I just got my Nexus 7 tablet today and installed an XO screen protector, by the book. It works fine for the longest time no issues. Then all of a sudden as the tablet was locked, I picked up and unlocked it and the screen was faded very badly. Like it was almost white as you can see with the 3 screenshots below that look faded. Then after about 10 minutes the colors come back.
I purchased from Sam's club with the warranty. Should I take it back for an exchange immediately? If I do this I lost the $20 XO Skin cover I now have installed on the device. Some may ask if the screen protector could be causing the fade. I guess it could be but why would it then come back later? Should I just power it down and wait for a day to see if its just an anomaly?
Both Good and Bad pictures attached below, should be fairly obvious which are good and which are bad.
Please HELP.
It's not your screen protector, I bought mine from the Google Play Store and has the same issue... Its very annoying :-S

Thanks for validating that its not the screen protector. I hope soon who knows these screens better than me can explain why its happening. I think I need to take it back and exchange.
Im trying to get a replacement from Google but lines are way too busy...
Contact XOSkins and see if you can exchange. They may honor the normal warranty exchange of you paying shipping both ways. You send the old one back, they send you a new one.

Really? On what basis do I ask for this? Do I just call and tell them my tablet went bad after I placed the skin on it?
Thanks a ton. BTW I don't know if you have the gray cover Google was selling with the N7 but it is AWESOME. Very sleek and snug to the device and feels solid for a cover. But no magnet
I'm having the same problem on my tablet. Really frustrating

Any luck?
I have been working on some other things and have now noticed that it takes about 5 minutes for the color to fully restore the color. When I first wake the tablet it is extremely cloudy and washed out to the point the colors are barely visible. Then slowly the colors return over about a 5 minute period.

Any luck on the replacement? I think I am going to take mine in tomorrow to Sams and see what they say. If they give me trouble I did purchase the warranty bout I am hoping that Sams will just replace it with a new one.

They do have a warranty for scratched or torn screen protectors. I don't know if they'll cover it if you applied the skin and had to get a warranty replacement for the device. I would Peel it off right before you send the nexus back and check with XO.
Also, someone else found that this may be caused by some special function of the tegra 3 that causes movies to have truer color, yet washes out the screen when done with the video. It might be a software issue.

I finally got in touch with Google last night (35min hold), they are sending me a replacement. You should get one too, that behavior is not normal...

Mine just started doing this today. Anyone sent theirs back for a replacement?
Sucks cuz I live in Japan.
Also, once the screen protector answer was given that, no, it's not your protector, why were there 10 answers about replacing the damn screen protectors?

Mine is on its way back for replacement.
Google didn't even question me about it or try do any troubleshooting. Just sent an RMA email and UPS label email to me.
Makes me believe that they know about this issue and just go ahead and send a new one out.

Guy guys it's not your tablet your wasting your time sending it back it's confirmed as a tegrachip problem there is a fix on this forum but you need root.Your find your replacements will be the same just have to try the fix or sit tight and wait for google to address the problem via ota update sometime soon.
I tried the "fix". Didn't work. Google didn't even try to get me to troubleshoot. I told them the issue with a pic attached and got the RMA instructions back. They know there's a problem and they are not trying to help anyone fix it.

I like the display but noticed a difference in color. I'm not sure if its because I'm comparing it to my one x. I want to try the "fix" but I'm holding off a little to see whether Google sends out an ota soon.

Got my RMA'd Nexus back today. Rooted already and tried a YouTube video. No problems at all. Yet.

Umm mine does this.. Noticeably after playing the included transformers video, the screen will be faded for around 10 seconds.
I'm inclined to think it's a Tegra 3 problem. I remember reading about 6 months ago that the upcoming Tegra 3 chip was meant to dynamically adjust the backlight while playing videos, for power saving.
It's probably just this backlight adjustment system glitching up and not knowing what to do after a movie is exited. Doesn't really explain why it's happening for sleep wakes though
Edit:
Managed to find the exact article I read, was longer than 6 months ago lol.
The technology is called DIDIM and Jen-Hsun described how it works. “It’s the ability to per pixel, per frame, per scene to modulate the backlight so quickly that we over a long period of time, reduce the amount of backlight intensity and backlight energy by nearly half. We save as much power in the backlight without changing the visual fidelity at all to save, essentially, the entire power used by our chip.” NVIDIA says your eyes see the same color temperature, so you can’t tell the difference.

