Why I want my Nexus money back! - Nexus 7 General

Problems:
extruding screen with the odd noise when you touch it
flashing graphics and lines flicker across screen
sometimes unresponsive when clicking icons
can't detect ad hoc networks (meaning lack of connection to internet phones, esp. Nokia, Symbian)
this coupled with no 3G connection (i.e. sim), gives connection on the move an added complication
drops internet connections too often for comfort
white graphics on the screen, look yellow
some bad lighting around edges of screen
apps in app store might not be for this device (more of an issue for basic users, but still frustrating),
app store lacks a Nexus 7 only feature.
cant turn it on and get started, without internet connection (that was annoying)
a camera, but you cant take pictures with it, need to get an app first (not user friendly for non techi people)
no music store
8 gb space but really its 5.8gb (they should stop selling things like that. 8gb space should mean that you get what it says in 'space').
slight strange issue; purple metal edging (why purple tint?)
poor quality speaker
should have called it something other than Nexus, hard to search internet for things specific to this device.
things i now miss and should have realised I would have, before I bought it:
- no rear camera, makes photo taking stupidly difficult.
- no memory card slot
- things are geared toward the cloud, but with all the internet issues it often means you can't connect to files on the go.
Rival to iPad? No way, why I didn't dig deeper into my pocket, I don't know.
Rival to Kindle Fire? only in power but bad quality control by google has let it down, it's a no from me.
Will I be sending it back? Yes.
Do you also feel as let down as I do? Answers below:

You got a bad unit. Happens to iPads too. For what it's worth a good unit works fantastic.
As for the bottom half of your list.... you are really complaining about no memory slot and rear camera? And that there isn't really 8GB of space? EVERY device does that. There is a music store, it's called Google Music, but feel free to use Amazon MP3 as well. You seem to have let yourself down.....

Mine is perfect and everything I thought it would be, sorry for your problems.

It sounds to me like you wanted an iPad and tried to buy the nexus to save some money.
Go ahead and get an iPad, Android is more for people who like to tinker and modify and have choices. Apple works out really well for people who want a system laid out for them that's real simple and dummy and non techie friendly. I buy them for my parents for that reason. I also have an iPad and an iPhone 4S so when I tell you that you and Android arent a match I'm not meaning any harm.
Make sure you get the 3G model iPad because they are much more picky about WiFi tether than Android.
However keep in mind that many of the negatives you don't like about Android are identical with the iPad.
And android has the play store which is a music store so I'm confused on that one and some of the other complaints, I think a lot of it was just not taking the time to learn your way around.
I'm very happy with my nexus its exceeded my expectations by far. Its in perfect condition physically and Im running an amazing custom ROM and kernel.

Wow. Just wow. ...First post. No way this is real.

Sounds like a troll to me, listing things it doesn't have that are clearly stated in all reviews and spec sheets - yet you label it all as negatives & utter surprise.
Also, where is the proof of your problems?

That never gets old.

I don't even own Nexus 7 yet, and I am still debating whether or not to get one, but this is obviously trolling. Same power as the Kindle Fire that doesn't even have Bluetooth? On what planet? Lol

Love those who join a forum just to post how they dislike something, and then never to be seen again.
Mine goes everywhere with me. I don't take pictures with a 1.2MP camera (what is this, 1998?)

Almost the entire list of "missing features" were never even speculated to be in this tablet. You fail at being a smart consumer. I chuckled. Was a joke, right?

Should I buy galaxy s? And y did u buy it?

I wana buy this phone but ppl say it has gps problems and laggy but what exactly is wrong with gps? And is the phone fast? Does captivate has these problems ? Do u need app to SD for this phone or everything goes on internal memory ? Please help me pick and y did u guys bought galaxy s for ? Please share
Bought it over the Desire on reviews, looks and GPU.
After seeing how laggy the Desire is first hand and how horrible it looks, I don't regret my choice one bit. The Galaxy S is an incredible phone.

Used to have an HTC Magic (heavily modified) and I needed something else since ROGERS wasn't being good to me and HTC was trying to lock out the SPL. I switched to Bell because of their deals and got the Galaxy S because of it's interface, open recovery, style, and feel.
GPS: It's perfectly fine for me, never had a problem and it tracks perfectly. People seem to have problems but I don't see them with mine.
Laggy: Feels perfectly smooth, I came from an HTC Magic and going to a Galaxy S is night and day; it feels great for me. Some people are just hopping onto the band wagon saying it's laggy and forcing themselves to believe that, others though legitimately have lag, although I am not one.
SD: Everything goes into the internal memory; no A2SD yet until Froyo (official) comes out everywhere then it might have it, but as of now, no A2SD.
Usually people posts on forums because of problems, or just because they want to play with their phone,
Well, if you observe the first page of xda, there are 100people viewing NOne forums, 120 HTC Desire, and...
500 or more on Galaxy S,
don`t know if this means problems or popularity, just a tip..

