I think most people who get a defective unit complain... while most that don't have no reason to post that they rec'd a great product. I myself have a flawless one as well. Plus 5 of my friends...
I'm about to be on my third and my patience is starting to run thin. May keep the next one regardless and RMA direct with Asus. Scary that I'm actually expecting it to be faulty and hope its broken enough for RMA.

No issues here.
99% of the noise is either people with WAY out of kilter expectations for a £160 tablet, or are simply Apple shills.
You also have to consider that on forums like this, you will only ever hear from people with problems. Nobody comes here to say things are running fine.
Every device has manufacturing issues for sure, but considering the high numbers of Nexus7 devices shipped, and the rock-bottom pricing, it's actually rather good. Although try telling gutter press reporters like The Register and Engadget this, they will stir up an old crap if it means website hits. Both sites have destroyed their credibility in recent years over desperate fanboy reporting.

Mine is 100% perfect. The couple of people that I know personally with N7's have no issues either. I'm starting to think there is a lot more fiction than fact in these forums.
No issues at all. Screen is flush. Ran a display test and no dead pixels. All is well

had the thing less than 24 hrs:
screen good no dead pixels or flicker or construction problems
headphone socket seems ok
speaker volume in the normal range
only quandary is which gel case to buy ...
You sure you have a flawless nexus 7? Please make a video and post it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1789450
Download the multitouch test app, put your tablet on the table and make the axis cross, like in the OP video.
Thank you very much, we really need your feedback to know if we should RMA it. Cheers!
Nope. Mine is flawless.
Another 100% perfect tablet here. This is my first tablet and I have to say that it is unbelievable, especially at this price point. I really think that both the hardware and software on this thing gives us a snapshot into the future of these devices.
I already want to integrate jellybean into some sort of home automation system. With Google Now the possibilities are very cool.
Everything is great except looking on the centre of the left long side the screen is like half a mm lifted but don't mind it and wouldn't have noticed it if I didn't know what to look for

Don't know of anyone personally who has one with any issues yet. None of these people use forums.

After a few hours fine so far, touch wood.
No dead/stuck pixels.
No sign of screen lift, though I gather this may not be immediately evident.
Don't notice any ghosting.
Thought headphone socket was broken till I realised you need to push a bit harder than I'm used to on other devices to get them to click in place.
Only small glitch was while undergoing a lot of switching between different wifi options (testing speeds on home wifi, mobile tether blue tooth tether etc) settings force closed and sound stopped working till after reboot.
Free content is junk like I expected.
After unlocking bootloader used another email seem to have a second offering of credit. Didn't have card registered so it says I'll get credit when I register a card. Will wait till I have used first credit and know more about any repercussions for this.

Why should someone seek out a defect they wouldn't ordinarily notice or care about? Yes, you can be a hypochondriac when it comes to electronics too. Realistically we all have "something wrong" with us at any given time, and the same thing can be said about your electronic device.
Each and every device (not just N7s) out there has some kind of "minor defect" (and by that I mean doesn't work precisely as the owner might expect). The point is, owner who aren't obsessed about having a "perfect" device don't run 20 different diagnostic apps to try to hunt down that "defect".
I'm not saying every person who complains about a defect is a hypochondriac, there are definitively a select few real issues out there just like their always have been and always will be with every electronic device. However, there are many many more people who will just never be pleased, like those who have had multiple RMAs.
I have had mine since the 17th, no problems yet.

This is my 3rd N7. I just got it about 8 hours ago from gamestop. I thought when I started my new replacement up I finally got a defective free device!!! Started playing major mayhem and boy did I figure out quick this replacement was the worst. It would read my finger placement but I would either have to hold it there or swipe. Oh and the keyboard was almost impossible to use. Even moving widgets and apps on home screen was a chore due to it out being able to hold on to my placement. I know I'm not the only one having this issue. You guys think an update would fix this or do I have another deffective device?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Not sure, but if it is defective again, I would return it and buy it somewhere else.
Can you try it out with headphones plugged in or while touching the headphone jack? This might be a grounding issue.

Third time will be the charm with me, I think. I'll be hopefully getting my third one early next week while I still have time to compare to my first unit. if the third one has issues, then I'll be putting the N7 on the back burner until people are reporting that these common issues are resolved. It's just taking TOO much time and energy to mess with this whole thing.
Gamestop just replacing them right there on the spot?