Yeah im just being cautious because sometimes stuff like this gets worse.
Just got my Google Play order today, everything is fine, box, packaging, etc.
But I ran my fingers down the left side of the Nexus 7 and left a bump.
I tilt the Nexus 7 to get a better look and there's a dent
No bezel "glue/sticky noise" issue, just a dent
Guess I'll call Google tomorrow, we'll see how "if you buy from Play Store, you get support from Google and not Asus" works and how good it is.
Anyone know what phone number to call for Nexus 7 issues? Sorta having a hard time finding support.

I have to call tomorrow too. I was sent a Nexus 7 with a crack in the screen. I'm expecting google to tell me they will send a shipping label, and upon arrival of my defective Nexus 7, they will ship a new one out. I'm guessing this process will take 3 to 4 weeks.
But, I'm hoping they say "We will ship a new unit immediately. Upon arrival of the new unit, please return your defective Nexus 7."
Just got off the phone with Google Support, 1-855-83-NEXUS, was on hold for 55 minutes before I talked to someone.
The guy had to escalate my issue because it's a physical damage of the device, and I should get a reply back within 48hours, the guy only asked my email and that was it.
He seemed very rushed.

I have the same issue, but mine doesnt seem to be as bad as yours, mines not really visible unless you look at it from the back, it doesnt annoy me that much though seeing as its working perfectly. How did your complaint go through?
Does anyone know if the bezel is an seperate part from the glass? or are they together? I was wondering if you can just replace the bezel.

You can pop the back off, loosen the screw that is next to the spot where it's sticking out, push the bezel in towards the glass, hold it in place and tighten the screw.
My first unit had a bump like that, maybe not quite as bad.
The problem seemed to go away by itself after using it for a while.
I guess I must have straightened it out while holding it.
I still had to return the unit because it had the screen raise issue, though
So pretty much I ordered my nexus 7 right when it was announced, and due to a shipping error Google wanted another 8 weeks to get it to me from release so I canceled my order. Being the impatient idiot that I am I went and bought a new one off eBay. I am aware of the screen separation issue and it seems that it is affecting my unit on the left side of the screen. It annoys me a bit but I'll live. But my question is will the screen separation slowly get worse and spread? I haven't found a very clear answer.
I would say yes. Mine was 100% fine when I got it, 11 days ago and now has lift and creaking. Seems not as responsive. Sounds like bad first batch

I got 2 defective N7's....returned them. My plan is to wait until the 2nd "batch" with no defects. Maybe in few months, I will try again.
You should probably return and do what I (and many others), are doing. Wait.
My thinking was, I paid $275 for this, and its defective. Did I come looking for a perfect tablet? Yes. Not a defective one. Its really your call, but I can tell you the problem won't get any better.
Cheers
Mine was just noticeable on day one, within days the screen was visibly moving just by handling the tablet.
So there is every chance it will get worse so I would say get it replaced.
By the same token, there is every chance a replacement will have the same problem and just as much chance that you will get a perfect unit that develops a fault later on.
Suppose it's down to what yo are prepared to put up with.
Personally, if it turned out every unit in the world had a problem I would live with it and just try to find a fix but knowing that there ARE perfeclt good units out there makes it harder to live with.
I'm planning on getting a warranty from squaretrade for the tablet. Mine is fine but just in case something develops down the line I like to have peace of mind
Eh. $40 for a $200 device seems a little much.
kinda off topic but
my screen started something very strange today..
it has these little lines about 1/2 inch long running up and down it at random locations. It looks kinda like some type of render tearing. When you twist the tablet from side to side they kinda glow then go away. They look off shades of the colors being produced by those pixels.. I just noticed this thread and thought i would post here instead of starting another Thread.. Hope you do not mind.
Its so faint i cant get a picture of it at all. Sorry about this.. My question is has anyone ever seen anything like this.. It reminds me of the grid if code on matrix but its not that bad . its always at the same position until you power off then they are right back but different / random locations. They are not lined up in any way except it runs same directing. vertically
.
.
I'm sorry to say my second Nexus 7 despite initially looking good has now popped the left side of its glass and displayed a stuck green sub-pixel. I'm really disappointed as I think its a fantastic device apart from the poor QC. I may try and buy later if I see on this forum that ASUS have got there act together.
Good luck to all who are trying to get a decent unit.
Poor QC, overinflated expectations for a entry level device, or a newly registered shill poster.

