Should I buy galaxy s? And y did u buy it? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I wana buy this phone but ppl say it has gps problems and laggy but what exactly is wrong with gps? And is the phone fast? Does captivate has these problems ? Do u need app to SD for this phone or everything goes on internal memory ? Please help me pick and y did u guys bought galaxy s for ? Please share

Bought it over the Desire on reviews, looks and GPU.
After seeing how laggy the Desire is first hand and how horrible it looks, I don't regret my choice one bit. The Galaxy S is an incredible phone.

Used to have an HTC Magic (heavily modified) and I needed something else since ROGERS wasn't being good to me and HTC was trying to lock out the SPL. I switched to Bell because of their deals and got the Galaxy S because of it's interface, open recovery, style, and feel.
GPS: It's perfectly fine for me, never had a problem and it tracks perfectly. People seem to have problems but I don't see them with mine.
Laggy: Feels perfectly smooth, I came from an HTC Magic and going to a Galaxy S is night and day; it feels great for me. Some people are just hopping onto the band wagon saying it's laggy and forcing themselves to believe that, others though legitimately have lag, although I am not one.
SD: Everything goes into the internal memory; no A2SD yet until Froyo (official) comes out everywhere then it might have it, but as of now, no A2SD.

Usually people posts on forums because of problems, or just because they want to play with their phone,
Well, if you observe the first page of xda, there are 100people viewing NOne forums, 120 HTC Desire, and...
500 or more on Galaxy S,
don`t know if this means problems or popularity, just a tip..

Try to remember that Galaxy S is on A LOT of providers meaning we have people of all kinds on the Galaxy S forum compared to NOne where you had to buy full price from Google themselves or Desire where it's only on one/few providers.

I got the Galaxy S for it's specs. I live in Canada so phones like the Evo and Droid X were out of range for me because of CDMA. Galaxy S, with it's nice screen, good processor, and GPU seemed like a natural choice for me for my first smartphone (especially since I play games and watch movies on my phone alot.
Although there are problems with the GPS, I've found it to be usable and secondary GPS programs like CoPilot seem to make the problem a little softer. In terms of some lag, there are multiple lag fixes that can be applied.
Only thing I don't like with the phone is the looks. Everyone who sees it thinks I have an Iphone
All in all a good phone with a lot of potential if you're willing to put the time into it (which was actually sort of fun for me) and don't mind the looks.

It depends what you want it for. The screen for me is by far the main selling point, but as an all round device I honestly couldn't recommend it to anyone. Sounds harsh, but I've just sold mine and got an n1, and the n1 runs rings round it I'm afraid.
The sgs simply has too many niggly bugs which waters down the ownership experience.

I bought my Galaxy S because it seemed like the best phone on the market, even with the issues you can read on the internet, including these forums.
It came with JM2 firmware and I have to say that it worked surprisingly well after reading all that stuff about lag: I barely experienced any lag at all and there weren't many bugs. The biggest complaints I had were about KIES and faults with Android in general. Of course, it would have been nice to have a phone with less crapware (Aldiko eBook? Layar?) installed on stock firmware.
In overall, JM2 was a pleasant version to be on - the biggest lag I experienced was when rebooting the phone (and that was annoying - it took minutes to get it functional)!
However, that didn't excuse Samsung's delays on Froyo. Now that it's here, I installed it right away - and I can't say that I was very pleased at first.
As my phone booted to the new version, everything was intact except my homescreen. I can deal with that - but after I played around more it seemed very laggy in general. The new zoomout feature in the app drawer ran at a maximum of 10 frames per second. The Market was missing.
This is obviously inexcusable for an update that is supposed to fix issues and is touted as "improving performance" in a Samsung press release. Especially the issue of Android Market just missing - how is the average customer going to figure out how to get it back?
I simply caved in and did a factory reset after backing up some stuff. I'm glad to say that this restored my phone to how it was on JM2 - very responsive in general. I used AppBrain to tap through tens of install dialogs to get all my apps back, and now it's just like before.
In overall I can recommend the phone, but Samsung can (and needs to) do better. On the hardware side, three things: the plastic back cover creaks too much (but I use a silicon case, so that's not an issue for me). A camera flash would be nice, and a dedicated button for it would make shooting pictures easier too.
The lag issue seems to be more of an problem with Samsung's marketing department than with their engineers - it wouldn't look good to ditch their own filesystem. But then again, in my personal experience I believe that complaints about it are greatly exaggerated.