Try to remember that Galaxy S is on A LOT of providers meaning we have people of all kinds on the Galaxy S forum compared to NOne where you had to buy full price from Google themselves or Desire where it's only on one/few providers.
I got the Galaxy S for it's specs. I live in Canada so phones like the Evo and Droid X were out of range for me because of CDMA. Galaxy S, with it's nice screen, good processor, and GPU seemed like a natural choice for me for my first smartphone (especially since I play games and watch movies on my phone alot.
Although there are problems with the GPS, I've found it to be usable and secondary GPS programs like CoPilot seem to make the problem a little softer. In terms of some lag, there are multiple lag fixes that can be applied.
Only thing I don't like with the phone is the looks. Everyone who sees it thinks I have an Iphone
All in all a good phone with a lot of potential if you're willing to put the time into it (which was actually sort of fun for me) and don't mind the looks.
It depends what you want it for. The screen for me is by far the main selling point, but as an all round device I honestly couldn't recommend it to anyone. Sounds harsh, but I've just sold mine and got an n1, and the n1 runs rings round it I'm afraid.
The sgs simply has too many niggly bugs which waters down the ownership experience.
I bought my Galaxy S because it seemed like the best phone on the market, even with the issues you can read on the internet, including these forums.
It came with JM2 firmware and I have to say that it worked surprisingly well after reading all that stuff about lag: I barely experienced any lag at all and there weren't many bugs. The biggest complaints I had were about KIES and faults with Android in general. Of course, it would have been nice to have a phone with less crapware (Aldiko eBook? Layar?) installed on stock firmware.
In overall, JM2 was a pleasant version to be on - the biggest lag I experienced was when rebooting the phone (and that was annoying - it took minutes to get it functional)!
However, that didn't excuse Samsung's delays on Froyo. Now that it's here, I installed it right away - and I can't say that I was very pleased at first.
As my phone booted to the new version, everything was intact except my homescreen. I can deal with that - but after I played around more it seemed very laggy in general. The new zoomout feature in the app drawer ran at a maximum of 10 frames per second. The Market was missing.
This is obviously inexcusable for an update that is supposed to fix issues and is touted as "improving performance" in a Samsung press release. Especially the issue of Android Market just missing - how is the average customer going to figure out how to get it back?
I simply caved in and did a factory reset after backing up some stuff. I'm glad to say that this restored my phone to how it was on JM2 - very responsive in general. I used AppBrain to tap through tens of install dialogs to get all my apps back, and now it's just like before.
In overall I can recommend the phone, but Samsung can (and needs to) do better. On the hardware side, three things: the plastic back cover creaks too much (but I use a silicon case, so that's not an issue for me). A camera flash would be nice, and a dedicated button for it would make shooting pictures easier too.
The lag issue seems to be more of an problem with Samsung's marketing department than with their engineers - it wouldn't look good to ditch their own filesystem. But then again, in my personal experience I believe that complaints about it are greatly exaggerated.
I'm from canada, still running original rom (2.1 JH2)
got it for the quality of the pictures; Night mode is amazing, the pictures I've taken with it shows more than my own eyes!! I was sceptical at first because of the lack of flash light, but francly, a flash can only light a certain part... Night mode shows it all!!
also 3D processor is wayyyy more than anything else out there. you can do anything graphic on this baby! Videos are fluent, using gallery, taking pictures, gaming, etc!
Only down part I can see is the GPS (at first) is kind of all over the place. Not realy helpfull when you're using the device to keep track of run (workout and such), but after fidling with the settings, it's pretty descent!
bonus was the amazing Super Oled...this thing is bright and precise! Also, the device is pretty thin (the thinnest around?), since the display and the touch sensor are all integrated.
And you can see more "activity" in the SGS section for the main reason that they sold 5 millions of those babyes, surely you'll get more activity than most (not selling as much). And, on android, more users means more devloppers!

that is the feature i like the most about the phone
I do have 2 now.
The bad part of sgs is that there are phones that are bad.
They are like small computers and do sometimes not what they should.
The good part is that you get the best hardware any phone has.
I do own iphone to. But sgs bet them on all area accept for apps.
Sgs has a fantastic screen.
Its nice to handel.
If you like to tweak and take time to learn about the phone. You can't get any better phone.
If you read here you will se people has problem but there almost always a solution in them.
I would never trade my sgs away. It the best smartphone on the market.

