RFan
Its a bit long-winded but I did specify on comment which device is tested so you can fast foward to particular sections.
I wish I had better video capturing equipment but for the time being my SD1300 will have to do.
Cheers,
This keyboard gave me trouble to the point I gave up on it and sold it. It would timeout quickly, fail to pair about 30% of the time, and ddđooooooooooo tttttthhhhiiiiiiiiiiiiiissss nnoooowww annnnnnnnddddd tthheennnnnnnnnnn.
Several calls to Logitech later and I decided to just get rid of it.
My brother got this for his Tab 10.1 and I tried it out on my Nexus. It works great. Perfect sized keys, feels good when typing. I even played GTA III with it. He told me battery life is awesome on it. He has to recharge once every 3 months.
UPDATE DECEMBER 16th 2012
We did it!!! Made 1.4Miles (2.25Kilometers) this morning on an unboosted Nexus 7 tablet antenna mod!!! SWEET!!!
UPDATE DECEMBER 8th 2012
We've now taken the Nexus 7 WiFi range out to 4550ft (1372meters) closing in on one mile... Should be soon
Here's the vid of the world record flight with AR.Drone/Nexus 7 and itElite PRA24014 on December 8th
December 4th 2012 update
we've taken a giant leap in range and set an all out world record for the Parrot AR.Drone 2.0... We even beat the record set by the manufacturer...
Parrot teamed up with Alcatel-Lucent Technologies to create a drone controlled by 4G instead of WiFi and they set a mark of 1000meters...
So I took a long hard look at those numbers and contacted some WiFi experts discussing range and connectivity... Did some new modifications to my drone and tablet and came out on top, beating the Parrot/Alcatel record by roughly 82meters and beating the previous WiFi-only record by over 600meters (set by a consumer flyer in Hong Kong at 470meters)
My reason for posting here is to show the awesome Nexus 7 at it's best... None of this could have been done without the Nexus 7's unique features
Easy to crack open and shut without damage
Easy to tap into Nexus internal WiFi components
Easy to flash new ROM's and kernels to achieve smooth running control software
Perfect size and ample screen quality to fly outdoors and be able to see on screen controls
Here's the video of the world record flight on December 4th 2012
As of December 1st ... The Nexus 7 antenna mod holds the AR Drone 2.0 world distance record for WiFi controlled flight at 2,400ft (732 meters)
Just thought I'd leave this here and maybe get some Nexii love
I use my Nexus 7 to fly my WiFi Drone with onscreen HD video live feed...
The drawback has been the range... with the drones weak signal and the Nexus 7 tiny antenna I was limited to 100/150ft at best
So I came up with this... Ladies and gentlemen... the Nexus 7 FlightPad

PremierTek 16dBi flat patch high gain directional WiFi antenna
This antenna setup increases my range by ten fold... now getting a thousand feet and more..
OK... I know... that antenna is huge... how bout a little smaller
Hawking 13dBi QuadPatch directional
How bout antenna and PS3 controller for flight control
Or just a simple multi polarized deal that will get full bars of WiFi internet anywhere in my house or yard from a cheap AT&T router
I know there will be haters for this setup because it ruins the flat back of the tablet making it less compact... but all this stuff just pops right off leaving the back "almost" flat... except for the PS3 controller slot mount at 1/8" thick... plus... I can jack open WiFi signals from over a mile away!!
Couple video examples of flight with the NexiiFlightPad
So anyways... go easy on me XDA... I'm 45yrs old but my mom didn't buy me the cool toys when I was a kid... so I'm overcompensating :-/
The external antenna is soldered to the motherboard antenna spring pins and the OEM WiFi antenna has been removed to eliminate interference... yes, I drilled holes in the back cover and even used epoxy and screws to attach the PS3 controller mount... but I have a spare back cover in case I want to return it to stock condition
Antenna solder points:
One word. Awesome!

I'm curious why you're using narrow-beam ant for your drone. Those panel types usually have a 30-deg beamwidth, and are for point-to-point uses. Actually, a hi-gain omni probably wouldn't work either, since it has a "flat" beamwidth. Maybe something like the below, a 9dBi panel ant w/ 60-deg beamwidth for easy aiming. The compact 5"x5" can be mounted on the tablet with a clip mount.
http://www.wpsantennas.com/id2450-r...zwhisperdirectionalindoorantennacaf94601.aspx
That's pretty sweet. I would love to add an external antenna to my (planned) car install. Having zero soldering skills, I don't know if I'm brave enough.

