Meaning the ergonomics, if you will, of having to reach to the top of the device for so many system and app functions.
The design makes no sense to me.
If most of us hold devices with our thumbs at the bottom of the device,why aren't most all features functions and controls positioned at the bottom?
Compared to my Galaxy Note...this is a relative pain to use.
It's a 7" tablet not a phone...what do you expect?

The problem is we DON'T have a tablet JB UI. What we have stock, is a PHONE JB UI, the (almost) same one as Galaxy Nexus. People have been rooting to change (lower) the LCD density, which forces the N7 to give us the table UI. See this
This is stupid on Google's end. They should have given us the tablet UI out of the box. We want a TABLET! Not a 7" phone that doesn't make phone calls!

Only the launcher is in this phone-type mode. The apps remain the same as their tablet counterparts.

Tablets are typically meant to be held with one hand, and operated with the other. I'm not quite sure what you mean entirely, but you are not supposed to operate a tablet device using solely your thumbs.

On a 7 inch "tablet", use of portrait mode is much more common. As such, the presentation of the phone UI probably made more sense for Google, as opposed to the tablet UI.
Regardless, devs are hard at work to let you use the tablet UI without changing the DPI.
The launcher isn't exactly the phone style, either. The Android people are calling it the hybrid UI. Basically, you can't just use the same UI you would use on a 10" tablet in a 7" tablet.

It's not just the launcher. The notification area, and the layout of the Setting page, are different in the tablet mode.

I, for one, much much rather use the UI for a 10" than this hybrid UI for my N7.

I know, I should have specified this as well.
Though, it is just starting to annoy me that people keep calling the Nexus 7 a giant phone of sorts, when the apps you download from the market are the same exact tablet apps you will be getting on larger devices. As long as developers recognize 7" as a tablet device - you will not be getting the layout of a phone app on the Nexus 7. Calling it a giant phone is not a correct way to describe this, and is an obvious dramatization of this entire setup.

Indeed.
I personally love the "Hybrid" UI I feel like it works and looks great. Wouldent change anything other then adding Nova Launcher for Landscape when I need it on the homescreen

Same, although the stock launcher is much better IMHO then nova.
When nova merges all the jellybean changes I will switch back
The only thing that bugs me about the N7 is landscape is really wonky having the buttons in the center.
It would be awesome if you flipped to landscape it turned into the 10" ui

It was only excusable before the Hybrid UI's features were announced. I actually had the largest thread regarding the "phone" UI. Now that I have a Nexus 7, I'm all for Hybrid UI. It just feels right.

I use the keyboard a LOT....so end up using in portrait much more than landscape because it's much easier to use the keyboard from there. ALL of the Google apps and MANY other apps have their menu/settings icon is at the top right of the device.
If I'm lead designer?....everything is at the bottom.
I guess I'm banking on ParanoidAndroid porting over.... Allows a bit of app to app customization of this stuff

Ok this is a thread I hope that will catch on. So basically I own an iPod and iPad and now I own an android phone and I love android phones, but there are still tons of features from iOS which I love and hope would be/have been implemented on updates
I'm sure most of you own an apple device and I just want this to be a thread where you describe features you love (even the smallest thing) on your apple devices that ANDROID DOES NOT HAVE and lets hope an android official would read it and add the features to future updates
Now let me Start off to say android NEEDs to have a stock ebook reader app, not from other providers that comes pre installed I'm taking like google books but better. I'm a readaholic and the apple iBooks is fabulous, I love the feature where you can go from day to night contrast, I know there is an app in the market with similar feature but its not easy on the eyes and just not comparable. Next is the dictionary I love the feature so if I didn't understand a word I would just highlight it and click on define and it would have the meaning and once again I know there is such a in an app in the market but it requires internet connection which is dumb, what if I'm in the subway reading and don't have reception.
Another feature I have come to love is the reader feature where it removes all the ads and everything from the main page and just has the words. I love this feature when I read long Wikipedia articles and stuff and once again it has the define for words I don't know also the feature where you can save it for future reading is awesome.
Most of you probably by now think I'm a nerd as i read alot but i just love reading, its like tv in your head of course doesnt beat the real thbfing but its fun to read. ANYWAYS There are tons of feature in-between I would like on the android but for now I'll leave to you guys to contribute what feature you want from apple to android, even the smallest lamest feature you might think. Sometimes the feature we want is already there but just not good enough which I totally get but anyways lets start contributing people.

With Safari browser in IOS, you can tap the status bar to go back to the top of the web page, very useful with some long website.

I don't have an iphone but I do want to say that as an android user I really couldn't care less what the stock apps are. There is almost nothing on my note that I haven't replaced with something that I liked better.
If you haven't found an application you liked though, that's another issue.

Safari lacks auto fit paragraph to the width of the screen for pinch and zoom function.
This is one of the deal breakers for me when considering Android vs iphone. Others such as non-3rd party keyboard and small screen.

And Kindle isn't limited to just one platform--- it's available for your PC, Android, iOS devices, Blackberries... Not sure if Symbian is supported. Either way, Kindle is universal.