No, you didn't stutter, but you also didn't make much sense. I'd say a person with the time and inclination has no reason not to try to get a defect-free device. There's every reason to believe that at some point the initial manufacturing issues will be worked out, and defect-free Nexus 7's will become available. That should happen sooner rather than later, and so long as Google is willing to keep sending replacements, there's no reason why someone shouldn't keep trying (do note that I, personally, do not have the time or inclination, so I'm stopping at 3).
So, when I say "why," I'm asking: what's your reasoning? Certainly you don't REALLY mean that "God or some other higher power" is actually trying to say something.
Yes GameStop just returned it no questions asked. The only problem was finding the tablets. Only one GameStop in my city had a replacement. This one is perfect EXCEPT the sound. Its cracky and pops. But the m going to hold onto this one because everything else is flawless. Including the lifted screen. I rarely use the internal speaker anyway. It works fine of I dont pump it up a lot. Anyway yes GameStop was badass for once. They didn't even turn it on lol. I could have gutted the CPU.

Kinda makes me wonder if Google, Asus, or retailers are just recycling some of the returns to someone else, hoping they will be fine with whatever defects the person returning couldn't live with. Anyone know if there are any rules at the retail level that prevent this from happening?

Guys, don't step out in the road, you have more chance of getting hit by a bus than you have of getting a bad N7!
The N7 works with all kinds of external storage but you need to root it first, there's good instructions on what to do on these forums when you need them.
/edit, just had a thought, those might not be very good odds in India
As someone who has received three units with screen lifting, I wouldn't caution you as strongly as you might expect me to.
That's the only really common defect, and in most cases it is not severe enough to affect usage. The last two I received have been minor cases of separation. The reason I won't accept this flaw is because of the possibility that it will worsen over time, but keep in mind that this is speculative.
My experience with the device has been overwhelmingly positive aside from this, and if the Nexus 7 is right for you then it may be worth purchasing even if you do get one with the kind of separation I've been dealing with. Although the warranty friendly fixes have been found to be temporary, if it bothers you that much then good old fashioned super glue will do the trick. Many who have gone through multiple returns have decided that they like the tablet enough to dispense with this RMA business and jimmy it down themselves.
Don't let anyone tell you that screen lifting is a rare thing, but it's not the end of the world. This is a great device even with the fault.
You can get your friend to check it for you and if its bad return it on the spot.

@Dr. Sheldon take a look at the android development sub-section in the Nexus 7 forum. There are several methods of rooting the device, most of them requires little interactions with the device.
Also, the ones who have had defects are among the thousands who haven't encountered any problems, so your odds should be pretty good. Best luck to you mate.

Don't be afraid, that's what Apple want to to feel. That's where this whole myth of Nexus7 problems originate from...
The vast majority of Nexus7's are fine. You only hear about the ones with problems.. (or claimed problems. I suspect only 10% of those are genuine, the other 90% Apple viral marketing at work).
People here are saying there's a small amount of defective n7s but I'm on my third one. First 2 had dead pixels, and my current one has screen lift. Guess I have extremely bad luck
I got mine overseas and notice screen flickering and screen tear the first day.
I also cannot return it.
But I pop it open (easy enough) and tighten the screw, it seems to fix the screen tear.
Only notice the tear once yesterday after a whole week. And people on forum already has solution for flickering.
So I cannot settle if it is hardware or software related.
I think for the price of half an iPad, it is lighter and smaller.
So I can definitely deal with the small imperfection.
So go ahead and get it.

Hi Dr. Sheldon
I have hours worth of videos on the Nexus 7. Showing OTG functionality(mouse/keyboard, remotes, usb hubs, controllers, camera connection and control), how to root, comparison, NFC in action, streaming your desktop screen, and more. My youtube channel is down below in the signature. But these are my perspective. There are allot of great videos others are publishing showing all the good and bad from different viewpoint. As a developer and hobby android developer, this is a great device. This is a great forum and community that will really unlock allot of potential in the Nexus 7, the most interesting sub-forum in my opinion is the Nexus 7 Developer.
For rooting Nexus 7, this is a very comprehensive video that was put together: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrZaU5i2x4w&hd=1
Best Regards

There is no such thing. There will always be a number of defective devices for various reasons when things are mass produced. The number of issues you are seeing in the forum is skewed as most people who have no issues, rarely use forums or post about their experiences.
I've now touched and used 5 brand new 16gb Nexus 7's out of the box and they were all fine. The first was in the first initial pre-launch batches with the latest being 3 days ago. I know that others have had issues but that is the experience that I've been seeing.