I'm from canada, still running original rom (2.1 JH2)
got it for the quality of the pictures; Night mode is amazing, the pictures I've taken with it shows more than my own eyes!! I was sceptical at first because of the lack of flash light, but francly, a flash can only light a certain part... Night mode shows it all!!
also 3D processor is wayyyy more than anything else out there. you can do anything graphic on this baby! Videos are fluent, using gallery, taking pictures, gaming, etc!
Only down part I can see is the GPS (at first) is kind of all over the place. Not realy helpfull when you're using the device to keep track of run (workout and such), but after fidling with the settings, it's pretty descent!
bonus was the amazing Super Oled...this thing is bright and precise! Also, the device is pretty thin (the thinnest around?), since the display and the touch sensor are all integrated.
And you can see more "activity" in the SGS section for the main reason that they sold 5 millions of those babyes, surely you'll get more activity than most (not selling as much). And, on android, more users means more devloppers!

that is the feature i like the most about the phone

I do have 2 now.
The bad part of sgs is that there are phones that are bad.
They are like small computers and do sometimes not what they should.
The good part is that you get the best hardware any phone has.
I do own iphone to. But sgs bet them on all area accept for apps.
Sgs has a fantastic screen.
Its nice to handel.
If you like to tweak and take time to learn about the phone. You can't get any better phone.
If you read here you will se people has problem but there almost always a solution in them.
I would never trade my sgs away. It the best smartphone on the market.

For non techies, applying hacks are not an option.
If you don't mind hacking your phone, then its a good phone.

I bought it mainly due to it's specs. and I'm curious about the Android platform(never owned one). and after sitting through hours of unbiased comparisons on the top market phones then, and most importantly, Google's Froyo keynote ;p
that's a lot of ands.

For me the SGS is disappointing.
My main reason to buy this phone was the hardware.
It realy has great specs and outperforms any other phone.
But when it comes to daily use it's not as reliable.
I read that GPS wasn't that good but nevertheless decided to buy this phone.
I had hope that it can be fixed. But for me, the GPS is completely unreliable.
In car it takes ages till I get a lock. And during the drive it's most of the time ~10m behind me.
And when I am not constantly on the route that it suggests me, it losts the lock and need to find me again, which takes ages.
I can't use any function that relays on GPS.
The last days I have more problems than ever. Even standing on the street it doesn't get any lock.
Thinking to buy me a "slower" but more reliable smartphone, like the HTC Desire.

It has some goddamn software issues. ( lag, gps. )
But it's probably the only affordable device that has a WORKING multitouch controller, and it also has the most powerful GPU, and a CPU that matches the best. ( It's actually slightly better, but JIT isn't optimised for Hummingbird )
So it's some bloody good hardware that goes with some not to good software to make an alright phone.
With a fair bit of tinkering/rooting/etc the phone is easily the best at the moment.

Recent Galaxy S : good GPS or not ?

Okay, I know its a tricky subject, however I try the question.
This is because I have read dozens x dozens pages on this forum about this subject, and I cant' figure out :
If I buy now a Galaxy S (that should be recent), do I have a change to get a GPS that is fine ?
Thanks for the answers (and sorry if I start another battle : mine is working, not mine, ...).