Here is a thought... A crazy one I know but here you go....
Instead of constantly replacing a newly released device because of minor screen lift that does not effect normal use how about taking a chill pill, breathing in and out and relaxing?
Mine has screen lift and it still works great! Me? I will wait a few months and replace it once the flaw is fixed in manufacturing and there has been enough time to filter out all the flawed still in stock versions...
When I picked up my first one and it had screen lift, I was disappointed and angry. When I exchanged for a second one and it had screen lift and a non-functioning touch screen, I was just angry. When I picked up my third one with screen lift I just shrugged. Yesterday I picked up my fourth one with screen lift and a loudly popping speaker and I just laughed :silly:
There must be bad lots or something?
On my first unit I bought at staples and everyone I know local has no issues and no replacements. I have been and will keep looking for issues on them but so far so good.

Hopefully those people get filtered out of the gene pool and we can live in a peaceful future were defects are accepted as normal.

I'll bet that what actually happens is you'll send yours in, and you'll receive a refurb with EXACTLY the same problem. But you're so Zen-like about the whole thing, you'll just smile and go through the process over and over and never lose your cool. I envy your calm.
Of course, you'll have to hope the defect is obvious immediately, because every time you connect a new device to your Google account (and granted, one should put a hard limit on how many defects one accepts before considering the product to be junk) you'll use up a Google Music activation. And we can only deactivate 10 devices in a year. A big deal? Maybe, if you go through freaking defective products like this trying to get one that works decently.
Oh, and that will be another device that shows up in your list in Google Play that you can't delete. You'll remove it from the menu, but it'll be sitting there, taunting you.
Oh, and maybe you open an ebook on the defective that's limited to 3 devices, and then you can't open the book on your new one. And maybe the "remove from device" option isn't there, so you have to go through Google to get things fixed. But hey, relax, right?
If you're happy to sit on a defective device for months with the hope that it'll be better fixed later, knock yourself out. For some of us, the Nexus 7 is a special device, being the only Nexus tablet, and we just want one without defects. This whole preachy routine really does get a bit old.

Here is a rational thought.
How about a device should not have a so called minor screen lift issue. That moves around when you touch you the screen. That when you pick up the device and hold it the damn thing feels like it is falling apart and about to simply break.
Only a fool would accept that and keep the device. It doesn't affect normal use? What are you smoking? A touch screen device with a defective screen doesn't effect normal use? So you're going to keep a bad crappy device for a couple of months because hell I don't know why. So everybody else should keep their as well.
These devices currently have a ton of QC issues. Fact. People will report and discuss them. The only trolls are the people that keep saying people reporting issues etc must be trolling.

Guess how many devices I have linked to my account? lol
Seven GNex phones and two N7s. I've returned 4 N7s but one of them had a broken touch screen so I couldn't actually set it up and on the other the screen lift was so bad that I didn't bother powering it up. Crazy stuff. I honestly don't know why I keep coming back to the Nexus brand after my recent experiences.
Here's an actual rational though.
Only a fool would fail to read and call someone out for something opposite of what they said.
CHILL OUT, COUNT TO 10 before you make yourself look like an idiot again. He never suggested you accept a flaw, he said that repeatedly doing the same thing and expecting a different result is not the best idea. Obviously you want the device, but instead of complaining about it here, which will do absolutely freaking nothing, why not take a breath and waiting a week? Rapid fire returns sure haven't worked for you yet.
Yawn....
Every device has growing pains the the N7 is no different... Google botched the pre-orders and they have a manufacturing issue to correct...
I will TRY and make this simple...
Let say Google had 10 million produced before they correct the manufacturing process / defect.. Now lets say they sold 5 million... That leaves 5 million defective units still on shelves / in stock...
You can continue to exchange it until the cows come home and guess what? Your replacement is going to come from the defective (read: in stock) pile until the defect is corrected and the originally shipped (read: defective) units have been depleted...
Save yourself the headache, stress, tantrums and wait a few months for the issue to be resolved and the fixed units to become the in stock norm...
If the unit has an issue that prevents it from functioning then that's another matter... Slight screen raise is not one of those... Keep on replacing it and keep getting the same (read: originally manufactured defect) unit in the mail... It's your headache not mine and I'm not the one throwing a tantrum in an online forum..
I will wait a few months and exchange mine once Google has resolved the issue and the in stock tablets are that of the fixed variety...