For me the SGS is disappointing.
My main reason to buy this phone was the hardware.
It realy has great specs and outperforms any other phone.
But when it comes to daily use it's not as reliable.
I read that GPS wasn't that good but nevertheless decided to buy this phone.
I had hope that it can be fixed. But for me, the GPS is completely unreliable.
In car it takes ages till I get a lock. And during the drive it's most of the time ~10m behind me.
And when I am not constantly on the route that it suggests me, it losts the lock and need to find me again, which takes ages.
I can't use any function that relays on GPS.
The last days I have more problems than ever. Even standing on the street it doesn't get any lock.
Thinking to buy me a "slower" but more reliable smartphone, like the HTC Desire.
It has some goddamn software issues. ( lag, gps. )
But it's probably the only affordable device that has a WORKING multitouch controller, and it also has the most powerful GPU, and a CPU that matches the best. ( It's actually slightly better, but JIT isn't optimised for Hummingbird )
So it's some bloody good hardware that goes with some not to good software to make an alright phone.
With a fair bit of tinkering/rooting/etc the phone is easily the best at the moment.

I Found Back Camera Module Space Prepared, Why Finally It Is Not There ?

Hey, guys, I had just checked the ifixit teardown of Nexus 7,
I found that the back cover / PCB / bracket had prepare the space for back camera module.
It is pretty clear on this picture from iFixit :

But finally, there is no back camera module on Nexus 7.
So anyone know the reason ?
Is it because of the cost ?
Thanks.

Because smartphones.
Well the obvious guess is that it would've been on the ME370T at a higher price point but didn't make it here. Add it to the list along with microSD slot and HDMI output of features that were probably nuked to bring the price down.
It's missing for the same reason why the Galaxy Nexus is missing a SD card reader, even though there was a slot carved out for it in the housing. It keeps the cost down, and it was deemed an unnecessary component by Google. The slot still remains because it costs a lot of money to redesign and re-manufacture the injection molds and the shape of the system board, so instead they prefer to just re-use the existing parts whenever possible.
If you don't like the lack of features, wait until Google makes a premium version later.

yeah, seriously. a friend was asking me if he should purchase the nexus 7 and was curious about the camera. when i told him that it's not a camera that you'd normally use to take pictures with he was saddened and almost decided against purchasing one. once i told him that his new smartphone can take photos and auto upload them (thus allowing him to view them on the nexus 7) he seemed relieved. people are weird.
how people don't realize how ridiculously stupid people look taking pictures with tablets is beyond me.
Yeah augmented reality would be the only reason to want in, but to 3g so might as well use your phone.
My current tablet has a rear camera only used once and it was like this " wow this is bad"
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
The only use of a rear-facing camera that I've found for a tablet is during video chats. I eventually bore of looking at myself, and just point it to the room / kids running around to give the conversation a sense of.... atmosphere.
Nuked due to cost I'd agree, though.
I honestly don't get why people would want to take serious photos with a tablet. If you have a smartphone, use that. Better yet, just buy a real camera.
I was in Egypt at some of the spectacular locations of the temples, and this woman kept holding up her ipad to take photos, lol! Obviously I had my bridge camera on me.
The only thing I use the camera on my tablet for is to scan a document, that feature will be missed but my phone does the same thing.
The camera in the average mobile phone blows away most tablet cameras. Since most people have mobile phones, it makes the need for rear-facing tablet camera 1) redundant and 2) pointless.
I would agree that it is not on there due to cost saving and also the fact the a) tablets are a horrible form factor for taking pictures, b) the pictures it would take would not be any better (if not worse) than what most phones already do and, c) google probably shares the opinion that people look ridiculous while taking pictures with tablets (espically when the ipad first came out)

incorrect. the galaxy nexus has no SD slot as google wanted to refine the end user experience. when people use slow SD cards, it slows the entire system down.
google never put the slot there in the first place. the nexus is a premium device and it has premium features. there is no way they would have 'removed it to save cost'
and although I am pretty sure there is no SD cutout in the frame... i would be curious to see a picture... perhaps find a picture from iFixit and post.