Hey, you're not the only one who loves reading here. I do, too. Other than this phone, I also have a Desire HD and a Sensation XE (DHD is my first Android) and I prefer my main phones with big screen real estate, mainly because I read e-books on them. I have to admit that I still like the traditional books--- nothing like the smell and the texture of a new book and feeling it on your hands but I've come to know the advantages of e-books over paper books, mainly portability. With e-books and your phone, you can read anywhere and anything you like from your app's shelf without breaking your shoulder bones from all the carrying around of thick, heavy hardcovers. And there are many times of the day when I have nothing to do which could be better spent reading--- like waiting in line or during commercials if I'm watching TV. Besides, e-book copies are usually cheaper than real books so if I like something, I can go off and purchase it electronically and then if I find myself liking it, that's when I purchase the real thing.

Wtf? This thread has nothing to do with who copied who or what came first. It has to do with features that ios has that android doesn't. Let's not turn it into a debate of who had what first or who is better.

Time for some intervention to get this thread back on its rails!
I think the one thing that iOS has that android needs is buttery smoothness. iOS has beautiful screen rotation animations, and hardly ever stutters when scrolling. Admittedly, the smooth scrolling has to do with how apple has true multi touch, while androids is emulated, but that has to do with how apple is a money grabbing pissfart corporation that thinks that they can patent everything and inhibit technological progression. But that is for a different thread.

I also enjoy how iOS applications tend to look nice and more professional. 90% of Android apps look like they were designed for use with Windows 97. Nasty fluorescent colors, jagged edges, all around child like. Apple has to approve their apps before publishing which is good because the end user profits in that situation.
One last thing android needs is a good keyboard. Apples keyboard has special key prediction techniques that predict what keys will be pressed next and then makes that key's sensor area larger so that it is easier to press it. Also, when you long press text in iOS, you get a magnifying glass that makes it easier to fine tune text selection. I've only ever seen this in devices running sense UI. This needs to be universal.
(About the screen auto rotate animations, ice cream sandwich does a good job implementing it, its just that it still isn't as smooth, and ICS isn't readily available to most android phones without having to root, and even then, a lot of things are broken in ICS roms.

If you can flash MIUI Rom on your phone then i would suggest it. Its as close to ios as android can get.

I can and I have. It is by far the best Rom out there, but this is beside the point. The point is to discuss what STOCK android needs, if I read the OP right. Plus MIUI doesn't offer the keyboard, animation, magnifying glass, or smoothness aforementioned.

The only thing I like about apple is that I don't own any of their devices. Heres a tip go on a pro apple site and make a thread about the benefits of android or WP7 over ios.

Completely agree, the same issue on my previous Nokia phone. When I download apps it just looks so bugle because some apps look professional, some look pixelated, somenjust blank at times. In apple they are proffesional weather they are free apps or paid apps, they are all slick
Another thing I hope is in ics is emoticons, not talking about the original android faces. I'm talking the emoji ones from apple, I love those and some of it are funny, putting an emoticon on a text message like have a good day or good night just cheers people up (I have noticed).

With the port made to the Acer Iconia A500 for Jelly Bean it looks like that tablet mode was able to be implemented so the notifications are able to be popped up in the bottom right rather than the top like phones, which would be awesome to see. So devs should have no problem with making it work for our tablet.

Oh. I thought it was still speculation still. I just posted it since it was posted on the portal today so I thought I'd share for everybody else.
Yea it's been confirmed that 7" devices will get the hybrid UI, while 10" tablets will keep the same tablet UI and phones will keep the phone UI. The reason being that google believes 7" tablets don't benefit as much from the tablet UI as they should in theory be used in portrait mode, so the hybrid was created.
Whenever I use my TouchPad, I try to use it in portrait. I don't know why, I just do.

Touchpad is wider so doesn't feel as squashed when browsing.

Yeah. The only problem is that when I want to watch 4:3 video I need to turn on the option to hide the combined bar.
I'm amazed that when in landscape the buttons don't stick to the right hand side like they do on the GNex, it's a terrible waste of real estate.
Do you guys have any ideas if a hack will be possible to achieve this? (Given it's the case with the GNex it can't be that hard I guess?)

Well you say that, I think I'm going to be DSR'ing the tablet due to it.
Eventually developers will make the Nav bar hideable and most likely moveable and smaller via dpi changes like on the Galaxy Nexus. You might want to give custom ROMs a chance to mature before returning the N7.

the majority of newer phones are launching with the 1280x720 resolution with hard keys, and as a result, app devs are designing apps for 1280x720 resolution. our resolution is 1280x800, so what google does is rotate the keys so it uses the bottom 80 rows of pixels, leaving the rendering area at 1280x720 for games and apps. this way, we still get games and apps at full resolution, whereas with devices that keep the soft keys in the same place, the resolution gets cut down to 1196x720, and then games get shrunk to either 1196x720 or 1196x672 with black bars.
i personally have no problem with it at the moment, but ive only had my device for a few hours of play time. ideally, i'd like it relocated to the top so i dont hit it when im playing games, but tis a minor gripe.

