Nexus 7 defects - Nexus 7 General

I'm planning on getting the nexus 7 and I keep hearing of defects with the screen and the overall build quality of it.
What's the likelyhood ill get I defected one, what are your experiences?

Thanks, the app wasn't letting me search. From what it looks like I need to be lucky to get a perfect one.

I think you'd be very unlucky to find a defective one. When you consider the number of devices that have been shipped the number of complaints is nothing strange. Every device ever lunched has issues (just pick one at random and search how people complained when it was first released). Remember people do not take to the streets in protest if they're happy!!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app

It's early adopter syndrome. Just wait a few weeks if you're so inclined to dismiss the initial build quality.

Hopping on the first batch is a gift and a curse. Yours might be the lucky one that works with no issues or you might receive a faulty one from production.
Just try your luck or wait.

People are making up statistics about how unlikely it is, but the screen lift issue is pretty common.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1785583
It's a subtle issue as well, and for some only becomes noticeable after the device has been heated and used for a while. It took me six days of heavy use to notice that my display was lifting on the left side, so I think that many who voted in that poll were announcing the perfection of their units prematurely.
However, if you buy from the Play store it doesn't matter if you have the screen separation issue, because they'll send out a replacement and let you keep the tablet until you receive it. That's why I'm replacing my defective 16 from Sam's with an 8 from Google. They seem to be taking care of people with even the most minor detachment issues, and I think that starting this week the 8 is going to have a higher standard of quality control because it isn't backordered.
If you're going to buy a 16 from a store, make sure you trust their return policy.

I think most people who get a defective unit complain... while most that don't have no reason to post that they rec'd a great product. I myself have a flawless one as well. Plus 5 of my friends...
I'm about to be on my third and my patience is starting to run thin. May keep the next one regardless and RMA direct with Asus. Scary that I'm actually expecting it to be faulty and hope its broken enough for RMA.

No issues here.
99% of the noise is either people with WAY out of kilter expectations for a £160 tablet, or are simply Apple shills.
You also have to consider that on forums like this, you will only ever hear from people with problems. Nobody comes here to say things are running fine.
Every device has manufacturing issues for sure, but considering the high numbers of Nexus7 devices shipped, and the rock-bottom pricing, it's actually rather good. Although try telling gutter press reporters like The Register and Engadget this, they will stir up an old crap if it means website hits. Both sites have destroyed their credibility in recent years over desperate fanboy reporting.

Mine is 100% perfect. The couple of people that I know personally with N7's have no issues either. I'm starting to think there is a lot more fiction than fact in these forums.
No issues at all. Screen is flush. Ran a display test and no dead pixels. All is well

had the thing less than 24 hrs:
screen good no dead pixels or flicker or construction problems
headphone socket seems ok
speaker volume in the normal range
only quandary is which gel case to buy ...
You sure you have a flawless nexus 7? Please make a video and post it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1789450
Download the multitouch test app, put your tablet on the table and make the axis cross, like in the OP video.
Thank you very much, we really need your feedback to know if we should RMA it. Cheers!
Nope. Mine is flawless.
Another 100% perfect tablet here. This is my first tablet and I have to say that it is unbelievable, especially at this price point. I really think that both the hardware and software on this thing gives us a snapshot into the future of these devices.
I already want to integrate jellybean into some sort of home automation system. With Google Now the possibilities are very cool.
Everything is great except looking on the centre of the left long side the screen is like half a mm lifted but don't mind it and wouldn't have noticed it if I didn't know what to look for

Got to play with a brand new one for a week, flawless.. I've now seen 3 additional units, they look ok as well.
Don't know of anyone personally who has one with any issues yet. None of these people use forums.
Via my HTC Rezound
After a few hours fine so far, touch wood.
No dead/stuck pixels.
No sign of screen lift, though I gather this may not be immediately evident.
Don't notice any ghosting.
Thought headphone socket was broken till I realised you need to push a bit harder than I'm used to on other devices to get them to click in place.
Only small glitch was while undergoing a lot of switching between different wifi options (testing speeds on home wifi, mobile tether blue tooth tether etc) settings force closed and sound stopped working till after reboot.
Free content is junk like I expected.
After unlocking bootloader used another email seem to have a second offering of credit. Didn't have card registered so it says I'll get credit when I register a card. Will wait till I have used first credit and know more about any repercussions for this.