that's what they said when people started taking pictures using the LCD screen on the back of a point&shoot camera instead of the viewfinder - in a time when everybody used the viewfinder.
that's also what they said when the first camera was integrated into a phone. Why would anyone want to put a camera into a phone? Now, it's one of the top features in a smartphone.
---------- Post added at 06:58 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:38 PM ----------
About the comments on the merits of a rear-facing camera on a tablet. All I can say that if it's there, people will use it.
I had to sit through my daughters gymnastics competition. A whole 2 hours worth to see her 2 minute routine. Unfortunately, I don't have a tablet, but many others did - most of which were ipads. I can tell you that these people used their ipads, instead of their camcorders, phones, or digital cameras, simply because it was there and they were using it at the time (to play games or read books or whatever). It may look stupid, but I'm sure they really don't care. What mattered to them is that they were able to capture the moment and replay it on a 10" screen... not a 2.5" screen or a 4" screen. What's more interesting is that one parent shot the video on the ipad of his daughter, and later on the daughter reviewed the video and actually started to edit it on the device.
Convenience...
Well the picture preview shown on a Tablet would be more true to the results then the small LCD on the back of a camera or even a smart phone. Plus the added benefit to edit the picture on the spot with advance photo editing software not available on a camera itself. Though the cameras on the back of most consumer tablets are up to par right now, I think its quite possible professional cameras in the next few years will be more tablet like with handle like apparatuses on the side with a thumb button for take the picture and a changeable lens on the front. Regular consumers would of course have some thing the size of a smart phone of course for portability. But a professional would no doubt love a 10 inch or larger high def display on his/her camera with instant editing and the ability to she the results or email them to the publisher on the spot. This can save cost and overheard.

Precisely. Every time I see someone complain about how they can't take photos with a tablet, I automatically think "tool". Seriously. You look like the biggest douche in the world holding a book-sized screen up to take a ****ty picture for Instagram.
When professional photographers start espousing the awesomeness of tablet photography - then maybe I'll take notice. But with the compact and high-quality nature of both smartphones and newer DSLRs...I'm not really expecting that to ever happen.
I think my old 110 style film camera when I was a kid took better photos than any Tablet/phone camera.
I'm happy Google didn't put it in and just gave us a front camera.

Logitech Tablet Keyboard for Android Review

Hello everyone. This is a quick writeup/review on the LG Keyboard. I'm typing this up from the keyboard, in fact!
Pros:
1) First off, let me say that the build quality is excellent! The keyboard looks and feels like its made from some expensive and premium plastic. It has sort of a metallic look to it.
2) They keyboard is small however the keys are big and spacious enough. You can carry this easily in a bag, since it has a flat profile and a keyboard case to go with it. The keyboard case also doubles as a stand for your tablet fr those of you going commando and not wanting to put a case on it.
3) As for typing: The keys are chiclet raised style keys. They are spaced apart and big enough to type on comfortably.
4) There is absolutely no lag whatsoever between typing the character and it appearing on the screen. Sometimes, however, there are missed keys, as in you'll have to hit a letter twice before it appears. This occurs very rarely and also depends on how much of a "wirelessly" busy area you are in.
5) When using this keyboard, it behaves exactly like a desktop keyboard. As in, when you're type on a form with multiple fields, and you press tab or shift+tab, you move from one field to the next. Hitting spacebar on a radio button or a check mark box allows you to check that area off. Alt+Tabbing is also programmed in.You can hit Ctrl+T to open a new tab. There are plenty more, but these are the few that I've noticed that I thought I should mention.
I don't know if thats the result of programming on the keyboard or the OS that does this, but its still awesome either way.
6) Full volume control as well as the ability to pause, play, skip and go back on playlists.
Cons
1) The keyboard has a number of Fn function keys, each of which calls up a specific app. There is one for email, web browser, calendar, and music. As for email, I'm using the AOSP email app, and when pressing that button, nothing happens. This might be different with other people who are using other types of email apps.
2) The web browser isn't called either
Others: This might be good or bad depending on the person
1) As for calendar, only the stock calendar is launched
2) I've set my default music playing app to Player Pro, however when pressing this, it only brings up the music app installed from google. However, to be fair, I must say that after you have a playlist going, regardless of which music player your using, you can still control the playlist (pause, play, skip, go to previous song, etc)
3) I've been typing on this with wireless on and music playing. In the past 30 minutes, battery has gone down by about 7%.
Conclusion:
I should mention that this keyboard was sold for Android 3.0+, however it was intended for 3.0. As such, it isn't 100% compatible with 4.1.1 (I'd say its 95% ). Hopefully someone can figure out a way on mapping the some of the keys that weren't working. Regardless, the doesn't stop this from being a good keyboard and an excellent buy if you're someone who needs a physical keyboard and types a lot.

WARNING: I was using a heavy DSLR camera one handed while recording this video...so as a result, there's more shaking and moving of the camera than I would have hoped so you may get a headache or some motion sickness .
Regardless, the video is still good enough to showcase the virtues of this keyboard!