I don't think anybody knows for sure and Samsung has recently been very quiet about GPS and GPS fixes. If GPS is a critical feature for you than I think it is fair to say you are better off buying another phone, maybe a Desire or Desire HD.
Most likely all Galaxy S will have crap GPS hardware.
No firmware can fix this.
An external GPS receiver will fix this for in-car use though.
The Desire HD has better specs regardless.
You must also remember the most vocal of those who supports the SGS GPS (DamianGTO) has some pretty crazy claims, but seems to get pretty defensive when asked to actually prove the quality of his GPS.
The GPS is merely average on this phone, but it could be far better, and even 4 year old Garmin fitness watches seem to produce more consistent results. The GPS sometimes looks accurate, and then goes skitzo suddenly. There are FAR safer phone choices available. My mum also recently got a Desire, and not sure about the GPS, but there are minor things which are more polished than the SGS's firmware
Mind boggling this GPS isn't it?
I HAVE NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER, bought the phone in July, GPS is very much perfect.
I'm using Navigon.
Satellite locks in under a minute.
PS: tested about 500km in a car, highways, normal roads.
I too don't see any problems with the GPS in the Galaxy S, think this story has blown way out of hand. GPS locks in 30 seconds and is for the most part fairly accurate when I use NDrive. Brutmod or whatever its called doesn't work for me at all and was very unreliable. However, both Co-Pilot, NDrive and Trapster work flawlessly.
My phone's battery shows 21. Sept and my GPS is flawed.
In my experience, the GPS works ok in open spaces. Driving on roads, highways, and outside the city the GPS performs OK.
The problem is when you try to use it into de city. Then it seems unable to keep lock on satellites while you're moving around streets sorrounded by buildings.
It also performs better some days than others for unknown reasons.
In my opinion. If GPS is important for you, buying any other phone will be a safer choice.
I'd advise one thing, ask if you can take it out for a "spin", walk / run / drive around for a while and record the track. You'll see if you have something descent.
Apparently, some are, some aren't. Mine isn't "acurate" by itself but it is flawless with trackerbooster (can be found in app).
Between the SGS and the Desire HD, the SGS has the better display and a waayyy better GPU. DHD has a better cam (as per specs, we should see pictures from both to be sure) and a camera flash (but SGS has night mode, wich is, in my opinion, way more wrorthy than a flash)
GPS is basically average.. its not without flaws.. far from it.. but it works ok in most cases. It's just not a super great GPS. I suppose the hardware is nice and could be made to work better (it might also be interferences due to the hardware placement/RFI/etc..) but that's not perfect yet and probably wont ever be
It's brilliant(!)

Andrew stop posting lies about me in every gps tread.
OP: i would say you can't get a better phone then sgs. But you can be unlucky and get a bad phone.
Its not only gps that can be broken, but this is how products works in mass production. There will always be products that's bad that slips through the checks. But there will also be products that's is much better then it should normal be.
Im lucky to have 2 of them.
But try the phone out when you buy it.
Try the gps and make sure you 3 button combo works.
If it look god buy it.
If it looks bad, ask to try an other phone. If they don't let you, just go to an other store.
I did have an iphone 4 to, but i did sell that. Still got the iphone 3gs left.
So i can compare with them to.
The sgs is better in all area accept apps, mostly games.
But the sgs need some care to make it very good.
Mostly its a lag issue on some of them. But that easy to fix.
But a have never regret that i buy it in the first place. Also my girlfriend did buy one after she used mine.

Come on. Let's be serious about this matter.
The day you see as many people complaining about broken screens, broken batteries, broken 3G reception, or any other phone part, as you see complaining about a flawed GPS behavior, THEN you could assume that we are facing an ordinary problem, as ordinary as a faulty screen, or any other part of the hardware. But this is not the case.
I don't see loads of people claiming about every other part of the phone being broken, as I see complaining about the GPS. And more important, I don't see loads of people with other hardware problems complaining about they having exchanged the phone for a new one, or having sent it to repair, and having got back another phone with the same problem again and again. That only happens when we're talking about the GPS problem, so we can say with no doubt whatsoever that this GPS thing is way bigger than "normal mass production fault rate".
So, buying a Galaxy S with faulty GPS is not just a matter of being unlucky. Thanks to people like you who wrongly drove me to believe that the GPS problem wasn't such a big thing now I own a Galaxy S with a mostly useless GPS.