Same for me. I contemplated not returning it to Office Depot but I ran by there at lunch and swapped for this one which appears good so far.

You said you are fine with screen lift. Screen lift is a defect.
Pressing on a certain spot of the screen (about 1/3 of the way from the top) makes an audible click and I can kind of feel it under my thumb too. I've had the phone for less than a week and it seems to work fine otherwise. I'll bring it into the Sony store on Monday to see what they say.
What could it be? Does this happen to anyone else? Do you think it's worth getting fixed?

How did you find out about this problem? Did you read about it somewhere and decided to try pressing your screen as well?
I'm pretty sure you'd never have found out about it during normal usage. Or did you randomly think to yourself "hey, I should really press my new phone's screen unusually hard and see if it make any noises" ?

I posted a thread about it a couple of days ago but should have mentionned it here as well that my phone wouldn't turn on after sleeping with it. I was checking for damage and I noticed this and assumed it was related. Though looking back, I'm pretty sure it was an unrelated software malfunction (kernel panic?), mainly because the battery kept draining during that time. It was at 60% when it was seemingly bricked (wouldn't even react to being plugged into multiple chargers and computers). then 24 hours later it magically let itself get charged, but for some reason was completely discharged at 0%. Everything worked normally from then on.

I see how it looks like I'm pressing hard, but I'm actually not at all.
I stumbled upon this post posted a month ago http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55745968&postcount=71
I'm a little worried about screen rigidity. After reading the other post about pressing the screen and seeing a rainbow and then seeing a YouTube video about a popping sound when you press on the screen. Hope Sony didn't go cheap here. Everything else I like about the phone. I have yet to take delivery of mine

In my defence - it's quite a sexy phone
And waterproof for a reason

Thanks for the vid. Though in a similar spot, mine sounds clickier and high pitched, like a mouse click
I'd definitely send the phone for repair before the glass spontaneously cracks
As you know I had same problem as you re power button not working but my phone won't revive I've now sent it in for repair.
I tried you screen click thing and got no clicking
same problem here
I'm having the same problem. Could you please let me know if it's a manufacture problem or not. Thank you in advance. and hopefully it's not.

I think it is, it definitely shouldn't be doing that. But I've decided to leave it be. I've ordered some tempered glass screen protectors - should stiffen up the screen a bit among other benefits.
Thanks

I've ordered a nillkin tempered glass + back screen protector as well. I'm waiting for it to be delivered in two weeks at most.
Anyways thanks for your answer. This problem, do you know if it happens to all device or just some? I have already tried putting it in water and it worked out just fine. Thanks again.
Seems like they all do this sound
I purchased my Z3 yesterday and I also noticed this weird sound while I was putting the case on. So today I went back to the store to see if it was just mine.
I tested 4 different Z3 with the dude a the sony store and they all seem to be doing the same sound at the same spot. However i still got mine replaced for one that seemed a little better than the others.
So yeah it looks like it's normal...
Guess what? I found the same issue somehow couple of weeks back and thought it was weird. I wasnt trying to test anything specifically and just clicking on phone for something at that time and heard the noise. So I did some more checks and saw it happening on the top half of the screen only.
Mind does the same thing. I bought it yesterday and noticed it this morning...hopefully it isn't something that I need to return it for.

They all do it, z3 and z3 compact. I tested 4 different z3 and 2 z3 compact at the sony store when I went to get an exchange for mine.
I took one which seemed a little less worst, but still do it.
I'm probably gonna buy a tempered glass, it might help lessen the default.

That's really unfortunate...I wonder why no one has mentioned it on Reddit or in any online reviews? We can't be the only ones to have noticed it.

To be honest, if my case hadn't been so hard to put on, I may never have noticed.

I noticed it fairly quickly...and I haven't purchased a case yet.
Does having a case on make it better/worse?