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
It probably more than covers your dad's needs. Unless you anticipate your father becoming a power user and desiring the latest and greatest games and OS releases the N1 should be fine. A ton of apps, calendar, contacts, email, texting, camera and browser are all there. I have a pair of N1's here that I kept for standbys in case one of our other phones has a problem but honestly I don't think my wife would notice the difference if she didn't have her Sensation 4G. I just asked her what would she miss if she had to go back to the N1 full time and the only thing she could think of is that the N1 is smaller. At $79 it's a nice entry point for someone who doesn't know whether or not they will like a "smartphone."
Thanks for the info. He honestly wouldn't know the difference. I have never owned a Nexus One and wasn't sure if it was too outdated to even consider. I was going to give him GS1 before it broke, but comparing online they have pretty identical specs and I know my GS1 is perfectly capable for him.

Yeah it's more than capable for an entry level user who probably won't ever need all the features. My father-in-law got a low-end android phone from AT&T earlier this year. 2 weeks later he was returning it.

Lol just made me think of having to press slightly above center on the "hard" keys to get response. It's not the only phone I've had that kind of issue with though. It didn't overshadow my time with the N1. Had it from launch and still have it. Not my daily phone anymore but it's decent enough for a backup that sits in the car or drawer.
So I got my phone yesterday evening at 7pm from the UPS driver and of course it was the latest I had ever received a package!
Anyways, all I have to say is that getting a phone from the "second wave" seems to have been a great thing because I have had ZERO issues at all so far. Right away I looked over the entire phone for any cosmetic defects that have been reported and nothing was found wrong. The screen IMO is amazing and colors look perfect as well. There is NO yellow tint whatsoever and I even had my GF look at it to make sure. Battery is already better than my former Blaze 4G and that's saying something. This phone is definitely a fresh start from the touchwiz ui and made me realize that was really kiddish looking like IOS IMO. The camera takes pictures just fine although I am still trying to figure out all the features on it. The phone got pretty warm on initial start up when all of my apps were being installed from the Play store but after that, normal browsing and such did not make it any warmer than anything i have felt before in other phones. Finally, there is NO buzzing in my earpiece at all, and yes my hearing is good, this again I had my GF check too so I knew I was not crazy.
So honestly, I think that maybe the second wave was produced better or something I really don't know, but I encourage anyone to get this phone if they have been debating because of other peoples "issues". Thanks
That's great to hear. I also ordered a N4 from the second batch and I can't wait for it to be here. Nice review

Grats on getting your phone; you're gonna love it.
I got mine a week after the initial ordering and my phone is perfect, so I don't know about any second waves or anything like that. There are always going to be phones with manufacturing-related defects; that's why they do exchanges. Don't get hung up on a few people who think their phones are s**t.

I got my 2 Nexus 4's yesterday. The one seems fine, but I have an issue with the 2nd one. During calls, the earpiece buzzes while making sounds. The earpiece does not make any sounds when it is off like a lot of people seem to report. This is strictly a problem during calls and it sounds like the speaker is blown. It does rattle a bit when I'm putting it on a table or whatnot, but that doesn't really bother me.
Called support yesterday, and they were supposed to send me an e-mail with instructions on sending this one back and getting a replacement, but haven't actually received anything from them.
I seem to have some kind of knack for getting bad phones from Google. I had ordered 2 Galaxy Nexus phones when they came out, and ended up getting a replacement for one of the phones because there was dust in the camera. The replacement had the wifi go out, so I had to get that one replaced. The third one actually had a similar buzzing issue with the earpiece but it wasn't as bad, and I was tired of dealing with them at that point, so I lived with it.

I get what you are saying, but he is still literally correct.
I'm sure he could care less, otherwise he wouldn't have an N4. If he cared less:
- he could have not bought the phone
- he could leave it at a bus stop and go on living
- etc. etc.
Now, I'm sure he could care a hell of a lot MORE about it, taking to the internet in fits of rage, driving to Mountain View and knocking on the front door and such. But still, he could also care less.
Just saying.
Received mine yesterday and it has zero flaw. I don't take the mini rattle as one as it comes from the camera (autofocus?) and all the phones I tested since learning that on this forum have it.
For those of you wondering if the bumper is worth 20 euros, it's definitely well made, perfectly fits the look of the phone and prevents the back from direct contact but... well, the phone has a perfect size for my hand and the bumper adds about 0.5 - 0.7 cm in width which makes it awkward to hold. I find myself removing it often when using my phone.
My 2 cents.