Nice writeup. Been lookin for a reason to get this. My HP touchpad Bluetooth keyboard just doesn't cut it working on android.
A little shocking about your battery drop like that in only 30 minutes.. any improvement or change with this, now that you are using it more?
Been eyeing up the refurbished ones on eBay for $33.00.
Can you post more pics with the cover on it? Next to the 7 ?

Really interested in this keyboard, if only the price weren't so high. Does the stand work while you have your case on?

Perhaps you should take a look at this? http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=159538
Ah, thank you!
But in order for that method to work, you need to be rooted and install a few APKs. I was hoping to do this without cluttering my apps drawer.
Edit: New pictures have been added to the original post. As of right now, I'm uploading a video onto youtube on the keyboard and typing. However, I MUST warn you all: I tried looking back at my camera work and I realized there's quite a bit of movement. I kinda got motion sick and have a headache (lol) so this is a fair warning to you. Just skip around throughout the video.
Video and more pictures added!
i have the chance to get the ipad variant of this quite cheaply (can't find the android version in the uk anyway)
does anyone know if the ipad version would work with android?

It works, my wife has one. I had some weirdness the first time I connected it, the shift key kept "sticking" but after that it was okay. Control, Alt works.. Some of the media stuff works, including launching some stock apps.. Overall it was okay once it started working right, not sure if it'll happen randomly or just that "first time".
Android will have more Android-specific functions, like Home, Back, Recents, etc... but you can mostly get by on the keyboard, especially if you don't mind poking the screen now and then.

I've been eyeing the same thing, except on amazon. lol
OP: Can you open a note taking app and take a picture of the setup from normal typing distance?
I want to get this keyboard so I can take some notes in class, but my main concern was that I wouldn't be able to see the text or I would have to magnify so much that barely any text fits on the screen at a time.
(Yea, Transformer is better for this, but this is only one of many things I want to do. And I feel the N7 is better for.. everything else. lol)

Sure. I'll do it tomorrow night.
However, I can tell you that if you use this like a laptop, you can easily read and see the text.

Sorry, I just realized what you were saying.
As far as normal typing distance is concerned, why don't you put your tablet at various distances and see if you can read it. I'd imagine this would be a personal thing that is different from person to person.
I just got mine in the mail. Perfect plug and play functionality! The browser shortcut button DOES work with the AOSP browser! For some reason the email shortcut isnt linking to either my gmail or to my email cliemt - may try to manually map this later. Otherwise the keyboard is perfectly responsive, portable size while maintaining the full sized keyboard feel. I love it Highly recomend it to anyone looking for a portable bluetooth keyboard for their N7!
Hi there. I'm new here and this is my first post.
This keyboard is surprisingly good. I originally wanted a keyboard folio but they are too small. I gave the Logitech one a chance and I'm very happy with the responsiveness and the overall feel. I touch type so I need the keys to feel a certain way to type properly and this keyboard works very well.

Logitech Tablet Keyboards review for android and for Ipad tested with PC
Hi guys,
I bought both the ipad version and android version of the keyboard and did some comparison using IPAD3, NEXUS 7, and Windows 7 PC.
Please have a look at it and let me know if you have any questions
I cant seem to post video because I am new so please copy and paste
"/watch?v=7F_VhaE3xrQ&list=UUvhoR5J6mXRNCLDfEmYsDjA&index=1&feature=plcp" after typing in youtube.com
or
search for "logitech tablet keyboard for android and ipad function" and look for TH0RFan
Its a bit long-winded but I did specify on comment which device is tested so you can fast foward to particular sections.
I wish I had better video capturing equipment but for the time being my SD1300 will have to do.
Cheers,
This keyboard gave me trouble to the point I gave up on it and sold it. It would timeout quickly, fail to pair about 30% of the time, and ddđooooooooooo tttttthhhhiiiiiiiiiiiiiissss nnoooowww annnnnnnnddddd tthheennnnnnnnnnn.
Several calls to Logitech later and I decided to just get rid of it.
My brother got this for his Tab 10.1 and I tried it out on my Nexus. It works great. Perfect sized keys, feels good when typing. I even played GTA III with it. He told me battery life is awesome on it. He has to recharge once every 3 months.