Excellent post. The GPS is certainly Galaxy's Achilles foot and anybody buying a SGS should realize that there is a significant chance that GPS on their device will not work properly. How big (or small) that chance is is a matter of debate, but it is certainly much larger than being just a random production fault that is normal with any mass produced product.
Come on guys, lets not argue pointless-ly again about GPS issue.
Some have issue, some don't so, The answert has been stated: Test it before buying it.
Test for Time having a fix
Test it for accuracy (for at least 15 min.)
Then you'll see if it works fine or not.
Bought Mine in July (Vodafone Ireland 16GB). Never had problems with GPS.
Looks like the first batches was the best
Open sky in the car:
Fast fix < 10secs
Sat Fix > 8 sats (16 in view)
accuracy: very good < 10m
navigation: No issues until now > 800Kms use

The three button combo is the way to get the phone into "download" mode so that you can flash new ROMs on it. To test it, shut down the phone, and then power up the phone while holding down volume down, home and power keys. You should see a "yellow man" and a "Downloading" text - if that appears, the phone can enter the download mode.
The GPS can only properly be tested by actually driving (or running) somewhere and seeing if Google Navigation is able to keep GPS lock and track your movement correctly. Just testing in shop whether the phone can get GPS lock is not enough.
Just try to get a fix inside the shop, phones good GPSes can (like the HTC Desire), Those with bad can't. (like mine, 3 weeks old)
Got mine in october, battery is 1.9.2010 dated, and I drive with GPS without any issue using Navigon and stock JM7
I'd say: buy from a shop with a 100% satisfied or money back logo. Then test GPS, if it's bad, return the phone. I personally think newer batches should be the most trouble free. However, there are surely still many old batches around even if you buy it today, you could get one of them...
I'm happy with SGS, won't get the desire (screen too ugly compared) and the HD is too big for my taste. But I got a good batch phone

Unfortunately, it isn't really that easy, unless you know someone who owns one
It isn't something you can test accurately in store. Either way, my advice is still that it's better to be safe than sorry. Even if the issue is hardware related, there is no way of knowing if the unit you buy works, the software on the Desire was heaps better for me (and so the Desire HD is probably even better).

[Q] How Do You Like This Tab?

Hello, I'm thinking of getting the 7" Galaxy Tab (wifi only) and wanted to see what everyone thought about it. What are the pros/cons, and is this the best tablet out there for the money?
We currently have a rooted Nook, so I imagine it will be close to that (but better) - but that is my wife's. I wanted something for myself, something with great hardware performance, but also easier to carry around than an iPad2.
What do you guys think?
Galaxy Tab will be your choice for mobility and performance. After you root it and load with custom Rom , you will fall in love with it. My son loves it
I think that it's a good idea, but keep in mind that the Nook Color is really customizable and is offered at a low price. What you do get with the Tab is better performance, better screen, and... Well, just about better everything, except the price tag and the battery life.
However, consider getting the 3G version as well if you really plan to use the internet anywhere. It's fun!

Galaxy tab is the best . but why u wont wait for tab10.1 and don't tell me is big ..
yeah is big . but OMG
i would say that the gtab is the best device i have ever bought. i have no regrets purchasing it for the full price. no other tablet (thats out now) can compete with this 7" beauty. its the best 7" tablet on the market right now, hands down! screw the nook color. i use this thing every single day. its my main device, i carry only this device, no cell phone. battery life is great for its size. but after 6 months of using it, i feel like i need to upgrade it. i know this seems like a total 180, but i want a dual core version with honeycomb (and some more RAM) but with the exact same size. everything else is great! the only reason im saying this is because i consider myself a heavy power user (the elite of the elite) and i feel like sometimes it just doesnt keep up. but if ur not like me then this will feel like its blazin fast for you. since i know that i wont get what i want, i still recommend this to people considering a nook color something else.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1038171
Have a look at this thread, it seems the wifi tab can only play divx at 720p and not h264 720p like the 3g can. If video playback is a major reason for buying the tab then stick to the 3g version!