Android doesn't work like that. Games do not have a fixed aspect ratio.

Yep, one of many reasons why I wouldn't buy an iPad, I felt a custom mod would fix this and indeed it did
So both the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7 have dynamic capacitive buttons instead of actual physical buttons. I was actually under the impression that this black bar was a separate capacitive display from the main display. Now that I actually see a Nexus 7 in person, this black bar appears to be just a part of the screen.
So am I actually getting 1280 pixels?
If you have root, you can try GMD HideBar XDA.
And GMD GestureControl also supports Nexus7.
These are just root apps, not system mods.
So part of the 7" 1280x800 screen is being used by the controls... I guess except for videos and pictures.

Correct, apps can go full screen, like the default video player, but most don't which is very annoying playing games in landscape mode.
Just to follow up I've now enabled tablet UI (160 DPI) on the N7 and I think that deals with my issues with the softkeys, I will try a mod to anchor them to the right in landscape mod when a free one comes out.
We need a mod. A mod like the CM7 tablet settings, where you have the option to select "Softkeys Left, Right, etc". CM7 also options which softkeys you want, and in what order. Without changing dpi. That would be tits
I had the original Nexus 7, and loved it; however, only after I was able to root it and install a ROM that supported a "true tablet UI." The Phablet UI was nothing more than a bother to me, as apps that had a separate version for phones and tablets, I would always end up running the phone version. I would think with a 1080p resolution combined with a 7" screen a tablet UI would have no problems being ran. From what I can see, it looks as if the Phablet UI will be standard again.
How quickly do you think ROMs will come out and be able to run a true tablet UI? Also, are there any other tablets coming out soon that will be a competitor, with a 1080p screen, and running a true tablet UI? Maybe with external storage, as well?
Tablet Mode was phased out and no longer officially supported. We only have Tablet Mode thanks to the the wonderful Devs finding and activating the code.
SO... we probably won't have tablet mode out of the box, but custom roms like AOKP and others now know how to force tablet UI. So it would (should) just be a matter of time until those are ported.
There still are separate 10 inch layouts for the apps and even the systemui. The resolution doesn't determine which layout is used. The number of DP's is what determines it. This is calculated by the screen resolution and the LCD density setting. 4.1 had no effect on how third party apps gave their layouts. It just added a separate 7 inch layout.

Phablet UI is the most retarded GUI for a tablet.
I will not be upgrading to 4.3 until our fantastic devs have added true tablet ui back.

I use N7 in portrait mode most of the time, and find the phablet UI fantastic. Tablet mode confuses me, why would I want to use something quite different then my phone, just for the sake of being different, stock N7 looks great. Yes, some apps are run in phone mode, but if you bug developers enough, they'll add N7 into the code so it'll be run in tablet mode specifically.
Get over the idea of "phablet". That is the standard android UI

Um.... because you're already using something quite different from your phone? If you want to use your phone, use your phone. If you want to use a tablet, it shouldn't be forced to the same UI that is optimized for extremely small screens.

Pretty much this. The current UI is the "Android UI" now.
Hey all. I was wondering if the TF701 has the ability to change launcher to the one seen on the TF300 (notifications and time bottom right hand side)? I have seen images of the former on Asus' site with both launchers, but I cannot figure out how to get it to use the TF300 layout (which I prefer). Any help would be appreciated
PS: I have tried to attach some screenshots from the Asus website showing what I mean. This may be explainable but I am in no way a techie so bear with me

You mean the tablet interface with the pull up window at the bottom right.
Asus decided to use the phablet interface and I also don't like it.
On the TF700 on JB you can choose between the 2, but on the TF701 not.
Really would like that ASUS give us the choice on a next update too.

I agree, the centered buttons are awkward to get to when the tablet is on the dock and the notifications bar is just plain ugly.
What I don't get is why ASUS shows the tablet using both launchers when it can only use the one.
Anyway, thank you for helping me!
Unfortunately on jb4.3 Asus removed the old 4.1 launcher GUI. I'd say it's gone for good. The framework needs to be modeled to bring it back.
But really it's Google's fault as they only want one unified interface for phones, tablets and phablets.......

I honest to goodness cannot stand the new notification pull down. It's inconvenient and horribly ugly. I much prefer the interface on the 700. I keep hoping ASUS will wake up and realize how ugly and horrible it is and fix it. And I'm not sure the performance improvement of the 701 makes up for it, either. It makes me sad.

If you want, you can change it in settings back to stock android pulldown (on top left)...

Well, notifications are top-left, settings are top-right.
I personally like the asus-way of doing it (pull-down-middle) which has all of this unified more.
Nothing can beat the way it was done on the 700 though, have to agree on that.
Would also be interested in a way of bringing this back.
About a month ago I sent an inquiry to ASUS regarding this, they got back to me within 2 days telling me to email customer services. I did that, but have heard nothing since. I still use 4.2 on my tablet as I haven't upgraded it - is there any hope for me?