Nexus 7 WiFi antenna mod CRUSHES WORLD RECORD!!! 12/16/2012 THE MAGIC MILE

UPDATE DECEMBER 16th 2012
We did it!!! Made 1.4Miles (2.25Kilometers) this morning on an unboosted Nexus 7 tablet antenna mod!!! SWEET!!!
UPDATE DECEMBER 8th 2012
We've now taken the Nexus 7 WiFi range out to 4550ft (1372meters) closing in on one mile... Should be soon
Here's the vid of the world record flight with AR.Drone/Nexus 7 and itElite PRA24014 on December 8th
December 4th 2012 update
we've taken a giant leap in range and set an all out world record for the Parrot AR.Drone 2.0... We even beat the record set by the manufacturer...
Parrot teamed up with Alcatel-Lucent Technologies to create a drone controlled by 4G instead of WiFi and they set a mark of 1000meters...
So I took a long hard look at those numbers and contacted some WiFi experts discussing range and connectivity... Did some new modifications to my drone and tablet and came out on top, beating the Parrot/Alcatel record by roughly 82meters and beating the previous WiFi-only record by over 600meters (set by a consumer flyer in Hong Kong at 470meters)
My reason for posting here is to show the awesome Nexus 7 at it's best... None of this could have been done without the Nexus 7's unique features
Easy to crack open and shut without damage
Easy to tap into Nexus internal WiFi components
Easy to flash new ROM's and kernels to achieve smooth running control software
Perfect size and ample screen quality to fly outdoors and be able to see on screen controls
Here's the video of the world record flight on December 4th 2012
As of December 1st ... The Nexus 7 antenna mod holds the AR Drone 2.0 world distance record for WiFi controlled flight at 2,400ft (732 meters)
Just thought I'd leave this here and maybe get some Nexii love
I use my Nexus 7 to fly my WiFi Drone with onscreen HD video live feed...
The drawback has been the range... with the drones weak signal and the Nexus 7 tiny antenna I was limited to 100/150ft at best
So I came up with this... Ladies and gentlemen... the Nexus 7 FlightPad

PremierTek 16dBi flat patch high gain directional WiFi antenna
This antenna setup increases my range by ten fold... now getting a thousand feet and more..
OK... I know... that antenna is huge... how bout a little smaller
Hawking 13dBi QuadPatch directional
How bout antenna and PS3 controller for flight control
Or just a simple multi polarized deal that will get full bars of WiFi internet anywhere in my house or yard from a cheap AT&T router
I know there will be haters for this setup because it ruins the flat back of the tablet making it less compact... but all this stuff just pops right off leaving the back "almost" flat... except for the PS3 controller slot mount at 1/8" thick... plus... I can jack open WiFi signals from over a mile away!!
Couple video examples of flight with the NexiiFlightPad
So anyways... go easy on me XDA... I'm 45yrs old but my mom didn't buy me the cool toys when I was a kid... so I'm overcompensating :-/
The external antenna is soldered to the motherboard antenna spring pins and the OEM WiFi antenna has been removed to eliminate interference... yes, I drilled holes in the back cover and even used epoxy and screws to attach the PS3 controller mount... but I have a spare back cover in case I want to return it to stock condition
Antenna solder points:
One word. Awesome!

I'm curious why you're using narrow-beam ant for your drone. Those panel types usually have a 30-deg beamwidth, and are for point-to-point uses. Actually, a hi-gain omni probably wouldn't work either, since it has a "flat" beamwidth. Maybe something like the below, a 9dBi panel ant w/ 60-deg beamwidth for easy aiming. The compact 5"x5" can be mounted on the tablet with a clip mount.

That's pretty sweet. I would love to add an external antenna to my (planned) car install. Having zero soldering skills, I don't know if I'm brave enough.

I guess the answer would have to be trial and error + results...
I've racked up quite a few different antenna styles while experimenting... these are just a few
Omni antennas came first because I had them lying around and they did wonderfully compared to the stock internal antenna... but then I ended up with one of those 5"x 5" patch antennas (center) and saw the advantage of directional (narrow beam , point to point... just point it at the drone) ... so I scrounged around and settled with the 7"x 7" because it gave the best range... to me, 30° beam width is big... by the time you get 100/150 yards away the error cone is huge... pointing my nexus in the general direction of the drone seems to come naturally so it's never an issue
Of course it's not the antenna I use when I'm browsing XDA on WiFi like the post I'm making right now from the little 5dBi omni (second from the right).... small and light and doesn't get in the way...
All comes down to single user preference... would be silly to market something this way because there's particular rules to follow to get the best results with that particular antenna... but it suits my style and requirements the best... I'm even thinking about going up a notch to an 18dBi patch that only has 20° beam width... just to see how far I can actually fly this thing
Oh my ****. Cool!