Why should someone seek out a defect they wouldn't ordinarily notice or care about? Yes, you can be a hypochondriac when it comes to electronics too. Realistically we all have "something wrong" with us at any given time, and the same thing can be said about your electronic device.
Each and every device (not just N7s) out there has some kind of "minor defect" (and by that I mean doesn't work precisely as the owner might expect). The point is, owner who aren't obsessed about having a "perfect" device don't run 20 different diagnostic apps to try to hunt down that "defect".
I'm not saying every person who complains about a defect is a hypochondriac, there are definitively a select few real issues out there just like their always have been and always will be with every electronic device. However, there are many many more people who will just never be pleased, like those who have had multiple RMAs.
I have had mine since the 17th, no problems yet.

3rd defective N7. Dead spots on screen.

This is my 3rd N7. I just got it about 8 hours ago from gamestop. I thought when I started my new replacement up I finally got a defective free device!!! Started playing major mayhem and boy did I figure out quick this replacement was the worst. It would read my finger placement but I would either have to hold it there or swipe. Oh and the keyboard was almost impossible to use. Even moving widgets and apps on home screen was a chore due to it out being able to hold on to my placement. I know I'm not the only one having this issue. You guys think an update would fix this or do I have another deffective device?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Not sure, but if it is defective again, I would return it and buy it somewhere else.
Can you try it out with headphones plugged in or while touching the headphone jack? This might be a grounding issue.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
I just returned. I usually hate GameStop but they are bring really cool about the n7. They are exchanging it without question. One time they didn't even turn it on lol! But I got my replacement today and so far so good. Hope nothing is wrong with it *knock on wood*
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Third time will be the charm with me, I think. I'll be hopefully getting my third one early next week while I still have time to compare to my first unit. if the third one has issues, then I'll be putting the N7 on the back burner until people are reporting that these common issues are resolved. It's just taking TOO much time and energy to mess with this whole thing.
Gamestop just replacing them right there on the spot?
I made a video of the issue I'm experiencing along with how it behaves when I have the headphones plugged in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dG3-vjFYh0Q&feature=youtube_gdata_player

No, you didn't stutter, but you also didn't make much sense. I'd say a person with the time and inclination has no reason not to try to get a defect-free device. There's every reason to believe that at some point the initial manufacturing issues will be worked out, and defect-free Nexus 7's will become available. That should happen sooner rather than later, and so long as Google is willing to keep sending replacements, there's no reason why someone shouldn't keep trying (do note that I, personally, do not have the time or inclination, so I'm stopping at 3).
So, when I say "why," I'm asking: what's your reasoning? Certainly you don't REALLY mean that "God or some other higher power" is actually trying to say something.
Yes GameStop just returned it no questions asked. The only problem was finding the tablets. Only one GameStop in my city had a replacement. This one is perfect EXCEPT the sound. Its cracky and pops. But the m going to hold onto this one because everything else is flawless. Including the lifted screen. I rarely use the internal speaker anyway. It works fine of I dont pump it up a lot. Anyway yes GameStop was badass for once. They didn't even turn it on lol. I could have gutted the CPU.

Kinda makes me wonder if Google, Asus, or retailers are just recycling some of the returns to someone else, hoping they will be fine with whatever defects the person returning couldn't live with. Anyone know if there are any rules at the retail level that prevent this from happening?