I guess the answer would have to be trial and error + results...
I've racked up quite a few different antenna styles while experimenting... these are just a few
Omni antennas came first because I had them lying around and they did wonderfully compared to the stock internal antenna... but then I ended up with one of those 5"x 5" patch antennas (center) and saw the advantage of directional (narrow beam , point to point... just point it at the drone) ... so I scrounged around and settled with the 7"x 7" because it gave the best range... to me, 30° beam width is big... by the time you get 100/150 yards away the error cone is huge... pointing my nexus in the general direction of the drone seems to come naturally so it's never an issue
Of course it's not the antenna I use when I'm browsing XDA on WiFi like the post I'm making right now from the little 5dBi omni (second from the right).... small and light and doesn't get in the way...
All comes down to single user preference... would be silly to market something this way because there's particular rules to follow to get the best results with that particular antenna... but it suits my style and requirements the best... I'm even thinking about going up a notch to an 18dBi patch that only has 20° beam width... just to see how far I can actually fly this thing
Oh my ****. Cool!

The main antenna bracket is a hacked up Motorola Droid Bionic windshield suction cup mount (car dock) with the suction cup removed, 4 holes drilled for the antenna connection, and some cutting and flattening for the tablet connection with epoxy and small screws...
The battery drain is partly from more aggressive flying and partly because I sped up certain parts of the video edit to keep it more interesting... that was actually a 17 minute flight compressed into 7 minutes of video without dropping any frames... just speeding up the slower moving, boring parts
That's some impressive customization there. Props

I could probly pull that off here pretty soon (this weekend?). I have a new SMA connector coming with thicker, low loss, RG174 cable... (the coax i got on there now sucks)... and I'm making a stronger SMA mount... I made the first one kind of like a kickstand to keep the tablet tilted when I set it down, but I keep feeling like I'm gonna break it off sooner or later
So yeah... I'll be sure to take pics... maybe video I guess? (Which would be better?)

Google "ar drone flyaway" before you do that. The folks who make it still haven't figured out that "wifi connection loss" should mean "gentle descent" to the ground. Apparently it means "go off in some wild direction, sometimes gaining great altitudes".

Not a problem for 99.99% of users... when mine loses WiFi connection it stops and locks on a target on the ground and hovers... giving me time to walk closer or aim my antenna better and reconnect... you really don't want it to auto land on a disconnect... what if it's over water or power lines or trees etc... the hover and wait feature works very well... the flyways are usually freezups in the onboard software getting hung up on the last command received ... or navigation board faults
but look at the numbers... with over a million units sold... and doing a YouTube search shows less than 30 flyaway videos... searching the drone forums with thousands of members, shows less than 30 or 40 posts talking about flyaways... and they're all old posts
With my friends and myself as a group we have over a dozen of these things and had one flyaway... Parrot warrantied that and sent a new unit... but that WiFi thing doesn't happen... they always just stop and hover and wait for you

My wife was way harder to deal with when I told her I needed the Nexus 7 more than air
And then she woke up one morning and saw me drilling holes in the cover and just about stabbed me with a back scratcher
But then she saw all the results and comments I get on the drone forums ... and she started thinking it was pretty cool
Then, all excited, she sent me this pic at work and I realized she was totally down with the DroneLife

The only features I really care about are AM/FM radio, Bluetooth phone, Bluetooth Audio streaming, and a working map system with reasonably good sound quality. I want it to be a system that looks like a factory install in my BMW e46 with working steering wheel controls. Really the rest of it is really just fluff to me.
Are either of the MTCB or MTCD units to the point that can be reliable?
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Mine is a Joying - MTCD - for a Jeep
AM/FM is normally something people have a problem with. I dont use that, so no biggie for me.
Bluetooth phone - fine for me, but it does route all the audio to one speaker, so it sounds a little weird, people say they hear me fine though. One annoying thing - the app takes over the screen while in use. So while you are on a call you cannot multi-task
Bluetooth Audio - works fine, steering wheel controls even work as intended. Interface is boring, but def works fine
Map system - I use Google Maps, so it works great, sometimes it lags, but that depends on what else I'm doing. I am going to try an actual navigation app with the GPS sd card adn see how that goes
Sound quality for me is vastly improved over stock. But stock was pretty much crap.
Mine is a Jeep specific unit, and it looks factory. Everyone who has seen it thought it was the factory until I started it up. One guy thought I just tweaked the factory radio, didn't realize it was an entirely different unit.
Let me ask this, what do you listen to via Bluetooth Audio?