The Tab is by far the best phone/tablet hybrid out there right now. The important factors to me are:
* size (pocketable)
* screen resolution
* build quality
* GPU acceleration for HD video
I took it with me last week while travelling around Krakow, Poland. Picked up a Polish Internet SIM for £10 or so. It was like having a personal guide at all times. Google Places, Tripadvisor app, email, websites. All there at the touch of a button, and all pocketable. An iPad would be useless for such a trip.
I think it's best to think of the Galaxy Tab as a sort of phone/tablet hybrid rather than just a tablet. Honeycomb will not be targeted at this device as physically it's as much a phone as a tablet. This is a good thing as Honeycomb tablets are too big to carry around town and are lacking in telephony. The OS update after Honeycomb will bring that OS's functionality for smaller devices, but for now it can seem an oddity as it needs a phone OS (Froyo, Gingerbread etc) to be fully functional.
As it stand though, there's nothing that can match it .
I originally bought the Viewsonic G-Tab because it had the Tegra 2 processor and Xoom like hardware. Even though the screen was 10.1" it was terrible to see from almost all angles.
I decided to exchange it for the wifi only Tab and I have not been disappointed. It looks great and I actually think I prefer the smaller screen than I did the 10.1 tablet. I find the weight is more evenly distributed in your hands and that I can more easily type since my hands can span the screen. It doesn't sound like a big deal but unlike my phone I find myself using this thing for hours at a time and holding the larger heavier tablet wears on you after a while.
The battery life is decent even with heavy use. The device feels sturdy and well put together. I think the touch is responsive and the glare on the glass is not any worse then the other tablets out there.
I know I have heard how the wifi version is not as good as the 3G version. Honestly, I have a Vibrant that I can tether off of and I don't need the 3G and added monthly costs. I am almost always around an access point anyway. It runs fast and downloads better than my phone. I would like to have custom roms to put on it but I rooted it and added VT-Launcher and it looks like a different tablet.
Finally, I looked at Honeycomb and those tablets. I really don't see the big deal. The 2.2.1 FroYo does everything that you would want from a tablet with the right apps. I can do everything I need to and then some. Honeycomb isn't going to add any capabilities that I don't already have. My only complaints with the Tab is that it doesn't charge with the USB from a PC (at least very fast) and that the VPN isn't working for me with PPTP right now. I have a call into Samsung and I hope to get that resolved soon. Otherwise, this is a great buy.

i'm still having doubts with my Tab (wifi version) since i'm unable to "use" its full potential. i didn't bother though getting the 3g version since i have a small phone at hand.
i'm a little unsatisfied but it's all good. i primarily use it for viewing and editing documents, surfing the net and some music and audio. that's pretty much it. if there's someone who'd be able to do a custom rom for the wifi version, then i'd be recommending this Tab.
I have both a Nook and a Sprint G-tab. If I wouldnt have gotten the deal I did on the G-Tab (company paid for it) I would return it. not that it is a bad unit, I am pretty pleased with it. My Nook has CM7 loaded on it and comparing the two comes out pretty much a wash. They are both great devices. I use the crap out of a tablet and both do everything that I want them to do.
Just my $.02 on the subject.

Why I want my Nexus money back!

Problems:
extruding screen with the odd noise when you touch it
flashing graphics and lines flicker across screen
sometimes unresponsive when clicking icons
can't detect ad hoc networks (meaning lack of connection to internet phones, esp. Nokia, Symbian)
this coupled with no 3G connection (i.e. sim), gives connection on the move an added complication
drops internet connections too often for comfort
white graphics on the screen, look yellow
some bad lighting around edges of screen
apps in app store might not be for this device (more of an issue for basic users, but still frustrating),
app store lacks a Nexus 7 only feature.
cant turn it on and get started, without internet connection (that was annoying)
a camera, but you cant take pictures with it, need to get an app first (not user friendly for non techi people)
no music store
8 gb space but really its 5.8gb (they should stop selling things like that. 8gb space should mean that you get what it says in 'space').
slight strange issue; purple metal edging (why purple tint?)
poor quality speaker
should have called it something other than Nexus, hard to search internet for things specific to this device.
things i now miss and should have realised I would have, before I bought it:
- no rear camera, makes photo taking stupidly difficult.
- no memory card slot
- things are geared toward the cloud, but with all the internet issues it often means you can't connect to files on the go.
Rival to iPad? No way, why I didn't dig deeper into my pocket, I don't know.
Rival to Kindle Fire? only in power but bad quality control by google has let it down, it's a no from me.
Will I be sending it back? Yes.
Do you also feel as let down as I do? Answers below:

You got a bad unit. Happens to iPads too. For what it's worth a good unit works fantastic.
As for the bottom half of your list.... you are really complaining about no memory slot and rear camera? And that there isn't really 8GB of space? EVERY device does that. There is a music store, it's called Google Music, but feel free to use Amazon MP3 as well. You seem to have let yourself down.....
Mine is perfect and everything I thought it would be, sorry for your problems.
It sounds to me like you wanted an iPad and tried to buy the nexus to save some money.
Go ahead and get an iPad, Android is more for people who like to tinker and modify and have choices. Apple works out really well for people who want a system laid out for them that's real simple and dummy and non techie friendly. I buy them for my parents for that reason. I also have an iPad and an iPhone 4S so when I tell you that you and Android arent a match I'm not meaning any harm.
Make sure you get the 3G model iPad because they are much more picky about WiFi tether than Android.
However keep in mind that many of the negatives you don't like about Android are identical with the iPad.
And android has the play store which is a music store so I'm confused on that one and some of the other complaints, I think a lot of it was just not taking the time to learn your way around.
I'm very happy with my nexus its exceeded my expectations by far. Its in perfect condition physically and Im running an amazing custom ROM and kernel.

I was the proud owner of a Nexus 4 for about... 4 hours

I was a bit confused as to whether I should create this thread under troubleshooting, or general, but decided on general since I'm not really looking to troubleshoot my device anymore; just looking to get thoughts and opinions.
After Google failing to put my order through for a long, frustrating week, I finally managed to place a successful order through. A pleasant surprise was when the phone shipped in one day instead of the 1-2 weeks the google store claimed.
So when I got the phone, I immediately did some basic testing (speakers, calls, internet, wifi, bluetooth, camera, etc), and when I was satisfied enough, updated it to 4.2.2 and unlocked the bootloader, flashed a custom recovery and rooted it. Then I got around to really using it.
When I was copying my music over (and I'm a music fanatic), I used up 10gb of the 12gb available. Why on earth would Google give us such low storage and omit an external slot? I knew about this before I bought the phone, but I think it really hit home when I copied my data over. I've read that it's because they want to push their cloud, but without truly unlimited network internet, that point is moot. Not to mention the fact that it's not capable of more than H+, so that's another point that counters constant cloud usage.
So I thought what the hell, slow internet (getting ~1mbps vs ~12mbps on my previous T989), low storage, I'll live with it. I'll change my habits and live with it, maybe swap music out according to my daily mood, and try to be on wifi most of the time.
And then the really big bad thing happened. When i was talking to a friend via bluetooth, I was fiddling with my phone trying to google something, and the internet wasn't working. I toggled wifi off and it was working on 3G/H+. So I reconnected WiFi and Bluetooth disconnected. After replicating a few times, I realized that if you're on wifi and in an active call, internet via wifi won't work at all. This killed the conversations I was having on FB, Google Talk and Whatsapp.
Had I not already been frustrated with the phone's storage and internet, I might have worked harder on trying to find a solution, but I'd had enough. I called a friend and handed the phone over to him, and he'll hand over his used but mint-condition S3 this evening when he's had a chance to copy his data over. The S3's a decent phone, and it's solving all three of my current major issues.
Since the speed and storage are clearly marked, I'm just going to say I was stupid in not really realizing these things before I went "ooh, shiny!!", but that wifi/bluetooth bug seems to have been a persistent problem for a while now, a well-reported bug.
Anyway, I just had to rant a bit. What are your short or long-lived experiences with this device?
The only reason I would trade it for an s3 is to sell the s3 on ebay and then buy another nexus 4 with some money left over.
Sorry you didn't like it. Hope you have a better experience with your new phone!
Ive owned every nexus phone and this one by far is my favorite. Absolutely love it an havnt had a single issue with it. I do agree that i wish they gave the phone more storage but ill never use up 16 gb anyway
I had a note 2 and like it a lot, I had a gs3 before that, but I lie stock Android look and and cm10 always end up having some sort of bug, storage wise I'm not too happy but j realize I don't listen to all my 10gb of music so I keep only 2-3gb, I do play games but at the same time I don't play all, I try to maintain all the apps I actually use, the gs3 and note 2 does take better pictures tho, but the gs3 doesn't feel as snappy as the note 2 and the note 2 screen is great for content but too bug for work sometimes, so far I'm happy with the nexus 4
Btw I'm guessing you still want the phone since you posted here