Screen lift long term effects

Ok, so my N7 has a TINY bit of screen lift on the bottom.
All my screws were tight out of the box.
My question is do you guys think this screen lift will eventually damage the tablet? I mean if my tablet is perfect other than the little bit of lift on the bottom, should I return the thing? Because it really doesn't bother me that much.
Its your call. My opinion on mine? Google will support this device well for early adopters and I can get it exchanged later if need be. For the moment it is fixed but if I have issue in the future I fully expect Google to support the hell out of their first tablet.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
The product has been in people's hands long enough to determine the long term effects caused by the screen lift/bezel drop. Some people will say the screen will eventually fall off while others will claim it will be okay.
FWIW though, I've had my Nexus 7 since the 17th of this month and had minor screen lift in the left center portion. It's stayed about the same, and by that I mean it rises to the same level and stays at the same place until I finally decide to push it down. It eventually rises back up, but never further than what it was when it first came out of the box.
I'm going to try the washer fix tomorrow, but I'm not going to return. I don't have the clicking/creaking sounds others are having so I'm not too worried about it. If you are very worried about it though, just request a replacement.

I did think of that. If this turns out to be a HUGE widespread problem and they start dying left and right, I would hope Google would make some sort of repair program for the thing or a replacement free of charge.

But dealing with Asus isn't the same when Google is pushing it. I've heard mixed Asus cs reviews at best but if Google says send it back and it will be fixed then Asus has no say in the matter. For a year you call Google first if you ordered from the play store anyway.

Nexus 7 build revision?

Many early build revisions of the nexus 7 seemed to have quality issues. I think it has been resolved. Can anyone recommend what build/date revision and later to purchase?
Just order one from play devices and you'll get the latest one....

I'm planning to purchase from staples. I have hundreds in staples gift cards to use. Any date/revision or later I should ensure I buy?
Wanted to bump this for information as well. Looking to purchase one for Christmas and purchase one for my grandpa who is having a slowly deteriorating processing condition.
Have the build issues been resolved?
I think they reduced the problems but never got rid of them. It's always hit or miss. I have an original model without problems, a friend has a c70 with squishy power button and another friend has c80 without problems. Don't worry, if there are problems just take it back to staples.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda app-developers app
The one that I got on 29 October from Staples got the screen lift issue after 2 days. It had the serial #C09K (September built). I returned it and then got another one from office depot and so far no issue with the build quality. This one had the serial #CA0K (October built).
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
I have the latest CA0K and I notice a slight difference between the left and right side. The right side is flush against the silver trim and the left is like 0.1mm raised, it is hard to see. I can feel the difference by running my finger over the trimming where it meets the display. I might exchange it later when there is newer revision again since I have until January to return
Have a CB0K, which I assume is a newer model...has screen lift. :/
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
I bought a C07K in August which has a minor screen lift. I just bought another one CB0K model. Screen is perfect, but back cover where screen lift located is loose when you push it you can hear a creaking noise. So I exchanged it for another one CA0K model. This one is so far so good, solid built.
I think I will wait for like a CC0K model or something. I'm not sure if mine is even classified as screen lift as it's less than a 1mm difference but the display is a little recessed on every other edge so I assume it's not normal for only the left side to be a little higher.
Bought my Nexus 7 32gb model from a local walmart with first part of the SSN is C90K. Don't even see any screen lift on the device least that I can see anyways. I had the device for 3 days now and have not found any issues with it yet.
You can try running your finger nail slowly to each edge, the silver trim has a very slight elevation that should barely stop your finger nail from sliding up and over it kind of like a galaxy nexus. It's a subtle detail on the nexus 7

Because I bought it imported from USA , I checked calling ASUS that it has 1 year International warranty. So mine is also C9OK ( O letter , not 0 zero , ASUS explained that to me through their systems ) and its perfect. It came with 4.1.1 version preinstalled
I'm going to get my 7 today

Not 0.1mm but 1mm. How am I complaining? I am just stating what I see. I had my nexus for 2 weeks and I don't want to end up with what could develop into something more serious thus I may exchange it. No, I do not want to fix it any future problems myself and void the warranty. You are complaining about me being detail oriented. There's hardware revisions for a reason. I'm not saying my nexus 7 has a definite flaw that's why I discuss about it for more input.
Soon I paid for my Nexus 7 I told the cashier. I told the cashier I was going to open up the package and look at the device here in the store. I told them about the known issues with some of the batches. Turned the device on I bought right in the store and checked the whole thing out.
After looking it all ever turned out my device it good and solid.