You made the right choice. I also have an E46 and installed a MTCB unit approx a year ago and it works well. I have issue with FM but that was a problem with the original BMW Headunit too so suspect my issue is with the antenna or antenna amp. Bluetooth music streaming works well and phone hands free works fine if you install an external mic. The only downside with these units is the memory size. It's partitioned and on the MTCB units, there is only 1GB reserved for apps and 12GB wasted as storage (which hardly any apps can use). I think this has improved on MTCB (2GB instead of 1GB) but you may need to be selective on what apps you install. Let me know if you have any issues and I'll share my experience with you... welcome to the club!!!
So, unlike the Gen1 Kindle Fire, I'm guessing one can't get into the guts and repartition for more app space?
I'm still trying to figure out what 2Din HU to put in my '04 Ram. This side of the fence is more confusing that the phone sections and it's frustrating that a 2Din box has fewer features and less power than a phablet.

it really takes a lot of searching. Read all you can about what you are looking for here on XDA, try to search for it on Reddit, and even look at the resellers forum like Joying or AutoPumpkin or RoadNavi.com
First decide if you want a Universal unit or a unit specific for your car.
I drive a Jeep Wrangler, and it is not a true Double Din, so I wanted the easiest install as possible. So I chose a Jeep specific unit. That lowers the number of options. Then for my year and model, that limited it down to about RoadNavi.com, Joying, Owince, or AutoPumpkin.
I liked Eonon, but they said they couldn't verify if it would work for my model year, 2016.
So I read a ton on here and their forums, and it seemed like people had more problems with Auto Pumpkin and Owince than they did with RoadNavi or Joying.
Seems like Joying has the most users on here and various forums. So I looked into them heavily. And they were on Amazon, and it was Prime, so I figured if something went wrong, Amazon would help me out.
And even then, it is kind of a crap shoot. I have a 2016 Jeep Wrangler, I got a MTCD Android 5.1 Joying for Jeep, works perfect, couldn't be happier.
my brother in law got the exact same unit, for his 2016 Jeep Wrangler. Except he has the Premium audio package. His we can't get to work right yet.
And know what you want out of it. About 90% of the time, all I use is Spotify and some type of GPS. I switch between Google Maps, Waze, Here WeGo, and iGo. so for me, it is perfect. If you want to use 20 different apps and add ons, things might not go so smoothly.

it really takes a lot of searching.

I tend to try to run things past their mfgr's intended limits; modify them if I can or need to. Right now I'm sick of the not-quite-2DIN stock unit. Yes, I have the "premium" infinity audio. Been reading on that and don't want to rip it all out in favor of amps and such that I don't have room for, but in the same sentence will I be able to hook up the droid to the existing hardware. My P.E. skills may not be up to the task as what I think should work is not always the way things go. It seems easy looking at the wiring charts in the truck manual. Getting the output levels of the HU to match what the factory amp expects could be a challenge.
I guess what I really want from it is: Navigation (Waze), Pandora, AM/FM (AM not critical but would like it), VLC/MX Player, external USB storage, custom ROM, tether to hotspot or phone is a must. It's unlikely I'll try to do email or social media on it. Would love to have a 10" model, but my dash has a 'visor' above half the radio cutout that would probably interfere so I'm looking into 7" universal double DIN units.

Sorry, but you mean on a Jeep Wrangler?
Well good news is, based on my multiple posts on Jeep Forum, it looks like if you get the Joying Jeep unit and use the side marked "AMP"

That "AMP" side did not work with the premium Alpine system, but multiple people onJeepForum.com said it works perfectly with the Infiniti system.
I did eventually get it to work with the Alpine system, but I had to use a Joying universal harness and a PAC module and splice them together
Now if you wanted a 7 inch or 10 inch system they would probably work the same way. Just get the universal Joying harness that should come with the 7 inch or 10.1 inch. Then get a PAC or iDataLink or whatever and splice as needed
That is more labor intensive of course. If you can live with the smaller screen of the Jeep specific unit, it should be just plug and play.
And I use Waze and my phones Hotspot all the time
Also Pandora

Nice pics. Mine's a Ram quadcab though. Good info if the jeeps use the same data bus. Would be nice to keep the steering wheel buttons functional.