The N4 isn't for non-tech enthusiasts. The vast majority of N4 owners derive great pleasure in modding their phones, improving and troubleshooting issues. That's why it's not considered or even marketed as a phone for the mass of consumers.
With that being said, the S3 is a much simpler phone, though I hate the hardware too much to say anything nice about it.

The slow internet could just be because I don't get good Tmobile coverage everywhere, but the T989 still gave me ~12+ in the areas the N4 gives me ~.8-1.2mbps. I've found a possible workaround here on xda for the biggest issue I have (the bluetooth/wifi issue), it has to do with buggy Qualcomm drivers. I'll test it out. As for constant music streaming, it would kill my 2gb 4G limit in a week, after which they'll push me down to edge for the remainder of the month.
And yes, the S3s pricier, I'd never consider it if I wasn't getting it in an even trade.
Thanks for the replies and feedback guys, you're making me want to go get it back from my friend. It is no doubt a great phone. Now going back to work, my boss won't be too pleased!

16GB is enough more than enough for me. 2GB of music, 85-100 apps 1.6GB. I don't let pictures/video linger on local storage. Use space more efficiently.
10GB solely music is over 1,200 tracks, Jesus.

Staying STOCK but still having it all

Hi everyone. I have been a long term reader of XDA, and finally I think I have something to contribute.
I have been a long term modder, constantly flashing new ROMS on my phone. I think I went through about 20 ROMs on my last phone the HTC One S.
But now I am hoping to stay pretty much stock as much as possible. Like a lot of you I can't wait to give Xposed framework a crack, but till then what apps get you through the day, without deciding to whack on TWRP and begin flashing?
For me here is several apps that just takes my stock N5 to the next level without needing to mod. Though some of them work best with root.
DynamicNotification Play store link
Jealous of Moto X users with their funky Active Notifications? this app is the next best thing. Take the time to tweak the settings and you might find this ticks the box. Active Notfiy is ano alternative. But I have not tested it.
Gravity Screen On/Off Play store link
This app is amazing. If you have you phone flat on the desk at work, just pick it up and it swtiches on. Imagine if your phone is trickle charging on a Qi charger, you pick it up and use it then put it down and it times out. I have the 'false turn-on protection in hand & car' checked and this means I have the best of both worlds. I can hit power and switch the screen off till I hit the power again. or not use the power button and allow gravity on off to take care of things. Awesome app.
Dashclock play store link
Probably the best app to come to take advantage of the lockcreen widgets in 4.2. Widgets on 4.4 is not enabled by default, but can be added in settings > security > Enable widgets. The good thing about the widgets on the lockscreen in 4.4 is they got it right. No stupid 'hints' every time you switch on the screen and you can easily remove the default clock on the lockscreen, and add Dashclock as your default lockscreen widget. Awesome.
START!? Play store link
Last but not least. When sticking with the GEL launcher I have found it harder to get to an app I want. It is great to be able to use the persistent Google search bar (Google now) to search using the first few letters of an app to pull it up quickly and launch it. But sometimes I dont remember the name of an app, I just know what I want. So Categories are good. I think the Aviate launcher show a lot of us that. Start!? gives you a neat overlay menu a bit like Action Launcher in which you can have any number of manually managed groups/folders of apps. I paired it with a gesture using GMD gestures so I can launch and use START!? anywhere anytime on my phone. Great app.
Stay stock everyone. Hang in there. Any other suggestions of apps that can help staying stock but still having it all, post below. cheers.

ES File Explorer Play store link - bblzd recommended this also here
The first two apps (DynamicNotification & Gravity Screen) are both battery killers on an already average battery life. I'm still debating on going back to a Moto X, traded the first one off to get a N5... and some what regretting it. Here's the way I look at it if you have more then one app installed to mimic a native operation on another phone, then get the other phone. But I absolutely love not having to hit the power button on a phone to wake it up.