Ordered 2, sending both back

Just received my order of two 16GBs yesterday. The first one (for myself) has a black dot between the screen and the glass, right in the middle. I tried to live with it but its very distracting especially on a light background.
Today I unboxed the other one and it won't even turn on. Plugged it to the charger and the LED light kept flashing red.
I'm very disappointed with the QC of the N4. So much for fighting through orders and shipping

I don't think price comes into factor with defects. I paid the same price as the OP and my phone has no defects and has been running flawlessly. And I am pretty sure if we all paid double, we still would be seeing the posts with defects, lol.

Of course the price is connected with quality check, but man, let the truth enlighten you: the number of posts regarding defects would be way smaller; take HTC for example (or iPhone, I AM IN NO WAY AN APPLE FANBOY, I'VE NEVER HAD ANY APPLE THING )

Yeah I agree if they had charged us an extra $150 each I think they could have done at least something to improve the quality and reduce defects. Of course, knowing Google they probably would have just given us the middle finger, kept the extra cash, and sent out defective products anyways.
Sad. But that's now my impression of Google.

Of course quality control affects price. QC can be very labor intensive($$$), from just auditing the boards and components at various levels of production, to scrap (throwing away defective product $$$) or rework (labor intensive $$$) of product with defects. I speak from experience here. No doubt QC suffered in order to offer the Nexus 4 at this price. Of course, it probably didn't suffer as much as it might have from other manufactures, as Google does not have to make money on the device itself as they can rake in the money from the Play store.
I mean, I love that I am able to purchase such a high end device for $299/349, but I think we really have to worry about what this will do to the rest of the Android ecosystem. Amazon has already been putting the hurt on everybody (other than Apple) in the tablet market with their Fire tablets (again, they can make money from the Amazon app store, and other content), and now Google is putting the Squeeze on everybody else with the Nexus 4, the Nexus 7, and the Nexus 10.
Competition is good for everybody, but if only Apple, Amazon and Google can make money due to owning the content stores, then that's a bad omen for the industry IMHO. But I digress.
You know I see everyone blaming Google when Google didn't make the hardware. They only did the software. I saw this coming when then announced LG was the hardware OEM. They have never been known for outstanding hardware.

I've got an rma out for mine for a similar issue, there's a black squiggly line going across my camera lens...seems like it's probably stuck between my camera lens and the glass. Not a huge deal, but definitely an annoyance to have to send it back, especially after unlocking and rooting it.

I'm inclined to believe that offering these Nexus devices at such a low price has resulted in quality control going out the window, as well as warranty. The Nexus 4 seems to have a lot of issues and the Nexus 7 has had its fair share as well.
I had a Nexus 7 and the first one I got had a washed out screen and the well known screen lift on the left side so I exchanged it and my second one only had screen lift as well but to a much lesser degree so I kept it. A couple months go by and I go to pick it up off my table, placing my thumb on that left side and the screen cracked from one side to the other, leaving the top portion unresponsive to touch. I called up both ASUS and Google and neither would do anything about it.
That experience and what I'm seeing here about the Nexus 4 has resulted in me losing faith in Nexus devices, which sucks because I loved the Galaxy Nexus and was really looking forward to this year's Nexus phone.

Agree completely. My nexus 7 had screen lift issues but I didn't care enough to RMA. Maybe I should have, though, because it completely died while charging last week, and now I have no choice but to RMA.