Today I unboxed the other one and it won't even turn on. Plugged it to the charger and the LED light kept flashing red.
I'm very disappointed with the QC of the N4. So much for fighting through orders and shipping

I wish they had just given it a normal price and used the extra money to fix the thermal issues, screen issues, battery, etc. I haven't found any problems with mine yet but given the launch failure and all the issues, this may be my last nexus.

If they had a higher price I wouldn't of had to upgrade!
Dang it Google!
I will probably do an RMA since the phone is awesome...when it works.
Where can I find the number to call Google?

I don't think price comes into factor with defects. I paid the same price as the OP and my phone has no defects and has been running flawlessly. And I am pretty sure if we all paid double, we still would be seeing the posts with defects, lol.

Of course the price is connected with quality check, but man, let the truth enlighten you: the number of posts regarding defects would be way smaller; take HTC for example (or iPhone, I AM IN NO WAY AN APPLE FANBOY, I'VE NEVER HAD ANY APPLE THING )

Yeah I agree if they had charged us an extra $150 each I think they could have done at least something to improve the quality and reduce defects. Of course, knowing Google they probably would have just given us the middle finger, kept the extra cash, and sent out defective products anyways.
Sad. But that's now my impression of Google.

Not sure why you think that, but OK.

Of course quality control affects price. QC can be very labor intensive($$$), from just auditing the boards and components at various levels of production, to scrap (throwing away defective product $$$) or rework (labor intensive $$$) of product with defects. I speak from experience here. No doubt QC suffered in order to offer the Nexus 4 at this price. Of course, it probably didn't suffer as much as it might have from other manufactures, as Google does not have to make money on the device itself as they can rake in the money from the Play store.
I mean, I love that I am able to purchase such a high end device for $299/349, but I think we really have to worry about what this will do to the rest of the Android ecosystem. Amazon has already been putting the hurt on everybody (other than Apple) in the tablet market with their Fire tablets (again, they can make money from the Amazon app store, and other content), and now Google is putting the Squeeze on everybody else with the Nexus 4, the Nexus 7, and the Nexus 10.
Competition is good for everybody, but if only Apple, Amazon and Google can make money due to owning the content stores, then that's a bad omen for the industry IMHO. But I digress.
You know I see everyone blaming Google when Google didn't make the hardware. They only did the software. I saw this coming when then announced LG was the hardware OEM. They have never been known for outstanding hardware.

Google was the supervisor of the whole project. Google selected LG. If you think the phone is perfect, Google deserves most of the credit. If you think it sucks, Google deserves much of the blame.

Today I unboxed the other one and it won't even turn on. Plugged it to the charger and the LED light kept flashing red.

Have you tried charging it on a pc?
Plug it into USB port of computer and leave for half hour.
This happens on a few android devices when fully discharged and pc charging is the only way to do it sometimes.

I've got an rma out for mine for a similar issue, there's a black squiggly line going across my camera lens...seems like it's probably stuck between my camera lens and the glass. Not a huge deal, but definitely an annoyance to have to send it back, especially after unlocking and rooting it.

I'm inclined to believe that offering these Nexus devices at such a low price has resulted in quality control going out the window, as well as warranty. The Nexus 4 seems to have a lot of issues and the Nexus 7 has had its fair share as well.
I had a Nexus 7 and the first one I got had a washed out screen and the well known screen lift on the left side so I exchanged it and my second one only had screen lift as well but to a much lesser degree so I kept it. A couple months go by and I go to pick it up off my table, placing my thumb on that left side and the screen cracked from one side to the other, leaving the top portion unresponsive to touch. I called up both ASUS and Google and neither would do anything about it.
That experience and what I'm seeing here about the Nexus 4 has resulted in me losing faith in Nexus devices, which sucks because I loved the Galaxy Nexus and was really looking forward to this year's Nexus phone.

Agree completely. My nexus 7 had screen lift issues but I didn't care enough to RMA. Maybe I should have, though, because it completely died while charging last week, and now I have no choice but to RMA.