I have the dynamic notification app and it doesn't take as much battery for me, maybe 10% or so. 2hr screen time and 15h 27m on battery. I check twitter and use hangouts/fb messenger alot and I was listening to music for about 3-4 hours straight.
+1 for Dash Clock.
Problem is, you came from a one s. That phone was garbage and no matter what ROM you flashed, the phone was still garbage. I had it and am not biased towards the nexus line in any way. Its a good thing you now own a nexus. The ROM scene is much larger as well as the nexus kernel scene, plus this thing is far from garbage. As far as staying stock, that's your choice, but, I can guarantee you that you will find a ROM dev if you decide to flash and most likely stick with that dev and his/her ROM series. Main reason, the nexus 5 is not garbage nor was the nexus 4. I'm not going to go into battery life, or any other spec/aspect of the nexus 5, but trust me its the best nexus device to date, and the ROMs will only improve upon that statement.

i used to do that kind of thing with tasker. but it's a pain to set it up.. on samsung phones the speaker is on the back, so i had a tasker program to switch to speakerphone if i laid the phone face down during a call. and used the camera flash led as a really obnoxiously bright notification light.

I definitely wanted a Moto X until the N5 came around, as a result I do want to emulate a couple features as I can from the Moto X.
DynamicNotifications is kinda buggy for me but GravityScreen works really well. What I need next is full speech navigation for the N5.

I also had a HTC One S, S4 version, and I disagree with you totally. For me, it performed even better than HTC One X which was suposed to be flagship. The colors were awesome, only thing I don't miss is the Pentile matrix where you can see pixels even in fullHD devices as SGS4. Camera was totally awesome, when I moved to SGS3 I missed it, but even more when I moved to N4 which has crappy camera. N5 camera has way to go in order to match your "garbage" camera. Build construction was awesome, I had not any kind of scratches but I know people had. For a device released nearly 2 years ago, HOS was for me best mobile you could buy.
I'm very happy with my n5 (in HOS I tried to get AOSP and, even being good, was not that good), but anyway still think of my HOS (now my mom has it) as a very durable and capable phone.

You're just used to amoled. I understand. I was once too. Give it a little time and maybe you'll "see the light" and the way a smartphone screen should look.
If you look at the quality reviews around the internet on the N5, its screen is flat out awesome.
Although it's up to you in the end. If it doesn't look good to your eyes and you're unhappy with it you could always return it.
Great thread. Thanks. Didn't know about Dynamic Notifications. Using them now, hopefully it doest kill the battery. I have been getting great battery so far on my N5.
One S
Have to put in a good word for the One S. Mine was rooted with AOKP 4.1.1 ROM and did everything I wanted--except for LTE. So I got an N5. sure the N5 is faster but the One S was a more convenient size and seemed more robustly bult. And KitKat on the N5 has a lot of--let's admit it--Google bloatware that has to be stripped off. Google is actually becoming more like Apple (do it my way!) and the carriers (Take this crapware or else!)

If you look at the quality reviews around the internet on the N5, its screen is flat out awesome.
Although it's up to you in the end. If it doesn't look good to your eyes and you're unhappy with it you could always return it.

Well, I like dark backgrounds. And it just looks cheap on the N5. Reminds me of an old rear projection TV where blacks weren't really blacks.
This is my set up, and believe me, it looked a lot better on my HOS. But I suppose I digress.

Totally understand. Looks nice
Does DynamicNotifications conflict with Screen Gravity? Seems like they have some overlapping features.

So the one s screen looked better? :sly: whatever you say. And the one s was crap, With crap Sense bloat, crap reception, constant loss of cell service, dropped calls, non existent data service. Amoled is crap, and provides nothing but over exaggerated color. I had the one s, in fact 2 to be exact, and they both had the exact same issues. The one s was a low to mid end phone. Never mind htc's mind numbing s on annoyance, and HTC dev unlock. :banghead: the last HTC device I will ever buy.