Funny how you can watch the battery dropping when you sped it up

The main antenna bracket is a hacked up Motorola Droid Bionic windshield suction cup mount (car dock) with the suction cup removed, 4 holes drilled for the antenna connection, and some cutting and flattening for the tablet connection with epoxy and small screws...
The battery drain is partly from more aggressive flying and partly because I sped up certain parts of the video edit to keep it more interesting... that was actually a 17 minute flight compressed into 7 minutes of video without dropping any frames... just speeding up the slower moving, boring parts
That's some impressive customization there. Props

I could probly pull that off here pretty soon (this weekend?). I have a new SMA connector coming with thicker, low loss, RG174 cable... (the coax i got on there now sucks)... and I'm making a stronger SMA mount... I made the first one kind of like a kickstand to keep the tablet tilted when I set it down, but I keep feeling like I'm gonna break it off sooner or later
So yeah... I'll be sure to take pics... maybe video I guess? (Which would be better?)

Google "ar drone flyaway" before you do that. The folks who make it still haven't figured out that "wifi connection loss" should mean "gentle descent" to the ground. Apparently it means "go off in some wild direction, sometimes gaining great altitudes".

Not a problem for 99.99% of users... when mine loses WiFi connection it stops and locks on a target on the ground and hovers... giving me time to walk closer or aim my antenna better and reconnect... you really don't want it to auto land on a disconnect... what if it's over water or power lines or trees etc... the hover and wait feature works very well... the flyways are usually freezups in the onboard software getting hung up on the last command received ... or navigation board faults
but look at the numbers... with over a million units sold... and doing a YouTube search shows less than 30 flyaway videos... searching the drone forums with thousands of members, shows less than 30 or 40 posts talking about flyaways... and they're all old posts
With my friends and myself as a group we have over a dozen of these things and had one flyaway... Parrot warrantied that and sent a new unit... but that WiFi thing doesn't happen... they always just stop and hover and wait for you

Samsung galaxy gear + Note II

Everyone knows I love my Note II, quad core with dedicated GPU on a 5.5 inch 720p screen. But when the galaxy gear smart watch came out it wasn't (and still isn't officially) compatible with anything but the Note III. I decided to see if I could get it to work.
After some digging I found the .apk for the galaxy gear watch manager for the note III and low and behold it installs just fine on my Note 2:

It's not totally 100% compatible, some things I still have to work on, but it does sync contacts, take photos, show the time etc.
If you have a Samsung galaxy device and wish to get the gear, feel free to try the APK I found:
http://briananim.kicks-ass.net:9000/ftp/droidapps/gearmanager.apk
EDIT:
So I was able to update my adb sideload program I always used to use and install standard .apk files after enabling usb debug:
http://briananim.kicks-ass.net:9000/ftp/droidapps/sideload_apps.zip
Here's some video of me tooling around in minecraft PE:
I didn't keep minecraft on the watch but I wanted to see if the watch could handle it.
Thus far I've installed a small calculator, and an uninstalling application to remove things I don't want to keep. I've also tried other launchers like Nova. Nova worked fine except you can't load widgets and there is no clock on the top right so the device is useless as a watch. I'll be sticking with the standard touchwiz launcher as it has a working app drawer.
I've taken the standard launcher and taken all the home screens out except for time, app drawer, and notifications so it's much more stream lined and I can get to all my apps with just one swipe. The question is, what apps do you think would be good additions to my wrist aside from calc, schedule, phone, and time? .apk links would be great too.
You can't use any apps the require a data connection as the device doesn't have wifi. I tried using pdanet tablet edition & foxfi between this and my phone via Bluetooth but it force closes unfortunately.
Can you get notifications, and which?
Still trying to figre that out. When I go into the gear manager on the phone and click "samsung apps" the manager freezes and I have to force close it.
What I can do right now is make calls, take photos / video, see my call log, tell the time. I can also see upcomming events.
I need to find a copy of the note III's s-voice to be more compatible. Anyone have an .apk? I'm not sure if it's the exact same as the s4's

I've done a lot of reading on the gear. It's not worth it at the moment, especially since the CEO himself said the gear is lacking a little "something extra." Also, due to this, they have already started working on the gear 2. Mainly, Samsung knows they screwed up big time and Apple and Google will most likely produce something better. Your meta watch and my pebble are still better at the moment. The problem is battery life is terrible. All notifications from apps other than stock email and messaging show nothing but a notification icon with a number. You have to open up even gmail on your phone because it will not display on the gear. The metawatch and pebble showed all this from day 1 and even improved with each update. Every big tech review site has given the same statement. It looks great but fails everywhere else. Maybe if it was $100, it would be a decent accessory to have until something better comes out. However, $300 is a complete waste for a subpar overly hyped product. I wanted this device, but glad I read all the reviews. Samsung is retarded also for making it only compatible with the note 3 on release. A very stupid and limited form of marketing that will only hinder their progress. Anyway, if anyone bought it, good for you. Trust me it's better to wait as mentioned in many reviews of this device. Then again, it's smart marketing in one way because people will buy it for the cool factor, and then they will upgrade to the gear 2 because it's better. Same concept on cars. Mercedes has this trick with the E class. They've already got a 6-10 year outline of the horsepower and design of each future car. That's why it's the most changed and most bought Mercedes. Think about it before you fall for the gear.

Agreed...and there are many top tech websites and comments by people like us on xda that agree with you, lol.
T-Mobile already sells it at 25% discount, but I think you have to buy it with N3. Yeah, unfortunately Samsung rushed into this one. It has potential since its based on modified Android 4.2 OS (or whatever 4.x), which means it will get hacked and modified at some point. But the price point of $300 is too high to make it mainstream now. Remember what happened to original Sony SW? Nobody cared about it until they dropped the price to $99 and opened SDK. Boom! It became affordable and open for XDA community to jump in with new app development and support. But with Gear, no matter rootable or not, you still will be limited by poor battery life, proprietary charging cradle (imagine forgetting it to take with you before even a 2 day trip?), and bracelet which is not replaceable and kind of flimsy looking with that camera sticking out asking to be bumped.
About a month ago if someone would have asked me what smart watch to buy at the current moment, I would suggest Pebble only (because of it being mainstream with developers support). Today, this answer would be Sony SW2 because of all the improvements (watersplash resistant, easily accessible standard micro-usb, great touch display where watch face can stay on permanently and you still get a decent multi-day battery life). My personal fav right now is Omate. Don't care about stand-alone phone (will never use it), but the whole idea of portable android device fully waterproof with a camera, micro-sd, and 600 mAh battery, and already released SDK ahead of official availability (and XDA developers already working on it now) - that intrigues me a lot!
Yes the Omate is certainly the most interesting at the moment with full Android 4.2. My only gripe with it is how thick it is. I really don't see me wearing a watch that size at the moment. Maybe in a few years I'll be saying it's too small but right now the SW2 is the largest I'll go.
The SW2 is sleek and does what I need which is be a companion to my phone, allowing me to leave my phone in my pocket a bit more especially with where I'm living at the moment :/. If Google (or anyone else) doesn't beat it by December, the SW2 will be my next gift to myself.
I've enjoyed the watch so far, even it being in my possession for less than 12 hours I'm still having fun with it. I very rarely make expensive purchases on a whim and although I did read a ton of reviews I wanted this watch more for my own curiosity more than anything.
My friends helped kickstart the pebble and if I would have known about it I too would have been on that bandwagon. So far the picture quality has been great, I've yet to take any videos however I can tell you that you can transfer the files from the watch to the phone seamlesly. I belive it does it for you after awhile or you can push them. I took some shots of my parent's dog I was watching today and the photos looks pretty good, especially on this small screen.
I like the fact that I can use multi-touch things like pinch-zoom etc. The audio controls are nice and when 4.3 comes out for the note II there will be even more things I should be able to do with this device. Samsung did say that the marketplace for this device will be open for app devs to make things for it specifically, and it can have a dozen or so apps installed at once.
Great feedback from everyone. I agree that the Sony Smart Watch 2 seems to be the best new option currently. It delivers on battery life, is splash resistant, can open and read notifications, esp with the notification pull down, and has the ability to see multiple apps on each screen similar to android phones and the Omate interface. It's definitely an improvement for the current smartwatch genre. It's actually also thinner than the Gear despite being boxier. I do like the Omate and the Neptune Pine, but they seem way too bulky and geared towards being stand alone devices despite Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity for use with smartphones. I just hope Google does one better.
The gear is the worst deal lol. A waste of $300

Hit my "THANKS" button! Come on, you can do it!
I'm going to try loading side-loading apps using the usb debug:

Thanks premiatul however I tried that version of s-voice and it is only the BETA (as listed in it's info page) so it won't sync. It looks like I need one taken directly from the note 3 via root or something.

Can you try to side load gmail and see if you get emails? I saw that video and dolphin browser won't work due to requiring data connection. I assume gmail would also need data. Thanks!

So I was able to update my adb sideload program I always used to use and install standard .apk files:

Thanks for the update bro. This thread right here is a big turn off about the Gear. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2477441
I run with my pebble and sweat a lot. Pebble is totally waterproof even in the shower. That's really pathetic on Samsung's part. They clearly didn't do enough testing.
